I have been skating for ........hell a long time. I still fall. A young lady asked me, do you ever fall. I said, just watch me for a few minutes! Lol. Yeah, we all fall. I think my right hip takes a beating the most. I don't know why, it just does.
You're truly my skate mentor. You speak to my SOUL with your advice. I wish I had had your videos in my life when I was younger and growing up. I just think you are such a fantastic person and I love you. I want to meet in real life so badly!
Don't be embarrassed to fall. We all fall! If you don't fall, then you ain't trying anything new. I've had bruises that I thought would never heal! Lol. Falling is part of the learning process.
If this video existed when I first got my skates id say it would save about three months of my life if not more 😅😅 I went from thinking I would remember how to skate from my childhood to deciding to teach myself by just "feelling it out" to almost backing out from taking up skating after the first few times I tried on my skates because I went into it with the wrong posture, knees unbent and just attempting to walk with wheels attached to me. This video is gonna be so helpful to so many people who are starting out, because to be completely honest the video resources out there for newbies are VERY limited. So thanks, Deb
I'm 21 and I've never skated in my life but I've really wanted to learn for about a year now, and a few months ago I found a really good deal on some used Moxi Lollys and decided to bite, but I haven't used them because I've been too scared! I've always been the most scared about bending my knees because my knees are reaaaally crunchy and bad for someone my age, but I didn't really understand what you always meant by "bend your knees" until you compared it to volleyball and other sports, then it clicked for me: Standing with your knees bent hurts, but when you're up and moving around and putting your weight on the balls of your feet you feel light and agile and powerful. Deb, that sentence right there is what just pushed me over the edge! I'm not scared anymore, I'm going skating for my birthday in a couple of weeks thanks to this video!
When I started skating and I was learning cross-overs, backwards skating, etc, if I thought I was going to say "I'm terrible at this" I'd stop myself and say "ok, how do I do this better?" instead. This helped me to reset my mind and allowed me to enjoy skating and to progress on my own terms. (Hello from England, btw - love your vids :) )
I've been roller skating for a year now. Don't need to be watching this video, but I watch every upload. Thank you for all you do for the new skaters out there! You helped me so much ✌🏾 I'm planning a Cali road trip this spring, and can't wait to skate this rink 🤩
You explain this SO WELL!! And the fact it’s short it’s LIFESAVER! I litterally have ten minutes before we go skating and this video is only 7 MINUTES!!!!
So glad you said that about wearing your skates indoors... I've been skating for about 7 weeks now and wear my skates indoors most days. I only go to the rink once a week, but my skating and confidence have improved so quickly as a result of wearing them around the house... they feel like an extension of my body 😊 Thanks for all of the fantastic videos Dirty... I've learnt so much from you already ❤️🙏
"You will be terrible!" sad but true 😂 Just got my skates 2 days ago, soooo... it gives me confidence in getting less terrible or aka better and better Thanks, Debbie!
Just discovered your stuff while researching because I impulsively bought a pair of skates for the first time ever. I love your attitude! Thank you for the reminder to chill out, laugh at myself and really just have fun with it 💕 wish me luck.
Skaters do not walk but transfer the weight from the body to the legs according to your instructions. In relation to me, I didn't know how to be the method of transferring the body. I'm going to start training like that, Deborah.
I love watching you skate.. I am so sad because I had started to skate again to join derby. a month in to derby I shattered my ankle on skates and was told I can never skate again. Breaks my heart. Really. But I love watching you do it. Totally awesome Deb. Totally awesome.
Get a second opinion!! And a third. I was told the same thing when I was younger. Chronic ankle instability. I can roll - and break - my ankle just walking down the street. Oddly enough, since I got back into skating, with speed skates no less, I feel my ankles are actually stronger than they've ever been!
Trimalleolar fracture on my ankle which required surgery (last week). I was safe and consistent with practice and then boom. I was indoors on wood floor and going so slow that to this day I’m not sure how my foot/ankle rolled. I agree that you should get another opinion and in the meantime eat healthy and do all that is required with your physical therapy. Keep your mindset positive, believe me I know this can be challenging. Take breaks and keep small goals and have a big reward that you can look forward to in the future. I plan on continuing to skate. This is in my heart in a big beautiful way. I wish you a wonderful recovery inside and out. We will learn a lot and grow from this experience.
hello..there's nothing like real assurance and/or encouragement leaving a beginner to understand that with practice, practice one can advance ... good show..peace
"I take my fingertips and touch my calves" LOL!!! Favorite part of the video hahaha thanks for all the great videos! I started learning last year and I'm so happy I found your videos!
I'm 26 and got my first skates for Christmas and I finally got to try them out. I can kinda go forward now, but its keep momentum forward safely and not going backwards are tricky for me at this point 🤣 I enjoyed your video since it did help out a bit moving in the direction I want 🤣 hopefully in the next couple of days I will get it down so I can try to learn how to turn, thank you for your video and I hope other beginners discover it soon 💞💞💞
I love roller blading and ice skating but for some reason I have trouble roller skating. This video was very informative and I can’t wait to get some skates and try it all out!
Yassss SNACK AREA - TIGHT! I go through your posture check whenever I skate now and my form is so much better. You are right, it automatically makes ever move so much better and smoother just with the right posture. THANKS Dirty! SKATERS make sure you play your favorite MUSIC! It makes a huge difference, increases your energy level and you will have fun!
I ordered my first pair of skates in the beginning of october, and they arrived today! I've been seriously wanting to skate lately I've watched your video about what *kind* of skates to get, as well as this one! Can't wait!
#4 - You WILL fall. It's part of learning. :D Beginners or those who've taken a few years off, even with getting low, you're going to end up on the floor/ground now and then. Get low, but don't "fight" the fall. Like car accidents, people who've been asleep during a car accident have fewer injuries (and much fewer serious injuries) than those who are awake because when we see it coming, our bodies automatically tense up. When our bodies are tense (stiff), more things...well...frankly...break. Skating outdoors - get pads! Skating indoors - if it will make you feel more comfortable/confident...get pads! :)
Hey Deb. I haven't skated in 40 years but I'm taking my GF for cocktails this weekend and then to a skating rink nearby during their midnight adult skating session. I have been reviewing a few of your videos and I appreciate all your "schooling". .......You may have prevented me from a ton of embarrassment. Thank you !
Your videos are super nice!! I am starting to learn rollerskating in Germany and due to covid, I can only teach myself with tutorials, and yours are super sweet and helfpul!! :) Thanks. :D
I love that you talk! It helps me so much. I don't mind the quick videos, but sometimes having more information is better. ^^ Btw I'm the blonde on Saturday who came up to you and thanked you. You have helped me tremendously. Thank you again!
OK, I've made my decision!! I'm going to head over to FVSC on Monday night and have some adult lessons. I have ALWAYS wanted to know how to skate backwards and do some turns and scissors and I'm so afraid to try new things during regular skate sessions at the rink I usually go to. I'm pretty comfortable going forwards and I can do crossover turns but that's about it. I'm so tired of trying to learn by trial and error!! I need some coaching!!
At last, that I managed to discover one of the ways, which I think, I can better adapt to rollerblading Deborah. Through the method taught by you, the transfer of the body over the leg. And I will focus exclusively on my training in this exercise only.
I bought some skates and they should be here within a couple days and I am nervous and excited to start. I only skated for like 10 minutes in 7th grade. I was too scared. I am now going into college and I want to conquer my fear of falling and skating.
I definitely think my issue is keeping a lot of weight on the arch of my foot. Had to go back to a basics video so help my skating (going on a month of doing it next week). Gotta listen to Debra!
Hey Deborah! I’ve been binge watching your videos and I finally got the Mohawk turn! I mean I’m still practicing but I got the gist! Thankyou! Also it’d be amazing if you’d post more transition videos ! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Deborah good morning. How is everything? I'm Jaime Reis, look at this video of yours now, in my training I learned to turn just with the incline of the skates without having to lift the skates and I'm training this method of turning. I want to ask you what you call this type of training? I wish you a good workout. Kisses from Jaime Reis.
Love your tutorials! And you’re so adorably CUTE! 😍😍. Could you do a video on one foot pivots?. I think that’s what it’s called lol. Just the progression on learning how to do them.
Please do a video on how to pick out proper safety gear for skating outside. The sizing information online is misleading and often inconsistent from site to site for the same product. Also, it’s hard as a plus sized person to find the right gear. I don’t know what to buy and I want to skate outside. My hubby built me Vans skates and I wanna use them. Also side question, I have skateboard wheels on my Vans skates and they seem to work well. Is there any reason I shouldn’t use skateboard wheels? I like the styles so much better.
It's best to practice....wherever you can! Indoors, outdoors, in your bathroom, the courtyard at work, in your kitchen, your school's quad/outdoor lunch area/etc., in your living room, or at the local tennis/basketball court. Just be sure you have the proper wheels for whatever surface you're skating on. :)
Hi Deb, I am watching all of your videos and they are really amazing 😍! I wish so bad I would live near you, so I could visit the skating school...but I am so far away...best wishes and thank you from Germany (Berlin), Steffi
I'm loving the quick and dirty videos, but I was curious to see if you could do an in-depth video on pivots? I'm thinking about trying to learn that next but I am absolutely lost on what to do and the mechanics of it.
I love your videos! I recently got myself back into skating and as much as I suck at it, I sure do have a ton of fun (Even if I look a bit dorky doing it haha)! You're videos help me a lot :)
Always love your videos! But.. how long have you been on those "new skates" now? Cuz they still squeak a ton. Never heard any skates squeak in my life lol, let alone after dozens of skate hours. :) (and for people wondering if there's new info in this video - if you've seen all the past ones, then no. But it's a GREAT combo video for newer skaters. Much easier to show this to my son than show him the three videos where each one is addressed separately! Posture - bent knees - shift body weight. You can all search for videos on those three subjects by DDH/DSS (Dirty Deb Harry/Dirty School of Skate) for expanded versions of each of these subjects).
Hi Dirty Deb! What kind of wheels do you use if you don't mind me asking? I just recently bought Fo-Mac Harmonies and I love the hardness, and the ability to slid while still having some grip (as opposed to wood wheels, or fibers). I'm relatively new to skating though, and I was just wondering if it's more about form when doing tricks such as the one foot spins, or if you rely on softer wheels such as Sure-Grip Zombies to keep from falling.
I wear Sure Grip Velvets that are very similar to the Harmony wheels. It is DEFINITELY about posture and form when spinning etc. If the wheels are too soft, it will be more difficult to spin. The Zombies come in a variety of hardnesses, so stick with the higher number.
I've been skating for almost 7 months, and I'm mostly a self-taught skater; I joined a skate crew a month or two ago, and they are the nicest, most helpful people I know. They tolerate all of my rookie questions, and have shown me a lot about skating. Admittedly I haven't seen all of your videos (yet), but do you have any advice on learning form for more advanced tricks to someone who usually just copies what he sees (from IR and skate party videos), and uses trial and error until he gets it down?
@@Dirtydeborahharry hey miss deb, i recently bought by first solely indoor wheels. They are velvets. I went to the rink with them and they didnt perform any difft than my radar energy or luminous. They seemed even softer and more grip than my fundae wheels
Hey Diana, any advice how to stop roller skating with the brain and muscle memory of a skateboarder? Just got back into roller skating and i keep leading with my right foot like i do on my board and my left leg gets so tired so fast but it feels unnatural to skate with both my feet lined up next to each other. Your videos and your awesome self have made me want to become a better roller skater ♥️
I think I have posture right, but I don't seem to move forward too much so I'm pretty sure I need to loosen my wheels and focus on shifting body weight
I watch your videos but if I can suggest something as a new skater I don’t know what to start learning first so if you can have your videos in order in which I can learn the skills that will be helpful thanks amazing video
I've gone through them all and made a...."cheat sheet"?...with all the videos and what order to watch them in for beginners. I take a couple with me every session at my local rink.
Many thanks, my daughter got a pair of skates for Xmas and is starting to learn. These tutorials are great and she loves watching you. BTW she is nearly 7!
OH I love it! RUclips makes creators state whether or not their videos are made for children specifically. If a creator states that they are made for kids then comments are disabled along with ads :( So even though my vids say they are for adults only … kids are ok to watch too :)
I'm a kids (7 years old) My mom buy me a Roller skates and today my Roller skates from Amazon Shopping is shipping to my house this Friday will open the box
Hi, hope you can help? I’ve noticed that I skate in on a curve better than I skate straight. You mentioned shifting the weight, is that possibly why I’m finding curves easier? And should I shift my weight with the hips or torso to build power?
Depends on many factors. What kind of skating do you do? What skill level? Budget? What performance are you looking for? These companies have lots of models and some will suit your needs and others will not. Both companies have been in the skate business for decades.
I was wondering if there could be a video all about balance? ...unless you've already made one :) I think it would be very helpful to know where your weight should be while doing many different moves. For example, just going forward, is the weight on the heel? The balls of the feet? Evenly spread? I guess this partly has to do with knowing your edges but I find I'm constantly off-balance because I don't know where to specifically put my weight. Again, if this video already exists, what's it called!? Thank youuuu!! :)
Hi I just found your videos and I just started rollerskating at 43 years old haven’t done it since I was a kid. I got skates for myself and my two daughters. Unfortunately we live in Vermont and there was only one roller skating rink and it got shut down last year. 😩 there are skate parks and of course we can get outside but again we are in Vermont so it’s snowy and super cold. a lot. Do you have any suggestions as to where we might ask if we could skate inside? What kind of floors would we need to have? Like, what about a gymnasium? Or a warehouse? Should I just try asking around? We don’t have a whole Lotta safe space in our house.... thanks so much !! love your videos and I am a new subscriber!
Do you have ice rinks? During the winter, hit the ice rinks. You will become great skaters and the skills crossover. Roller skating indoors can literally be done on any surface. We have skated on concrete parking garages, basketball courts, warehouse space … anywhere that you can gain access too :)
Thanks SO much for your reply. Yes we have ice-skating rinks and we do go there so that’s a really good idea I’m glad to know there’s crossover skills!! Also glad to know that we can rollerskate on so many surfaces and I never thought of parking garages! That’s awesome. I super appreciate your encouragement 😁
Hello good afternoon. I am training by the method of transferring the body over the leg. How do you manage to transfer the body over the leg? It makes me confused to leave, one leg behind. Can you help me Deborah? A big hug. Your friend, Jaime.
I actually made up "business cards" (on my computer, plain paper, not actual cards) with this channel and Indy's, that I give out to those I see often who are still struggling. LOL
@@yvonnetavares9802 Don't know what you have, but I use Microsoft Publisher. It's part of Microsoft Office (Windows computer, not sure if they have something similar for Mac users)...anyway, I just made a simple 9-square "grid". In each grid, I just put "Roller Skating RUclips Channels" at the top, then "INDY JAMMA JONES: She specializes in outdoor skating, but has a lot of other fun videos" then "Dirty School of Skate: Dirty Deb does more indoor work, but is adding maintenance and more as well." At the bottom, "Both have amazing tutorials on everything from first standing up on your skates to cornering and more!" I let people chose whose style of teaching they like best...but almost every person comes up and thanks me when I see them again, noting their favorite videos by BOTH of these ladies. (Plus, it's fun to discuss them all with the newer skaters after they've watched a few.) :) I'm sure you probably have a program you could do this with...or you could use an actual (free) business card template from Avery or other brands of business cards sold at your local office supply store (or just the "school supply" area of your local box store)...just print them on normal computer paper. No need to actually buy the blank business cards....unless you want to, of course.
I skate 10 mins a day, my skates are special cause the back wheels are at the edge of my sole but the first 2 is in a line like a mix of roller skates and inline skates what do I do
A few days ago, I saw a girl doing the ''moon walker'' like Michael Jackson with roller skates, can you please do a video about how to do that trick? Thanks honey ❤❤
Hey! I know you were asking her and this comment is old, but I thought I could answer. One of the only things I can do on my skates is moonwalk lol. Basically, you get your feet positioned in a square, then go on your toestop only on one foot, and slide the other one back, then put that foot on your toestop, while coming off of it on your other foot at the same time, and slide that foot back, and keep going. It takes a bit of practice to get into it, but it’s super fun! Hope this helped!
@@Dirtydeborahharry aww thanks for replying 😁 OK this makes sense, I'm always panicking that I'm going to fall still. Just every now and then I get into a grove. I need to practice more. Unfortunately it's raining in London right now. Its out summer and it bloody raining and the rinks aren't open yet 🙄.
Who else wants to see Deb show off how well she can skate? Like doing laps around the rink :)

Love you dirty Deb thank you for helping me learn my dream
Yeah Mel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this Is REALLY help full of me TY
Hey Deborah! I’ve been binge watching your videos and I finally got the Mohawk turn! I mean I’m still practicing but I got the gist! Thankyou! Also it’d be amazing if you’d post more transition videos ! ❤️❤️❤️
I have a "Tips for Transitions" video coming up.
Dirty School of Skate Thankyou ❤️❤️
Can’t wait for my skates to come in!
Great video. These videos rock!
Your videos are awesome!! Keep it up, I really enjoy and feel so inspired to practice. You a badass!!
Thank you so much!
I was reading the comments once I clicked on but when she started clapping 0:38 she got my attention real quick😂 kinda startled me 🤣😂
hahahahha! Pay attention! :)
Love your tutorials! And you’re so adorably CUTE! 😍😍. Could you do a video on one foot pivots?. I think that’s what it’s called lol. Just the progression on learning how to do them.
Thank you! I am going to do a video on pivot spins!
Love the music
Please do a video on how to pick out proper safety gear for skating outside. The sizing information online is misleading and often inconsistent from site to site for the same product. Also, it’s hard as a plus sized person to find the right gear. I don’t know what to buy and I want to skate outside. My hubby built me Vans skates and I wanna use them. Also side question, I have skateboard wheels on my Vans skates and they seem to work well. Is there any reason I shouldn’t use skateboard wheels? I like the styles so much better.
You're a great teacher, you keep it simple and you're realistic in what we should expect,so my question is is it better to practice indoor or outdoor?
Skate both! Each surface has it's own pros and cons. Skating both will make your better on both.
Thank you,so does that mean i have to get 2 pairs of skates for in and out door?
@@babywatt1964 You can have two skate setups or change out your wheels each time you change surfaces.
I am. I am doing one on pivot spins.
@@Dirtydeborahharry I am absolutely stoked! Can't wait to see what you put together this time
I love your videos! I recently got myself back into skating and as much as I suck at it, I sure do have a ton of fun (Even if I look a bit dorky doing it haha)! You're videos help me a lot :)
Love the squeaky sound in the skates.
Always love your videos! But.. how long have you been on those "new skates" now? Cuz they still squeak a ton. Never heard any skates squeak in my life lol, let alone after dozens of skate hours. :)
(and for people wondering if there's new info in this video - if you've seen all the past ones, then no.
Best stretches to help prevent my calves and shins from locking up while skating?
Are you new to skating? What kind of boot are you wearing?
finally, someone that understand we're here to learn and get up and get going, not here to be lectured with 2 minutes of actually showing how
I'm a new skater....about a month...and I love it and think everyone should have wheels on their feet. lol
I love the intro and outro music :)
The artist is Larson McDaniel. He is young and amazing. His YT channel is ruclips.net/channel/UCO_grnSve6U4EEMDAeAbnqg
Graceful 😊😎
Thank you.
This can only be overcome with practice. I realize this every time I snowboard!
How to do you stop shuffling in your skates like walking I can’t seem to shift my weight
I am developing a series to address just that problem. Stay tuned.
YAHOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, hope you can help? I’ve noticed that I skate in on a curve better than I skate straight. You mentioned shifting the weight, is that possibly why I’m finding curves easier? And should I shift my weight with the hips or torso to build power?
Deborah, would you recommend getting riedell or sure grip skate? Which one would you choose and why?
Depends on many factors. What kind of skating do you do? What skill level? Budget? What performance are you looking for? These companies have lots of models and some will suit your needs and others will not. Both companies have been in the skate business for decades.
Dirty School of Skate indoor skating I am pretty good at skating( I can’t skate backwards yet lol) my max budget would be $200
I was wondering if there could be a video all about balance? ...unless you've already made one :) I think it would be very helpful to know where your weight should be while doing many different moves. :)
I talk about weight placement in every video because it is EVERYTHING! I will dedicate an entire video to it though because it is deserving :)
@@Dirtydeborahharry That would be great! Thank you!
Thank you
Hi I just found your videos and I just started rollerskating at 43 years old haven’t done it since I was a kid.
Move your shoulders and your upper body over the top of the foot.
@@Dirtydeborahharry
Thank you your help me.
Just got my skates
Quik n fast👍🏾
The people in the background are distracting.. 👍you are amazing!
I constantly tell everyone at rink about you. 🌈😁
I actually made up "business cards" (on my computer, plain paper, not actual cards) with this channel and Indy's, that I give out to those I see often who are still struggling. LOL
Good idea!
Thank you so much!
Thx
Well I got the first part down
She makes it look so easy tho
You will too once you practice a lot.
Hi Deb! what skates do you recommend? (skates that last long, for male and female)
I have a video (in the gear playlist) you should watch. It is called "Buying Roller Skates" it may help you.
yes I’ve watched it but it didn’t say where they are available for purchase and the name of the skates?
What does it mean if your a new skater and you get lower backaches?
Mostly due to tensing your muscles because of anxiety. Try to relax a bit.
@@Dirtydeborahharry aww thanks for replying 😁
OK this makes sense, I'm always panicking that I'm going to fall still. Just every now and then I get into a grove. I need to practice more. Unfortunately it's raining in London right now. Its out summer and it bloody raining and the rinks aren't open yet 🙄.
If you screw up, just get up! Must keep in mind that! :)
I look like a penguin but I’m just happy they I can finally skate toward! It took me a week 😂
