- Why did I play P5R a second time..? One word: Akechi. ....also kinda for Maruki too. This is NG+!
SPOILERS IN VIDEO. I don't recommend watching if you haven't played through the entire game.
This video is Part 3 of the 2nd Playthrough and the final part!
It's a mix of both streaming clips and offline recordings since this is more of a personal thing to play through this game another time ;-; I'm finishing up the Confidant stories I never got to finish, get my Platinum Trophy, and focus on a lot of things I just straight up missed in my first playthrough.

The fact that Akechi is self-aware during the third semester proves that he's real. If he had been brought back to life by Maruki, he'd behave just like all the other characters, blissfully unaware.

I think what also helps that argument is the bad ending where Akechi will change to fit in with Maruki’s world. Which means that Maruki could not have brought him back because he would have brought back a version that is similar in personality to the bad ending. Not to mention if you have Akechi in your party when Maruki is trying to reason he will get dialogue from Maruki about atoning and accepting the reality. If he was a cognitive being Maruki would have no reason to try to convince him.

Hoshi (Akechi's Japanese VA) & Robbie (Akechi's English VA) are both great Akechi actors, they are both valid.
If I had a penny for each time I heard Hoshi Shoichiro voicing a two-faced guy with the exact same two voices, I'd have 3 pennies, which isn't that much but it's weird it has happened 3 times.
There are probably more, which makes it funnier.

It's more likely than not that Akechi is alive. Aside from the apparently removed scene, there's also the fact that when you told all the other PT that they were in a false reality, their cognitions faded away. Wakaba disappeared, Morgana turned back into a cat etc. Since we know Akechi's life is Akira's wish, he should have faded away at least the moment we made the decision to fight Maruki. He says he can't remember anything after Shido's palace, but that could be explained in a number of ways including the fact that our enemy is a dude who can manipulate minds and erase memories.

THIRD SEMESTER AKECHI is what made me love Akechi as a whole character. I liked him before but his abrupt ending always was like eh. I like English Haru more than Japanese because she is one of my favourite voice actors.
It's crazy, too, because English Haru and Japanese Haru sound very similar. Their voices for her are in the exact same range. Japanese Ann sounds similar to English Ann, too, even in terms of delivery a lot of the time.

10:47 To actually dispel Maruki's "reality", the person has to realize that their cognition was being changed. Futaba and Haru realized and moved on after realizing, believing that it was a betrayal to their bonds with Joker (check their Rank 11, or their speech to unlock their 3rd Tier Persona).
Joker, however, decided to hold on, just for 1 more big fight. He literally held on until he couldn't.
@DeadMemes NeedToStayDead That's wrong. A lot of people know things, but will actively deny it. Anyways, my main point is that realizing something doesn't mean that someone is ready to move on. A lot of people grieve for a long time when their family members die, but can't move on for a long time. They realize that the person is dead, since they're grieving, but they can't move on with their lives.
I'd like to think that majority of Ren's cognition hasn't been changed since he's actively fighting against it, but not the same can be said about Akechi's situation. If that unused ending (Akechi in rehab) was actually in the game, then I'd jump ship and accept that the real Akechi was with us during the 3rd Semester. However, with the given ending, to me, Akechi is dead and Ren knew this, and grasped whatever he could to get Akechi his ending.
This makes sense for the most part, but Akira and Morgana knew on Feb. 2nd in the game that Akechi wasn't real. So if knowing Akechi wasn't real, he should have disappeared immediately form their cognition, but he didn't. Both Akechi and Maruki confirmed he was dead in reality, so it should have changed their cognitions.

I think if he was really dead than we would have found him. But after he disappeared, everyone just speaks as if he disappeared, not like he is dead. Idk but I believe he is alive after shiso palace and akechi in the third semester is the real one.

In my own opinion, one of the strongest pieces of evidence for Akechi being real is that he's still there after Maruki hints at him actually being dead. I mean. After the rest of the Phantom Thieves realize they're living in a manufactured world their desires disappear. We can speculate this based on the fact that Morgana is suddenly a cat again and Futaba's mother isn't present. So we can justifiably hypothesize that when they realize it's not real, the desire shatters, and in turn, Maruki can no longer maintain it. Therefore, we can assume that after Joker realizes that Akechi isn't real, he should reasonably disappear. But he doesn't. It can be argued this is because Akechi isn't a manifestation of Joker's desires specifically, he's being maintained by Maruki and therefore wouldn't disappear. But the same can be said of the rest of the thieves since Maruki made their desires not based on what he found in Mementos (since they don't have shadows) but based on what they said during their sessions. Additionally, it seems as Maruki's powers work based on a similar principle to the former god of control was bound by. He answers the prayers and wishes of shadows. Not people, but shadows. Yaldy would have no control if the shadows didn't wish to be controlled. Since Maruki's actualization was inherited from this original concept, we can take an educated guess that his powers work on a similar grounds, and even though the thieves don't have shadows anymore, he was tapping into their innate wishes to actualize them. In turn, for Akechi to have been produced Joker would have had to wish for it in some facet (since he's the only one who would have wished for it if we're being honest) and he would have, in turn, had to have disappeared after Joker was told that Akechi is an actualization.
Of course, I could be entirely off base. With that said, I do think that this does strongly point towards the idea that at the end of the game Akechi through some miracle managed to survive (though I couldn't even begin to tell you how, which in turn is probably the most damning piece of evidence against him being alive since even he's not sure how he lived). This is written ignoring the unused piece of code where Akechi is confirmed to be alive since, being unused and not mentioned in any other official works (like spin-offs or art books) I don't consider it to be canon.
What if we look at it this way instead, the reason that Akechi was still around after Joker learned that he was fake comes instead from his willingness to accept that Akechi was gone. If we make the concession that the assumed reason people like Wakaba ceased to exist immediately upon said character coming to the understanding that they are dead is false we have more room for freedom. Why did these changes happen, because these characters stopped wishing for them, or because they had accepted the other world for what it was? While Joker is a silent protagonist, he does have some characterization. He doesn’t want Akechi to disappear (looking at his dialogue options on the night before the battle with Maruki) his declaration that he wanted to finish what he started with Akechi when the bulkhead closed etc. we can ask ourselves, “did Joker want to accept the fact that Akechi was gone?” Given the fact that you have the option of accepting Maruki’s world until the final night, I would say no. Despite agreeing to change the world back to the way it was, that doesn’t mean that Joker personally agreed with the decision to any large degree. I think that it wasn’t until much later on that Joker accepted the world for what it was. I’ve left an comment directly on this video somewhere, but I believe that the train window scene is when we see Joker truly accept the world for what it is, and that even though Goro is gone, he is still alive through Joker’s character (Akechi had a great deal of influence on Joker) and in his memories. In sum, if we alter the reason for which the characters disappeared slightly, we can clear up why Goro was allowed to stay until after the fist fight with Maruki. Destroying Adam kadmon started the collapse of Maruki’s universe so from the point on the disappearance of Akechi was set in stone as it was Joker exhausted his last opportunity to take Maruki’s side (and even then just because we do things does not necessarily mean we agree with them, or want something to happen). I believe Akechi was allowed to go on existing until the end of Maruki’s universe because Joker was doing what he was out of a sense of duty/obligation rather than because he actually wanted to do it.

Then, he used whatever power let him sneak up on the crew at the beginning of the scene and earlier to get to Okumura, to mask his surviving presence from Futaba.
The reason Joker still went to juvie in vanilla P5 and after the reality shift when Maruki lost is because Akechi only decided to turn himself in because he caught wind of Maruki's influence on the world. Rewriting events such that Maruki doesn't sieze the Mandate of the People from the Phantom Thieves means Akechi doesn't notice it and decides to stay under the radar.
This theory maintains vanilla P5 and Royal continuity, leaving vanilla as the canon series of events that were reverted to after the reality shift, but with the Phantom Thieves (and Akechi (and Maruki)) keeping their memories of the Royal timeline.
Akechi could have survived: he has the nav too. He literally could have escaped by leaving Shido's Palace via the nav. Everyone literally forgets this...
I'm late on this but whatever- what if you don't die when a palace collapses? The game states that you do a lot but nobody actually dies, and by that logic Ryuji really should've died on Shido's ship as he never got to the exit. I doubt Akechi would leave willingly, he seemed very ready to die, so even if he could've gotten out I doubt he would've, but if this is true then he would've survived anyway.
I think the most damning piece of evedence against him is that Futaba lost his reading. I doubt the explanation Probably Facetious gave since I don't know why Akechi would try hiding himself, he seemed very ready to die so why would he bother?
I also think Kumagawa Misogi's comment is another very valid interpretation, I could also see that being the case.

Akechi is alive! The reason he wasn't there with the others is because he was at a rehab after the events of Shido's place. There was a scene hidden in the code that proved he lived. Faz had translated into English.

If it’s not in the game, then it’s probably not canon. That’s like saying Yosuke in Persona 4 is 100% gay even though his voice lines for dating you went unused. I still think Akechi is alive though.

The cut rehab scene is acually a very important key element for answering these questions:
Why is Akechi alive?
Why cant Akechi remember what happened after the shots in the engine room?
Why does Maruki not know what happend to Akechi afterwards as well?
My theory is the fellowing, bear with me just as you beared with Teddy:
*Engine Room Incident:*
Akechi survives, how is debateable but i strongly lean towards the idea that he stayed stuck the whole time until the PTs fight Shido and the palace collapses.
We know from Mona's imprisonment in Kamoshida's Castle that the "worst" thing that can happen to you in a palace is to get stuck in it and we know from Ryuji's Explosion flight that palace have acual borders to reality so using the app to escape is not needed if you can reach that border and/or that dying just kicks you out of the palace.
Ryuji himself doesnt know if he died, he got blasted away and the next thing he knew is waking up in grass near the diet building.
So Akechi fights the shadows and his cognition, gets downed (ingame mechanic: 0HP but nobody reveives/heals him) and stays there in the locked up area until PT's sunk the ship.
I doubt his own Cognition would let him go that easily if death means being kicked out of a palace, he would prevent it. Shido does think of him as a smart yet blinded dog afterall.
Remember where all the Palace Ruler go after thier palace collapses?
*Christmas Heist, december 24th:*
He and Shadow Shido land in Mementos. Yaldy most likely imprisions both, Shido in the community cell and Akechi, as a Persona User, gets the solitary confinement treatment so nobody finds him and he cant use the other shadows to escape/kill them. In his weakend state he would also not be able to resist, maybe his Cognition acually kicked him unconscious and he is taking a well deserved metaverse nap.
Stuck since December 18th in Mementos, he escapes on Christmas when the PTs strick Yaldy down. At the exact same moment, Maruki gains his power and before Akechi could make a single move, he is place on the Plaza to met Akira.
*3rd Semester:*
Maruki, who never met Akechi and had a talk about his wish/problem, does only know him from Akira.
Like Futaba & Wakaba, Haru & her Father, Ann & Shiho, Maruki seems to need something from the wishmaker to make a wish real in his reality. For common people, he just uses thier Shadows in the Metaverse who can just walk in his Palace and get brainwashed, but Persona-Users dont have Shadows so he cant do that to the PTs and Akechi.
It seems like talking to him and open your heart to him (i mean, he is a therapist, you do that when you have a therapy session) does the trick. Via Akira he got access to what happend in the Engine Room & his connection to Akechi, Akira could only avoid being brainwashed with the help of the blue Butterfly (Lavenza/The Twins) but that is enough to learn what he needed to blackmail Akira into possible accepting his reality as well.
*Reality is back!:*
Just like how Akira doesnt know he is acually in jail during the time 3rd Semester happends, Akechi doesnt know he is in the rehab center to repay a debt there.
Both events happend the day after Christmas (December 25th), Akechi seemingly appeared out of thin air without and appointment (the cut rehab scene shows his dialog and he seems unsure how he came there even when it was just a month ago) and Sae takes Akira to confess about Shido.
They both just ARE there suddenly when time moves forward normally again (February 4th) in the original reality.
tl;dr: Akechi didnt got killed, just got a forcefull naptime, Yaldy imprisoned him while he is napping, Maruki frees him and places him like a pawn on his chess board to take Akiras place to happy jail time. thats why neither Akechi/Maruki remember the fuck happend between Engine Room & Christmas/December 24th.
Akechi is alive, Akechi is real and acually got a well rested buff!

Here's a theory, after the battle with Akechi in Shido's Palace the cognitive version was only able to critically wound Akechi making him go unconscious possibly erasing the signal so Futaba couldn't know if he was alive or not. He may have some how been able to escape the collapse of Shido's Palace and possibly been hospitalized while the Phantom Thieves weren't aware. Since the thieves thought Joker thought Akechi was dead, Maruki's reality made it so that he seemed alive and well. But in reality, he was just hospitalized during the entire 3rd semester.
That's entirely possible. He'd then receive a second set of memories from the alternate reality after the fact
See, i think it's likely that akechi can simply exit the metaverse whenever. He was able to escape okumuras palace even though the thieves had only barely made it, and they had the mona car. So, he might've just left the metaverse before his doppelganger could kill him and then gone into hiding

That is a potential theory, yeah. Either that, or collapsing palaces don't actually kill you, but rather simply boots you out. Not like we've tested it, haha

I already had a discussion on if dying in the metaverse actually kills you (we arrived at the conclusion that it does due to the precedent of the tv world, which is basically inabas mementos), but collapsing palaces is a different question entirely. Assuming that you can only leave the metaverse from a specific location, the thieves would've had to notice ryuji when they left shidos palace, as he would've had to leave through the same location. What if he didn't actually leave, but was booted out anyways because the palace disappeared? Sadly, the details of how to leave the metaverse are never elaborated on in p5. We do know how leaving jails works, as we've seen the portals in cutscenes, but for palaces, that seems unlikely. We've never seen an exit portal in a palace (as far as i know) and if it did work like that, the thieves would've been unable to leave shidos palace as they weren't on the ship anymore. It's all really vague.
Oh, btw, the metaverse death = real death thing is part of why i believe akechi to be alive. The way the tv world works is that if you die in it, your corpse is spat back out, and akechis corpse would 100% be found and make headlines. Granted, the tv world might work differently from palaces, but considering that both are manifestations of the collective subconscious, comparing them doesn't seem too far-fetched.
I’m being 100% honest when I say that I’d pay SO MUCH MONEY just to be able to date Akechi I might even settle for just more Akechi/Ren scenes because those are also super gay.

I love them both, but if u let me only choose one, I prefer the Japanese sub slightly more, cause they have much more emotion. Of course, English dub is also good too, cause it's interesting to listen to and some of the lines are pretty funny or emotional. Of course, that's my opinion.

The only voice that bothers me in English is Sumire, and it's not even her performance but one word, senpai. I hate how she says senpai in English to the point of switching over to the Japanese dub. It's a shame and incredibly nitpicky considering how good the English dub is.

Further evidence that Akechi survived; when every other member of the Phantom Thieves realized that they were under Maruki’s influence and that the dead people walking around were supposed to be dead and not walking around, the dead people went back to dead. However, Akechi was still there even after we were told that he was dead. Therefore, we can surmise that Akechi actually did survive the seventh palace, and was just moved from wherever he was after the palace stuff and thrown in Maruki’s fantasy world. In this essay I will-

Damn I legitimately have a much greater appreciation for Akechi's character after watching this whole series and made me realize how truly well written he is and how sophisticated his layers are. I didn't feel much for him in the OG, and I did like him substantially more in Royal, but this series probably made him a top 3 character for me personally, along with Maruki and Ann (who as you said, is criminally underrated).
I think it would be thematically better if Akechi remained dead. The point of rejecting Maruki’s ideal reality is that in doing so you are accepting the real world and all of its flaws. With that acceptance, you strive for whatever you possibly can without relying on the power of another. The death of Akechi is Joker’s regret and likewise part of his characterization. Akechi’s existence in Maruki’s world works to show that Joker truly did value the time he spent with Akechi and that he wants to be able to see him again. When you actively choose to fight Maruki, Joker has realized that he cannot let the past hold him back anymore, just as the other thieves realized that they could not let their regrets hold them back as well. Looking at the after credits scene, a glimpse of someone that appears to be Akechi is shown through the train window; through that same window we see an image of Joker in his phantom thief attire. Throughout the game we have seen that the phantom thieves have given Joker a place to which he could belong. Looking at the elective bad endings we see the reputation of the phantom thieves restored as well as their ascent to further glory in the deal ending. In the Maruki ending, we see the cast still together taking the photo on graduation day and in the Leblanc some time later. We can see that his status as a phantom thief and his relationships are very important to him. Back to the train window, I see it as a way to see inside of Joker’s soul. His desires (there is 3rd semester distortion present during this sequence). Joker closing the window shows his acceptance of the facts that he will neither see Goro again nor be a phantom thief and signifies that he too is not letting his past and his own desires get in the way of the natural progression of the world. I’d write more but I am worried that I am near the character limit on a comment. I can talk more in replies if anyone so desires. Thank you for reading what I had to say.

Personal headcannon re: Akechi after he closes the bulkheads in Shido's ship: either back in the Casino, or in a box in one of the /many/ palaces he's been in that we never see in game; Akechi either palmed a Goho-M off the party, or found a stash of them himself. Because he saw his plans were failing (since he couldn't defeat the Thieves) he knew he had to make them think he was dead so that they wouldn't search for him - so he blocks line of sight and, after letting his cognitive copy get a round off, activates the Goho-M.
After all, the Thieves had /just/ pulled a fake death stunt on him; they'd never suspect him to turn the same ruse back on them. =3
New comment for old video but: to me the best evidence Akechi is alive is that he shows up on December 24. No one comes back from the dead before January 1. The only thing Maruki can do before the new year is subtly influence behaviors and fortunes… like, say, Akechi showing up to that spot in Shibuya at the exact right moment. Maruki just doesn’t have the power to actualize dead people back into the world yet.

Uh, this is the real, genuine Akechi? I thought it was obvious. In the 1/9 phone call with him he states that the other revived people like Wakaba and Okumara are the sincere, actual people instead of illusions or cognitive beings because Maruki's power allows him to overwrite their deaths, so in his reality they never even died. No different for Akechi.

I don't really know how you guys tell if japanese voices sound better, I don't understand a word. If you guys like the Japanese version is ok, but with I personally will stay with the English cast.
@@ellisbros6355 it sounds more raw when it comes from a Japanese product(anime, jrpg etc). Typically more closer to the source material and also the voice direction is more refined and focused. it might take a bit getting used to, and understanding how to extrapolate the quality but once you do in my opinion it’s hard to go back once you see the professionalism and perfect alignment with that vision.

In my opinion, I think it has to be that Akechi did indeed survive and lied to Joker about being “dead”. Remember that he wished that things would be different, not “I wish for Akechi to be alive”. So yeah he probably survived. He still should go to jail though lol.
I have watched the third semester and ending of Royal 3 different times in the last month I am so fascinated with this game’s world and characters
Hoshi Shoichiro, Akechi's Japanese voice actor, voices quite a few two-faced guys. I personally know like 2 more besides Akechi. I really adore the scale of his voice, even though he always uses exact same range with these type of characters.
My theory behind Akechi not disappearing like Wakaba and Okumura is that he realized that he was brought back simply for Joker's happiness.
Hence why he is so stagnant about returning to the true reality. He'd rather be dead than be forcibly brought back to life for the sake of someone else, even if that someone was the one person he saw value in.

interesting that you liked the jp ver better - i played the game in japanese (text and all) and prefer the japanese VA up to 3rd sem, then had a real disconnect to 3rd semester akechi in terms of acting. i felt like robbie built a clearer "bridge" between the two different sides of him (he must´ve worked with other motivations than jp actor i assume) which made me feel him much more. but i definitely understand what you saw in the performance in this scene - powerful either way!
I think it would be really cool if in P6 Akechi appears as a dweller in the velvet room. As some sort of redemption in the eyes of Igor.

I feel like akechi lived the engine room and the akechi we see in the third semester is merely a version of "Akechi" born from the cognition of people around him. It makes sense for a whole new "Akechi" to exist due to the fact that everyone thinks he is in fact dead. Plus, Akechi acts like how he did during the black mask boss fight, even though it's supposed to be him using his persona's power to drive people psychotic on himself during that fight. And sadly, we do not get to fulfill our promise to akechi.
Due to akechi reaching rank 10 after the engine room doors close, its also not too far fetched to say he awakened a new persona, possibly Hereward, based upon the fact that every other party member gains their second persona upon rank 10.
But also, it could be that the akechi we see in the third semester is real. Possibly the reason why we dont see him until the train scene after maruki's palace is because their deal is over and he moves on, alone from the rest.

I think the Akechi being alive theory is heavily dependent on which ending you get.
When a wild card (or persona user?) dies, they’re sent to the velvet prison in the world of cognition. In the original ending, you destroy the world of cognition. In Royal, it’s never destroyed. Akechi likely managed to escape the velvet prison some time after the Jaldy battle, though I feel like Akechi shown immediately after is a cognitive/fake Akechi. Likely when he managed to escape he took the place of cognitive Akechi.
When Maruki’s reality ended Akechi was probably caught somewhere between, or hell, knowing him he could have come out fine then immediately left to live life on his own terms.
I gotta say on the whole Akechi alive thing, I have a few things that don’t sit right with me. On the matter of him surviving, Futaba said “nah fam his signal gone” so unless he left the metaverse on the spot, which was never said (and also joker never does that he always has to go to the entrance to leave) then idk.
As for how he stayed when Waka and Okumura didn’t, it’s pretty obvious that it was Joker’s choice whether this reality stays or not. I feel Maruki just focused on convincing Joker, who was the cause of Akechi returning, to agree with him.
The main reason I say the final scene is bullshit is that it does the same effects done when something happens in the fake reality, like when Yoshizawa’s dad calls her the wrong name and it compensates by blanking the word and going all weird for a second. I think the other world didn’t disappear yet, similarly to how mementos and reality were still connected for enough time that Maruki became the ruler.
Ultimately I think it’s kinda made to be left to interpretation, but the original game had little to no evidence, so it’s just safe to say he’s dead in my book. Still, death of the author exists, so it’s really up to interpretation.
As for the whole unused rehab thing, there’s a reason they cut it. Maybe cause it would prove hes alive when the intent was to be up to interpretation, maybe cause of some other reason. Hell, maybe it was supposed to be part of the fake reality, like the fake version of the all romance harem they cut. It’s too in the air imo.

Why akechi doesn't disappear is probably because him being dead is contested.
Shadow Akechi, is made of the idea of akechi from the people who knows him. And this akechi, only joker knows supposedly.
So when joker recognize that akechi as dead, he should have disappeared.
So that means someone else that knows akechi that way should have the idea that akechi is alive.
And shido isn't a candidate, as he thinks of akechi as a puppet.
So the only one left would be akechi himself. A real akechi that is.
Maruki is by no means omnipotent, he research the minds of others to concoct a ideal reality. A akechi going unnoticed is very possible.
Especially as he got the impression that he akechi died by reading the minds of the team.

Akechi is looking tired in some portraits during the 3tr semester, maybe that's because he knows that he is dead but he is still not acepting it which is already pretty hard. Like in Angel beats.
Man, imagine if there was a female protagonist, she would freak out.
Akechi lives either because Morgana was able to come back due to the Phantom Thieves or because there was no confirmation that Akechi even died, the dead don't get their wishes granted, the dead disappear when a wish is rejected, and I suspect that Maruki was actually just actualizing his own wish and was just giving the Phantom Thieves what he thinks they want in order to get them to accept his world. There is no way that Kasumi would be happy with Sumire dying instead and Joker would never want Akechi to take his place.
Edit: On a side note, I've been looking at MBTI personality types and Joker is an INFJ(literally known as 'the counselor') while Akechi is an INTP(he often focuses on the meaning behind things). Apparently these two types go really well together because they balance each others flaws.
