You guys are becoming American Samoa’s most famous citizens. I think you should use your real last name......I would open a pastry shop with you guys if I lived in American Samoa.
They are. We’ve encouraged them to be open to trying new things from the beginning. Food is such an easy way to experience different cultures and ways of life. Plus, it helps that we are willing to try these new things too. It’s just always been a thing we do as a family.
I can't believe how much the market has changed . My mom used to run a little breakfast shop out there before the market underwent renovations. As another person commented, the market was really packed Friday nights into Saturday mornings and all day Saturday. Wow, thank you for sharing this wonderful stroll down memory lane. Love your videos especially when your children are along side living the experiences with you! I was fortunate enough to grow up in Europe before returning to American Samoa and I loved every minute of it, I am sure your children will carry these experiences with them and cherish them always! Please keep the videos coming! Take care and Soifua.
Sounds like you’ve had some awesome adventures yourself! Our greatest hope is that our children will take what they’ve learned here and be better for it.
@@AmSamFam for sure!! As a child growing up over seas, I never thought it would have such a profound effect on me, but it has and to this day, I still look back on those days with fondness. Friday afternoon with high schoolers (Fa’asao, Marist, Samoana, eastside kids and even some west side kids would risk trouble with their families just to aiga bus themselves back home), would all hung out at the market and IceWich, (our McDonald before McDonald discover American Samoa). There must be tons of coconut and papaya that you could forage or trade your neighbors for. Is there? Do you share fish and foraged greens with your neighbors? Do you have a garden? Those little girls sure liked getting out.
We do actually have coconuts in our back yard, but sometimes when you’re out and there’s a fresh, husked coconut it worth the splurge 😊 We live right on the ocean, which makes it difficult to grow much, but there are lots of little produce stands all over the island, where you can get fresh fruits and veggies. Wow...3$ for a coconut, wow. On the way back to Fagasa from school, Samoana...after missing the second bus we’d climb coconut trees near the wharf, husk, then sell them to the tourists on the cruise ship for fare back home. Quarter a piece. Course that was back in the late 70s. No cruise ship...then it was slipper rubber express. Lol. And the market has changed so much. Thanks for the vid.
