I spent most of my day watching all your videos today. I am 56, got my old skates out, and went out to the garage to practice. I was so excited to find your videos because I've often thought of skating again but it's been so long (since I was in my early 20's) and here where I live on the East Coast (Mass) I can't find anyplace where you can get a lesson or even just skate with adults. It seems no one over 16 roller skates around here - I always loved it, never had a lesson per say, and now that I have found you I am so motivated to learn all these techniques I can't wait until tomorrow to practice some more! Thank you so much and can't wait for your next video!!!
Hey there, same here...bringing back the '70s. I'm fortunate enough to have a rink near me. Hopefully my new skates will be here Friday night. I take our foster kiddo on Friday nights for all-skate, and working up to the Saturday night adults only skate. I was shocked at how much my body forgot after 30 years and 50 pounds. But also shocked how it is coming back, watching these videos. Best of luck to you. Maybe somehow you can build interest among friends and family to go with you and have fun.
@@Dirtydeborahharry I was doing great for 4 days then I was working on backwards skating, my skate wheel got stuck somehow and I fell backwards, spraining my wrist. Luckily I had a helmet on (I am actually a horseback rider - I ride and teach Dressage) but no other protective gear. My friend and I took our horses up to New York and, the first day there, I dislocated my baby toe. Again, luckily, I was able to get my riding boot on and continued my riding but need to let it heal before getting back to the skating because the skate hurts too much! I have been very accident prone the last couple months (had a car accident too - no one hurt) but I can't wait to get back to it!!! I need to clean my skates and buy wrist guards and pads first.
I'm so glad you are doing these great instructional videos. At 50-something I'm back on wheels, and you are helping me do it safely, breaking down all the pieces so I can teach myself how to be effortless again.
I'm no professional but I love showing people that just started skating little things like this and then watch them improve drastically in just a couple hours. I got one girl to go from being terrified of going backwards to actually turning (sloppy but functional) and going backwards. The next week we smoothed her turn.. she fell several times but kept trying.. At the end of the session I was taking off my skates and she came off the floor and hugged me with tears in her eyes.. I think that is what kept her skating. That is so awesome to me. I am teaching myself the 2 step.. 2 months ago I couldn't back step my left foot.. Now I am working on flowing it in the turn.. (right side is great, left... Not yet.. good footin.. 😏) Oh and I'm doing it on wide wheeled speed skates so there have been some clearance issues.. (read: crashing..).. to overcome. Still protecting my knee from the high speed crash a few weeks ago.. I might have cracked the knee cap.. there is a noticeable groove in it.. Anyway, Thanks! Have fun. Looking good.
Inside edges are the prettier ones imho. Because you can bring your free foot and present it like a fancy lady. Like hello, dear have you seen my foot? Isn't it lovely #classy
Learned how to do a crossover over the last two months, realized I needed more practice on one-foot skating to improve, this is the perfect video!! Gonna go out and skate in a bit, thanks Ms Deborah! 🎉
These videos work so well. I can actually follow these and learn new things that I haven't been able to do in years of having other people "teach" me... I think it's the breakdown of the movement and clear explanations. At any rate, these videos are awesome.
Me, wifey, her sister and her husband decided yesterday that we're gonna get back into skating like we use to - which has been over 20yrs ago now. So with me being one of the weaker skaters, I decided to run to RUclips for some help. I came across some of your videos, and I have to say, they are so well detailed, precise & clear. The only thing that would be better than watching your videos is having you here in ATL so you could give me & wifey some lessons. Somehow you are able to break down every move into manageable steps, and that's important. Keep up the good work! Question: what's a good site to purchase skates?
I definitely aim to work on my weaker side so that I'm a more balanced skater. I'm just returning to skating after not skating since I was like 13! And I remember that I favored one side over the other but there are things you can't do if you don't work the edges on both sides. Thanks, Deb for reminding us that it's all possible with enough practice.
Oh man thank you for the advice of not looking at the cone but at your next place you will end up. It really helped me with jumping over small things. To not look and worry about the thing i am jumping over but to look at the space right after the thing I am jumping over. I am still just jumping over small cracks in the road but it has helped a lot and it's not even a video about jumping!!
Most helpful video yet, Deb!! I needed drills to develop my edges and you educated me on the importance of edges and the prerequisite skill of single leg stance on skate. I have been relying on my R skate to weight bear and have a lot more success with counter clockwise transisitions compared to my off balance, light weight on L skate and weak clockwise transitions. Your passion and energy of skating and education is admirable. Thank you for your effort and time.
Love your videos! Started practicing daily, but I think I missed some fundamentals. Can’t wait to practice these figure 8s, and maybe some of the moves I’ve been struggling with will come together finally! You’re doing the skate lord’s work 🙏🏼
Thank you for all your videos! I am a beginner, and the first few times, I practiced in my apartment on a wood floor (there is enough room). I learned scissors forward and backward, scissors with one foot at a time, and even the cha-cha steps backward from one of your videos, and I felt pretty good about my progress. Yesterday, for the first time, I went to a rink.. and well, it was so much harder! The wood floor was not nearly as smooth as my hardwood floor, and except for practicing scissors a few times, I was mostly worried about not falling when roller skating forward. The floor in the videos looks so much smoother. Will keep practicing at home, and practice the most basics at the rink at least until I feel comfortable.
When you change venues, your brain needs to adjust. Your brain, by default, will go into emergency mode to protect you. I strongly urge you to continue to go to the rink and you will get used to that floor in no time.
Thank you for explaining this so clearly. This is definitely one I'll be practice practice practicing! I have been struggling to work out this so to see the breakdown is so valuable to get the basics right. Thank you Debbie!
Really informative tutorial. Thank you! I now see how I'm using my edges without even thinking about it. I'm gonna give my edges a bit more respect now! 😁 Couple of questions for you Debs, do you inline? And have you done slalom in quads? Xx
Dirty School of Skate have you ever went to skate and didn’t have skates on? Sorta like riding a bike. After some time. You get off and your legs feel wobbly🥴😆
lol love it Deborah... yes I am one of those Good leg Bad leg skaters.... but I am practising a lot more and watching all your videos so soon will be able to do all( (bad leg included) lol Thanks for sharing x
Thank you DDH!!! I continually have the ‘falling backward’ momentum in the up up up and standing position. Pointing toes together doesn’t help. I feel like a snowboarder that has to sit down all the time! I have Sure Grip derby skates by default and I love them while waiting for my Boardwalk size to come in. I’ve skated many years off and on and haven’t experienced this to this degree. If I bend over/lean way forward I’m ok...I’m not understanding why I can’t be in an ‘up’ position without doing the ‘comic drop’. My tail bone has had it! 😂 I appreciate all and any tips...REALLY appreciate your channel and always recommend!!!! ☮️💖🧩
Let's try really focusing on keeping your weight on the ball of your feet and feeling the outside of your boot with every stride. Put pressure down with your arms to the side of every stride. You must focus on skating is movement of the body side to side and NEVER forward backward.
My dream is to come to California and be able to skate with you🤩. You've helped me soo much on my journey to become a master rollerskater. I would love to become a rolling skating instructor and teach other beginners how to skate❤ thank you soo much for your incredible and inspiring instructional videos🤗
How do your skates fit? Do you have wide feet or a high arch? I’ve got wide feet and I notice that crampy feeling most when I wear shoes/skates that are too narrow or that are too tight across the arch. There are a few ways to lace skates to help deal with that, you should find them pretty easily via a Google search.
I worked on these yesterday and found it difficult to put weight on the lead foot and turn tight. Are you sitting in the lead heal and pushing the edge to turn? I feel I may be too far center on the skate to turn if that makes sense. I can do it if I sit in the back foot and lift the front skate. I know that isn’t correct.
Hey Deborah! Love these videos. Your instructions are so clear and precise! Real easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much. 3 quick questions. What size wheels do you use/ recommend to do this kind of skating? i.e. Height, width and durometer. Is there a way to find out the durometer of my existing skate wheels? And finally, What kind of plates produce the best control and results? i.e. Nylon, Aluminium etc. Thanks so much for all you do!
@@Dirtydeborahharry Hey Deborah! Thanks for your quick reply. I have been skating since I was 6 and I am now 58. I have a pair of Chicago skates from 1979 with steel plates. New trucks in mid-90's. I have Zinger wheels from the 80's that are 55mm high by 38 wide. Not sure of the durometer. I live in Connecticut where there are only 3 rinks in the entire state! ( Love the set up of your rink by the way. Very warm friendly, good signage and lighting.) Both rinks where I skate have wood in good condition. Not sure about the applied surface or stickiness. My wheels feel too grippy under my feet and they feel a bit wide. They are indoor wheels but feel somewhat soft. Just not sure If I have the right hardness or it they are too wide for artistic skating. .

Fabulous instruction, as always! All your video's are incredibly valuable to me as a skating teacher in Oz, so thank you! I would love to see a video breaking down the elements of a snake walk? I've watched a couple of videos of others doing the snake walk, but you are brilliant at simplifying things, communicating the essentials in a way that makes the instruction accessible to all!! Pretty please with cherries on top! :-)
First, I love your videos, you have amazing energy and you provide lots of useful info. Secondly, a question: I am a more ‘mature’ woman (turning 57 next month), very fit and athletic and generally able to quickly master new skills but skating...😩 I believe that it’s fear holding me back, which results in me being too stiff. How do I overcome this fear? Injuries don’t help, I fell and really badly bruised both knees 2 days ago (stupidly wasn’t wearing my knee pads) and I always worrying that an injury will take me out of my main sports of powerlifting and middle distance running. Any tips?
Find a contained place to skate. Do not just take off in a straight line to anywhere. Make sure you have removed all debris. Make sure your skates are adjusted properly. Once you have your skates on, get all the way down on the ground and then get back up. Repeat multiple times. Stretch. Plan on working on only forward skating and stopping. Do not proceed until you are super comfy. Watch my "Dirty Talks" playlist. I talk about strategies in these videos.
@@Dirtydeborahharry thanks for the reply. I’ve also now joined my local RD and they do classes, which are fantastic! Your videos are invaluable, I’m learning so much from them 😊
Hi there, love your videos. My husband has never skated in his life and wants to skate, any advice on getting him to pick up his foot to cross in the turn?
Deborah, please give me your advice! Whenever I try to do the cone drill (or just turning in general), I loose so much momentum that I just can't do more than that one turn around the cone before I need to pick up the speed. How do I keep the momentum when turning? I don't know if this is because I practice outside on rougher terrain, but it is super hard for me to keep the speed without having to "boost"!
I’ve only been skating for about 8 months and I can’t get transitions and scrossovers. I can skate backwards through. I think I need to get stronger with my edges. Are my large 65mm outdoor wheels a hinderance or should they work just fine? I’m mostly skating on concrete and basketball courts.
Hey Sis**You smooth on dem skates lol! How often do you replace or clean your bearings? I find myself cleaning them after a Rink visit for a good roll while skating. Is that normal?
Could you make a video on how to skate for people who are.. Well plus size, I'm plus size and also a beginner and I usually have a hard time dropping my hips because it usually causes me pain so what should a plus size skater do? Thank you in advance for any advice
I need help with my outside edges! I’ve learned so many things from your channel over the past few years, and can even do some fun tricks, but balancing on outside edges always comes back to haunt me. I practiced this video so many times, but to no avail. I’ve even recently started taking ice skating lessons and the one thing I have trouble with is my outside edges. If I glide I can’t stay straight, my body always wants to use an inside edge. How do I correct this?
Oh! I have a video idea! I haven't gotten started yet and love all types of roller skating, rink, speed, slalom, the whole shebang. I don't see people talking about figure skating much and I was wondering do you have any opinions or takes on it? Maybe what it involves or how it compares to other kinds of skating? I think I'd like to do it some day but it'd be good to know what basics to get good at first Or maybe just a video on what all the different types of roller skating are? If this isn't your territory that's totally okay! I just wanted to ask just in case cos I love your videos and way of explaining things. Hope you're having a great weekend ✨
@@Dirtydeborahharry that's so good to know! Thank you! Oh god I really sound like a noob don't I, I'm sorry for my misguide questions haha. I'll keep this in mind going forward!

Hi Deborah! How should we adjust our set up for all these moves? Thank you very much!
Im an excellent skater 👍🏼because thats all we were able to do in 1986 but she sure make it look easy !!! 🤦♀️😂😂
A sério? Incrível. És a professora do século.
I love this video so much! Ty..ty!!
Wao que bien enseñas,felicidades🌺🌷
Muchas gracias. Realmente aprecio que veas mis videos :)
Thank you!!!🙌🏾
First, I love your videos, you have amazing energy and you provide lots of useful info.
Secondly, a question: I am a more ‘mature’ woman (turning 57 next month), very fit and athletic and generally able to quickly master new skills but skating...😩
I believe that it’s fear holding me back, which results in me being too stiff.
Have him watch my crossover video. It is all about holding the left outside edge.
Love your videos. And I want your shirt! Where can I find me one?
I think when we are skating backwards, then unknowingly ,we are actually accessing our inner edges.
Hi! Is there a video about doing edges with your feet together? I have seen people doing it but I find it very hard. Thanks!
Hello!! Thanks for the tips! What wheels would you recommend? I have the fundae wheels on and the curved edges are really hard to learn in.
We see u out here debs!!!
:) Thank you so much!
Could you please talk about obligated figures, open loops, brackets, and all those circles stuff?
On the list!!!!!!!!!
Thank you :) I clean them every 6 weeks. A simple wipe down of the skate boot, plate, wheels, bearings after skating should do you just fine.
Dirty School of Skate thx Ma-Lady:)
DDH- skate #1..Ima use a canz o' beer for figure 8 practice.
YES!!!!
Could you make a video on how to skate for people who are.. Well plus size, I'm plus size and also a beginner and I usually have a hard time dropping my hips because it usually causes me pain so what should a plus size skater do? Thank you in advance for any advice
Hi Deborah would you say its best to practice this before learning crossovers?
I think I'd like to do it some day but it'd be good to know what basics to get good at first
Or maybe just a video on what all the different types of roller skating are?
If this isn't your territory that's totally okay! I just wanted to ask just in case cos I love your videos and way of explaining things. Hope you're having a great weekend ✨
Everything I teach here is from a figure skating perspective. Figure skating is classical training and is the foundation for all other types.
@@Dirtydeborahharry that's so good to know! Thank you! Oh god I really sound like a noob don't I, I'm sorry for my misguide questions haha. I'll keep this in mind going forward!
