If you're still around, I found this six years later and am going to do the same to my 2016 FLTRU Road Glide Ultra. Excellent video. The only thing I would like to do differently is a different taillight / license plate to have the license plate under the light. Thanks for showing all the details.
This is an EXCELLENT how to video. I've probably spent the better part of an hour searching an install "how to video". Others I've watched lacked a lot of clarity. You should teach class on making " How To Videos"!! Once again a great, great video. Thanks a million.
Your BIKE looks freakin' SWEET without that big ass'd bag on the BACK! Hoping you faired out well in the last 7 years buddy...thanks for posting this video!
Excellent video! Yes it's a long video, BUT I love how you don't cut out all the potential pitfalls you encounter so we know what we might expect. Worth the extra time I think. By the way, you have the cleanest most organized garage I've ever seen. :)
The BEST How-To video I have ever watched! I literally sat down with my iPad in my garage with the exact same parts and installed everything as demonstrated in this great video! Took me 2.5 cans of Diet Pepsi from start to finish. :) Thank you 'Sir!
Thank you so much for posting this video. With your help, I just finished installing this kit on my 2014 Ultra Ltd. I brought a laptop with me into the garage and referred back to your video every step of the way. Well done!
Thanks so much Joel for taking the time to share this install! Very informative and detailed. The last time I did this, Harley Davidson charged me $500 in Labor. Not this time!
I'd like to say, this man did an OUTSTANDING JOB in covering every point of the process and adding his personal views as to what should be done. Thoroughly went step by step. Super job man!! Thank you....big help!
I have been doing my own accessory installs for over 50 years. I've done 2 detach tour pack kits, one on a 1999 Electra Glide and 1 on a 2008 Road Glide, I swore I wouldn't do it again. After watching you Video I will DO IT again on my 2017 FLTRU. (same color as yours) FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! THANKS!!
Just want to say thank you for posting this video I followed this video and did it and it was a breeze, I’m not handy and this was a easy job for me so please guys if you guys are thinking of doing it save your $600 to $800 for labor and just do it yourself if I can do it anyone can!!
Joel .... Your ROCK!!!!!! I installed the kit following every second of this video. Maybe the most helpful I've ever seen. Especially loved the instruction on routing... Thanks so much bro....
I cant thank you enough for the video. I am not that practical so I was planning on taking my Ultra Low into HD to have the relocation kit fitted. Your video has given me the confidence to fit the kit myself. Thank you again. Dave. UK.
Dave, thank you so much for the compliment. I'm happy to hear the video will help you do it yourself and save some money. Take your time and I'm confident you will have no problem.
It's obviously been quite awhile since you did the video but it is still a great source of information for the install. I'll be tackling this once I get my solo seat delivered. I'm a little worried that I'll be able to tuck all the wires under that seat so wish me luck. Thanks again for the video.
To make it clean you could drill a hole run inside bags and back out on back side, that's how I ran mine along with my saddle bag speaker wires and all connections inside bag out of weather, but some don't want to drill holes in their bags. Great Vid sir.
Just done this to my 2020 ultra limited, your video was on point and very helpful, never read the instructions just watched your video a few times and done it , thanks
@@toddferrell518 weird my engine light is on and the blinker on the dash goes fast hmm we’ll take er in to the dealer for a an oil change get it straightend out thanks.
Thanks so much for your detailed video. Excellent job. I just completed the install on my 2017 Limited Low, following your video the entire way. If our paths ever cross, drinks will be on me. Cable management is a bit of challenge. Next, gotta build a shelf to store the tour pack.
Outstanding video, great and precise details! You did a phenomenal job. So much so, that someone with little to no experience could perform this job. That’s the true test and you accomplished it with flying colors! Thanks! God bless.
I learned a lot from this video. I appreciate your explanations - and the fact you didn't make it look overly simple nor overly difficult ... you showed small "problems" and also your thought process with some trials & errors re: how you overcame them. I definitely have confidence that I can do this install. As a side note, my local H-D dealer's labor rate is $119/hr. H-D lists the install time as 2.5 hours in the instructions (PDF downloadable at the H-D store under "More Info" below this parts listing). However, my dealer wants $416.50 to install this. When I questioned the Service Writer, he stated "our Service Manager has a list of prices for parts installations and that's what we have to go by [quote]". I replied, "so this is the Service Manager's decision, not the actual labor time". He quickly back-tracked, asked where I got the 2.5 hour install time (he asked "what book did you pull that labor time from?"), and he stated "oh, this definitely takes *A LOT* longer than 2.5 hours to install". Strange, because on my previous new H-D purchase I added this conversion kit into the sale & delivery set-up - and the total installation (including other add-ons I rolled into the new purchase) took no more than 3-hours to install (I know b/c I waited). Anyway, I love my Harley-Davidson but IMO - dealers price gouge too much (as does Harley-Davidson on the price of their accessories). Again, job well done with this installation video!
Thanks for the comments, Troy. I don’t believe it took me but about 3 hours to do the install and I was doing this for the first time and filming. So, the book has to be padded somewhat. I hate that some dealers pad it even more. Take your time and you shouldn’t have any problems. Then, use the $416 for another upgrade.
Thanks for making this video. It's going to be a big help. I got my Harley bracket kit in today and the instructions included in the kit are not very clear and understanding. This helped me without having to sit down and figure out those unclear instructions. You did a VERY professional install. Thanks so much for sharing this video with us. Ride Safe!! Mike Walters Alabama
Joel excellent video. I am an accountant by trade, and not very mechanical. I followed along with you while I installed the hardware on my 2017 CVO Road Glide Ultra. Worked like a charm. Thanks for doing this video. It helped me quite a bit. Ride Safe my friend. SFM
Excellent video! Very detailed and followed it exactly on my 17 Ultra Limited. Obviously the tour-pac is needed when my wife rides with me otherwise it looked like motorcycle mini-van. Now I have a twin cooled Street Glide when she doesn't. I even swapped out the seat with the stock Street Glide saddle I purchased from the money your video saved me over HD installing the kit. Kudos, great video!!
As everyone else said, great video. I had this kit on my 2014. I paid almost $500 for the dealer to do it. After watching this I'm going to try it on my 2018. When the tourpack was off I would fold the unused wires back under the seat, but I didn't have the driver backrest. Also, did i see a wire for a Sena Freewire. I was able to install mine to run into the compartment in the fairing from the back of the head unit. This eliminated any exposed wires. If you're interested I can give you the parts you'll need and a quick explanation of the install. Again, great video.
HappyJack, Thank you for your compliments. I wrap the wires under the seat as well. They’ll wrap around the rider backrest mount with no problem. I would be interested in the part number to move the Sena Freewire. I really don’t like the wire running from the console to the handle bars.
J J here is the part you will need. It adds an additional 7 pin socket to the bike. mstore.harley-davidson.com/store/boom%21-audio-music---comm-kit Remove the outer (front fairing) to expose the back of the head unit. There should be a plugged up white wire harness attached to the top of the stereo. Just plug this in and you have an additional 7 pin. It's up to you how you want to run it. I plugged in the sena wire, secured it with some electrical tape then ran the Sena wire into the little glove box on my Limited. I had to drill a hole about the size of a dime in the back of the little compartment to run the wire. You could theoretically also run power to the Freewire and leave it in the fairing. It was fairly simple.
JJ thank you so much. I've just purchased a 2017 FLHTK Police and wanted to be able to take off the tour pak and use a sissy bar. Your video made it an easy job. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video I didn’t know the installation was so simple until I watched your video and was gonna have dealer install this for me which would of cost me close to $500 for labor. I installed this myself last night and couldn’t be happier..Again thanks for posting this video! Stay safe and keep 2 wheels down bro.!
Thanks, John. Glad I could save you some money. I liked your comment about keeping two wheels down. I use, “Keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down” with those I fly with.
Fantastic video. Thank you very much for taking the time to make it, and for mentioning each of the tools needed as you went. I'll be tackling this tonight on my 17 Ultra Limited, and feel a lot more confident about it after watching your video!
Great video, I just got my first Harley and I am wanting to be able to take the box off back when I ride solo. I didn’t buy new one but it is new to me. Thanks for the very detailed video….
Been thinking about doing this ever since I got my RG Limited and felt it's top heavy. Doesn't look that hard to do. Since watching you I'm ready to go for it. One thing I may do differently, hide the antenna under the fairing. Thanks for taking time to show us how the average guy can do it.
This was a great video. I watched it several times before I installed it on my bike. I panicked when the attachment points in the front of the bracket were too wide. Upon reviewing the video I saw you had the same issue. Great job. Thank you very much.
Very informative. Will note that HD change a couple of things on the recent kit that was a little frustrating. The bag lights didn’t do the left and right ID nor male or female difference. So I had to hook it up and determine left and right connections. Plus they now don’t include the antenna kit. Sold separately of course for 80 dollars.
SUPER video, man! I have a 2018 Ultra that I've almost traded off simply because the center of gravity day-to-day with the Tour Pak is just a tad nerve wracking for a dude of my size and stature. Doesn't help that I'm semi-disabled, so that thing has to go except for must-have situations. This video was super helpful. Thanks for putting it up. Might tackle this later this spring.
Thanks for the video. I watched it all the way through before I put my kit on. The parts with how to run the wiring was really useful, the instructions basically say "replace a plug and push the wires under the seat". I did unscrew the 4 bolts for the top case and removed it all in one piece, put it down, and replaced the old bracket with the new one, I think it was a lot easier that way.
This is by far the best video on you tube for doing this, Covinced me to buy the Harley Kit the other kits are cheap made or do not have everything you need, Thanks a lot for the video.
Thank you for this video. I was looking for a solution like this and yours is really only the only applicable video.... and it's a very good video. Thank you ! Now I just have to wait for these to come back into stock.
Very informative video! I just purchased an Ultra Limited Low and would like to shed the extra weight of the tour pack when not touring. So, once I save up a few bucks, I fully intend to installed the kit. I will view your video many more times before I begin. I prefer doing my own work on my bike and saving on the cost for Harley service to do. thanks!!!
I wanted to post a follow-up comment: I installed my detachable kit today ... and I could NOT have done this without your video! H-D's instructions, 4 sets for the different components, lacked detail that you were able to provide with the video (and the grammatical errors at times are atrocious - it was obviously translated from a foreign language). I literally played your video on my laptop on the garage floor as I installed the kit (I did change the order from your video as I installed the lights last). The install took me all day - but it wasn't a continuous install (I had to take my dog to the vet, among other chores & distractions). This one thing baffled me for well over hour: the detachable rack/tour-pak support is narrower than the OEM ... specifically, the OEM rack is 11 1/8" wide whereas the rack in the kit is 10" wide. And just as in your video, the front of [my] rack clips/mounts onto the spacers - not onto the rubber coated "Docking Point" hardware! To me it seems obvious the rack *should* mount onto the docking point - why would it be called a docking point if it didn't, why bother to ensure the marks on the front docking points are "horizontal", and the docking point hardware is slightly oblong so it can be rotated to get the right, tight & secure fit that is needed. For anyone wondering: yes, I did order the right kit/part number for my FLHTK. The box (within the kit) that contained the rack is labeled "T-Pak MTG Rack, Chrome P/N: 53000221". If you find that part number (for the rack, not the kit) on H-D's web site, that part is *not* compatible with the FLHTK. I telephoned my H-D dealer but it was closed due to the pandemic (and I had already opened-up everything, sorted the parts and started the install - so I continued). But I spent well over an hour studying this, changing the order of the docking points, spacers, washers ... and I guess as they say, you just can't put a square peg into a round hole. Nothing I did got me to the point where the rack mounted onto the front docking point. So all of this leads to a question: "why" - why is the rack in this kit narrower - but more importantly why doesn't it mount on the front "docking point" hardware? Am I not getting it, doing something wrong, or just over-thinking it? Though you mounted & installed yours the same way, you didn't question this in your install demo. I probably spent 1/3 or more of my install time on the wiring: routing, rerouting, then rerouting again. I must have cut off a dozen wire ties as I tried different methods (I'm a perfectionist and I wanted to hide it as much as possible). So combine the wiring trials and my quandary re: mounting the rack on the spacers & not the docking points hardware - and you can easily see why it took me so long to complete the install. But that's okay ... I saved $416.50 from what my local H-D dealer wanted (another dealer 50-miles way wanted $440 for installation). I can now apply the savings towards my dog's surgery - a much more worthy cause - and better than giving even more money to H-D. In summary for an average guy - a non-mechanic but someone who does basic DIY jobs: do not be afraid to do this yourself. With this video demo (you'll only need H-Ds instructions to ensure you have all of the required parts), it's all fairly easy ... the detachable hardware, the license plate relocation, the antenna relocation and even the lights. I never became frustrated and I never once felt the install was beyond me or over-my-head. I frankly never lost my confidence. Believe me, this should not be a $400+ install ... Harley dealers are insane.
troyvalentinoriedel - Thank you so much for taking the time to compliment my video and recapping your experience. Very few projects have I ever undertaken that worked without any setbacks or sidesteps. Heck, I just got through flushing my clutch fluid. Who would ever thought that you would have to remove the right floor board, the right side muffler, and loosen the exhaust all the way to the head just to remove the clutch actuator cover to bleed the system. Why? Because there is not enough clearance between the exhaust and the actuator to get the cover off. It only took me 20 minutes to actually flush the fluid. But it took a couple of hours to get the cover off. I fixed that little problem for good though. I took a Dremmel tool and ground down the bottom of the cover just enough so it will clear the actuator bottom bolts the next time I need to flush the system. I would have made a video of that, but I don’t think my behavior would have been appropriate for public consumption. Ride safe!
That was an EXCELLENT video - One of the BEST I have ever seen with step by step instruction!! I now have a lot more confidence to do this install myself and will definitely have your video going to refer to while I am doing it. My bike is a 2015 FLHTK Ultra Limited and looks exactly like yours (including the color)! I would also be nice to know what you did and see how you finally tied up the new set of connected wires to prevent them from rubbing against the fender and taking the paint off?!
Thank you, Roger. The new wires are routed under the seat out either side and then use zip ties to tie them to the loops provided along the bottom of the fender bracket.
Up date - I finished the install and it went well (Like you - I had to be a little innovative with some of the wiring). Although the parts came with instructions, I am more of a "visual" person and having watched your video and being able to refer to it was extremely helpful! Thanks again for sharing!
Great video and exactly what I was looking for. Love the very methodical step by step flow of the video. Measure twice, cut once. Thanks so much for posting this! Ride safe!
one more question watching the vid again getting ready to do it, Is there a reason why you didn't go with the filler lights ?, i just bought a set of bag lights and filler lights
I was going to add before fumbled with the 'like' button - Yes, I agree, very good video - helpful. My dealer recommended the in fairing antenna as when the stock one is relocated to down below and you put the tour-pak back on, the antenna whips against the pak and marks it. Its a big and/or expensive job to put the antenna in the fairing. We found a 12” Kuryakyn Billet Antenna groved, chrome, back and chrome, black and aluminum, that sits well below the tour pak when it is back on and is USD $49.49 (more for us up here in Canada). I’m about to install it, it seems it’ll work well. p/n’s 862,863,864.
Colin Lester, thank you for your compliment. I did install an in fairing antenna and remove the whip from the bike. I started a video on that install but the video file was corrupted. The hidden antenna works well as it is powered, but I have seen instances where the signal will get partially blocked based on the terrain. But that can happen with any signal. It’s just amplified a little with the hidden antenna. Also, the adhesive 3-M tie clips are too thick for the outter fairing so I used electrical tape to hold the antenna wires in place
Hi JJ, your better than I mechanically, I'd say. I'm one of those probably fairly unusual ones who does not listen to music a lot on my bike or in the car - I find it distracting. I did want to still have access to radio though and especially the weather reports. My bike is only a few weeks old ('18 Road Glide Ultra) so I haven't put on the the 12'' antenna yet but I'm sure it will be sufficient.
Good job on the swap. Looks like you were using an old Craftsman tri-wing ratchet to do all the wrenching...first ratchet I ever bought. Nice work bench as well...couldn't ask for much better workshop lighting either. Excellent video.
I have a 13 Ultra Limited basically same set up thanks for taking the time and sharing this will be very helpful. I’m actually gonna go with the sissy bar and stealth rack for a different look and feel love the QD can switch them back-and-forth I can actually go without the rack as well so basically three options.👍👍
It came with the kit. However, Custom Dynamics has now come out with a relocation bracket and tail light kit for the touring bikes that the tag is below the light. I’ll be installing that soon. I never really liked the tag above the light as it reduces the options for installing a luggage rack in place of the tour pac. The tag sticks up to high for some of the racks.
Thank you, Jim. That bench is 3’ x 8’ and is 2 sheets of 3/4” plywood with a stainless steel cover. I put the two sheets together and took it to a metal fabricator to make the slip cover. I then used liquid nails to attached the cover permanently to the plywood. It’s been there 20+ years.
Very methodical and precise...good job. I must have missed your solution to obscuring the wires with the tour pack removed. I hope you discovered a better way of hiding them than to lay them to the side of the seat.
John, I actually figured that one out after I made the video. I found they will store well under the seat. It helps if you purchase an $18 seat finger screw. That way you don't have to worry with needing a screwdriver each time you need to get under the seat.
J J Thanks Joel. I was at the shop today talking to them about this removable tour pack hardware and a customer chimed in with an interesting comment. He said and I agreed that on the fixed tour pack bracket, connection wires accessed through the flapped slot on the pillion seat are contained keeping them from touching the fender but the detachable bracket/hardware does not have this and the wires can fall down onto the fender when tucked into the same pillion slot. Did you notice this and if so, how did you solve it? Thanks again. BTW, the $18 quick screw is a good solution saving time and potential to scratch the fender.
John, When I removed my tour pack, the wires were resting on the fender. I did notice a clip on two of the cables but the plastic push pin was connected to the clip and had never been inserted into any slot. I actually had a scuff mark that I buffed out. Then I put a couple wax layers on it to help protect it in the future. The tour pack hasn't been back on since I removed it. I'll take another look at it and get back with you the next time I put the pack back on. Thank you for your compliments and comments.
J J -did the install last night. Wasn't hard at all. However the rubber mounting tabs were a bit tricky to get right so that the tour pack wouldn't rattle. Other than that I love the look. Thanks again for the video it was really helpful. Ride safe my friend.
Great video, well described and descriptive… I have a issue regarding top mounted license plate above the tail light.. Did anyone see a mount like this on Amazon.? 45:28
I already had the docking hardware from a previous Road King so I just bought the license plate bracket part# 67900167 and was done. I already had the filler lights which I think look better and fill the holes up on the bike. I don't know why Harley doesn't include these in the kit instead of ones that stick to the bags, because when you're done you still have holes in the rear. I don't care about radio so just remove the antenna. When I want the tour pack back on I will bolt it on so I don't get wobble or loose fitting like I hear so many do especially when they buy aftermarket detachable brackets. Nonetheless, this was an awesome video, great job.
Thanks, zthang. I would agree that the Custom Dynamics LED fillers would be a nice option. I haven’t had any problems with the tour pack being loose and vibrating. The bushings can be adjusted so much so as to make it difficult to even remove the tour pack. I’ve had to adjust them a couple of times since the install. Thanks for the compliments.
J J Great Video. Just a heads up. I put the CD filler panels lights on my 18 Ultra. A bit of a pain to install and when all done they don’t look great with H-D leds. Ended up removing them and going with the H-D lights. Price is high but the look much better.
Nice instructional video, thanks. I just put the kit on my 2017 Ultra Limited. Although similar, the kit is different from the one for the RK. I struggled with the bag wiring as well but did something a little bit different. The Ultra kit I got has totally different connectors and they are identical so it's trial and error for left and right. Additionally, the module for the lights is very different, thinner with no rubber clip on, and has 4 connectors of which only 3 are used. There is no explanation of what the 4th is and I thought you might know. I suspect it's to connect the tour pack lights when attached along with the new bag lights. I followed the original instructions but had to remove the adhesive tie downs once I discovered making the connection was not possible. I installed new ones when I rerouted the wires for my installation. I also used VViViD 3M Clear Paint Protection Vinyl Film on areas I felt vibration might be an issue with regards to paint damage. There is no antenna relocation bracket for my bike so I installed a hidden one. I wish I could send you some pictures. Do you know how much the tour pack and bracket weigh?
Thanks for the compliment. Not sure what changes they may have made to the kit since I made the video. I would believe your suspicions are correct as to the wiring differences. Good call on the 3M tape. I installed a piece after I reinstalled the tour pack as the wiring scuffed the paint right behind the seat. I was able to buff it out and then installed the tape. I did weight the tour pack, and I remember it being 47lbs empty.
@@joeljasper3622 Thanks for the response. I have been getting all sorts of answers about the weight but around 50 pounds is what it felt like to me. I tie wrapped all the cables securely to the frame under the seat so the rear fender is not exposed to any vibrating connectors or wires. All that will need to be undone when the tour pack is installed and I need to make the necessary connections. Then I will decide whether to use the 3M tape or build a shelf like others have described to support the cables. I do miss the speakers in the tour pack and am thinking about getting speaker tops for the bags. Any tips for that?
Just curious as to why the front "bushing" is even needed if the bracket just slides over the smooth, chrome piece? I plan on buying one and I appreciate your video.
The installation went excellent. Only piece missing was the wiring to the LED saddlebag lights. You never showed how you attached the wiring in the Saddlebags
Very informative Joe Thanks. I just purchased the detachable kit from harley and planning on installing on my 14 ultra limited. I do have a question on the lighting when putting the tour pack back on the bike. Is it possible to have the lights on tour pack and saddle bag lights working together? Thanks again!
Looks like your tour pack is going to look higher in the front than the back , I think I would rather have a level looking tour pack than a slanted one. I would try to figure out how to make it level.
thank you for the reply, got my kit and installed it with help from your video, lock-tight was a great tip, by the way, the bushings on the mounting hardware can those be replaced with a better brand of bushings with more quality? by the way is there a wiring harness adapter that relocates the tour pack wiring connections under the seat? so when the tour pack comes off the long wire harness stays attached to the tour pack and there is less to hide under the seat? thanks
I’m glad the video was a help to you. I’m not aware of a harness that does that. You would have to just about have to rewire the bike though as some of that harness comes all the way from the front fairing. I’m not aware of any other bushings either. You will have to adjust those bushings from time to time.
Sounds like you got that tag bracket in the kit I’m having a hard time finding the one that sandwichs between the tail light and fender do you have any idea part number I know it’s been a while.👍
I’ve since gone to a Custom Dynamics LED tail light and tag bracket where the tag is below the tail light. I don’t have a part number for just the tag bracket that came with the kit.
If you could, shoot a quick video showing how you set up the wiring to the bags for the brake lights and how you routed the wires. I started mine this evening but ran into a problem getting the back license plate bracket and brake light housing to line up so I could screw it in. I’ll try again in the morning.
Take a look at the Mo-door garage door opener video and fast forward to 4:40 and see if that helps. That license plate relocation bracket can be a little troublesome. Don’t be afraid to mold it a little for a better fit. Just mold it a little at a time.
good job on this video. JJ , the only concern I have is in regards to the wiring that comes up th backside of the bags. Is there any areas that will rub the paint surfaces?
Thank you, Douglas. Unfortunately, the plugs are going to rub on the inside of the bag. Of course, it will only be seen when the bags are removed and even then, I always lay them on the side the wires are mounted. So, it doesn’t concern me that much. One option is to order the 3M clear film and place a piece on each bag at that location. I just recently placed a piece on my rear fender where the plugs rest for the tour pack when it is mounted. I ordered a roll on Amazon.
Nicely done bro....a little time consuming, but well woth the investment of the extra time!! Taking delivery of my new Ultra Limited next week and have been thinking about doin' this mod.....
Great video, installation went well. Dang, license plate relocation kit rattles. I saw that you were not pleased with the kit either. Did you go a different route? Thanks
Joel, ever any updates to your project? I watched your video several times before attempting to make my 16 FLTRU tour pack detachable. That license plate bracket was not my fav. I ended up piecing together HD parts from ebay and the new brake/ plate relocator from Custom Dynamics. It looks great even though I think it ending up costing more than the HD kit. ha!
I didn’t like the tag relocation bracket that came with the kit either. I wound up replacing the tail light and bracket with the Custom Dynamics LED tail light and the plate is below the tail light now. Looks much better.
Maybe this is not the brightest question, but why not install the lights with the lids closed and locked? That way you should have the lid itself as a mark to get it straight by?
Great question. However, if you look closely when latching the lid, you will see that they pull down past perpendicular to the saddle bag. Depending on the adjustment, the two lids might be slightly different as well.
Great video . Very Helpful however I have a problem with my install on my 2015 CVO Road Glide Ultra. My lights don't work right. They light up , the turn signals work but no brake lights on the saddle bag lights. I'm still searching the web looking for a guru on the subject but no luck. Thanks again for the awesome video. It sure made it a "piece of cake" project (other than my light problem).
I have the same bike getting ready to do the same thing i'm sure by now found out what the problem was please share results were and how much was total price for parts thank you!!
hi, i just check out your video for the tour pack removal kit, and tail light replacements great video, can you give some links or places you found the kit and all the items needed to make it work? and a total rough cost ? thanks
The kit can be found online at Harley Davidson or from their catalog. Because the kit numbers change based off year model and finish, there are several numbers.
What did you wind up putting on your old antenna mount on the tour pack? I'm left with the old stud. I suppose I could put a short antenna there. Just curious what you did. Thank you
Roman Otto, I’m not sure as I have not had a reason to dismantle the tour-pak itself. But, I’m fairly confident it would not be that difficult. Thanks for the compliment.
If you're still around, I found this six years later and am going to do the same to my 2016 FLTRU Road Glide Ultra. Excellent video. The only thing I would like to do differently is a different taillight / license plate to have the license plate under the light. Thanks for showing all the details.
Thanks. Custom Dynamics has one. I replaced mine several years ago.
This is an EXCELLENT how to video. I've probably spent the better part of an hour searching an install "how to video". Others I've watched lacked a lot of clarity. You should teach class on making " How To Videos"!! Once again a great, great video. Thanks a million.
This is what I need then
Your BIKE looks freakin' SWEET without that big ass'd bag on the BACK!
Thanks my friend. I never read one word of their instructions. Installed mine today just by watching your video.
Well done sir. 👏
The BEST How-To video I have ever watched! I literally sat down with my iPad in my garage with the exact same parts and installed everything as demonstrated in this great video! Took me 2.5 cans of Diet Pepsi from start to finish. :) Thank you 'Sir!
LOL 😂
Thank you so much for posting this video. With your help, I just finished installing this kit on my 2014 Ultra Ltd. I brought a laptop with me into the garage and referred back to your video every step of the way. Well done!
Thanks so much Joel for taking the time to share this install! Very informative and detailed. The last time I did this, Harley Davidson charged me $500 in Labor. Not this time!
Hey Joel, I followed your install video. Completed job without a hitch and in a timely manner. Just wanted to give shout out to you.
Thanks!
Thanks for the video I went to HD dealer today and they want to change for 6 hrs after watching your video I will try my self ..job well done 👍
I'd like to say, this man did an OUTSTANDING JOB in covering every point of the process and adding his personal views as to what should be done. Thoroughly went step by step. Super job man!! Thank you....big help!
Aaron Cross, thank you so much for taking the time to write the compliments. That was very kind of you Sir.
THANKS!!
Thank you, Allen. Glad I could inspire you to go for a third install. Safe riding!
GREAT detailed video of showing the process of installing the Tour-Pak conversion kit, thank you!
Did you get the kit from Harley? I am considering to do it to my 2019
@@Janoscsonka I did and everything worked great
@@toddferrell518 does the blinker on the dash blink fast?
No the blinker on the dash blinks normal
@@toddferrell518 weird my engine light is on and the blinker on the dash goes fast hmm we’ll take er in to the dealer for a an oil change get it straightend out thanks.
Thanks so much for your detailed video. Excellent job. I just completed the install on my 2017 Limited Low, following your video the entire way. If our paths ever cross, drinks will be on me. Cable management is a bit of challenge. Next, gotta build a shelf to store the tour pack.
Thank you, Rob. Glad it was a help. I guess you saw the video of the cart I made for my tour pack?
J J yes, I did see that cart video, and plan to build one just like it. Great job and thanks again.
Outstanding video, great and precise details! You did a phenomenal job. So much so, that someone with little to no experience could perform this job. That’s the true test and you accomplished it with flying colors! Thanks! God bless.
Thank you for the compliment, JC Galiano. Merry Christmas and God bless you and yours! Ride safe.
Ride Safe!!

Used your video to install on my 21 ultra today. Great tutorial exponentially better than the printed instructions keep up the great work.
Joel excellent video. I am an accountant by trade, and not very mechanical. I followed along with you while I installed the hardware on my 2017 CVO Road Glide Ultra. Worked like a charm. Thanks for doing this video. It helped me quite a bit. Ride Safe my friend. SFM
Thank you Steve. Glad I was able to help. Safe riding to you as well!
Thank you Sir.
Glad I could save you some $.
It adds an additional 7 pin socket to the bike.
mstore.harley-davidson.com/store/boom%21-audio-music---comm-kit
Remove the outer (front fairing) to expose the back of the head unit.
Thanks, HappyJack. I was just checking out some of your videos. Safe riding friend.
JJ thank you so much. I've just purchased a 2017 FLHTK Police and wanted to be able to take off the tour pak and use a sissy bar. Your video made it an easy job. Thanks again.
John, thank you. I'm glad the video was of assistance.
Thank you, Toc Sin. Let me know how it turns out.
Excellent instructions Joel I followed along & completed my 21 ultra install Saturday-thank you!
Great video, I just got my first Harley and I am wanting to be able to take the box off back when I ride solo. I didn’t buy new one but it is new to me. Thanks for the very detailed video….
Finally, a straight shot video on doing this. Was getting frustrated. Couldn't find anything on the details. Saving this for when I get my RG Ltd.
Been thinking about doing this ever since I got my RG Limited and felt it's top heavy. Doesn't look that hard to do. Since watching you I'm ready to go for it. One thing I may do differently, hide the antenna under the fairing. Thanks for taking time to show us how the average guy can do it.
Thanks. I installed the hidden antenna sometime after I did this video.
This was a great video. I watched it several times before I installed it on my bike. I panicked when the attachment points in the front of the bracket were too wide. Upon reviewing the video I saw you had the same issue. Great job. Thank you very much.
My wife got me the kit for Christmas. Thanks for the great video! I can't wait to install mine next spring.
Simply an awesome tutorial video. QUALITY IS WORTHY TO BE SOLD ON THE INTERNET. Well done Sir.
Thank you, Sir!
Thanks for letting me know. I replaced my external antenna with a hidden one under the fairing.
That is what I chose as well. FM seems to work well. AM I find not as good
Dealing with that now lol!
Great video ! Helped me get past some of the humps of self-installing this kit. Thanks for taking the time !
Thanks Joel your great How To video! It was a breeze following your detailed instructions.
I do not own a Harley... but... I really appreciated your hard work and great presentation. Thanks... ps.. hi from TX (2002 BMW R1150R)
Awesome video! Best one I've found on this. Going to save me hundreds in costs at the dealer
Very informative video! I just purchased an Ultra Limited Low and would like to shed the extra weight of the tour pack when not touring. So, once I save up a few bucks, I fully intend to installed the kit. I will view your video many more times before I begin. I prefer doing my own work on my bike and saving on the cost for Harley service to do. thanks!!!
Thank you. Glad I could help.
Excellent video! The thoroughness saved me a great deal of time.
Awesome Job.
I just installed mine today, couldn't have done it without your help( video).
Thank you
all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. Been looking for a good demo for 2 days! I'm sure not paying HD $500 when I can do this myself.
Brett F. You are most welcome. Glad the video is of help to you.
@@joeljasper3622 Got it, and I remember seeing you do that in the video. Thanks again and happy/safe riding!
Up date - I finished the install and it went well (Like you - I had to be a little innovative with some of the wiring). Although the parts came with instructions, I am more of a "visual" person and having watched your video and being able to refer to it was extremely helpful! Thanks again for sharing!
Thanks JJ - did my conversion today, and your video certainly helped make the job a whole lot clearer, easier to plan and complete.
Glad this video provided some help. How long did it take you?
Great video and exactly what I was looking for. Love the very methodical step by step flow of the video. Measure twice, cut once. Thanks so much for posting this! Ride safe!
Thank you Daryl. Safe riding to you as well.
one more question watching the vid again getting ready to do it, Is there a reason why you didn't go with the filler lights ?, i just bought a set of bag lights and filler lights
No reason. Will probably do so at some time.
Great video !! You answered a lot of questions I was having about this
I have a 13 Ultra Limited basically same set up thanks for taking the time and sharing this will be very helpful. I’m actually gonna go with the sissy bar and stealth rack for a different look and feel love the QD can switch them back-and-forth I can actually go without the rack as well so basically three options.👍👍
Great video, thanks. Where did you get the license plate mount? I have not seen that one anywhere.
Video - Well done. I like your style - slow, methodical, and thorough. Also I wish I had a work bench like yours. :)
Thank you, John. Glad I could inspire you go for a third install. Safe riding!
J J you can get a protective strip from Harley or just buy some clear 3m and cut it to fit yourself

Thanks for sharing. Installing this on my 2014 Ultra Limited this weekend. It was nice to watch a video beforehand!
Thank you Sir. I hope it helps when you get ready to do your install.
J J -did the install last night. Wasn't hard at all. However the rubber mounting tabs were a bit tricky to get right so that the tour pack wouldn't rattle. Other than that I love the look. Thanks again for the video it was really helpful. Ride safe my friend.

Thank you, Brother. Ride safe and Merry Christmas.
Great video Joel. Thank you for making it. It is a huge help!
Great video, well described and descriptive… I have a issue regarding top mounted license plate above the tail light.. Did anyone see a mount like this on Amazon.? 45:28
I would like to purchase that exact license plate mount… Anyone have a part number or description?
Price is high but the look much better.
i like this video, very instructive as to removing and mounting the tourpak
@@aaronkrongard6239 I intend to have a audio pro upgrade the speakers and add an amp. I store the wires under the seat when the pack is off.
Just curious as to why the front "bushing" is even needed if the bracket just slides over the smooth, chrome piece?
I plan on buying one and I appreciate your video.
One post is for a sissy bar or back rest when not using the tour pak and the other is the the luggage rack/tour pak.
Thank you, great video!
Watching from Brazil.
My 53000291A kit just arrived today. This will help a lot... Great Video Thanks
Thank you Sir.
How did installing your kit go?
The installation went excellent. Only piece missing was the wiring to the LED saddlebag lights. You never showed how you attached the wiring in the Saddlebags
37:31 you never showed what it looked like completed
When the lights are hooked up to saddlebag how easily is the led's disconnected so you can remove the saddlebag?
Good job! Thank you from Brazil. I will try install right now!
Harley instructions were weak. Appreciate your in-depth instruction 👍🏻
Very informative Joe Thanks. I just purchased the detachable kit from harley and planning on installing on my 14 ultra limited. I do have a question on the lighting when putting the tour pack back on the bike. Is it possible to have the lights on tour pack and saddle bag lights working together? Thanks again!
Yes, both will work.
Excellent video! Thanks for showing all the steps. Very helpful. Did you ever weigh the tour pack to see how much weight came off?
Thank you. I did. Empty weight was 40 lbs.
Great video. I'm about to get the kit, and your video covered all the questions I had.
Excellent Work, and video! Still planning my purchase, but this really helps my decision.
You need to start your own business sir very well done!!
Great, in depth video. Well explained and thorough. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing this video it was very helpful I installed mine today.
It is a great video but the only thing I would say is don't use red locktite if you EVER think about removing that brackett
Great video, installation went well. Dang, license plate relocation kit rattles. I saw that you were not pleased with the kit either. Did you go a different route? Thanks
Great job! Very detailed and good information. Thank you for sharing.
Steve Nezat, I appreciate the compliments. Did the lights test correctly before you mounted them to the bags?
Thank you
A black valve stem cap.
Hello Joe, thanks for the video, it looks good. I also want to buy an HD Limidet and wondered how hard it is to dismantle the Tour-Pak.
Roman Otto, I’m not sure as I have not had a reason to dismantle the tour-pak itself. But, I’m fairly confident it would not be that difficult. Thanks for the compliment.
