To be fair, you say voters made the decision, but several primaries (such as mine) were canceled or only had Biden as the option. We didn't ALL actually have a say.

Why is Sam asking about First Past the Post?
House elections have the same system.
Because some systems require a majority and if that fails there's a top-two runoff followup

I guess it's just the US doesn't call it "First Past the Post". Also the US doesn't have third parties acting as spoilers and protest votes. Yet.

@@farhadchaudhry In California we actually have an electoral system more similar to France. Unlike other states, there is a primary for all candidates regardless of party affiliation, and the top two finishers compete in the general election. In effect, it is a two round runoff system, except that there is no majority threshold for the first round. Several states also have runoff elections if no candidate wins a majority in the general or primary election.

The 2024 UK election has proved again that First-past-the-post allocates seats in parliament in a mutated, lottery-like arbitrary fashion that has only the slimmest relation to the will of the voters. Either a constituency seat is very safe for one party, in which case votes cast for the others don't count for a bean. Or the seat is won marginally, in which case, inevitably, the majority of constituents vote against the winning party than for it. This election was particularly distorted. Just one fifth of the electorate voted for the party to which the system allocated two-thirds of the seats. It's a regular Hall of Mirrors and most Brits walk through it with their eyes closed.
Re Emma's comment on Parliamentary systems, I agree. As an Australian, I love our system. Plus, we have preferential voting, so every vote counts. And, we have compulsory voting so "the get out to vote" noise isnt a factor, as we have to get out.
The shoveling of the shit back into the horse is getting frantic and frenetic. If they spent half as much effort into backing a new candidate that WON'T lose to Trump the election wouldn't be a problem.
As Owen pointed out about the Labour Party in the UK the Democrats sold out the working class decades ago, following the setting up of the Trilateral commission under Carter. As Biden said to his donors before the 2020 election, nothing will fundamentally change, a promise he did keep. Which shows you where the allegiance of both parties reside. So if beating Trump is the only objective, that's a pretty sad indictment of the miserable state of US democracy.

Yeah, I wish. The Democrats WANT to lose to help their fundraising, can't even deny that anymore. This election convinced me, we need to quit watching our tv's my lazy self needs to quit commenting on RUclips and get people to hit the streets because this election and Shawn Fain has shown me, electoral politics WILL NOT save any of us. Want real change? Doesn't happen from a RUclips comments section or in a studio, you have to fight for it and let the powerful know we are DONE with this status quo. The people are just too comfortable right now. Hate to say it, it will take something like Trump or another Republican axing all of our rights and making us a military dictatorship for the necessary numbers to wake up and realize elections are USELESS.
