Matthew Macfayden is amazing in this show. He absolutely captures a character I’ve seen in corporations: smug yet insecure, middle-class pretending to be upper-class, suburban/rural guy who thinks he’s so sophisticated and urbane. It’s like seeing real life.

The brilliance of this scene is in the subtext. Tom's reaction is based on the "arrangement" with Shiv, which he really hates, but cannot express. So this rejection, especially when Greg unfortunately frases "... like an open business relationship", triggers all those emotions that Tom had and cannot express properly in that other part of he's life. Brilliant writing and performance.

Mine was that Greg is probably the only character Tom feels he has supremacy over(true or not, taht is a different matter), and when Greg decided to leave or ‘break up with him’ Tom was upset as the only other person that wasn’t constantly fucking him was now, by that meaning, fucking him.
My guess is Greg is the only one from the “ family “ that Tom has any dominance over.. so he doesn’t wanna let Greg go otherwise Tom will be on the bottom of the chain..
I realized that because of how Shiv wanted things "open" in their relationship, and then Greg trying to do the same thing in their "relationship"... even using the word "open" that set him off in so many ways. Every avenue of his life he's being told he's not enough or there's someone better, That's just my opinion. Funny scenes and great actors.

True, but if you have ever tried to open a really cheap water bottle, this is what it is like. The bottle collapses before the cap unscrews. Still shows the difference between rich and poor though, they don’t have to deal with the cheap bottles in their board rooms, it’s for the plebs.

I love when writers think that audience is intelligent enough to read between the lines. They didn't need to explain that this is a projection of Tom's insecurity with Shiv, in other shows they would probably be more explicit with the intention but that's what makes me love Succession.

Obvious subtext aside it’s really fascinating how intentionally and explicitly the writers keep weaving this pattern. Tom is forced to be painfully passive in his marriage and his dealings with the family, so he takes it out almost exactly by being aggressive with Greg or anyone unfortunate enough to be his (perceived) inferior. Textbook definition of hurt people hurting people, plus it’s written so blatantly and awkwardly that it feels totally realistic
