I also love R a lot, some fun facts: In Vol.1 Ito tells us that the story was something they couldn't add in the og manga (why was that we don't know but maybe something like what happened with Millenium World and having to scrap the plot of Seto and Kisara, maybe they didn't have all the ideas laid out at the time and had to release something), but the story was Takahashi's idea, in fact R came out barely a month after the og manga ended (last chapter was released March 8, 2004 while R1 was released April 21, 2004), it was like if Yugioh never finished just changed to become a monthly manga Pegasus nickname in the game was Taiyo Tenma, so it likely is a reference, also if i remember correctly Anzu was never in the school to begin with, she was a hologram the entire time, Yako legit kidnapped her and waited to have his dramatic revelation to see Yugi's reaction and then he properly started project R.A. he was a true hater Some other details, the special chapter has some interesting retrospective continuty, remember that Yugi didn't want his grandpa to display the Gods in the store? well guess what the special chapter is all about, that special chapter would be the perfect intermediate episode to transition from BC to R in an adaptation (since it does take place before R's story) About expanding continuity, the god's hierarchy wasn't introduced here, but R is where the thing is actually explained, it's very funny to see. Also since not all the duels were shown we never got to see one of the card proffessors deck which is called "High-Tech Marionette" and we see a in an illustration one of his monsters and it looks so cool, i'll forever be salty about this Edit: For those wondering, R's first chapter was released the same day as chapter 3 of the anime millenium world arc, that's why it was never adapted, because by the time it began the tiny room it had to possibly be adapted was already closed

@alonsoarana5307 the grand Prix is actually one of the main reasons I don't remember the final Yu-Gi-Oh arc as good, I was so bored by it I started to feel like my interest in Yu-Gi-Oh was slowly fading away
If Deckmasters was something the game adapted it was ok. But all 3 anime only Arcs could be skipped and nothing would really loose anything. (Fun Fact: Digimon TCG has a card type similar to Deckmaster being Ace Digimon)
R released at the time of GX. Also it relies on Pegasus and Keith being dead, which doesn't happen in the anime. Virtual World is my favourite original Yu-Gi-Oh arc outside season 0, while Battle City Finals is my least favourite arc in general, so I'm glad the anime has peak in the middle of mediocrity.
Omg dyl as a Vanguard and Yugioh fan this was something I've been waiting for this was made by cardfight vanguards creator Akira Ito with Takahashi doing the story it was so good this felt like such a canon story it fits right in there after battle city. Everything about this was 🔥 the story the duels and the connection to dm despite this being a spinoff.
Wow five episodes already! I’m so glad to have watched this series and it’s so much fun. I like hearing both of your thoughts on Yugioh stuff and I’m enjoying this series so much. Anyways I love Yugioh R and I just finished rereading the manga not too long ago. I really liked the concept of the Wicked Gods and they were kinda cool. I was surprised that Yako Tenma had been adopted by Pegasus and my jaws dropped when I read that part of the manga. Looking forward to the future episodes of this series.
Gonna watch a bit later but this is one of my favorite types of videos to watch on the channel cant wait! Always love a collab big up Dylan and Rarity ❤
Honestly, totally agree!!! It’s got way more reason to exist than Capsule Monsters, I can say that much (since that’s basically just the Virtual World Arc again, but with even less of a point). Though Yu-Gi-Oh! R certainly seems exciting.
An R adaptation would've fit so nicely in between the Battle City Finals and Waking the Dragons. Switch Project RA's subject from Pegasus to Cynthia, give Pegasus a supporting role AGAINST his adoptive children, and you lay the groundwork for Pegasus' friendlier dynamic with Yugi and the Gang in Pyramid of Light, Bonds Beyond Time and Waking the Dragons. There could've even been a happy ending where somehow, Cynthia did come back. Maybe some Millennium Item shenanigans.
Yu-gi-oh R was Akira Ito's first work as Head artist before he created Cardfight Vanguard. I only see Yu-gi-oh R adapting if we got an anime series following the manga more closely like Cardfight Vanguard V did
I believe (I only did cursory research at some point, I haven’t read the manga) this manga introduced a disabled duelist with a unique duel disk attached to the wheelchair. That is really cool

Very cool video, I've heard of Yu-Gi-Oh R, but never actually read it, so this was a cool, deep dive into this manga! Shame we got the Kaiba Corp Grand Prix arc in the anime instead of this. It would have been interesting to see how the show would have adapted it, especially given that Pegasus didn't die in the anime!
As a Joey fan, one who wants to see little Yugi duel more, & someone who was into Vanguard(Not anymore, i think it gets too tricky due to its new gimmick IMO 🥲), this spin-off is 1 of the coolest. I love the fact that Joey borrow 1 of the Professor's duel disk, beat 1 of the Professor with black duel disk, use the black duel disk, gives the black duel disk to 1 he borrows early at the end of the manga XD Imagine Joey use that duel disk & Kaiba goes "That doesn't suits you at all" 🤣
5:43 Hmm...kidnaps the 'lead girl' in an unsuccessful bid to resurrect someone with a weird tech mash-up, reducing her to an object to save...something so _familiar_ about that...
I enjoyed the manga and I thought it was an interesting follow up to battle city in the manga (of course the anime changed it so Pegasus didn’t die so it would have to be like Dark side of Dimension-explicitly “following the manga storyline”) (as without Pegasus being dead the premise of the manga falls apart)
I wish it got animated into the next season of DM as well, however I can see why it wasn’t. A lot of the duels weren’t animated and another villain who hates Kaiba would’ve been repetitive, especially considering how much of the filler seasons stemmed from the same premise. The set up for the next arc was perfect. Throughout the whole Yugioh series Atem had been in the story for so long and the ride had to come to an end. The character arcs of all the other side characters already concluded. All that was left was for Atem to resolve his own arc. It was the perfect time to further the discovery. In the end of battle city, the idea is the mystery of seeing if kaiba can and will be a new man if he ever reappears and the idea of him changing himself said a lot for his character. By having Kaiba return immediately kinda invalidated the ending and theme of battle city It also would’ve messed up the momentum of Bakuras plan in the millennium word arc. But hey with the voice actors still around and Takahashi not officially writing this story and the of the estate aren’t jerks about it, maybe this can be adapted in the future.
As an idea for having "R" in the anime. What if Pegasus was in a coma because Yami Bakura trapped his soul in a card just like Pegasus had done to Grandpa and Mokuba? Tenma, knowing about the Millennium items because of Pegasus, believes Yugi had did it and wants to use the puzzle in order to save Pegasus. Meanwhile, Bandit Keith was heavily injured after his warehouse duel with Yugi and is only being kept alive by Tenma's technology.
I actually made a point during my Reshef playthrough that if the game went down the path of Yu-Gi-Oh! R instead of the story they did (which still cool), it would've been a lot more successful and a lot more interesting and get introduced to more characters. But I think that would of required hindsight and I guess it was more to capitalise off of Yu-Gi-Oh! Success in the early 2000s.
Dylan, can you produce a video, in which you mention ten wish-duels for the original Yugioh? You have already done it for GX and 5'ds. I can tell you some of me: 1)Yugi/Atem vs Siegfried von Schröder 2)Kaiba vs Yami Marik 3)Kaiba vs Leon von Schröder 4)Kaiba vs Rafael 5)Leon von Schröder vs Siegfried von Schröder
I plan to use some of the r characters in my next cpu vs cpu tournaments. Mendo , kirk, klamath, and a few others are looking for bandit keith who is in the monster world.
This is literally one of my favorite mangas/arc of yugioh, it truly is a misstep that this wasn’t made into a spin off similar to capsule monsters or an OVA.
"Oh I'm having that dream again where Pegasus' protege blames me for his master's death and kidnaps Tea. Also something something Wicked God cards. And Bandit Keith is a zombie!?"
Yugioh R is fine but I think some duels should be a bit longer, some like the beginning ones are done in less than 5 turns. But the rest is really fine, the story is what you could expect after battle city, the characters are ok, especialy the twins and Bandi which return and defeat by his own card was really well done.
If there is ever an adaptation of the manga(Which probably will never happen, but hope always dies last), then this really gotta be in there. It is not vital to understanding the manga or anything and not all of it is stellar(There is that one scene where the antagonist goes all "The truth is, Yugi really hates you, Pharaoh!" and it is just pointless because Yugi is literally right there and explains it to be a clear cut lie right after), but it is 100% worthwhile enough to be adapted between BC and MW.
And yeah as a spinoff manga it would have been interesting as maybe a standalone Yugioh “season” unrelated to the anime or at least not bound to the canon of the Yugioh anime (or GX anime which again Pegasus was alive and kicking)
Wonder how they would adapt it. Considering the plot revolves around bringing Pegasus back to life after Yami Bakura killed him in the Manga. In the anime, however, Pegasus is still alive and well. So they would have to alter the plot to go with the anime timeline.
It was hard to find a website that had all the chapters. Some chapters I had to just look at in japanese and read the wiki page for context. Good read though
I'd love to watch this episode, unfortunately, there is no good way to read this. I refuse to do Shonen Jumps subscription thing through google play and they haven't restocked Vol 1 and 5 in ages (the only volumes I'm missing). So I'll have to come back to this probably years from now.
i haven't read Yu-Gi-Oh R, but i read the outline for it and i really liked it. i'd have genuinely rather had R adapted as a season of the show rather than the Grand Championship arc. maybe set after the Waking the Dragons arc and before Dawn of the Duel? they'd have to write around Pegasus though since he survives in the anime, but with all the things changed in the anime, they could've easily given another motive for the antagonist
Yugioh R to me was much better then any of the yugioh DM filler arcs while waking the dragons had it moments the writing was off in place though if you could make this an anime arc you could take the plot of this story and somehow mix its core plots with the pyramid of light movies plot we could have something like Yugi and Kaiba vs Yako and then later Anubis we have Mai with an evil god with the same characterization from waking the dragons while having the evil god in some sense posioning her dueling spirit leading her to find a way to redeem herself like in waking the dragons same with bandit Keith's return and his vengence to Joey while also showing Yugi now using his post battlecity deck while now using the God cards regularly. Though I give Kaiba more credit I wish he was able to get himself and Yako to a draw showing that despite facing 2 god cards Kaiba will pull a means to either avoid a loss or force a tie though Manga Kaiba and Yugi teaming up against Yako would be interesting to see. We get alot more lore with this book adding elements to both the god cards and to the evil gods and showing that pegasus had contingency plans for if the God cards were unleashed. What would you consider the best counter card to the Egyptian God cards? Blue eyes shining Dragon, the wicked Gods, Pyramid of light, etc.
Ok. Yu-Gi-Oh R. If I'm going to be honest with you Dylan and Rarity I hate this story. This is my most hated Yu-Gi-Oh story while Arc V is my least favorite Yu-Gi-Oh season. I do not like it. I read it because my school libraries had the Shonen Jump magazines that published this story and it lost me. The main reason why is because of the main villain Yuko and a little bit of Gako. He was overpowered to me and if I'm being frank, all this could have been avoided if he just asked Atem what really happened!! The only interesting thing about this really is the Wicked God's but they've just been forgotten about on the card game side after they were printed. Reading it, hoping it would get better for me was painful and I don't ever want to do that again like a certain Super Sentai show I won't name and no I never ever want to have this adapted ever and no I don't care if it's fan made. Get it out of here!
I also love R a lot, some fun facts:
In Vol.1 Ito tells us that the story was something they couldn't add in the og manga (why was that we don't know but maybe something like what happened with Millenium World and having to scrap the plot of Seto and Kisara, maybe they didn't have all the ideas laid out at the time and had to release something), but the story was Takahashi's idea, in fact R came out barely a month after the og manga ended (last chapter was released March 8, 2004 while R1 was released April 21, 2004), it was like if Yugioh never finished just changed to become a monthly manga
Pegasus nickname in the game was Taiyo Tenma, so it likely is a reference, also if i remember correctly Anzu was never in the school to begin with, she was a hologram the entire time, Yako legit kidnapped her and waited to have his dramatic revelation to see Yugi's reaction and then he properly started project R.A. he was a true hater
Some other details, the special chapter has some interesting retrospective continuty, remember that Yugi didn't want his grandpa to display the Gods in the store? well guess what the special chapter is all about, that special chapter would be the perfect intermediate episode to transition from BC to R in an adaptation (since it does take place before R's story)
About expanding continuity, the god's hierarchy wasn't introduced here, but R is where the thing is actually explained, it's very funny to see. And bandit Keith is a zombie
I would like to see Yugioh R manga getting an anime adaptation as a short spinoff series or OVA.
Wait, people like KC Grand Championship more than Doma?
Not really
People who only want to see the gameplay and don't care about the plot do. The duels are the only actually good part of the arc.
Blue eyes shining Dragon, the wicked Gods, Pyramid of light, etc.
i always consider this as true canon for me.
Yako Tenma should be in duel links
Ok.
