One thing I disagree with Max was Guilty Gear being omitted for being “too niche” especially considering Blazblue, Skullgirls, and Project Justice made the list
Blazblue got big during ps3 era a lot of people would get it skull girls character design and animations is pretty amazing and it sells well on steam project justice sold well on Dreamcast and it’s the best out the series
Blazblue was on the same level of popularity as Guilty Gear was at the time. It wasnt until DBZ Fighters that put Arcsys on the map then Strive got attention
GG is "just another" anime fighter so it probably clashed with BlazBlue and FighterZ and probably lost out barely to BB. Project Justice fills one of the old nostalgia hidden gems people like to put in their list and Skullgirls is just so different in its artstyle which makes it unique. From a casual perspective.
I think the challenge with this list is that they do "one per franchise", and if we're talking about the greatest of all time, regardless of franchise, there's bound to be more than one street fighter in there.
Yeah the thing about sf is it many version and just saying 2 or 3 or 4 would be hard to say. So looking at it by the whole franchise and have one was best to keep it narrow
@@adriandenton6637 Not really. You can criticize SFV without hating it. I personally think 2, 3, and 4 were way more revolutionary than 5 is. 2 for obvious reasons + 3 and 4 for their beautiful graphics and tight gameplay mechanics. 5 now has these, but it took constant updates to improve those aspects (while the other games had those qualities from the start.)
It still blows my mind to this day that a game exists where you can have Kazuya Mishima, Donkey Kong, Sora, and Solid Snake face off in a Pokémon Stadium. And you don't need to mod anything to do it. Wild.
How is Smash a fighting game? It’s a party brawler if a fitting description. Fighting games aren’t just a game where you fight-like war of monsters isn’t a true fighting game...
@@BattleBrotherCastenhow ISNT smash a fighting game? Stop excluding games that quite literally fit the description of a genre and just specify a sub genre of fighting game. Just because it’s different doesn’t make it any less of a fighting game. Denying it is just cringe. You realize that games like Cod, halo, Valorant, and overwatch are all undeniably in the FPS genre despite the fact that they’re more different from one another than Smash is to traditional fighting games? Reality check
As a casual player, I really appreciate how often I feel seen and valued by Max, such a hardcore FGC member, rather than being looked down on or told I can't have opinions. He's always so intelligent and fun to listen to as well, I can't get enough of his analysis and discussions.
@@VaSoapman Doesn't excuse making a video that's just shitting on someone else's opinion. Unless that's the only reason this channel exists: to try to ladder onto the success of another.
@@catisreckless4647 What? He said it was a valuable list and liked it. He said it was an important video for the fighting game community. How did he shit on the list?
Wasn’t it a screaming simulator? I tried to watch gameplay but all the top videos are people reacting to new characters despite searching for “gameplay” videos.
Truth be told, EVO's attendance numbers and Twitch viewership are definitely going to be down significantly after the loss of Smash this year. It's very much what draws the biggest crowd. I'm shocked and kind of offended that Blazblue took Guilty Gear's spot on the list, though.
@@TFGRhinehart Blazblue series as a whole outsold Guilty Gear especially here in Asia where it had been the top anime fighter until Strive, it's the least niche of all anime fighters outside of DBFZ. It's the one anime fighter that actually got even more complex each game instead of getting simplified like each new Guilty Gear release.
This was such a feel-good video. It's incredibly rare to find hardcore/veterans react to casual content with such understanding of such a different perspective. It feels welcoming.
I don't think you saw the same video. The entire video is him basically saying why the list maker is wrong according to "The People Who Matter", ie. the FGC diehards.
@@catisreckless4647 you don't have to think I saw the same video, that's fine. you are entitled to your own thoughts and perspectives. I have a different perspective than you.

Max’s explanation and understanding for all of these games’ positioning is incredibly sound, and I’m 90% positive that he has given more care and reasoning for it all than the person(s?) who actually made this list. Bless his soul.
@@thisisanickname231 "Max's explanation and understanding is incredibly sound" and "I'm 90% positive that he (Max) has given more care and reasoning for it than all the persons who actually made this list". Oh, and you need to learn basic language, because you clearly don't understand how one "backs up" a statement.
Constantini really has gotta be one of the best editors I've seen on YT. Not just editing skills alone, but just how well it meshes so well with how Max is as a person, his comedic bits specifically. It meshes all so well that it just enhances the quality of the video overall imo.
Injustice 2 is one of the few fighting games along with smash that I can get my casual friends to play purely due to the fact that they like the DC Universe So yeah Max's point about casual people needing something tangible to get attached to or interested in is definitely true
I love the story in the game. I know many people don’t play it for the story but for games like Injustice and Mortal Kombat, it matters. However for Injustice 2 (not 1) I hate the competitive side of the game. It’s like Brawl for me. Not competitively great but can be very fun.
But of course. Casuals don't play for challenge fighting against the monsters who know the combos by heart. They play to see Terminator beating Sub Zero for example.
The best way to draw in players for fighting games is to give them characters they already have an attachment to. This history with the character may encourage the player to try to learn and master the character (as they are meant to). I saw a survey for why people don't like fighting games and the majority of people said that they are simply too much effort to learn. I'm sure the prospect of mastering their favorite character keeps people playing.
Yep, it's what got me into fighting games to begin with. The first fighting game I ever played was Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters because I was such a huge fan of TMNT. Eventually I dove into MK, Street Fighter, Tekken, etc. But idk if I would've done it had I not gotten sucked into the fighting game genre by my fandom of TMNT. This is why I appreciate when there's guest characters. A buddy of mine first got into fighting games when Link got put into Soul Calibur. A coworker of mine is a huge horror movie fan and he began playing MK when they added Freddy to the MK9. He's been an MK fan ever since because they keep adding horror movie characters. As you said, it's something that piques one's interest.
I do get Max's approach of observing/taking notes of casuals' interests in fighting games, but I feel like Watchmojo is maybe not the best example to draw from. Especially a channel that's notoriously dunked on by most people.
Yeah, it feels like the list was taken from another list on Reddit, randomised and then they added a few additional picks perhaps because they liked the game or because it'll get more engagement. This is far from hard data from casuals (which largely correlates with sales not necessarily with merit of the game).
You're right but only if you know about WatchMojo. If you don't know much about WatchMojo, are just looking to maybe get into FG and RUclips top 20 FG you'll get that video. Like the most casual of casuals. Also not everyone hates WatchMojo if they're not plugged into the internet all the time. Just like IGN they're big for the "normies"
Anyone who tries to put a massive amount of work into finding and playing a bunch of fighting games and deciding which games are good, are not really casual gamers.
This is why I like Max. Most people in the fgc would look at this list as another shitty take watch MOJO list. But he sees it as a way to take data and apply that to growing the community as a whole. That's so fucking cool.
This is why Max is so good, he offers something unique. Take any random average fgc content creator and his reaction to the list would've just been "omg what a bunch of scrub shit, these morons don't know shit, yada yada yada", but Max can understand and communicate with a different perspective. Great stuff.
Max's position in FGC feels like a solid bridge between the professionals' side and the casuals' side. Although some of his commentaries sway towards the appeal of casuals (which I'm completely OK with, because I'm a casual and we were all casuals at some point) I think he can manage to maintain a balance.
I feel that Max is just trying not to hurt people's feelings and not gate keep because growth is great for the community but like any typical FGC person he most likely wouldn't consider many of these as fighting games or top 20 material in a "of all time" list.
Mk9, Tekken 5, Street Fighter 2/SF4, and Smash were the games that really pulled me in from casual to semi-professional FG viewer/player. I really loved these games a lot and they definitely do a lot for me nostalgic wise.
Tekken and Smash were the big ones for me too tbh. Tekken in general introduced me to FGs (including Smash, not the reverse as it usually happens lmao)
Nothings wrong with them. Its mostly just alot of people lost interest in looking at lists but some people still watch them so thats good. There just people with their own opinions like everyone else. Though some people may get a negative feeling from them because sometimes it seems as though their lists are fact but for the most part, i think their fine
@@accwontletmereplyanti-mobm7104 it's just their lists kind of got repetitive and some were pretty obvious or just had dumb choices. like look up any of their anime lists and there are issues. doesn't help their scripts for their videos is dog water bad. i think they just pick from a hat, say something we already know like "why this is great" and move on. WatchMojo is a laughing stock in making lists and would be the top if not for sites like CBR... never look up CBR. your mind would lose brain cells.
MVC2 definitely is one of the most well-known fighting games for casuals. MVC2 is one the arcade games that took most of my quarters. I used to see that machine everywhere.
My sister has only ever enjoyed playing 3 videogames in her entire life: Pharaoh (PC), The Sims 4, and Tekken 3, so yeah I agree that Tekken 3 is a cultural touchstone of sorts.
Dude I grew up with a ps1 but never played any tekken game, until a few days ago when I got a psx emulator for my android and played tekken 3 for the first time. When I tell you my jaw dropped at how many different modes there were... you don't see that much content now in 2023 over 25 years later!
I was never deep into fighting games but I played a lot of Tekken 3 in the 90's. Me and my cousin loved Ball Mode, it's a shame it took them like 25 years to bring it back into the series lol.
As someone who is friends with a lot of people who play games casually i can confirm KI is a very positively talked about game. I always found it cool that KI was able to capture both super hardcore and super casual players.
As a casual fighting game fan, I fucking love KI. I was surprised with Max’s reaction to KI being listed so high. As much as he’s played that game on this channel, I’d assume he holds it in higher regard.
@@Hansbricks14 Not just played, he actually worked on KI, he was hired to make character trailers for it and I believe made the season trailers as well.

Tekken 3 was my first fighting game when I was a little kid playing video games with my mom for the first time. It was a blast, and I spent a lot of time trying to unlock characters and just learn how to play it. I wasn’t good, I was a dumb kid after all. But I had a lot of fun with it and I probably wouldn’t like fighting games at all if I hadn’t played it.
I used to work at a bar/old-school arcade and one of the machines they have was an old blast city MvC2, and it was easily one of the highest earners for fighting game cabinets they have out.
As a casual, I will say I really have a high appreciation for Injustice 2. It's a very visually pleasing game with solid core game play, lots of content, and customization. Yes it got a little zoner friendly, and you had broken ass characters like Firestorm, but I think the game at its core mechanically is really solid. Had some of their most creative characters.
As a sweaty FGC enthusiast I also enjoyed Injustice 2 a lot. Most fighting games I only ever play with my friends but with Injustice 2 I actually played online a good bit. Really hoping we get an Injustice 3 soon
Injustice was popular and had a long tournament life. I honestly feel this "dood" needs to get off his high horse. The way this guy reacted to Injustice's inclusion would have made you think it was a game like World of Warcraft or Super Mario Bros 2. So shocking that a title made by a known fighting game developer made a list of top 20 fighting games. And people in the comments think his behavior is "positive" and "welcoming of the FGC". I swear, people nowadays are so fucking clueless.
@@catisreckless4647 He had that reaction because IJ2 had extremely poor balancing for a long time and was actually kind of a flop because of it. Not sure where you got that it had a "long tournament life" because it didn't. It has good base mechanics and good customization but the lack of any kind of balancing kinda killed it for serious competitive tournaments in the FGC. It's a heavily casual game and there's nothing wrong with that. It just wasn't genre changing like you would expect on a top 20 list. I wouldn't have it in a top 20. Hell, I enjoy the hell out of DBZ FighterZ and I wouldn't have it as high as it is on this list. I don't even know if I would place it top 20 and certainly not at #5. There's A LOT of fighting games that were genre changing and foundation laying that aren't on this list. IJ2 is definitely neither of them. Hence his reaction, so he isn't on any kind of high horse. So I'm not sure were you're getting that unless you just didn't listen to anything he said or just didn't understand what he's saying.
well, now you know what we need? i think we need max doing his own list of top 20 best fighting games so we can see it from his professional/veteran perspective on the matter.
No, we don't need Max doing his own list, specifically because it would be very predictable. We already know 3rd Strike, Super 2 Turbo or MVC2 would be at the top, we already know SamSho would be in there somewhere, we already know Guilty Gear would be near the top. Max's list would pretty much be OUR list, and we don't need to know what WE would put as our top 20, because we already know what we know... y'know?!😅
Since he's said it enough already there's an echo chamber going on with what we all want out of a fighting game, I think it's going to be predictable especially without a one per franchise clause.
Great video as usual, Max. As a casual fighting game player I'll give my top 10 as well. 10) Garou: Mark of the Wolves: While the roster is small, every character feels unique. Gameplay is fluid, looks very stylish. 9) Skullgirls: Good roster. Gameplay's really good considering it's an indie game, the hand drawn animations are really well made. Fantastic soundtrack. 8) Mortal Kombat 9: Arguably the best gameplay in the series. Story mode was pretty cool. Sort of revived a franchise that had taken a few missteps in the previous entries. 7) Gundam Wing: Endless Duel: Only released in Japan. Overall a solid experience. Sound effects and screen shaking make the mechs feel heavy. I'd argue it's the first fighting game to get mecha combat right. 6) Joy Mech Fight: Another Japan-only game. Interesting mechanics. Impressive variety of moves and surprising depth considering it's an 8-bit fighting game. 5) Samurai Shodown 4: Great atmosphere, big roster. Gameplay was good. 4) Tekken 3: Refined the 3D fighting game genre and popularized it. 3) Street Fighter IV: Brought a lot of casuals back to the series. Relatively low skill floor and very high skill ceiling. Massive roster. Gameplay is great. 2) King of Fighters '98: Huge roster. Best gameplay and soundtrack in the series. Easy to learn, hard to master. 1) Street Fighter II: Holds up to this day. Started a lot of trends in the genre, popularized it. It's easy to pick up, has a varied enough roster to appeal to people with different playstyles. Haven't played enough Guilty Gear (never found a character that fits my playstyle) or 3D fighting games (I've played some DOA 4 and 5, some Virtua Fighter 2 and 5, and some Soul Calibur 3) for them to make the list.
A hidden gem on the Wii and one of my all time favourite fighting games of all time. Castlevania Judgement… no sorry that one still hurts. It’s… Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. One of the easiest yet funnest yet just feel enough fighting games. I could get my casual friends into it and could still get into some really competitive matches with my more fighting game friends as well. Had over 180hours total play time into it, was the number one pick up and play in high school for me and the guys who ditched classes lol.
I love that game as well it’s so sad it never got a multi port release… it being a Wii exclusive really hurt the sales for it a lot.. a PS3 release would’ve been perfect for the games community. I still own my copy of the game, will never get rid of it.
Seeing Skullgirls so high makes some sense to me, since when I was probably 13 my brother who was 10 or 11 at the time showed me this fighting game he got for cheap on his new laptop and we played it before realizing we had no clue what we’re doing. Idk why but Skullgirls is so cool from a casual perspective and its lower / indie game pricing makes it so enticing to a casual.
It's a well-made game that looks great, has a generous amount of humour, and isn't entrenched in tons of sequels no one aside from their own fans care about. There's also the indie appeal as you don't expect the same kind of experience from those games as from high budget games. There are lots of reasons to like it.
Skullgirls is Marvel vs Capcom 2 with a lot of content, great animations and a lot of work put into the tutorials. Yes, you're gonna get bodied if you go online, but it's clear that there was a lot of work put into making Skullgirls as enjoyable as possible even if you're bad at the game.
@b.a. Because normie fighting game consumers in current year will play the shit out of a new fighter for the first few months, playing online as long as the mechanics are alright, even if the rest of the game is *total tr@$h* and has zero story or any other legitimate content/features to speak of. They're convinced any other features (no matter how great and plentiful) take away from the core online experience. This is all that matters to them, and they can't see beyond it. *And this is the reason Street Fighter 5 was actually released in the worthIess shape it was in and Capcom ALMOST got away with it.*
A lot of people watched them when they first hit the scene, then we all slowly cottened on to how vannilla and souless a channel it is and the hype died down
I personally love seeing War of the Monsters on here. I recently repurchased it on PS4 and the controls most certainly don't hold up, but damn it was a really fun and imo fresh idea for a fighting game. Almost every level genuinely felt like a boss fight more than a standard fighting game.
From a casual perspective, I got Skullgirls at a time when I was open to learning a game of that style (a fighting game, as opposed to my usual choice of mostly rpgs). I’d played fighting games when I was younger (Clay Fighter and Smash Bros on N64 and later Smash Brawl) but I was too young to understand what I was doing and just had fun pushing buttons. I got Skullgirls as part of a Humble Bundle and it was my proper introduction to fighting games, with my interest developing more around five years later when my friend bought Blazblue Centralfiction and invited me to play it with him at his place. I’ve been a strong casual fan ever since. I love fighting games, but don’t get serious in them due to not having someone to regularly play against in Australia. I’d definitely say Skullgirls was important to me becoming a casual fighting game player at all, so I’m glad it’s shown up on this list and agree with Max’s take on where it should be
Clay fighter... Haha classic. If u can get past the sex appeal of Dead or Alive, it's a great casual 3D fighter. Simple control scheme and flashy moves, just fun overall. Played the hell outta doa5. I should def give skullgirls a shot. I bought it but never played it lol
You should really look into fightcade 2. You can be out in Australia with crappy internet and still get good non laggy games with people all over the world and there's just tons and tons and tons of games Classics to play
I think that Killer Instinct is appealing because it has a universal combo system. New players who learn the basics can pick up any character and still do something that looks cool. It's easy to pick up but crazy hard to master.
Thank you, Max. It would have been so easy to make a video just bashing this list simply to get the crowd riled up and aim for likes, and just… be a bully to casual fans. Instead, you took the high road and approached this list like a professional, and I want you to know it is appreciated. Happy Easter, bro!
Injustice 2 would be in my top10 and I've been a a hard-core fighting game fanatic for 23 years, also a massive followers of the fgc. Game's story mode and customisation was mindblowing, and it made for an incredible single player experience, rare for a fighting game of this gen
It also just felt good to play. Funnily enough I hated Injustice 1 for how stiff it felt but they cleaned that up in 2. It was one game I actually labbed like crazy yo get my Atrocitus combos down and played online so much I lost track of the hours I put into the grind. Loved that game so much and I'm itching for a 3rd (and hopefully less zone heavy) installment.
@@TaskMaster5 I 100% agree, I felt like the fluidity and more intuitive gameplay was lost agenda in Mk11. I loved Poison Ivy, secondaries were Robin & Joker got their legendary gear and everything! Yes they do need to increase anti zoning I guess, to get more casual players into the game more than anything.
Love you Max, it makes me happy that you find value in stuff like this, of course it's important to see the perspective of casuals, it's a big part to take into consideration for every fighting game, would be nice to see your personal list!
Ok to be fair Def Jam has gotten a huge tournament push over the years. Money matches as well. It has fighting mechanics to be a grappler title. I can't get mad at that being in the top twenty
@@chFRESCO that would be a good idea. I'd also like it if they featured certain rappers to show up in their prime, like 1999 DMX, 2005 Jeezy, or 2004 Game.
Yeah Def Jam Fight for NY was a big thing..then they killed the franchise with Def Jam: Icons (because they changed how the game worked and it just sucked)
The thing with SF2 over SF4 or SFV, I think is mostly because even casuals know how revolutionary this game was. Even my 65 years old mom who never played a fighting game know what a Hadoken is.
you’d think they’d at least put super turbo instead of world warrior tho, just for the compromise between casual audience and competitive player staying power
I'm glad you made a video on this because it's true that there is a huge disconnect between the hard core dedicated fighting game players and the casual audiences, and casual audiences make up a massive percentage of the people that buy and play fighting games, but I don't think the dedicated players realize that.
Scary thinking how many people play Anime fighters and have no clue about half the Dev's efforts yet they hold the power XD GG lore what's that am here for the funny Fan holding man
@@senritsujumpsuit6021 Meanwhile half the reason I got invested in GG as my go to fighting game is cause of the lore and worldbuilding besides the music and artstyle. Can't tell if that makes me a casual or the opposite. i played Arcade mode in Xrd and had a lot of fun seeing every character's arcade route. It just clicked.
Some hardcore gamers don't understand that gatekeeping will ultimately kill what they love. Casuals(I am one) are needed to generate enough revenue to keep franchises going and growing. There needs to be a balance in design and game mechanics that appeals to both sides. A game that only hardcore gamers can get into easily will not do well, but there should be enough content and difficulty to hold players' attention past the initial release.
@@senritsujumpsuit6021 it doesn't matter if they show up for the "funny fan holding man" though. Solidly good games will lure new players in with such things but have the lore and content to turn those passing players into fans. Fandoms that scare off new players will eventually regret it. Everyone is a new player at some point.
Such a refreshing view, Casual players aren't the enemy. Fighting games have always seemed really complicated and the skill wall so big, but this has me wanting to try something like mortal kombat, something i've not played since MK2 on the megadrive/genesis.
I’m a very casual fighting game player, and honestly I really loved Injustice 2. I’d say it is my favourite fighting game. Not because of the characters or cosmetics, but because I could get into it. I had so much fun spending time in practice mode just doing combos. I even got each character’s legendary item (including dlc characters). I actually find that Netherealm games since MK9 have been the most fun for me. I really only have a decade of playing fighting games, and I still mostly play other types of games. Injustice 2 was the first fighting game that I really devoted a lot time to and I haven’t put in that much time into a fighting game since. I wish I could be decent at a bunch of fighting games but I lack time, knowledge, money, and hand dexterity for stick motions. Anyway, I am grateful for Max and others for teaching and entertaining me through their videos over the years. Thanks.
I liked the praise for Project Justice since it's not only so well made but has a fairly deep story which was rare at the time. Capcom needs to re-release it.
I agree *COMPLETELY* with this comment and the first 3 replies to it. I'd also be equally fIipping out over a re-release of the most complete version of Rival Schools (Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2) with its create-a-character etc to be 'released' in English.
Wonderful input from a hardcore fighting game veteran. I hope more casual players will try out newer release fighting games and make the online experience more diverse.
Def Jam Vendetta was a wrestling game. Fight for New York was a fighting game with different fighting styles besides wrestling. It had street fighting, karate, submission and Kung Fu. Combining 3 styles creates unique fighting styles.
Always appreciated Max's indepth knowledge of fighting games. Has had me trying out fighting games I wouldn't have before. This was a treat! Thank you!
Huh, this’ll be interesting. I’d actually like to see Max do this more often. Just react to fighting game content made by other youtubers. There’s a lot of interesting stuff you can find like why a character or move is good or bad, the history of certain characters in a game or franchise (recently watched a pretty good video on Akuma’s history in Tekken 7) or just list videos like this going over best and worst characters, bosses, games, etc. There’s a lot out there and it’d be interesting to see Max react to it.
I'd love Max to cover some of SugarPunch Design Works' content. But his interest in that content might vary heavily depending on the games he's passionate about. He'd probably love the analysis of character/animation work of Capcom characters, but I doubt he cares about the deeper layers of lets say Guilty Gear music that SugarPunch covers, because Max brushes off anything GG lore related. Shame cause I really like that stuff, but Max is Max and obviously, I cant tell him what to think.
@@leithaziz2716 SugarPunch has incredible content on fighting games and even Monster Hunter which aren't even long videos (anthology of analysis of NRS animation aside). It would be nice for that sort of thing to get signal boosted more, but I'm not really into react content from Max and friends beyond trailers and supers.
@@thelastgogeta Understandable. I think I simply want a shoutouts to SugarPunch more than anything. His channel is massively underrated for the quality he puts out. His content also appeals to the side of me that's interested in the genre beyond just the mechanics and high level meta, and I think that's important for a lot of casual fans. We kinda need more channels like his.
I’d like max to look at hi buff Gigas video of the tekken elden ring costumes other costume vids and the moded characters like Bruce and roger in tekken 7, just to see how the next gen of fighting games can be with getting better support and things wanted from dedicated people than just the big companies..
Since when I first heard about Darkstalkers, power stone, and rival schools. I've been really interested in those games and I've always wanted to play them. And this year might actually be the chance I could play them all.
I've watched every episode of Excellent Adventures and many other FGC videos (Max closing in on MR & Goo), along with every documentary I could find. Ultimately I'd still be a casual player with fighting games, even after I bought a Hitstick years ago. It's a genre I'm always wanting to dive further into but I just haven't put the time in yet. Casual gaming is very important going forward for this genre, it's the best local co-op experience left IMO and my and my friends play various games ranging from NES to current gen on party nights and such.
Watchmojo has a formula of 1 entry per franchise so their lists aren't consumed by just a couple of franchises. It lets them keep their lists more marketable to keep watching, but at the same time once they moved to the top 20 format they start to scrape the bottom of the barrel for entries, ala War of the Monsters
@@Runegrem I mean say what you will but Tekken 3, one of the most popular games from one of the if not the biggest (outside of Smash) figthing game franchise didn't make it into the top 10 I don't really like Watchmojo and there are some odd choices but this list isn't about sales and popularity
Hey Max! I really love that, while you're obviously very passionate about fighting games and deeply involved in hardcore fighting game communities, you still understand that every game, regardless of genre, NEEDS casual players in order to function. The hardcore are such a tiny, tiny minority of any fanbase that, if those were the only people playing, any game would die.
So I found the channel several years ago because of the Final Fantasy and Resident Evil content. I'm not a fighting game fan. I have played a few here and there Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Soul Calibur and I really do enjoy them especially when I have a friend on the couch with me playing or at an arcade back in the day but I am super casual. I find this kind of video really interesting, I get to see a "hardcore" fighting game fan's perspective on a genre I know so little about and it makes me want to learn more and try new fighting games I have never heard of. Keep up the awesome content.
idk why Injustice 2 gets shit on so much. i poured nearly 400 hours into that game, customizing the characters, learning so many characters, and enjoying grinding for gear. IJ2 is my favorite fighting game honestly. and before someone shits on my opinion, I still love shit like Tekken, MvC, Soul Calibur, etc.
Agreed personally while I'm more of an mk guy than injustice I think I2 is a better game than alot of others on this list like sc6 and dare I say KI even imo among others they put in between. But remember they also put def jam on here which isn't even a FG honestly.
people really go out of their way to shit on NRS animations. It's the same sort of "joke" you get from people who constantly say "smash isn't a fighting game" every 5 seconds. Part of it is tribalism(IE PC master race, Xbox sucks) because fighting game communities used to be so fractured from one another, and some still are.
@@raisinbman I know I never understood that especially when NRS uses mo-cap and real martial artists so if anything their animations are more realistic than other games(not drawn or CGI animations) that was always a dumb argument I felt lol.
I really prefer Injustice more. Thing is Injustice 2 has a great story in it, and with games like MK and Injustice, the story matters in fighting games. So for a casual/competitive fighting game, it’s great.
watching this editing and your reactions max was wonderful lol and super interesting takes ofc throughout the watchmojo vid. glad you got this reaction out
This would make a good podcast topic for triple KO braking down the list from a fighting game fans perspective and taking each game on the list and making a case both for and against its inclusion on the list.
As someone who is between casual and hardcore fighting gamers I can relate to this list a bit. Granted I know of the more niche games since I watch evo and other fighting tournaments. However I can also see how ppl are skeptical because it’s watchmojo 😂
I don’t mind this list too much but Def Jam: Fight For NY should at the very least be in the top 10. It’s personally in my top 5 of all time fighting games.
As a casual fighting game player, I can say that Power Stone would be in my top 3. That game is so much fun. The other two would likely be Soul Caliber 2 and Guilty Gear Strive.
Right but the way max would see and make this list is by genre defining and how good the gameplay is. Injustice 2 is well made and content rich but gameplay is nothing new.
I have no problem with injustice 2 being on a top 20 list. Incredible graphics, fun gameplay, great roster, fun dlc, insane story for a fighting game, customization out the butt, character interactions. Stuff was broken online like deadshot, but no game is perfect x
Right? Being all upitty or scoffing at it. The game was just crazy good looking, a damn good in-depth story mode, fantastic motion/facial capture, a crazy good roster from a VERY popular comic industry as well as some great guest picks.....yeah no shit it's gonna be on a lot of people's lists...
Lets be real, if they ever reboot the entire movie universe Injustice 2 is so influential in ways that cartoons used to be that Injustice is now what kids and teens feel that DC should look. Like in other words the movies should look like this game.
Im suprised Max hasnt heard of Watchmojo before this. I would not say their picks tell the big picture that Max might be looking for. He's got the right idea, but couldnt have picked a worse "Top X" channel. Allthough while I am salty about the lack of some games, this list wasnt that bad. At the very least, it could have been so much worse.
I'm pretty casual and I really loved playing Killer Instinct and watching people play it. Only fighting games I generally played was Tekken 3, all King of fighters up to 2000, Mortal Kombat 9 and then KI.
I'm glad to see dd:ffny get some love. It was one of my favorite fighting games ever. I always wanted remake or for playstation to re-release the first 2 games in HD.
Interesting take on this list MAX. Also, THAT PHENOMENAL EDITING on the first 10 seconds!! Lets give Max’s editor a STANDING OVATION!! He deserves it!! 🤣
I think part of the reason this list has so many hot takes is because they limited themselves to one game per franchise, really limits your options a lot
First time I played GG Strive through Steam Play Together, it was so much fun knowing only SF2 moves and basic techniques but no strings. Easy to pick up and play, hilariously fun if spamming and doing unexpected moves, and should have made this list in the top 10.
Tekken will always be my number one since fighters from all different styles will see some accurate representations of their martial arts. I remember for Fahkumram they got Saenchai to do motion captures for the character. So you see real moves from a Muay Thai legend in game.
I totally agree with Max, lists like this ARE valuable and should be paid attention to. There are perspectives the people making these things have that we don't think of as psychotic supergamers who play everything lol. I enjoy watching stuff like this just out of the curiosity to see what's resonating with 'normal' people, which is not derogatory at all, btw.
I would love to see Max make some sort of list of the types of players and what he sees as criteria for that category. For example I consider myself a casual player, but then some of the commentary from Max makes me wonder if I can consider myself one. But the if not a casual, then what else is there since I'm definitely not a pro player. Maybe defining this may help answer some of the questions about the direction of fighting games and the community.
@@CoffeePotGames I think that title has to go towards MK4 or Armageddon. Unless we're only counting games made under the NRS name and not Midway though. Though even then, while I'm not sure I'd disagree that Injustice 1 was their worst, it's still a good game.
Dude war of the monsters was my favorite game on the PS2. I played that game for 100s of hours because the physics interactions felt so incredible for the time. I'd 100% play a modern version of that shit
I was very surprised to see Skullgirls that high, that's one I would absolutely put in my top 5 but I didn't know it had that much reach with a casual audience
Max, that was very enjoyable to watch. I believe people would like more videos of you reacting to other lists, because you really know what you're talking about.
Watching your content, I feel like I’ve missed out on something amazing in fighting games. They’ve just never grabbed me like that. I love the MvC games, the Street Fighters, even the old school SNES KI games, but I see a game like Guilty Gear Strive and I just feel completely out of my element. It looks amazing.
I think it makes sense, from a casual perspective, that SF2 is rated higher than the other SF games. A lot of people, me included, played it and its updates on the Super Nintendo. It was a simple, easy to pick up / hard to master kind of game. Other versions have much more you need to learn, like combos, super moves, ultra moves, focus attacks, v-trigger, v-skill, etc...
13:58 Max’s face says it all! And I had the similar reaction… SC6?! Personally, I would argue Soul Calibur 3. That game had a phenomenal roster, many arenas, varied modes, and it was the first in the series to let you create custom fighters.

I think you're probably right. Allthough I really cant tell if im coping, but the implication is a bit sus from my perspective.
Blazblue was on the same level of popularity as Guilty Gear was at the time. It wasnt until DBZ Fighters that put Arcsys on the map then Strive got attention
Yeah, "too niche" might not be accurate. It might just not be casual friendly enough.
Probably not SFV though lol
@@GameTroll117 says the casual....proving max right.
One per franchise help to show where the serie is overall picture around all the other serie and which of them is the better title.
It still blows my mind to this day that a game exists where you can have Kazuya Mishima, Donkey Kong, Sora, and Solid Snake face off in a Pokémon Stadium. And you don't need to mod anything to do it. Wild.
It’s wild

Truth be told, EVO's attendance numbers and Twitch viewership are definitely going to be down significantly after the loss of Smash this year. It's very much what draws the biggest crowd. I'm shocked and kind of offended that Blazblue took Guilty Gear's spot on the list, though.
@@TFGRhinehart Blazblue series as a whole outsold Guilty Gear especially here in Asia where it had been the top anime fighter until Strive, it's the least niche of all anime fighters outside of DBFZ. Injustice 2 is one of the few fighting games along with smash that I can get my casual friends to play purely due to the fact that they like the DC Universe
So yeah Max's point about casual people needing something tangible to get attached to or interested in is definitely true
@@thebrightestsun4685
Terminator ain’t low tier and Sub Zero ain’t all that
The best way to draw in players for fighting games is to give them characters they already have an attachment to.
This is the channel that put fucking one of the mortal Kombat moives and DB devolution on a ninja moive list
That's what makes it funny and gets more views lol. Seeing the ridiculous takes some people have. If it was a serious list it may be less entertaining

Yup this comment is spot on
I feel that Max is just trying not to hurt people's feelings and not gate keep because growth is great for the community but like any typical FGC person he most likely wouldn't consider many of these as fighting games or top 20 material in a "of all time" list.

I love that game as well it’s so sad it never got a multi port release… it being a Wii exclusive really hurt the sales for it a lot.. a PS3 release would’ve been perfect for the games community. I still own my copy of the game, will never get rid of it.
And it has Batsu and Alex.
If that game released on ps and Xbox it would’ve blown up I think. Wii exclusive was such a mistake.
@@AnotherDuck that and every single character is fun and viable. No one character is definitively better than another. The devs did an amazing job
@@AnotherDuck Dont forget the most important aspect of Skullgirls
Cute girls
Skullgirls is Marvel vs Capcom 2 with a lot of content, great animations and a lot of work put into the tutorials. Yes, you're gonna get bodied if you go online, but it's clear that there was a lot of work put into making Skullgirls as enjoyable as possible even if you're bad at the game.
@@jeppyjep That's included in "looks great". ;)
I could see injustice 2 being top 20 for the story mode alone.
One of the few times I've enjoyed a fighting game's story mode that isn't an Anime game
Gameplay Over Story, My Dude.
@@unclepaul1995 yeah, say that to a casual player
@@unclepaul1995 Why are people not allowed to appreciate a feature that the game developers included in the game?
Seeing Max react to a Watchmojo list is flashing me back to when i used to watch them when i was younger
Okay I am actually floored by how well Max was able to predict what the top slots were going to be. He's like a sociologist of FGs
Bro I got Skullgirls for the same reason. 🤝
I haven't been into fighting games lately but I'd say it's my all time favorite in the genre.
I think that Killer Instinct is appealing because it has a universal combo system. New players who learn the basics can pick up any character and still do something that looks cool. It's easy to pick up but crazy hard to master.
Killer Instinct is so popular for casuals that even appears standard on all three Kissing Booth movies. It's an amazing game, so it is well deserved.
@YaBoiiUnclePhil your words, not mine - you didn't like it and that's okay 👌🏿
@yaboiiunclephil1552 it's ok for people to like things you don't like.
@yaboiiunclephil1552injustice 2 is good. F your thoughts.
Love you Max, it makes me happy that you find value in stuff like this, of course it's important to see the perspective of casuals, it's a big part to take into consideration for every fighting game, would be nice to see your personal list!
Agreed.
Ok to be fair Def Jam has gotten a huge tournament push over the years. Money matches as well. It has fighting mechanics to be a grappler title. I can't get mad at that being in the top twenty
Hopefully they'd make another game, but it's one of those types of things that would be impossible to make today
@@chaelmavik Not impossible. Battle Rappers would be perfect for a Fight for NY.
Yea its got a special place in my heart...playing in the arcade in 1992...I can smell it now.
you’d think they’d at least put super turbo instead of world warrior tho, just for the compromise between casual audience and competitive player staying power
SFIV is the GOAT imo
I'm glad you made a video on this because it's true that there is a huge disconnect between the hard core dedicated fighting game players and the casual audiences, and casual audiences make up a massive percentage of the people that buy and play fighting games, but I don't think the dedicated players realize that.
Scary thinking how many people play Anime fighters and have no clue about half the Dev's efforts yet they hold the power XD
GG lore what's that am here for the funny Fan holding man
@@senritsujumpsuit6021 Meanwhile half the reason I got invested in GG as my go to fighting game is cause of the lore and worldbuilding besides the music and artstyle. Can't tell if that makes me a casual or the opposite. i played Arcade mode in Xrd and had a lot of fun seeing every character's arcade route. It just clicked.
Hi Thorgi. I love your build the roster videos. Hope you are doing well
Some hardcore gamers don't understand that gatekeeping will ultimately kill what they love.
Capcom needs to re-release it.
and rival schools
@@demetriuservin2874 exactly ill pay good money for a re-release.
With create a character.
I agree *COMPLETELY* with this comment and the first 3 replies to it. I'd also be equally fIipping out over a re-release of the most complete version of Rival Schools (Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2) with its create-a-character etc to be 'released' in English.
Narrator: Making the new Killer Instinct wasn't easy but it's one of the best fighting games ever
Max: Dab me up, dab me up
Xbox one launch title babyyyyy
Wonderful input from a hardcore fighting game veteran. I hope more casual players will try out newer release fighting games and make the online experience more diverse.
i played soul calibur 2 on my PS2 a year or two back and wow I was really taken aback with how smooth it looks and how the graphics looked.
We kinda need more channels like his.
show Max "why you should play fighting games" by the Cosmonaut
I’d like max to look at hi buff Gigas video of the tekken elden ring costumes other costume vids and the moded characters like Bruce and roger in tekken 7, just to see how the next gen of fighting games can be with getting better support and things wanted from dedicated people than just the big companies..
Since when I first heard about Darkstalkers, power stone, and rival schools. I've been really interested in those games and I've always wanted to play them. And this year might actually be the chance I could play them all.
Love it. A normal guy giving his honest reactions. He's the only streamer I watch react videos of.
Yeah, because at least three SF games would be on the list.
Would love to see Max make a "top 20 fighting games of all time" video.
Yeah. That would actually have some opinions and thought put into it, rather than just some sales and popularity statistics mashed into a list.
16 of the games will be capcom games and the other 4 will be KI classic, KI 2013, VF2 and Soul calibur
@@Runegrem I mean say what you will but Tekken 3, one of the most popular games from one of the if not the biggest (outside of Smash) figthing game franchise didn't make it into the top 10
I don't really like Watchmojo and there are some odd choices but this list isn't about sales and popularity
I'm pretty sure he'll add dong dong never die
the list is like a mix of welcome surprises and wtf's in the most entertaining way possible
This tends to be Watchmojo for me. I just think a lot of their lists are fun
For someone whose really casual for fighting games I loved Injustice 2 just for the Campaign
idk why Injustice 2 gets shit on so much. i poured nearly 400 hours into that game, customizing the characters, learning so many characters, and enjoying grinding for gear. IJ2 is my favorite fighting game honestly. and before someone shits on my opinion, I still love shit like Tekken, MvC, Soul Calibur, etc.
I feel the same way. I have play so many hours when the game first came out.
I'm definitely down for more max reacts, even if it's margaritaville with the salt he has with stuff like this, lol
Lol Margaritaville Salt. That's good.
Love that you acknowledged the casual perspective as legitimate while offering your own takes!
watching this editing and your reactions max was wonderful lol and super interesting takes ofc throughout the watchmojo vid. glad you got this reaction out
This would make a good podcast topic for triple KO braking down the list from a fighting game fans perspective and taking each game on the list and making a case both for and against its inclusion on the list.
Wonder if he plans to make his own version of top 20 then. Would be interesting.
I can see him putting dbz fighterz some street fighters some mk
As someone who is between casual and hardcore fighting gamers I can relate to this list a bit. Granted I know of the more niche games since I watch evo and other fighting tournaments. However I can also see how ppl are skeptical because it’s watchmojo 😂
I don’t mind this list too much but Def Jam: Fight For NY should at the very least be in the top 10. It’s personally in my top 5 of all time fighting games.
I'm just happy its on here
For noob it's good one
As a casual fighting game player, I can say that Power Stone would be in my top 3. That game is so much fun.
The other two would likely be Soul Caliber 2 and Guilty Gear Strive.
I really like Injustice 2 tbh. The story was great, the roster was wild and it played really well.
Max is just salty because there's no Batgirl in Injustice 2
Right but the way max would see and make this list is by genre defining and how good the gameplay is. Injustice 2 is well made and content rich but gameplay is nothing new.
And I Thought The Story Was Bad. Evil SuperMens are Overrated, Wonder Woman Being a Bad Character, And Some Only get One Fight, ONE FIGHT!
@@K4L-ZL I don't love Injustice 2, but 3 button fighters can have amazing gameplay, like Virtua Fighter but I mean whatever think what you want
The gear system was also a nice touch
I have no problem with injustice 2 being on a top 20 list. Incredible graphics, fun gameplay, great roster, fun dlc, insane story for a fighting game, customization out the butt, character interactions. Stuff was broken online like deadshot, but no game is perfect x
Right? Being all upitty or scoffing at it. The game was just crazy good looking, a damn good in-depth story mode, fantastic motion/facial capture, a crazy good roster from a VERY popular comic industry as well as some great guest picks.....yeah no shit it's gonna be on a lot of people's lists...
Just wish Netherrealm could balance their zoners and projectiles because it always ends up being the most broken shit lol.
Lets be real, if they ever reboot the entire movie universe Injustice 2 is so influential in ways that cartoons used to be that Injustice is now what kids and teens feel that DC should look. Like in other words the movies should look like this game.
Idk why max made those comments, injustice 2 is insanely fun to play with friends.
But the game is absolute shit?
It's literally fucking garbage. I wouldn't play it for free
WatchMojo is the epitome of quantity over quality.
True and the funny thing is WatchMojo are aware of the infamy of their lists and kinda just embrace the scorn lol!
They're the epitome of "view count is the only thing that matters".
Trust me this was good compared to the anime videos dear God their animated videos are on a another scale of terrible
that's why i've been lazy to watch watchmojo
I think part of the reason this list has so many hot takes is because they limited themselves to one game per franchise, really limits your options a lot
even when they limit one game per franchise, I think some of the franchise they didn't pick the best one
It's funny. When I saw WatchMojo had put up this list, I immediately thought "What would Max's take on this be?" I never imagined he'd actually do it!
I think Max should make a top 20 list of best fighting games of all times. Be kind of interesting to see what titles are on his radar.
First time I played GG Strive through Steam Play Together, it was so much fun knowing only SF2 moves and basic techniques but no strings. Easy to pick up and play, hilariously fun if spamming and doing unexpected moves, and should have made this list in the top 10.
I'm genuinely shocked and happy Soul Calibur 6 made the list. Though I expected 2 or 1 over 6 though.
Original ps1 soul blade for me!
Tekken will always be my number one since fighters from all different styles will see some accurate representations of their martial arts. I remember for Fahkumram they got Saenchai to do motion captures for the character. So you see real moves from a Muay Thai legend in game.
Yeah Tekken will always be #1 in my heart
Really cool to see Max's take on this list. And for what it's worth, at least Watchmojo gives us access to content like this.
Freaking laugh a lot with the intro hahaha
Not even 10 seconds in and Max has a total bruh moment.
Even I, who really dislikes NRS games, know that Injustice 1 is way better than Injustice 2.
@@MisterCrim oh god no. IJ1 is NRS worst game imo
@@CoffeePotGames I think that title has to go towards MK4 or Armageddon. Unless we're only counting games made under the NRS name and not Midway though. Though even then, while I'm not sure I'd disagree that Injustice 1 was their worst, it's still a good game.
@@MisterCrim That is...definitely not true lmao what

Dude war of the monsters was my favorite game on the PS2. I played that game for 100s of hours because the physics interactions felt so incredible for the time. I'd 100% play a modern version of that shit
Hearing your feedback comparing this WM list should be something anyone with interest in fighting games should watch
I was very surprised to see Skullgirls that high, that's one I would absolutely put in my top 5 but I didn't know it had that much reach with a casual audience
The Kickstarter campaign was *nuts* back in the day. Word of mouth about it spread like wildfire.
It would've probably been even bigger if not for all the drama happening around the studio
Max, that was very enjoyable to watch. I believe people would like more videos of you reacting to other lists, because you really know what you're talking about.
I just saw a dude call max a casual because of injustice 2 I’m like 🤨 have you watch this channel at all
Watching your content, I feel like I’ve missed out on something amazing in fighting games. They’ve just never grabbed me like that. I love the MvC games, the Street Fighters, even the old school SNES KI games, but I see a game like Guilty Gear Strive and I just feel completely out of my element. It looks amazing.
Max is like the god father of fighting games the amount of history he knows and way he explains every game is top notch very good video 100% new sub
Skullgirls did really good--especially since its not a legacy and only has one game
Now I'm curious to see MAX's TOP 20 list
UP!
Now I wanna see Max react to watchmojo’s top 20 MH monsters list, because ooooh BOY! Is it SOMETHING!
13:58 Max’s face says it all! And I had the similar reaction… SC6?! Personally, I would argue Soul Calibur 3. That game had a phenomenal roster, many arenas, varied modes, and it was the first in the series to let you create custom fighters.
I expected SC2 to be honest. That game was huge back then with all the exclusive characters.
I would have picked SC2 but good lord did I love SC3. The roster, the chronicle, the secret night terror boss, oh man…
Yes and that campaign as well with all the challenges, i think mortal kombat 9 took inspiration from that mode.
Street Fighter 3, SF2, SF Alpha 2, SF4, MK9, KI (2019), Darkstalkers 3, VF2, VF5 Final Showdown, SC1, Tekken 3, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xird, Guilty Gear Strive, King of Fighters 13, MVC2, Last Blade 2, Samurai Showdown 2, Dragon Ball Fighterz, Tekken Tag.
I can't wait for the Def Jam stream, and the It Takes Two as well. Damn, Max makes a lot of promises.
