Another variation would be to go hunter 11, war cleric 1 for three extra attacks per long rest. The tradeoff is you lose a feat.

On my first playthrough, I recruited a certain someone in Act 3 whose default class is Ranger, and after he hardcarried a bunch of fights with Volley I knew I’d want to fully try Ranger for myself.

I love volley hit effect lol :) I should try it! I actually had a bad impression on the hunter class but spamming volley seems fun

Another interesting thing you can do with this build or rather a few, minor spoilers. If you take the "awakened" passive from the zaith'isk in the creche, allowing you to use black hole as a bonus action. Suck everything in with a bonus action spam volley as a main attack, i use this a lot for wizards/sorcs black hole will also cast "slow" on those effected if they fail the save. This combo on honor mode makes most boss fights like Raphael a joke so long as your not doing some sort of radiant damage with your bow this + a few monk CCs+ a djinni CC Raphael never got a turn killed his whole hoard and he never got to heal or transform on honor mode. That necklace can also be a great combo if used with the booal's chosen buff from act one giving advantage on bleeding targets, with a crit build pull them all in cause them to bleed crit banaza. The whole thing kinda causes you to be evil, Booal's chosen specifically.

the skill lightning arrow is useful if you have the blast pendant and high enough lightning charges. Its base damage is also not that bad

Conjure barrage is notoriously bad since it deals poor damage and is an action.
Hail of thorns and lightning arrow are meant to work with your extra attack, volley, and horde breaker.
Weird they don’t work in bg3

ranger hunter also best dps class, and easy to build, because both attack and defense rolls based on dexterity, plus a bit of wisdom to have will-save rolls

I'm doing a melee ranger hunter right now. Whirlwind attack is really good when I go with GWM and Balduran Giantslayer. the downside would be the low hit rate(around 35% at act 3) but equipping risky ring(auto advantage) and the Mask of Soul Perception(+2 atk roll) as well as buying the statue(permanent bless for the said character) and I managed to raise it above 75%.

I feel archer fits hunter better due to volleys AOE, but nice to see you make a melee one work! Melee perhaps fits beast master better with the pets attacks granting advantage.

@@Crozyn honestly this is referenced from the berserker bleed build I saw online. The only thing making this one better is the aoe aspect as well as the Conjure Barrage spell. Seriously you're missing out on the Conjure Barrage spell. It is actually a really great spell as it used melee/range damage + 2d8 extra damage in a large cone shape out front which is honestly really good

If it counted as a weapon attack it would be much better imo. Not utilizing the extra attack from a ranger is too much of an impact to use it consistently for me.

@@CrozynHis build sounds interesting. I have enjoyed a ranged ranger but a melee one could be fun. Also who cares about a second weapon attack going to waste if the first skill hits several mobs at once and or takes them out of the fight.

Yeah a melee ranger is amazing, but beast master fits that role better than hunter imo. My beast master ranger build uses conjure barrage since aoe attacks are limited on that subclass.

That's pretty much the way it is. They do get colossus slayer/horde breaker at lvl 3 which is decent, and the extra attack at lvl 5. The other martial classes are just going to do more damage before lvl 11 though. You're rewarded with volley at lvl 11 for sticking it out lol.
