I was laughing and crying at the same time watching your video. My people left Barbados to build the Panama Canal a century ago, and with them came all the Bajan traditions. We still strip down the house for Christmas we paint, we hang new curtains, we got to have new bedding in our beds, the whole nine yards. Black Cake for Christmas is a must in Panama, even families who are not of West Indian descend have it in their tables. I preserve my fruits an entire year in advance, so I can’t wait to try your recipe. Thank you for posting this video, sis.
Hi Dulce, Thank you for your beautiful comments! My Great grandparents also left to work on the Panama Canal, My grandfather never return to Barbados but my great grandmother did. I don't know too much about they stories I was little at the time. Many of our people left the Island and I'm sure was looking for a better life, things back then was very tough. I can see them taking part of their culture along with them. Hopefully soon in the near future I will visit Panama and get to see this Canal that attracted so many of our people. Tina, I am so happy to see you on youtube. Wow! My Mom has since passed and I wanted to make a fruit cake for the holidays. I've only made it once; when my Mom came to visit me. She taught me how to preserve the fruits which I have been set for years; checking and adding wine. I now have two large glass jars full. No one does fruit cake-like Barbados. Thank you Thank you. Omg, we from vincy did the same things.. I thought that was vincies alone who knew about the grass stuffed mattress.. We scrub the wooden floors, bought new linoleum the smell of the new table cloth, the soft drinks making sure we catch the ju c trucks to buy our drinks.. Oh what a good life we had back then... I enjoy your reminiscing..
Beverly those days are hard to forget, I did not realize what a good time I had around the holidays until I got older and moved away from home. My mom use to hang the ham to the roof and when we pass by we would hit it with our hands and that ham smell would be heaven on earth ,you just bought back memories girl. Barbados I come from .
I am from Belize, and we would do the same cultural practices. Stand the wooden floors and the furniture and paint them varnish them back new curtains, new tablecloth, new bedsheets , but I never know of the grass bed. I’ve never heard of that before we never have grass band live in Belize city and they would mattresses spring mattresses and that’s what we had but just the same way you described that it’s the same way we doesn’tbelieve, especially when making that black and black fruitcake and white cake my grandmother used to make 5 pounds of white cake and a metal bucket and then she mixed it with the paddle a wooden paddle because we never have electric hand beater, but it was pure fun and excited for the day that the Lord had that on the cross for us and we were happy kids and our grandparents provide for us Thank God for them. We had a lovely childhood living in Belize and I guess you guys done the same in Barbados as well I love😊❤ the accent laugh out loud have a wonderful Christmas season merry Christmas.
@@pmoseswinters Hello and thank you so much for watching! It’s funny how we all have the same cultural practices that came from our ancestors, who were dropped off throughout the Caribbean. I wish you a very Merry Christmas 🎄 and a prosperous New Year.

Hi ThisisA I am so glad you and your mom were able to watch the video. Hopefully you’ll can make some black cake for the Christmas holiday. Thanks for watching.
My family and I are Bajans. For years my Mother was the Christmas baker. But unfortunately doing our baking was always from memory (a pinch of this a dash of that) but sadly the memory is fading. Thank you so much for this video you and my Mom make it exactly the same way....lime peel and ALL😃
Good morning Armyne! That is awesome! I am so glad I'm able to bring you those memories again. I had to learn my measurement when I started this channel. I'm from the old school growing up with my grandmother, she would always say put a pinch of this or a dash of that, everything was just eye balling so I grew up doing the same thing. When I started this channel I knew people wanted to have measurement so I worked on it and today I'm able to bring some great tasting original Barbados recipe. Thank you so much for watching and I wish you a very Merry Christmas
The rum hit you on the second bite lol lol I remember my great grandmother making these at Christmas the thing with those old people they never measured anything but it always came out great. Despite having the recipe no one in the family has been able to get that same taste.
Hi Bajeboi, it's something about the way those older people cook, they foods always came out good but because there never measured, it's hard to replicate what their did. What you have to do is continue using the recipe you have and keep tweaking it until you get it just right The black cake I made came out really great if you want to give it a try.Thank you for watching and be bless.
Hi Sandy, yes go ahead and make the cake if you follow the recipe as is, you will have a perfect Christmas cake that you can share with family and friends. Let me know how it comes out.
Hey Tina, time in UK 17.43 Sunday I love the singing and your attire lol you are really in the Christmas spirit. Hi Angel, It’s Christmas in the air. This COVID has been devastating for a lot of people. My mission is to get myself and everyone in the spirit of cheerfulness. Yes those grass bed go way back, you probably had to be a county girl to experience that. Lol. I wanted to do live, but because I knew the cake would take a long time, I thought it best not too. Good morning Arlene, I got the pans from the 99 cent store here in Florida, I also saw them in Walmart at one point but that was around the Christmas holiday. Yes Falernum is clear but I had that for so long It turned the color. I tried to find it here but I cant, hopefully soon I'll get some from Bim. Thank you so much for watching have a bless day.
Love your recipes, just a question your dry spices measurements in your video are for a two pound cake, and in your description below it’s the same for a one pound cake. Is the written description wrong and it should be 1/2 ?? I don’t drink so I can’t taste if it’s off lol, and I’m making for my husbands family as a surprise and don’t want it to be wrong!! 😊😊
Yes 😊Even though you are making a two pound cake the spices should be one tsp each except for the vanilla, the reason is you don't want the spices to be overpowering. Hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year,

First let me say congratulations on your upcoming wedding! That's a special occasion. Those were the good old days when things were nice, my grandma had a oven made from a barrel, we had fun doing work to help, love those days.
Hi Patricia, we can now look back at those day and realize how how much fun we had, they shaped us into the people we are today.
I plan to do my cakes this week before New Years' Eve 2020 and I will report back to you on how it went. I am truly happy to have found you and please keep sharing baking and cooking from Barbados. Thank you, you take me down memory lane.
Hi Pauline, I know how you feel! Going down memory lane every once in awhile is a good feeling. Thanks for watching enjoy your day.
I am from Belize, and we would do the same cultural practices. Stand the wooden floors and the furniture and paint them varnish them back new curtains, new tablecloth, new bedsheets , but I never
know of the grass bed.

You cake is fantastic 🍹💃🏾
Thank you so much! I just recently uploaded a new video step by step on how to make a Bajan black cake if you want to take a look at that.
Thanks for watching and Happy New Year,
After hearing your video I wish I grew up with you in your house in Barbados. 🥰🤩
Hi Gerry, That's not a good wish lol, my grandmother was a tough cookie, she did not spear the belt. Hope you have fantastic day. 😍

Dear, I hope you read this. I grew up in Barbados and it's the home of my heart. I'm about to prep my fruits for my wedding cake in honor of my bajan family and my dear memories of my beautiful island. Could you tell me how many servings this is for?
First let me say congratulations on your upcoming wedding! That's a special occasion. I believe that I made about 2 lbs. of that cake, I'm guessing it would serve around 40 people, the reason is black cake is a very dense cake loaded with alcohol, serving size will be smaller that a traditional regular cake. Hope I was able to help. Thanks for watching.
