How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RUclips channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

I liked the ATV warning message. I started a 1956 Farmall when I wasn't on it and found out the hard way it was in gear. My right ankle now has a plate and 7 screws!

A small light trailer with high sides behind the quad would make your life a lot easier, put the in the calf inside and you don't have try to hold or corral them all the time you are working them 🙂

You need a calf catching stick and a calf carrier that will go into the receiving hitch on your gator we use gators all the time because of the box space to carry supplies

My experience with dairy cows is that the mother would follow you about halfway to the barn and then turn around and run back to the spot where she had the calf. 😆

If a cow gets a shock and is stnading on the ground, isn't that a ground fault?! is the fence ac or dc? if ac yes you have a fault.

I’m super proud of you getting another bull and not one from the sale barn. Those freeze brands are a good sign he’s got some solid genetics and that matters when you’re trying to improve your herd. Above all else the bull is the most important part of a cow calf operation, you can’t settle for mediocre bulls. It’s called subcutaneous when you give a shot under the skin and not in the muscle. I am however worried for your well being trying to grab a calf with the dogs running around.

I enjoy your and your brothers videos. Been watching for quite a few years now.
I have wo questions about your cattle breeding.
On my farm I sort my cows and heifers into different pastures when it is time to meet the bull.
This is so the cows/heifers are not mating with their fathers or if possible grandfathers.
I know you can do this but interbreeding is not recommended.
I have not seen you or your brother do this. Maybe you do as I am sure you do not show us everything.
Would love to know if you do this or just let all the bulls out into the herd and see what happens.
The other question is if you plan to sell what we call registered Angus bull and heifer calves, do you not need to know who the sire is?
Please ignore this if I am wrong in my thinking.

Hi Ryan. I for on my son’s butt for nor having a phone with him when he’s out on foot with the cows. Consider having one on your person when you do it alone. It won’t keep you from getting hurt but it can keep from getting dead. Wouldn’t want to hear about that happening to you and yours. You’re a good honest guy or I wouldn’t have replied with this.. Thanks
