  • WHY DOES RIDING A MOTORCYCLE RELIVE STRESS?
Motorcyclists have long expressed that going for a ride is a stress reducing experience and essential for their mental wellness. In this video, I back up the concept of "throttle therapy" with a few key studies about body language, hormones, focus, and a Harley-Davidson funded study from UCLA measuring stress and adrenaline. Let me know in the comments what your experience has been with motorcycling and stress relief. What about it gives you peace or presence?

I'm 51 & dying, and riding my motorcycle stresses the heck out of me. Still, I'll ride as long as I can. I guess everything you stated all depends on one's underlying health conditions. I just ride to push myself to live another day. Of course, "End Stage Liver Disease" is no laughing matter and nether is waiting for a Liver Transplant from MGH in Boston, MA. I've been riding since I was 16 years old on the road. Of course, I could get a Liver Transplant, but there is only 30 to 40% chance of that happening. I think the worst thing finding out that I have Cirrhosis of The Liver, Ascites, and an enlarged Spleen is that I was planning on starting up a business and making loads. So much for that happening. The crazy thing is that I my Cirrhosis of The Liver wasn't caused by Alcohol.

Even if there was a possibility of rain during the day I still rode, because I only needed two dry times, going to work and going home! Since I rode to work I had the opportunity to get my mind ready for work and of course riding home I had the opportunity to leave all the stress behind! As a survivor of a traumatic brain injury thanks to a drunk driver running me over at 35mph and severe PTSD along with 8% loss of brain function from that TBI, my PTSD counselor recommended getting back onto 2 wheels as a way to "rewire" my brain and combat the severe depression I was suffering from my brain injury/ PTSD and subsequent divorce from my wife of 20 years now that I was damaged and no longer "met her professional & personal goals ".
It took me a while to save up and research what type of bike I wanted but I finally found myself exploring my state on an Africa Twin. It was stressful as I had not ridden since 2011 but it was exhilarating to be on two wheels again and seeing country I had not seen in years. It was a great challenge to go for a "scoot" and make it back home in 1 piece and not be someone's hood ornament.
I was working parts of my brain that I had not used for a long time and forcing neurons to go to new places inside my damaged neural net.
To make it home after a long day at work and jump on my scooter and go for a ride decreases my stress and makes my brain buzz. I come back feeling happier with a much better outlook on life. This is especially important when my kids are with the "evil ex" and I'm feeling very alone. My 2 wheel therapy combats my depression and forced my brain to new places as I have to balance, focus, plan, shift, watch out for hazards, enjoy the sights, smell, listen, feel in a whole new way and retrain my brain. I'm still an introvert and ride alone just so I dont have to worry about another.
But my 2 wheel time is a godsend to me when I can ride. Thanks to all of you 2 wheel Angel's I've been watching for the last year that helped me get back on the road and go places I didn't think I could go by myself.

When I want to empty my Brain, I get on my bike. My bike is an extension of my brain and body. It's a therapy tool. When I am riding my bike, I am FULLY occupied and all parts of my body are used to control the machine. No other mode of transportation puts you in the Zone of being powerful and vulnerable at the same time. When I am on my bike I am FOCUSED on my surroundings and the bike itself. I feel and control it's heartbeat. On a bike you need to be Proactive and not Reactive. Riding connects me directly to the world around me. Riding is Primal and Visceral while being fun and relaxing at the same time. Not so much in the car bubble. Throttle Therapy is Brain Therapy!

While I absolutely love the aspect of riding something one built with one's own hands, I feel that there's even more to be had from your typical crotch rocket. In addition to the dopamine throughout (which I'm sure you've noticed already), there's also adrenaline on tap (use wisely!) and perhaps the satisfaction of having tamed a wild beast which may well try to kill you if mishandled.

I ride every day. It's what I do for a living and I also ride my bikes as my daily commuters. I have a truck but rarely drive it and only when I need to haul something too big for my bike. I ride my bike regardless of weather and season, and ride in snow as well as tar melting heat. I've spent most of my years riding sport bikes and have gradually started to spend more time on larger cruisers (my wife's idea), though I still like to drag a knee once in awhile.
I've been doing this for many decades and since I ride professionally, you might say I have a bit of experience on the track as well as in traffic conditions.
As you mentioned, riding can be very therapeutic, mind clearing, relaxing and let's you get more in touch with the road, weather and environment. You get more of the sounds, smells and sensations of the road as you twist and turn, or rip it down a long straight. I love it and wouldn't do this if I didn't. Unfortunately, the biggest change to my riding experiences I've noticed, especially in the last few years, is the huge and growing presence of distracted and negligent drivers due to mobile devices. I can safely say that when I get forced out of my lane or someone pulls out in front of me, that driver will have a phone in their hand. Almost every damn time.
You say that riding can offer a physical benefit as well as a mental one, and I agree, but I can honestly say that the part of my body that gets the greatest amount of exercise is the middle finger of my left hand.
Be safe and keep two rubbers down!

I’m a disabled vet. and I can’t explain how much going for a ride helped me. Even in my car, a used corvette c6. I had to sell the car when I was medically retired(I should have kept it..) I had the bike still and would ride often to help going through all the crap as I left and became a civilian. We had to move when my pay was messed up and we had to sell our house to keep from being foreclosed on. I didn’t have the area to ride or the best weather, for me personally. I can say without a doubt the car made me feel like wasn’t ”disabled”. The way the seat held me and the feel of going around a corner with speed you wouldn’t normally be able to do in a standard car. The bike had its own way of making me feel better about myself. Both got me out of the house and interacting with other people that had the same passion. When I first heard the new Corvette was going to be mid engine with a very affordable MSRP, I thought i was going to be able to pick up a used one after about 5 years or so… then Covid hit. The price doubled. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to own one. For me, it felt like the only way I would ever be able to own a mid engine super car like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, would be this car. Now even it was out of reach forever. I could really use my car right now… I don’t have an outlet that can provide that feeling. My self isolation has even gotten worse. A bike or a car can make such a difference.

Dirt bikes are awesome for that reason. Breaking traction is not only easier, it's the norm, and coming off it in the dirt has basically zero consequences (other than you're now even muddier), so you get to learn how to control this in a relatively safe environment.
Then if it happens on the road you're much better equipped to handle it.

The second i start going I instantly get into the most peaceful entanglement with the outdoor world. The wind, road, trees, grass, sky, and all the smells just take me to a amazing place in my mind. The way I am focused on all the things for my safety combines with all the nature and makes me so at peace. My mood immediately is positive for a good while after a ride. Even if only a 20 min ride

For me any activity that requires total focus puts me into a meditative state. I love motorcyling, mountain biking, snowboarding, and skateboarding because they all make me immediately forget about all my worries and troubles and just focus entirely on the moment and whats in front of me. I can have similar experiences being out in nature but because just sitting by a creek I dont have to focus on not crashing its easier for my my mind to wander and start to stress about life BS. It's hard to know what to do with my downtime honestly, if i could truly live the eat, sleep, ride lifestyle I would but there's always silly responsibilities getting in the way lol.

Well said. I've long thought that riding is so soothing because the sensory load prevents you from worrying and builds up some testosterone. I have a 25-minute commute and I feel totally awake and present by the time I get to work.

This was wonderfully made. I like the idea of the open power posture contributing to wellness of the mind. The state of hyper-focus but spatially aware of all things at the same time also has some contribution to this, I think. I often tell people that motorcycling is meditation on metal and yoga on saddles, with a little danger mixed in to keep it honest.

Awesome! I love it!! I've always said that riding my motorcycle is my "70 MPH massage" haha. I bought a new bike when I got a new job at a company known for it's stress and the demands they place on their employees. I'd worked in stressful jobs before but this one was off the charts and my new bike REALLY helped me deal with all the complex issues I was confronted with on a daily basis. It was a professional company but I'd love to ride my bike to work, with all my gear on and just walk in a get ready to work. People looked at me kinda funny but I didn't care. We had a big campus so if a meeting was at a far away building, I'd ride my bike over and carrying my helmet in with my briefcase always got strange looks which I loved.
Sadly my bikes aren't running anymore BUT I just bought a brand new motorcycle jack, so I can jack them up and work on the wheels and brakes and I've got some new tools to help me work on them. Hopefully by Spring 2024, I'll be back on the roads....but I got a lot of work to do between now and then.

Your mention on posture was right on the money. My 1st time doing magic mushrooms, I was experimenting with moving my body in different positions, and taking note on the changes it produced in the mind as well as the body. Amy Cudy's book cover showing the figure with arms open and raised was literally the exact same posture I took note of during that trip. It was hilarious trying to explain this to my friends in the moment, just seeing a circle of people sitting down and raising their arms, searching for something that was up in the air apparently, haha. This is one of the many reasons I choose to ride 365 days a year. Good video.
*Edit: I just looked at your page and the last video you made has mushrooms in the thumbnail!🍻

I can attest to this, @meghanstark! I've ridden motorcycles and scooters for nearly 20 years and have experienced a "flow state" on both. My mind is attentive and aware without being hypervigilant, and some of my best realizations and thoughts for creative writing come to me while on the saddle. As a yoga devotee, I have experienced the same feelings of calm awareness on the mat as I do while riding. Thanks for putting these two together! I especially loved your thoughts about the "power pose" that 2-wheeled vehicles naturally encourage. This is a powerful insight!

To me it's about living in the present. When on a bike you are constantly surveying the terrain, the other drivers, the input to the bike, and a hundred other things that require an attention level not required in a vehicle. On a bike you are 100% present at nearly all times and while to some that may seems exhausting it is actually one of the more freeing experiences around
