A note about RTSS (MSI Afterburner OSD): Set app detection level to none for specific program executables if they won't launch while you have it active. You won't have to toggle it on and off at a system level that way.
A few months ago NordVPN was having trouble for me and support concluded it was RTSS. So this comment is definitely helpful. You don't need to monitor sensors with NordVPN :)
If you like to fall asleep watching shows but you don’t want your pc running all night, I’d recommend wise auto shutdown. Basically works like a tv sleep timer but you can choose to shutdown, hibernate, or sleep at a specific time. Also can make it schedule daily set time.
or you can just tell your video player to put system into sleep mode once video ends work just like torrent progarms that allow shutdown system once download finish
Also if you have messed up with the sliders you can skip going to safe-mode just to uninstall/remove the current unstable clock That's how - You may press and hold key to immediately after logging in to Windows to bypass applying the settings (applies to voltage, clock and fan control settings). You can also find detailed version of that by hovering over the windows button in the msi afterburner program if you have hints enabled ofc. peace
Here's a fun little tip. If you do manage to put core +1000 on MSI afterburner and have auto load on boot, u can hold CTRL after login to block the settings from being applied!
I like TreeSize Free. If your SSD or HD is getting full, it gives you a great overview of everything you have stored and it's easy to find stuff you don't need and you can clear up some space.
A software I like to use is a tool named Ghostbuster, which searches the PC for ghosted device driver entries and can removed them. This helped me a lot with seemingly messed up drivers, which especially game controllers and audio devices suffered a lot.
This is probably not necessary if you have Windows 10. I haven't been able to find ghost drivers for a long time now because win10 keeps them out of the way.
I have used this with Windows 10 for years. And no, it doesn’t keep them out of the way. I cannot say, why it doesn’t find anything for you, but windows 10 definitely doesn’t remove them or anything.
i keep having buzz freezes... usually with gaming... some games work fine but some games windows 10 just freezes completely ... keyboard and mouse video and the audio sends a loud buzzing sound... its always in different tones ... sometimes changes tone during the freeze... until i power off by holding the main i/o .... would ghostbuster help this?
For windows, AutoHotKey script is incredibly useful for all sorts of macros and custom scripts. One of the many things I use it for is automating repetitive keyboard tasks, as well as a custom set of keyboard layers for more ergonomic typing.
Holy crap just used MSI afterburner for the first time and i didnt realize how slow i was running my fans. Ive been under using my PC because i couldnt really monitor anything. But now i can push my PC while playing some of my favorite games and see how it preforms while im playing!

Hey Jay I just wanted to say that I've watched you ever since the beginning of Skunkworks and loved your channel ever since. You've been a huge inspiration for me and even got me to build my own pc. You seem to have a lot of fun doing what you do on RUclips and I wish I could do what you do. Thanks for being one of my favorite RUclipsrs ever.
Unchecky is great, it unchecks "install this optional software" from installer dialogues. Suddenly I didn't have 5 different pieces of security software to constantly uninstall on my parents PC
There's a lot of people on RUclips who talk about PC building/monitoring etc and everything else related, but I have to say I find Jay to be the best to learn from. He explains things better, he doesn't come across as pompous or condescending like some others I've watched in the past. Great video as always, I've heard about all but the TechPowerUp GPU-Z and was surprised at how in detail this program was. Will be using this for future builds and recommending to friends who are new to building. Thanks Jay
Here I am building a PC when everyone starts yelling "Everyone, build your PC now!" Now my CPU order is canceled by seller because they noticed prices for CPUs were up due to high demand... Feels bad when you've got all your parts and now you're stuck with waiting for prices to come back down or paying an extra 50% or more for your last component. Considering wasting half my weekend driving to Micro Center to pick it up in store for a 'Normal' price (+tax). Should probably send an angry e-mail to the seller that screwed me over too, since I could have ordered elsewhere for the same price if I knew they were going to cancel my order.
@@CoreyKearney This was with a reputable site and it wasn't like I picked some sketchy marketplace listing (it was the default seller and might have even been 1st party). Ebay though, yeah. Not usually worth the hassle unless it's something you literally can't purchase elsewhere. That's where you'll get an email saying that, actually the _new_ modular PSU doesn't actually come with any of the modular cables. It's not actually the pictured product. You still want it right?
If you are using ebay and you actually bought the cpu you can go through legal terms and push the seller to actually ship your item and accept the purchase contract (at least in germany)
Remember, if you disable automatic Windows updates, do the process yourself once a week, especially nowadays tons of security updates get released every month, some extremely time critical, not to mention updates may improve performance and add new utilities. Windows Explorer dark mode is perfect for example.
Once a week is not often enough for security updates. Those need to be installed asap since there could be a remote code execution for example. If too many people disable updates Microsoft is going to take that option away again.
I've disabled it. Nothing worse that about to get a multi kill in your game and your desktop pops up and says "Hey F**ckTard, you should maybe do an update!"
"not to mention updates may improve performance and add new utilities" Do not forget to mention it may also add : Vanish all your files, brick all your files, delete all your files and so many more shitty update that caused so much trouble *October Update* That is the main reason i have Windows Update disable. I do not want to get a forced shitty update and get my pc brick or other crap because they have done a stupid coding then they have to roll out a fix for that...
@@AugustoKnight Exactly, notification suppression is the best solution along with than scheduling updates for a specific time. Telling people to disable Windows updates is really a bad idea; especially for the average user.
There are two programs in particular that I add to any system that I start with. The first is VLC Player, one of the best video players around, compatible with just about anything. The second is Belarc Advisor, a simple utility that records your system's hardware and installed software, including most security keys; it's an easy way to keep track of all your computer's assets in case of future issues, as the utility creates a simple HTML file to be saved or printed.
Yes when I did personal PC repair and tuning around 2005-2015, I'd use Belarc and print a hardcopy for clients. They really appreciated the security keys since they often would lose their original CD sleeves.
VLC is by far the most universal media player, but like optical drives, playing local media files is becoming an antiquated notion for most users who don't specialize in something like video editing.
A lot of these are like benchmarking and overclocking tools, which are good but a couple in particular that I like and are a little more practical when actually using your PC are VLC Video Player and Gyazo.
@@voidinheritant It's what File Explorer should be/do. You run it against whatever drives you want it to analyze and it'll show you, in a tree format, how full your drives are, which paths are the largest, etc. It can do many things, but it's the best way to figure out what's eating up so much space on all your storage (external drives too!)
I've been using windirstat for years, but it looks very outdated. I recently found about TreeSize Free which basically does the same thing, but has better UI.
@@LaurentiuAndreiBoeru You might like space sniffer or space monger V1.4 (free), its similar but visual, easier to see at a glance what is taking up the space. We use it in MSP's all the time

@@LezzaD Well, gaming is not windows only, and PC hardware is not just to run windows, but at least two other major OS, so it might be time to not just focus on win (first wanted to say: specifically on a crappy os. But i dont want to hurt some people feelings. ;) ).
@@Boborjan1986 If you look at the numbers, no other os is better for games. Even on Mac you will have more fps under Windows, like it or not, just facts.
Another good one is everything. You can search for any file on your system, and it displays the path to all files that contain the query you searched for. Pretty cool because the windows search bar is pretty useless for searching files imo. Also VLC Player is the best video player hands down.
In windows you have to turn on the option to search everything, by default it is set to search your most used and common folders. You can also add folders to search but it's set that way because it wants to save CPU and load faster results, I ran into the setting last night on my new build.
Disable all updates on Windows? I agree this is good if you are also aware that you will need to sit down at some points in time to actually do the updates... You've just told everyone watching the video to disable Windows update with no mention that they'll still need to update at some point.
This so much! - I actually initially skipped the video after Jay showing the world how to disable windows update. I’m pretty sure a good portion of your viewers know what they’re doing. My favorites as a photographer as well as a gamer are: CPU-Z, GPU-Z FastStone image viewer, GIMP, Rufus for making bootable USBs (Linux Windows etc.) and VLC for all media playback.
@@cazandmal GIMP is awesome for image editing, Davinci Resolve for video editing, the free version still has more than most need and not much really is missing compared to the studio version.

Also if you have messed up with the sliders you can skip going to safe-mode just to uninstall/remove the current unstable clock
That's how - You may press and hold key to immediately after logging in to Windows to bypass applying the settings (applies to voltage, clock and fan control settings).

A software I like to use is a tool named Ghostbuster, which searches the PC for ghosted device driver entries and can removed them. This helped me a lot with seemingly messed up drivers, which especially game controllers and audio devices suffered a lot.
Oooh, thanks. I'll have to look more into this.

For windows, AutoHotKey script is incredibly useful for all sorts of macros and custom scripts. One of the many things I use it for is automating repetitive keyboard tasks, as well as a custom set of keyboard layers for more ergonomic typing.

@ArtumTsumia That's a dick move by the seller.
Or you just but from a reputable retailer that doesn't do shit like that. I avoid marketplace sellers like the plague, and ebay is for desperation.
@@ArtumTsumia not as reputable as you thought then huh?

I haven't used CC in 20 years because back then I tried it & cleaned so well my PC wouldn't boot into Windows(!)
omg, they started to actually record the video output from the computer instead of filming the screen. Thanks guys
This is just because they're not benchmarking hardware, screen recording can mess with results
@@jeeBisOkay can always use a capture card on another pc. Elgato Cam Link works fine
"Search everything" will find you any file within seconds wherever it is on your hd. A real must have!
I purposely went through comments seeing if anyone mentioned this. It is so fast, and has been around for a long long time.
Been using that since 2013
Send the link to this program to the guys over at Microsoft. I don't think they know how to make a search tool that actually works. Well...unless it' searching the web.
@@only1sn1not1taken eh you can search everything in file manager, it just takes a long time. search everything just keeps a file index of all your files and locations. probably takes awhile to set up.
@@Demonslayer20111 No, file manager legit just can not find things sometimes. It's been this way for me across multiple installs of windows 10 and different hardware. When a program says it's already installed, windows can't find it, but you can manually go to the default install location and find it....well, at least I won't have to reinstall it but the whole reason I was trying to install it was because windows though I didn't have it. It's bad.
I'm building a new rig and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Look at the Sysinternals tools for a whole range of useful utilities. One that I can specifically recommend is Process Explorer
LOVE the sysinternals suite. A must for a person in IT. Also WinDirStat or similar file size explorer tool.
I cant Live without ADBlocker! :-)
@@redf113 Because...?
Turrebo you can customize it more but Adblock is pretty good too
@@woeiurieoweoriw6165 Thanks, I'll give it a try.
@@mvl71 Adblock and Adblock Plus allow ”acceptable” ads to show. Meaning who ever pays them $$ wont have their ads blocked. I also recomend DuckDuckGos Privacy Essentials, it blocks trackers.
Just use Brave browser... blocking ads is backed into it
Besides these OC-related apps the first things I install after Vanilla Windows are Terracopy, a copytool like once total commander , sumatrapdf (superfastpdf-reader) and notepad++,
i also used teracopy and ultracopier
NPP++ is standard to install
I prefer FastCopy
O.k. guys are any of these really any faster compared to Windows copy function?
@@DivergentDroid it depends
@@DivergentDroid Its not only about speed but functionalitys, just try it, you wont ever use the standart again.
SPEEDFAN!!!! I LOVED THAT PROGRAM, but after 4 cores it was useless. I wrote the Italian programmer who made it but he either died or found another interest like a high paying job with long hours or some supermodel which REALLY took longer hours...
