The reason Goro hates Ren is because of how Ren reacted to his circumstances. Goro and Ren have been screwed over by the same person and have the same reason to hate the world and everyone around them, they were both given the power to make a difference and save others from suffering a same fate OR punishing those who hurt them. Goro chose the latter; he was given the Wild Card, but since he had no one in his life to help him, he awakened to his power, one fueled by hatred and rage. I'm sure to some extent, Goro regrets his actions, but he knows he cannot take back what he did or how far he's come, so he keeps going, assured that he'll get the revenge he feels he deserves. On the other end is Ren: A person who awoke to his power, but, he had people in his life to help him, to keep him on the straight and narrow, besides, it's in his nature to help others (It's the catalyst to the entire game's plot to begin with). Despite everything Ren went through, all the hardships, heartaches, and turmoil, he's a stronger person because of it. He never surrendered to despair, he overcame it and became better, something Goro never did, which is what fascinated him so much and why he enjoyed his time with Ren so much. I'm sure he'd never admit it, but Ren is Goro's best (and only) friend in the entire world, and someone he looks up to greatly, even to the point that he'd die to make sure he would be able to bring down the person they both hated. You wanna know how i know? The night before you send the calling card to Sae, Goro invites you to the jazz club one last time (so he can enjoy his time with you before he's forced to pop a cap in you), when the third semester kicks off, who is the first person Goro goes to for aid? Ren, duh! Hell, when it came to deciding to live in maruki's backwards ass reality, he could have pointed a gun to Ren's head and said " *BITCH, I WON'T LIVE IN THIS FAKE REALITY. YOU BETTER NOT CHOSE THIS OVER THE ONE WE CAME FROM* ", but, he didn't do that because he trusted Ren enough to make the right call, and when the final night comes, and he confirms Ren's choice, i'm sure, deep in his heart, there was a part of him that had sorrow, but at the same time, Goro knew what he had done, who he was, and what needed to be done, and he accepted his fate like a man. He'd rather die with a sword in his hand, saying he was free to choose his own path than live a happy, fake life with his boyfri- i mean, best friend, and that is admirable. Goro himself says to Ren: " *You're the one person i refuse to lose to* ", and he meant that, 100%. He was a person who sought the affection of others, even his own father, who he hated with a passion, but he never got it from anyone, except Ren. When you tell him you're holding on to his glove after that fight, i can only imagine how moved he was, how much that warmed his heart. When he says " *After all this, that's what you have to say?* ", that's when i cried for him, because despite all he put you through, Ren valued him enough to honor the promise they made, showing Goro that there was someone out there who valued him, and , the one thing he wanted most: Acknowledged him. The reason Goro hates Joker is because he's rationalizing the choice he's making of choosing his relationship with Shido over his relationship with Joker. Thoughtbubble did a great video on this (literally a mental health expert), and it's clear that Goro doesn't inherently hate Joker, he made a choice to rationalize breaking off his relationship with Joker, choosing (in his mind) power and freedom over belonging.
2:50 fun fact, the concept of goro and makoto being siblings was tossed around early in development. that would have added a whole new dimension to their rivalry/relationship!

One thing I noted as well in my playthru is that Joker always made a point one way or another that his relationship with his confidants are just deals they made (this is most apparent in kasumi's and Maruki's) but he never even once say that with Akechi. Also in the 4th rank with Akechi, Joker is the one that opens up abt his criminal record instead of akechi asking him abt it. Ryuji had to ask him the first time, so is the time with Yusuke and Makoto (where he visibly have nervous tick by tapping his leg up and down) Edit: That line Akechi said abt "Since they have special talents, I assume their hearts must be burning with a sense of justice and duty" made me thinks that he thinks that the power to change heart is an inherent skill a Joker have bc he has a strong sense of justice just like how he has an inherent skill to break people with call of chaos bc of his immense rage and hatred. Thats why later, when he confronts you during the school festival and mona explains how to change hearts, he has that sad portrait and said "No one could've figured out that MO..." as in that he couldn't have figured that out himself before. One time during his talk with Sae, I think during fifth palace, he also have an angry portrait and said "If only I'm aware of that kind of power" in jpn idk what he said in english to be exact but that say so much abt how much he regret things (it also fit the lyric of No More What Ifs which is his theme). It was something he would have done to Shido if he could but he's stuck where he is now and he just decided to keep going with his original plan.

Another point I didn't see anyone make and you didn't say anything about is that Akechi can also be considered a Wildcard. He was given the ability by Yaldy and he has multiple Personas. However, compared to you who made connections which allowed you more than just 2 Personas, he failed to cultivate it. He only has 2 Personas, technically (his 3rd is a fusion of Loki and Robin Hood). If you think about it, Robin Hood was created solely for the Phantom Thieves, and more directly, for Joker. Just as he was Joker's Confidant, Joker was his Confidant too, but his one and only. For Robin Hood, I'm of the belief that it comes more from his childhood. It's just my view on it, I have no clue, but he grew up wanting to be a hero his mom could be proud of so I don't think it was created for Joker necessarily, but more just a true reflection of how he always wanted to be since he was a lil Goro while wielding his toy gun ;-; Regardless it's interesting to interpret! I don't usually go for joke names, as I usually find the joke runs its course long before the playthrough is over, but I will recognize "Akechi's Ass" is really funny in the context of some of those lines. And maybe fit a little too perfectly. Also shoutout to you for putting your Akechi thirst aside for a few seconds to recognize Ann being great. She doesn't always gets the respect she deserves, from the fanbase or the game. As much as I love the cast as a whole and find them very entertaining, Ann is definitely the character I would most genuinely want to spend time around in real life. And not even necessarily in the waifu sense. Everyone deserves a friend or companion like Ann.

They get their depth and day in the limelight during their main story palace and afterwards, you need to do their confidants to see more of that depth. I do wish more of their characterization and depth was carried into the main story. Still, Ann does get her side arc of getting over her grudge against Makoto. That's more than a lot of the other characters get.

Man, I was exactly like you when I first played persona 5. I hated Akechi whenever I talked to him especially after he shot me, I saw myself a lot in him and I hated it. And I never truly accepted him even at his death. I still hated him. Royal made me change that opinion since he got a confidant, and I was crying just like you were by the end of it all. This series has called me out in the best way possible. (And now I’m an Akechi kinnie lord save me)
I also see myself in Akechi, but while I do think he is a well-written and interesting character I do not like him because he was not strong enough to rise above his father and instead turned to murdering people. When I was a child, my biggest goal was to not become like my father who made my childhood so miserable. Therefore I don't approve of the road Akechi chose
I actually hated my dad so much, I wanted to frame him for suicide. Granted, my dad was super abusive to me. He married my mother for 2 years only to take custody of me and then leave my mother for a bipolar woman that hated my guts.
I gotta admit - Akechi might be a character I cannot forgive, but that doesn't mean he isn't deep. His backstory is absolutely eye-opening. It really reveals the web of despair he's been weaved into, and the trauma which morphed him into such a state, unable to reach out. My only reasoning for not really forgiving him is: "Cool Motive, Still Murder."

I just love the fact that in every confidant there’s some sort of deal or motive between the protagonist and the confidant. But with Akechi they just generally hang out and have fun with no intention other than to spend time with each other. ❤️ Also, the song that plays at the credits is a song from Joker to Akechi. It’s called Our Light. You should definitely check it out. It made me cry 😭
5:39 if you think about it, Akechi talks about how he has always felt unwanted. So this dialogue may also show that he resents them because he thought changing people in the Metaverse made him special - yet after meeting the Phantom Thieves he realizes that that power isn't unique to him. It kind of takes away the one thing that made him feel important or needed.

Your comment on the similarities between Makoto and Akechi made me realise something.Akechi has always been my favourite character (even in Vanilla), but Makoto was always a close second. I think it’s because of the theme of loneliness that the game explores through both of their arcs. I feel like I see a part of my younger, teenage self in them, and I think a lot of people can probably relate to that. It’s interesting, because both characters navigate their feelings and experiences in vastly different ways. I really appreciate games that go the extra mile in creating such believable, human characters.
I just realized why a FeMC for Persona 5 would be complicated, and its the sheer fact that she could seduce Akechi, which would throw one hell of a wrench into things.

You mentioned how Makoto and Akechi are similar, which is true, but I don't think it's just Makoto. I think Akechi takes bits and pieces of each Phantom Thief and their hardships, personality, and such and incorporates them into his own character. While Akechi is Joker's dark mirror, I think he fulfills that role in a way for each individual party member as well.

They all went through hardships but none to the degree that Akechi did. Like, they all had some sort of support system. He mirrors the phantom thieves because he's what they all could've been if they didn't get saved in time.
I think people are misunderstanding thr relationship between Joker and Akechi. There is an hidden undercurrent with them. It isn't some pure friendship. Their friendship is one of rivalry. They can't stand the idea of being less than each other. Yes, this leads to a very genuine friendship. But what motivates these interactions are these intense feelings of jealousy over each others talents. Each wants to best the other. That is the deal between them. To compete against each other. Which does make me think if a gay relationship was available it would have to be Akechi. Seriously, the tension is so high between them.

In my vanilla playthrough (back when P5 was released) I romanced Ann. I love how she is so cheerful and laid-back. On top of that she deeply cares for Shiho and you can see how much she suffers because she didn't realise what Shiho was going through

The original P5 gives an abrupt closure on Akechi by killing him off in Shido's palace. I was annoyed and sad that about that. I love for the fact that they opened up more on Akechi and let us look at his psychotic smart ass agressive side in the maruki dungeon.

Akechi has been one of my favorite characters ever since the first time I played P5. Even before I learned everything about him, I just really enjoyed his character. And then as I got to know him better I loved him even more! P5R was such an amazing experience for me. And it solidified me as someone who truly believes that Joker and Akechi are soulmates. Robbie Daymond has also quickly risen to be one of my favorite voice actors because of his performance as both Akechi and Prompto from FFXV

One thing I noted as well in my playthru is that Joker always made a point one way or another that his relationship with his confidants are just deals they made (this is most apparent in kasumi's and Maruki's) but he never even once say that with Akechi. Also in the 4th rank with Akechi, Joker is the one that opens up abt his criminal record instead of akechi asking him abt it. Ryuji had to ask him the first time, so is the time with Yusuke and Makoto (where he visibly have nervous tick by tapping his leg up and down)
Edit: That line Akechi said abt "Since they have special talents, I assume their hearts must be burning with a sense of justice and duty" made me thinks that he thinks that the power to change heart is an inherent skill a Joker have bc he has a strong sense of justice just like how he has an inherent skill to break people with call of chaos bc of his immense rage and hatred. Thats why later, when he confronts you during the school festival and mona explains how to change hearts, he has that sad portrait and said "No one could've figured out that MO..." as in that he couldn't have figured that out himself before. One time during his talk with Sae, I think during fifth palace, he also have an angry portrait and said "If only I'm aware of that kind of power" in jpn idk what he said in english to be exact but that say so much abt how much he regret things (it also fit the lyric of No More What Ifs which is his theme). It was something he would have done to Shido if he could but he's stuck where he is now and he just decided to keep going with his original plan.

Another point I didn't see anyone make and you didn't say anything about is that Akechi can also be considered a Wildcard. He was given the ability by Yaldy and he has multiple Personas. However, compared to you who made connections which allowed you more than just 2 Personas, he failed to cultivate it. He only has 2 Personas, technically (his 3rd is a fusion of Loki and Robin Hood).
If you think about it, Robin Hood was created solely for the Phantom Thieves, and more directly, for Joker. Just as he was Joker's Confidant, Joker was his Confidant too, but his one and only.

For Robin Hood, I'm of the belief that it comes more from his childhood. It's just my view on it, I have no clue, but he grew up wanting to be a hero his mom could be proud of so I don't think it was created for Joker necessarily, but more just a true reflection of how he always wanted to be since he was a lil Goro while wielding his toy gun ;-;

I don't usually go for joke names, as I usually find the joke runs its course long before the playthrough is over, but I will recognize "Akechi's Ass" is really funny in the context of some of those lines. And maybe fit a little too perfectly.
Also shoutout to you for putting your Akechi thirst aside for a few seconds to recognize Ann being great. She doesn't always gets the respect she deserves, from the fanbase or the game. As much as I love the cast as a whole and find them very entertaining, Ann is definitely the character I would most genuinely want to spend time around in real life. And not even necessarily in the waifu sense. Everyone deserves a friend or companion like Ann.
She has the Megan Fox from transformers problem where because the camera treats her like she has no substance the playerbase doesn't notice she does

They get their depth and day in the limelight during their main story palace and afterwards, you need to do their confidants to see more of that depth. I do wish more of their characterization and depth was carried into the main story. Still, Ann does get her side arc of getting over her grudge against Makoto. That's more than a lot of the other characters get.

Man, I was exactly like you when I first played persona 5. I hated Akechi whenever I talked to him especially after he shot me, I saw myself a lot in him and I hated it. And I never truly accepted him even at his death. I still hated him. Royal made me change that opinion since he got a confidant, and I was crying just like you were by the end of it all. This series has called me out in the best way possible. (And now I’m an Akechi kinnie lord save me)
I also see myself in Akechi, but while I do think he is a well-written and interesting character I do not like him because he was not strong enough to rise above his father and instead turned to murdering people. When I was a child, my biggest goal was to not become like my father who made my childhood so miserable. Therefore I don't approve of the road Akechi chose
I actually hated my dad so much, I wanted to frame him for suicide. Granted, my dad was super abusive to me. He married my mother for 2 years only to take custody of me and then leave my mother for a bipolar woman that hated my guts.

I gotta admit - Akechi might be a character I cannot forgive, but that doesn't mean he isn't deep. His backstory is absolutely eye-opening. It really reveals the web of despair he's been weaved into, and the trauma which morphed him into such a state, unable to reach out. My only reasoning for not really forgiving him is: "Cool Motive, Still Murder."

I just love the fact that in every confidant there’s some sort of deal or motive between the protagonist and the confidant. But with Akechi they just generally hang out and have fun with no intention other than to spend time with each other. ❤️

So this dialogue may also show that he resents them because he thought changing people in the Metaverse made him special - yet after meeting the Phantom Thieves he realizes that that power isn't unique to him. It kind of takes away the one thing that made him feel important or needed.

Your P5R playthroughs are really the best. This reminded me of that one video where you cried during your boss fight w/ Akechi bc it hit close to home... and then I started crying bc Ik exactly how it feels to want to save and fix someone, but no matter how hard you try, you just can’t.
When you have someone in your life that you can correlate to the situation, it hurts so much more.. It's where my feelings came from in that moment for Akechi and I'm really sorry to hear that you and others go through that too...

Your comment on the similarities between Makoto and Akechi made me realise something.Akechi has always been my favourite character (even in Vanilla), but Makoto was always a close second. I think it’s because of the theme of loneliness that the game explores through both of their arcs. I feel like I see a part of my younger, teenage self in them, and I think a lot of people can probably relate to that. It’s interesting, because both characters navigate their feelings and experiences in vastly different ways. I really appreciate games that go the extra mile in creating such believable, human characters.
P5 does a good job of showing healthy ways to deal with traumas, alongside the examples of the bad ways.
I just realized why a FeMC for Persona 5 would be complicated, and its the sheer fact that she could seduce Akechi, which would throw one hell of a wrench into things.

You mentioned how Makoto and Akechi are similar, which is true, but I don't think it's just Makoto. I think Akechi takes bits and pieces of each Phantom Thief and their hardships, personality, and such and incorporates them into his own character. While Akechi is Joker's dark mirror, I think he fulfills that role in a way for each individual party member as well.

Futaba- feels responsible for her mom's death and was manipulated by government/researchers because of it
Haru- abused and used by her father
Kasumi- felt inferior to her sister and tried to change her entire personality to make people like her more
Akechi is the story's ultimate victim because he's severely underprivileged compared to all of them. They all went through hardships but none to the degree that Akechi did. Like, they all had some sort of support system. He mirrors the phantom thieves because he's what they all could've been if they didn't get saved in time.

I think people are misunderstanding thr relationship between Joker and Akechi. There is an hidden undercurrent with them. It isn't some pure friendship. Their friendship is one of rivalry. They can't stand the idea of being less than each other. Yes, this leads to a very genuine friendship. But what motivates these interactions are these intense feelings of jealousy over each others talents. Each wants to best the other. That is the deal between them. To compete against each other. Which does make me think if a gay relationship was available it would have to be Akechi. Seriously, the tension is so high between them.

In my vanilla playthrough (back when P5 was released) I romanced Ann. I love how she is so cheerful and laid-back. On top of that she deeply cares for Shiho and you can see how much she suffers because she didn't realise what Shiho was going through

The original P5 gives an abrupt closure on Akechi by killing him off in Shido's palace. I was annoyed and sad that about that. I love for the fact that they opened up more on Akechi and let us look at his psychotic smart ass agressive side in the maruki dungeon.

Akechi has been one of my favorite characters ever since the first time I played P5. Even before I learned everything about him, I just really enjoyed his character. And then as I got to know him better I loved him even more! P5R was such an amazing experience for me. And it solidified me as someone who truly believes that Joker and Akechi are soulmates. Robbie Daymond has also quickly risen to be one of my favorite voice actors because of his performance as both Akechi and Prompto from FFXV
