I am going to try lvl5 hunter( dual wield )+ lvl3 thief ( bonus action gives extra attack each round ) and lvl3 champion( action surge is nice, 2nd fighting style and improved critical are good ). Lvl 12 can go to fighter for a feat... but the game is over by then.
I found that if you do a good amount of the side activities that you will hit 12 quite a bit before the end, but if you skip even a moderate amount then you are correct. I skipped almost all the under dark in act 1, did most of act 2 and I hit 12 in Baldurs Gate I would say 3/4 of the main content through.,
no matter what character you want to make, you should always level 1-5 as a Paladin, it is the best class because you get an armor class of 20 from level 1 and it only goes up from there when you add fighting styles and better armor. You also start off with 10 hp which is only matched by fighter ranger and barbarian, but of those 3 only Fighter can match the Paladins armor class. At level 5, respec out of Paladin and into your preferred class. The reason you do this is because the first couple levels are the harshest levels, starting off as a Paladin is the most optimal choice until your preferred class can hold their own, for example, sorcerer and wizard who have only d6 get destroyed at early levels because they have no reliable damage, no useful spells, and no hp or armor to protect them. So you only want to spec them at level 5 when they can cast Fireball and have more hp from natural leveling process. i'd say after level 5 theres no need to worry about a leveling guide because every class in the game is viable post 5th level and failing encounters is virtually impossible at that point.
I play for fun, not to be the best, you're only competing with yourself and if you can't excel on any build (minus off builds like wild magic barb/arcane trickster rogue) then yeah you should probably play "the best" choice ahaha
there is no "wrong" way to play a single player game. Play what is fun for you. Sometimes thats picking the best class, sometimes its to make things hard on yourself by picking a challenging setup. @@Beardofwisdom

Good idea about starting paladin. Barb is also great 1-5
