    One question about the various colors on the stain jars, do they refer to the final color the stain will create, or refer to the original color of the wood (this you need to match)? Thanks!!!!

    • @SalvagedInspirations
      @SalvagedInspirations  2 года назад +1

      The color shown on the cans is the end result... the color the wood will look like after you use the stain. :)

    Hi good day, I made a mistake satining my table with gel stain and didn’t realize it till it was dry that I had to wipe it off with a towel after applying the gel. What should I do?! Do I have to strip all of the satin away?

    • @SalvagedInspirations
      @SalvagedInspirations  4 года назад +1

      Some people do apply gel stain and don't wipe back. This gives a more opaque finish rather than more of the wood grain showing through and can look really beautiful. If it's dry and you're happy with the look, I'd leave it. :)

    Is it okay to use a water-based pre-stain before applying my gel stain? Can across a video after I already applied it. Also, is there a time limit to apply your stain after you pre-stain? No one mentions it but I read it somewhere??

    • @SalvagedInspirations
      @SalvagedInspirations  2 года назад

      Hi Nancy! Your wood conditioner should match the type of stain you are using. And yes, there is a time limit but each product may be a little different so I always make sure I read the instructions before applying. Hope this helps.

      @@SalvagedInspirations Hi there, Thank you very much for your reply. I read all over the pre-stain wood conditioner can and it says nothing about making sure it matches the base-type of the stain nor a time limit to apply stain after using it. It's weird how no one specifies something that seems pretty important. Anyway, I very much appreciate your reply but I've actually given up and will resand everything and just paint:(

    What should I do? I removed stain gel with cloth this morning …

    • @SalvagedInspirations
      @SalvagedInspirations  3 года назад

      It's best to wipe it off right away otherwise if you put it on and let it sit, it will get very tacky and then it's challenging to wipe off evenly. If it's oil-based, you can apply more stain (which will 'soften the first application) and then wipe it off right away. Hope this helps.

    Hello. Can you tell me, can I use tung oil on top after applying gel stain?

    • @SalvagedInspirations
      @SalvagedInspirations  4 года назад

      Hmmm...I'm not 100% sure because I've read yes and no and my experience with Tung Oil is limited. I think it depends on what type of gel stain (waterbased vs oil) and what type of Tung Oil. I have the Minwax version but it's not 'real' tung oil. If anyone reading this know, please feel free to chime in. I'm curious about this myself. Thx

    Hi :) Hope you are well and alive! I bought an IKEA oak tree effect laminate butcher block island which I will use to make a custom office desk. Oak color is too light for my taste and I don't want to return the top I carried this 70in by 42in monster by myself. I met with a lot of people saying I can't make it darker without painting it period. I refuse to believe that. I thought on applying tinted vinyl like they use for car windows, I tried to dive in the wax, oils or whatever could do the trick and everything seems to lead me towards polyurethane with a darker pigment after sanding a bit of the laminate. I know it won't necessarily absorb into the material as much as wood and probably its going to just be an added layer over the top but as long as I can get it darker without hiding the nice textural features I would be happy. I can't see any videos of people doing that haha, but something tells me it can be done! I would like to have your advice on this if you can :) I have dark brown black alex drawers underneath the table, so a darker tone from oak effect is what I am looking for, as long as its transparent so I can see the effect, just not the same tint, much darker. Thanks :)
