While Black Mesa's Xen is gorgeous and an improvement on the chapters, I think it really doesn't fit with Half Life Xen's ominous and desolate aesthetic. Instead, it opted for a more aquatic and "living" art direction, not just the change in direction but the BM chapters feels a lot more bloated unlike HL Xen which is like 30 minutes max. At the end of the day Black Mesa and Half Life play out completely different from one another and it's up to personal preference.
The original HL Xen was short and enigmatic, frustrating but energetic. Black Mesa's Xen was like Avatar with it being too damn long in places and downright illogical in many places.
Black Mesa in Xen is awesome up until about Halfway through Interloper where it jumps off a cliff, becomes utterly miserable and makes you appreciate the original.
I played the original after black mesa and i don't know why ypu would ever apreciate half life xen in any whay possibile, the levels are so shit a had to come back to it after 2 months and the nihilant fight made made me want to rip my hair out from how fucking boring and repetitive it was
xen is terrible asf, everything is 4x longer than it needs to be, forced puzzles are there every 2 mins, basically no enemies in first half and parts where you not gona shoot for half hour. most puzzles feels like they belong to different game and most have such idiotic outcome that it doesnt even make any sense. like in that factory you solving generators for half hour and than you just end up falling into the hole in the ground..... trash. just pure trash. how can you say that it feels connected when first level is open blue galaxy, second is yellow sunset and third is factory where enemies SPAWNS IN THE FUCKING AIR ABOVE LIKE 10X BCS ITS FUN! absolutely terrible and never should have been made, its so poorly made by trash level designers in factory i was so baffled how can you put so many puzzles back to back that i checked if i have still BLACK MESA in processes.
Looks like there are two camps, but gtfo black mesa haters. I’ve waited hl1 as it was developed, and enjoyed it so much. But black mesa and especially Xen are so much better. Original xen was just few stupid puzzles and two boss fights. But BM Xen, it’s a whole new game. Black Mesa is the best remaster ever created. And one of the best games.
As a very recent new player to the half life saga, I can agree with so much of this video. The facility levels are so much better written and actually feel less numerous and cheesy than the original. But the Xen levels in Black mesa are just another level of great. Interloper stretches on for a bit, but I actually can't hate that. The music, the atmosphere, the intensity, the lore, the development of the Vortigaunts, everything is just so well put together. It's funny that of all the half life games, my favorite is literally just a fan made remake of the original.
Black mesas xen still sucks it just focused on looking more pretty than playing good.
At least hl1s xen is like 20 minutes not 6 HOURS

I disagree. Xen overstayed it's welcome in Black Mesa. Started off good. 30 min later I just wanted it to end.
At least you dont take fall damage in black mesa xen. Unlike hl1 🤦♂️
@@neonflashsparkotron5435 at least hl1 had objectively the best enemy
Leeches!
@@denifnaf5874we are talking about Xen dumbass
@@denifnaf5874in half-life 2, they are there too.

No, it's not forced puzzles every 2 minutes in xen, its forced puzzles every 2 minutes in Interloper.
Skill issue
Why Xen Sucks and how Black Mesa made me appreciate the original more.
