    My personal 10 Things To Buy If I'm Living in American Samoa:
    (Based on when I lived there from 1993-1999)
    1) Mosquito Coils
    (Especially if your home has luvars with no actually screen)
    2) 5 pairs of sandals
    (People mistakenly, or not, take them all the time so it's great to have backup. This happens because when you enter a home you have to leave your sandals at the door)
    3) Sunblock
    4) Water filter
    (or have one installed in your home, I spent so many years there with tummy aches because I lived like the locals drinking out of any faucet including those meant for hoses and the water wasn't filtered so good)
    5) My own personal list of food
    (Almost every local eats the same food which are high in saturated fat and cholesterol. I realized I ate whatever everyone else ate there those years because I was just a teen who didn't work and had to eat whatever everyone else ate and it wasn't very healthy especially because we tend to eat in very large portions)
    6) A baton
    (Just to deal with dogs when you're jogging, you can just swing at them if they're close to biting you. I know you might not like this dog lovers but these are Samoan dogs we're talking about, they don't care about your feelings))
    7) Water Heater
    (This was probably one of the biggest luxuries I longed for when we moved from the Bay Area to Tutuila, felt so good when I got back to the mainland lol)
    8) Antacid
    9) Bible
    (Just to give you some comfort at night. Samoan nights can be spooky especially when you're out instead of being home. There's no such thing as a central cemetary, we bury our dead loved ones on our property usually right next to our home. My uncle was buried in the patio of his own home, so for those not accustomed to our way of life there this can be kind of spooky)
    10) Lanterns and candles
    (We had way more power outages in those years than most of my life in the U.S.)

    How much does it cost to have cell service and data in American Samoa, not like a temporary thing, but for someone living there? Are any mainland American cell carriers available there?

    • @AmSamFam
      @AmSamFam  4 года назад +3

      Very few people have a mobile “plan” here. It’s mostly prepaid. You add funds to your sim through a mobile app or at an authorized store, and then you buy a data bundle. $35 will get you 12GB of data, good for 15 days. There are cheaper bundles with different amounts of data and expirations, too. Then, calls and texts are 5 cents/minute/text, but you can buy bundles for that, too. If you were always buying the most expensive bundle, it would probably be more expensive that a typical US plan, but most people don’t do that and end up spending a lot less than a typical US mobile plan.

      @@AmSamFam Thank you, that's very helpful! I'm strongly considering moving to American Samoa for a few months, maybe a year, and it's hard to find information on it. My LDS father spent a few weeks in Hawaii. Like other Pacific islanders, many of the Hawaiians wore the skirts, but instead of beads, they wore leis. I don't know if y'all are LDS, this might not mean anything to y'all, but in the states, you need to wear a tie to pass the sacrament. In Hawaii they treat the lei like a tie. To my understanding, the LDS in Hawaii dress differently than most other Hawaiian churches. I suspect LDS churches in American Samoa would also treat beads like ties. Just speculation on my part.
    Also, thanks for recommending the sweets, as someone who was raised LDS, sugar is still my only vice XD, I'm going to go check out you Cheat Day video now

    • @AmSamFam
      @AmSamFam  4 года назад

      We are LDS. While it’s not uncommon to see beads instead of a tie, I believe that a standard white shirt and tie are required for things like passing the sacrament. A lava lava is totally fine, though.
