FlyWire is about exploring flight and the freedom this incredible experience brings us on a personal level. Flying has always captured the imagination and excitement of living life to its fullest. Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. Now with FlyWire I want to showcase the fun in flying, share the joy and freedom of flight and explore the world with you. Make sure you subscribe if you want to go along for the ride!

300 level classes were always where I started to pay attention in college. If I’m interested in something I’ve already self-taught the 100 and 200. Ok, maybe I tripped up a little on the spring semester 200 stuff, but 100s were skip/sleeps for me.
Those were the days. Now I can’t find my car keys…

Have watched a few WWII Fighter combat footage with audio in a few of the video's. Now the audio was recorded separately, but in intense dog fights, it was chaotic with the pilots yelling and hollering to "check your SIX, you got a bandit on your six" and so on. It clearly illustrated the point your making about the futility of radio chatter!

The overall theme of flying for the movies seems to be "It looks cool". Unfortunately, too many times in real life, "It looks cool" is the Navy culture for fighter pilots that has resulted in many accidents over the years. The recent loss of an F-35 crashing into the fantail of the USS Carl Vincent is a classic example of this. The pilot was hot rodding in the pattern and never had a proper approach speed. The Navy accident report called a low approach at 350kts with two 7G pattern turns to final "normal". Classic Navy culture.

So, this is interesting... mankind has certainly made tremendous progress in aviation. Warplanes constructed with a combination of miraculous alloys and sophisticated composites and powered by the most incredible jet engines... there's just no end to the marvels. But wait, let's stuff them full of electronics which were practically inconceivable just a century ago -- radar, gps, lasers, all coordinated and run by COMPUTERS! What more is there possibly left to do? Oh yes, the weapons, all of them stuffed full with MINIATURE electronics, and some of those weapons powered by ROCKETS! It boggles the mind, especially when I consider that my own grandparents got around on horses. Oh sure, sometimes the Iron Horse but always horses.
So, it befuddles me how radios in aviation have so cleverly managed to evade progress to this day. If the heavens could send us another Marconi aviation will have reached its pinnacle. Let us all pray.😅

Thank you, answered some questions that I had. Great information. By the way, it seems that when you give anyone a two way radio, you can’t get them to shut up. They talk non-stop and say nothing.

    G'day Scott,
Ah, well, actually I haven't seen the new TopGun movie..., and a Pitts S-2a was the closest to a Fighter that I ever flew ; so I only have an almost entirely imaginary grasp on this stuff - despite having devoted 6 decades to pondering, and fantasising around, the concept per-se.
So I guess I'm equipped to enjoy this, immensely ; but it's all purely "academic", to me.
Good stuff to watch on a rainy day..., which is my current situation.
According to what I've gleaned over the years...,
Close formation in Fighter Combat was indeed a thing..., once upon a time back before Radio, when the Flight-Leader's Hand-Signals were ALL there was...; and so, thus it was that Howard Hughes portrayed it - in all his WW-1 Air-War Movies...., and it worked really well too, to get lots of Airframes into the same Camera-Frame...
The Germans opened up their Tactical Formations, and changed to Pairs instead of Threesomes, while fighting in Spain in 1936 ; the Brit's lost a lot of Fighters in France and Southeast England in 1940 by flying closely packed in "Vics" of 3, with all the Vics packed in together like bunches of Bananas..., so as to be able deliver "Fighting Area Attacks" against imaginary Bomber Formations which were Officially assumed to be unescorted, and flying on unwavering Courses at unvarying Speeds....
So by 1942, nobody on Earth was actually flying Fighters in close formation, in Combat...; except for the Moviemakers, in every Country on Earth...
So, it kind of boils down to the original Top Gun movie being a Recruiting Film subsidised and sponsored by the Military with free access to Bases, Boats, Aircraft and Flight-Time, and a simple Romance/Adventure Plot to all hold it together - all marinated in a hypertonic solution of Nationalism, Jingoism, Patriotism, and US Exceptionalism...
And it worked, it was a Box Office success, and a lot of the people who grew up to fly over Iraq and Afghanistan and Iraqagain and Libya and Syria and Absurdistandstill..., all watched Top Gun again and again and again as kids and teenagers - sort of the way I read Biggles and watched 12 O'clock High, The Blue Max, Zeppelin, Tora Tora Tora, and The Battle of Britain when I was a kid.
Now it's 2022, and Hollywood is deeply into the SeeBackroscopic View of Life. They cannot think of anything actually new to say, or do - so they're aiming at the Nostalgia Market by trying to (endlessly ?) remake every old Movie which ever worked well.
    Therefore, thus, and because,
    TopGunAg'in....!
Repeating the same-old same-old recipe with extra Sugar, more Salt, added MSG...; all trying to squeeze dollars from the shrinking EcoGnomie - while ignoring the Greenhouse Gas Emissions attendant on operating, using, or practising ANYTHING which the Military uses which burns Fossil Fuel.
As if Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics gives a Free-Pass to Military Equipment...
Which does not in fact occurr.
And given the timeline - nobody watching TopGunAg'in as a High Schooler is going to be flying anything, for practice or in Combat - because the Fuel will be too expensive to burn, or it will have become entirely Unobtainium, by 2030 or so.
So it might be great Entertainment, but I can't see it functioning as a Recruiting Multiplier - not in the way the original did...
I enjoyed your explanations though..., well done !
    Keep on keeping on...
    Stay safe.
    ;-p
    Ciao !

Great video, thank you Scott. With regards to comm brevity, what is the call to tell the flight/wing to increase/decrease speed or climb/descend if you did tacform with comms?

Buster is Military Power. ‘Push it Up’ is an admin call, just do it in increments so the wing can keep pace.

Scott, doesn’t the FBW system on the F/A-18 keep you from exceeding the airframe G limit ?

Would you ever go flying in formation with dissimilar jets? Like an F4F and a F14, 15 or ??? How would that work? (Edited for spelling)

  • @petrairene
    @petrairene Год назад

Interesting what you say about over-g-ing your jet. I have read that the fly by wire sytems of modern fighter jets have an inbuilt function that no matter how hard you pull on the stick, the plane will never give you more than, in the case of the Eurofighter, the maximum of 9 g. The plane could handle more, but the pilots can't. So here the problem is not the over-g of the plane but the over-g of the pilots, so to speak so the limits of the plane exceeds the limits of the pilots.

The F-16 is completely Fly-by-wire and Hal gets the Vote. In the F-15E it's totally up to the pilot.
