Connecting pedals to the effects loop...revisited

- Опубликовано: 21 ноя 2016
- In April of this year (2016) I created a video showing why you'd want to run some effects through the effects loop of an amp when possible. I had some comments asking me specifically how to connect them to the effects loop. As a result, I've created this video for you.
Video referenced: • When should you use th...

I’ve had a Hot Rod for 6 months and had no idea that the pre-amp in and out were essentially an effects loop. Thank you so much!
Same here. I'm embarrassed to say I've had mine much longer.
It would've been even more helpful if he'd actually had his pedals hooked up while he was describing it but....
My dad gave me a blues deville 212 he didn't use anymore (too heavy) and I've never used the effects loop. Didn't know what it was for honestly. I've been playing for a short time. Now I know and gonna try it out. Thanks
This is the best explained FX loop on RUclips.Would love to see the same step by step explanation on four cable method.
I am big fun of your pedals. Brian.Thank you so much.
Glad to see Ned Schneebly finally found his calling
It's Schnayblay ahah
Not too many people get that I remember lol
No you're not hard core! Unless you live hardcore! And the legend of the rent was way hardcore! Schnayblay singing. bahahaha
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 yes!
At first I was like "Is this video really necessary??", then I remembered my confusion in 1985 when I first looked at the back of my Peavey Roadmaster.
My ‘93 Blues Deluxe and various petals told me to thank you. My gear talks and reminded me that I knew about this process when I was a kid before I became a so-called professional. Appreciate you keeping it simple for someone who still sometimes has trouble “taking direction.” Great video, exemplary circuits. Appreciate you.
I tried a Carol Ann Triptik amp. I wanted to hear it in stereo. I saw a Jet City amp nearby. So, I grabbed a TC Flashback Delay and TC Electronic stereo Reverb. I connected the Left output the TC Electroinics Reverb to the fx return (Carol Ann Triptik) and the Right input of the first effect ( TC Electronics Flashback Delay) into the Fx Send of the Carol Ann Triptik. I connected the Right Output of the TC Electronic Reverb directly to the Jet City Amp input. I didn't find an fx loop for that amp. The Carol Ann Triptik was the master and the Jet City Amp was the slave. I set the preamp as clean as possible and tried to make it flat as well. I balanced the clean level of the Jet City Amp to match the level of the Carol Ann Triptik. What was really cool was the preamp of the Carol Ann had barely any noise in the high gain channels at all. I never really tried a stereo setup that way before and it worked very well and sounded huge.
Thank you for the video. I tried this with my Carvin Vai Legacy and picked up a radio station!
That happened to me once when I was really stoned and playing guitar. Scared me bad! 🤣🤣
Your cable length may have had something to do with that, the longer the unbalanced cable the higher the chance. Picture the cable as an antenna, and keep rockin’!
Wow that’s never happened to me in my 30 years of playing lol and I use nothing less than 30 feet

THANK YOU, such a basic thing which no one explains and can get confusing. Great playing =).*
Thank you for that very clear, good, and quick explanation in laymen's language
. Great teacher! Cleared some issues I had.
very useful thank you. I'v used an H|H IC100S since the late seventies with out an effects loop. recently bought myself a small combo with an effect loop, so very useful indeed.
Been looking for this video for months. Thank you. I had my guitar plugged into the effects loop and my chorus into the input/front, then I threw up.!! Lol
THANK YOU! This really helped me figure out routing, and which was send and which was return on the Fender amp.
That cleared the fender thing up for me. Frontman 2x12. Thnx!
Thanks Brian for the example, may I suggest drawing something on a white board or on paper to help explain as well, nearly had a vertigo episode watching you walk with the camera back and forth. maybe in a future video regarding EfX's loops is "Series" and "Parallel" what is the difference and how they affect the signal chain from the Pre-amp to the output amp stage.. This might be for another day but is sometimes raised in Guitar Forums.
If anyone happens to see a piece of gear with "insert" plugs, and isn't aware, it functions as both a send and return with a 1/4 trs to 2 1/4 ts cable. You plug the trs, which has 2 rings, into the insert then the other 2 into the send and return of the effect. Just figured I'd share that randomly since I didn't know what it was for years.
I love my amps distortion, I rarely use a pedal for those tones. There's effects that I prefer after the distortion, they go into the effects loop. The only problem with this is in a series loop (most amps), the tube pre amp is now running through solid state pedals and back into the power amp and it ruins the tone of the amp. I use an amp with a parallel effects loop with a blend knob (or have it modified to include one), this way the amp's signal path is preserved, I can dial in the amount of effects I want.
what's interesting is that, the explanation is right on, in terms of how to use an FX loop - but at the end of the vid where he's playing, the signal is still running through all of the pedals and nothing is in the FX loop. You can tell, because the output of the euphoria is going into the input of the tape echo with a short patch cable... There is no 4 cord setup there...
i am soo confused. I am trying to find someone on youtube who can explain all this because i have tried it without connecting the dirt pedal and the echo doing what he said, and nothing in the effects loop work, only whats in the front of the amp. aaaaaggghhh why cant someone make a diagram in addition to the explanation!
You had me at Love Removal Machine! (If that's what song you were playing at the beggining) Love your videos!
Hi. The Peavey Bandit has FX in / out in the front AND power amp in/pre amp out in the back. Is it the same?!
sliced Christ on toast 😳
I love the visual confusion over the cable motif carpet
No, I didn’t get any nausea
Excellent video
Now you've done it. Created a monster. Now that I understand it..all that happened was I got introduced to another money pit lol
Are there special cables wee need for the fx loop or regular guitar cables fine?
I got my FX loop up and running. Regular guitar(Instrument) cables are fine.
What are some amps that has effect loops under $200 ??
what about if its a multi effects pedal that has distortion, as well as phaser, delay, reverb, flanger...etc. would it be best on the front of the amp using 2 cables or through the effect loop using 3 cables?
It goes in front. Your amp is just a speaker.
Good question
I use a four cable setup using the effects loop on my amp, and the “insert” section (send/return) on my effects unit. This way I can use the overdrive in my preamp, and still not send my delay/reverb into the overdrivena preamp. It works with my vox tonelab, your setup may not work this way. Here’s my path:
Guitar to effects unit (as normal)
Effect unit “send” to amp input (dirty preamp)
Amp “send” back to multi effects unit “insert return”
Effects unit main out back to amp “return”
I tried a three cable version first, guitar to amp/sent to unit/back to amp return, but I didn’t have as good of a signal.
This gives me the dirty preamp as my base sound, then I add the effect board pedal od as a boost, and the mod effects aren’t re-dirtied up. It was easiest to get a good unity gain for me. I’m always trying to get it figured out.
Look up 4 cable effects unit on RUclips, they explain it better than I did.
Dude. I’m in disbelief lmao been plugging in my stuff wrong. Thank you so much, I have more questions if you don’t mind answering as well
I have a Supro amp with pre amp out and power amp in jacks. I asked Supro if I could use them as an effects loop and they replied with “The Pwr amp in and preamp out can not be used as an effects loop”.
As far as I can tell pre amp out is not the same as effects send and isn’t meant to be used that way. The voltages are different and the signal path is different. Pre amp out is meant to send a signal to another amp or recording gear
Very strange. Those terms are not exclusive though- effects loop send, by definition is indeed a preamp output. And same with power amp in/effects return. However, my guess is that their input and output are not buffered and not set up in such a way to work well with guitar pedal effects, which would make their statement kind of accurate- with that particular amp it might sound terrible with pedals in that loop.
@@wampler_pedals Thanks for the reply. I checked the Supro Delta King manual. It’s a line out, not Pre Amp out. Here’s what it says:
LINE OUT
The Line Out provides a buffered preamp output to another amplifier or to a console for recording.
POWER AMP INPUT
The Power Amp input provides a direct injection point for the 6L6 power amplifier in the Delta King 12. Plugging into this jack interrupts the connection between the preamp and power amp, allowing players to use different preamps or modeling hardware to achieve an unlimited variety of tones while still enjoying the Class-A warmth of the Delta King tube power section.
Gotcha. That means it will be too hot for pedals most likely.
A little Cult. Very nice.
Love removal!
"Check this one....!!!" :)
BABY BABY BABY BABY BABY!
I have a hot rod deluxe 4, and I'm getting a terrible loud hum when I try this set up. What am I missing? I've tried reversing the cables, but to no avail.
Ive watched 5 videos what about the BOOST on the pedal how does that work is there s setting on the amp that is turned higher on the amp to switch to the boost just bought a origin 20 brand new had this pedal
Ive been trying to use the ME90 with an Invective MH head using the 4 cable method but when i do its like the ME90 takes away volume functionality on my head.
I have a fender FM212R amp. Then I have a : tuner , vox , blues breaker , fuzzface , Clapton Crossroads & loop pedal . What's the best order for them ? Thanks🤙
I have a Digitech RP 7 what is best way to hook up to Fender Twin reverb and Peavey Classic 2x12
what about running an EQ threw the loop?
How about this? Guitar to tuner, to Fuzz face, to Wah, to Compressor, to Fatboost, to front of amp. SEND from back amp to Phase 90, to Harmonist, to Analog Chorus, to Analog delay, to Digital delay, to Return on back of amp? Does this sound correct, and also the correct order of pedals? I heard it is better to Fuzz the Wah, not Wah the Fuzz. Should I Fatboost right after the Fuzz also, before Wah? I heard Delays and Reverbs always go last. Since my amp has Reverd, and tons of gain, I dont go with Reverb pedals, or heavy Distortion pedals. What to do here? This is for a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL combo.
Would you use a Phase 90 in an FX loop? Or run it before the amp?
+Luke Booker before amp, not in effects loop
I plugged a mxr cc and mxr m300 to my hotrod deluxe mark 4 pre/power and the result was really horrible swirly noise and buzzing, although it works while playing
Yeah! Very well explained! Thanks!
So all your modulations can be placed in the power amp out and in while your drives etc go into the amp as before?
I have a 5 watt Randall Diavlo 5C. Sounds great. The speaker is a Celestion Ten Thirty. Would it be safe to use something in the fx loop like an EHX 22 amp to produce greater volume? Or will this harm the loop circuit?
You csn also connect your Helix into it as well.
i like the effect but is it normal to notice the amp hissing louder connected this way??? im just talking about while not playing anything and all power on there is a noticeable increase in noise coming from amp.
So help me out here. I have a wah, delay reverb, and looper pedal. Would the wah pedal go direct into front of amp and the delay and looper pedal go only to the send/return FX loop on the back of the amp? How would I set this up so my distortion works on the amp dirt channel?
My Own mind set, tends to think any thing in the Loop is similar to being part of the Brain of the Amp ... opposed to the Amp Being fed something. Its Just the way i look at it
much clearer now - TY!
If you have a multi effects pedal just go into the effects loop?
Exactly what I needed.
Pedal to effects return vs loop (amp send to pedal to amp return)
What's the difference
show me how to hook that particular fender amp up to my GNX 3000
How would you connect more than 1 pedal to the effects loop?
I have two tube amps, one with effects loop one without. I have a EHX Grand canyon stereo output. What is the best way to set this up. right now I have it going into the front of both amps and i am not using the effects loop. I also have a EHX switchblade+ at my disposal to use. I have the equipment now i have to figure out how to use it to it's fullest capability. Any input would help.
Just think “send out / return in”
i have a Fender Frontman 212r and i plug a Vox Flat 4 boost (it has a 12ax7 valve) or a Marshall Guvnor, so the question is...
If i plug a non modulation pedal on the fx loop is dangerous for the amp?
Very helpful, got the answers, thank you
I also heard, there is a way to set up an effects loop in old amps that dont have one, with some kind of pedal that will do this..I got a Silver face Fender Twin, with no effects loop, have not ran any effects to it yet. Best way to accomplish this?
What is the difference if you use pedals through the effects loop, and if you use them through your normal guitar to input chain? And one more thing please, if I use distortion pedal, when I turn it on, should I also go from my clean channel to OD channel on my head(amp), or should I keep my gain on my clean channel on my amp?!
Thanks
Really good intro song once again!
Thank you for your explaination!
Thank you! Very clear.
No! I just got a Blues Deluxe with a effects input and I don’t use pedals much but I can’t use my Vox Wah! 😢
I know you’re familiar with the input for a pedal that’s tucked in the back. Much like my old Fender Champ from the 80’s. Now I understand the return and send and how to put a pedal in there. I checked out my Vox Wah and it’s pretty new.
Battery is fresh. Where the heck does it plug in? I’d assumed it would go in the effects input. Nope. I plugged directly into the amp and it just got louder.
Where do I plug this stupid thing in?
Thanks by the way, great video
Nice explanation! So would I connect my delay/reverb pedal to the looper pedal and then take the input of looper to the send on amp and the output of the looper to the return of the amp?
Hey, great video and clear explaining. Do you have a video on loop controllers/switches? My board is getting quite big so I'm looking for a solution to use something like the octa switch to make presets. The thing with the Oct. Switch is you would still need to have the pedals on the board because the send and return jacks are on the switch itself (if I understand this correctly). Is there a way to hide the pedals in a rack and connect them to a looper that has a switch I can then put on my board on stage?
Here's my dilemma. I have a Ceriatone JTM45 bluesbreaker amp with a passive effects loop on the back. The loop has a ridiculously high send level into any effects you maybe using. Naturally the floor pedals distort even the TC Electronic vintage delay pedal that says in the manual that it can be used with line level send. Not so, the loop distorts the pedal. Ceriatone makes a great amp but the loop is shite. Any suggestions. I have one of these Klein-u-lator boxes from Ceriatone. It's basically a Dumblelator interface for passive effects loops. Only problem is, it doesn't work very well at all with this amp. Still find It's distorting the delays that I have. Any answers?
How about if i use preamp pedal, because i dont want use preamp from head....
How about the sequence??
My question is: is preamp output line level? If so, wouldn't it be necessary to run a preamp before sending the signal to the pedal? I know some modern pedals can handle line inputs, but what if they don't? And also, could I damage the pedal?
Hey man I need help...I use a cybertwin se with the cyber footcontroller and it's great. Recently I've added some external stomp boxes and my biggest fears came true. My rig is now noisy as hell. I have a digitech whammy DT, an analog delay, a phase and a flange. Is it cuz I cheaped out and went with joyo pedals? Is it the order I have them in ? Should I use the amp loop ? If so what would b the proper order?
Let's say i wanna use amt "E1 preamp" pedal with boss katana (got both send & return in fx loop) but i still wanna keep overdrive and noise gate from katana is this possible?
Of all the amps to use . . . . . you couldn't use one with the send and return in the back of the amp ? ?
once again thank you bud
Thanks for all your videos, Brian! :-) Any chance you will do more videos on modding pedals, and breadboarding? I'm especially curious about how you make a blend control, like on the Hot Wired :-)
Hi!your video is awesome to understand!!I'm wondering if there is any other kind of effects that I can connect into to loop with delay effect?
I still don't see why,i have my guitar into aby,a is a Cerberus into trio plus,b is noise ,comp, into looper that feeds electro harmonix pedals then out through memory man delay, and ocean 11 revevrb,so whats wrong with that, why use effects send instead of b channel
When you went into the Strymon you went into the left out(example)if i wanted to take the right output from the Strymon, to another Amps send, what do i do with the return from the 2nd amp, ?as there is only one input on the strymon, i am using 2 amps via an AYB box all connected as you suggest gains ,overdrives, in the front modulations in the fx loops your advice please?Thank you
Rock Writer You wouldn’t want to connect an output (send) to another send. You could connect the left output of a pedal to one amp and the right output to the effects return of second amp, and on most amps it would just bypass the preamp of the 2nd amp.
Is it possible to run a single effects loop in stereo using trs to 2ts jacks?
Once your signal goes through the preamp stage, does it need a buffer in the loop?
Hi Brian, I have a question.. let's say i have 2 combo amps with serial fx loop on both of them... Amp 1 has celestion Vtype and amp 2is using creamback.. let say they are have the same wattage (20W), same output impedance 16ohm. Do you think its ok for me to take send on amp 1 put to return amp 2 to get creamback speaker sound.. and send amp 2 to return amp 1 for getting vtype cab sound. Am I going to break anything here? Or it would be fine? One of the the reason why i want to do this is because one of my amp has attenuator than can bring to 0.something wattage so i can play without waking up my baby.. 😅 i know this is an old video but i hope somehow u can help me.. thank you very much!!!
If I understand correctly I think so, but may be easier and better off just running speaker cable from the amp with the attenuator to the cabinet which has the creamback.
@@wampler_pedals very cool! thanks much
Seems like i could soon need a buffer in the fx loop if there much distance, am i thinkin rt ?
Question: I have an old (like, 1993 I think? silver stripe) Peavey Bandit 112 with a Send/Return FX loop on the front that can be bypassed using the footswitch, but on the back of the amp, there is another FX loop (Preamp-out/poweramp-in). I don't know if it is related to the front loop. any thoughts?
What does the Peavey Bandit manual say?
You should make another video using a multieffects pedal with stomp boxes added to the chain. I had mine set up but I forgot how to do it.
Good Video, Good tone as well! I use the BOSS ME-80 Multieffects board with a TC Electronic Ditto Looper..
My amp; Hot Rod Deville. Guitar ---> Multi-effects processor ---> Looper -----> to the (input) of the
DeVille.. Is that correct? I haven't messed with the other inputs/outputs on my amp and I have
a couple extra instrument cables..
The term effects loop, your talking specifically about an individual stompbox. (most likely delay)
is what I gather from this video..
What about a looper. It works the way everythings hooked up now just fine however;.. what about going "out" from the pre-amp out ------> Looper ------> power amp in? Or wouldn't there be any benifits from how
its hooked up now? I've had my amp a long time! I've had it re-tubed 3 times :-) Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. Rock on!
Your tone is crazy good. No disrespect i have not heard of wampler pedals before. Where to purchase?
Thanks! Here’s a link: www.wamplerpedals.com/dealers/
What i'm struggling to get my head around is this....What about those multi effect floor units such as a vox tonelab se plugged into the loop? If you're not supposed to use distortion/overdrive in an effects loop, what is one supposed to do if you want a driven sound from your floor unit? Use a separate drive pedal in the front of the amp?
***** Wow thanks for the rapid reply, i appreciate that mate.
Thanks for your advice. I think I might sell the vox now and just get something smaller. I've never tried any of your pedals but they sound good so I'll ask at my local music shop here in England and see if they stock any Wamplers..
Send(ing) a signal to search for a time based effect(s) then Return(ing) said signal to loop is how I’ve always kept it straight in the EL.
wow my 94 wine red studio is the same except i have silver tunners and ebony fret board and ps i love that cult song . jam it all the time! enjoy your vids cool guy too rock out man i have the hot rod deluxe too
yeah. same here. 87 wine red studio. had to replace the tuners a while back. ebony fretboard. i have a hot rod deville 410. great to hear you're still rocking. peace.
is the tape echo and dirt pedal connected to each other?
can u run a wireless unit to a pedal train?
Question!
I have a Boss ES5 Switcher, how would this be run through an effects loop?
Thanks! Send into the front of the pedal chain, return to the output of the pedal chain!
Is it safe to run pedals with instrument level inputs and outputs through an FX loop?
After tons of videos and buying one I still don’t know where to plug in my GT5. Lol. Preamp foot switch I’m guessing not the effects loop
LOVE Removal,Love removal ma-chiiiiine.Get it ooooo-oo-on.Love remoooval ma-chiiine.
Yooooo we got the same guitarrr
Hey B-man! I know I know I know this particular vid is 3 years old.....but that’s how good you are bud, I’m always referring to your knowledge! My question is this.....I have a Hot Rod Deluxe iii and I run all my effects in to the front of the amp. I do not use the FX Loop BECAUSE I only use the CLEAN channel.... is my thinking correct or should I still use the Loop?
Thanks! You should be just fine doing it that way. The only exception is if you are turning your volume up so much that it is distorting, then I would use the loop in that case
I just owned this Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp and I was trying to find a line out source for recording or PA extension. I tried to plug into the Pre amp out and it worked! I just want to know if this is safe for both the amp and PA?
Safe yes but you need a cabinet modeler of some sort. I highly recommend the two notes CAB, or any impulse response loader
What I want to know how to do is how to plug my foot pedal which is an RP360XP into a head of a stack without using the heads tone. How do I bypass the tone of the amp and just use the tone of my pedal?
David Abbatangelo With some amps you can plug directly into the return or power amp in from your pedal.
The only question in my mind is whether the signal from the Send/Pre-amp out is okay for any pedal, or if some pedals are not designed to work well in an effects loop. :)
Generally, it's not a problem. However, amp builders make different kinds of effect loops. Some are buffered and therefore handle pedals really well, others are not buffered but still work with most pedals. Others can have a fairly "hot" signal coming from them and it may make the pedal distort a bit, but it shouldn't hurt it.
Is it bad to connect fuzz pedals into the effects loop?
can i hook up a tube screamer in the effect loop?
It won’t hurt anything if that’s what you’re asking
Hey man can you tell me if I need to have stereo 1/4 inch for my blues deluxe reissue pre-out power-in? Getting a lot of noise going through mono inputs of tc electronic flashback 2 and strymon bigsky. Trying to fix the problem...
I do too with my fender deluxe and i get a ton of hum/noise, rendering it useless. :(. Did your stereo cabels help in this??
Thanks
Tqvm sir😊😊😊😊
How would I use the FX loop if I wanted to use the drive that's from my amp instead of a distortion pedal?
Use it the same way
