Otis was dynamite performing live... his performance of this song at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is one of my favourite concert film experiences. Check it out!
I definitely will have to check it out I never knew he performed at Monterey and this is my favorite song of his although I recently found I've got dreams to remember and I can't get it out of my head❤❤❤❤❤ blessings from Toronto
Asia & BJ, You'll love his "Try A Little Tenderness", "These Arms Of Mine" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long" !!! Arguably, the best male soul singer of all-time!
I like the live 'Try a little tenderness' where the backing group are all wearing orange/yellow, recorded the day before the crash. His performance is outstanding.
Exactly!!!...Of all the great soul singers, I haven't got that "touch" feel of Otis until I've heard Josh Teskey of the Teskey Brothers sing "Rain" from the "Color Show."
I hope someday you two get to see the footage of his incredible performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, less than six months before his death. Backed by members of Booker T and the MGs, his was one of the most popular acts, and he was warmly received by an auditorium full of hippy rockers, much to his amazement.
Redding wrote this with Jerry Butler ("For Your Precious Love," "Only the Strong Survive") in a Buffalo hotel room. The song finds Otis in a predicament: his love affair is going cold, but he's been loving her for so long, he can't stop now. This was Redding's best selling single and biggest hit while he was alive. Redding died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967
When my wife left me years ago, I listened to this song on a loop. Kind of masochistic, but when it comes to love, we can't always control our emotions. My mom caught me listening to it and said that song was her and my fathers dating song. It's one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. The only thing more powerful is watching him perform it. That video is on you tube.
Otis is absolute soul, 100 percent. He didn't have the time to stretch as as far as Marvin Gaye did, and buttery Sam Cooke is still my personal favorite. But try to follow the suggestions to watch Redding's entire Monterey Pop performance, and for that half-hour you will feel like you are watching the greatest soul singer who ever lived.
There is no other voice like Otis! It was so soulful! We lost him way too soon at 26 years old in a plane crash in 1967! I can only imagine the heights his career would have went if he’d lived! He’s was already a legend in his time!❤❤
I never knew who Otis Redding was until I heard he had died in a plane crash. The King of Soul. The release of Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay made me cry. Here was a man who was about to reach superstardom was gone. Six months after his appearance at Monterey Pop in 1967 where 3 unknowns stole the show (Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix) along with Otis playing with the MGs. Otis Redding wrote most of his songs with friend legendary Steve Cropper. His guitar on Otis' song were so beautiful. Whether it is The Dock of the Bay, Try A Little Tenderness, I've Been Loving You Too Long or These Arms of Mine his music was so moving.
I'm an old woman, so I was a young woman back in the day when all the soul singers were in their heyday. Every turn of the radio dial brought forth the best music ever. With all the wonderful artists to choose from, Otis was at the top of my list. Another artist was Sam Moore of the group Sam and Dave. One of his performances that no one has reacted to is at Atlantic Records 50th reunion when Sam paid tribute to Otis by singing I've Been Loving You Too Long. Sam entered the stage wearing a red suit, looking great. What followed is one of the most iconic Performances EVER! PLEASE, react to this one for me and all your followers that love the best music on the planet. I know what I'm talking about! Btw, I love your reactions. Keep on keeping on guys!
I'm from Macon, GA, so I've always known about Otis Redding's music. I was 7 years old when he died and I remember my whole family was devastated. My cousins attended his funeral at the Macon City Auditorium. Years later, I met Otis's wife, Zelma, and their daughter Karla (she owned an upscale shoe boutique), Otis III and Dexter. They are all wonderful people, very protective of Otis's legacy, and have just recently opened the Otis Redding Foundation which provides local underprivileged children with instruments and teaching. Though the Reddings could have gone anywhere in the world that they chose, they stayed in Macon.
Check out everything by Otis Redding. It's all sooo good because he's the greatest soul man ever. I'm 64 and thank God I been listening to him since I can remember. Where have you'll been. His backing bands are the best R&B bands ever.
If you are going to name any four soul singers, you must, you must include the great Sam Cooke. Period! No Mt. Rushmore without the great, great, great Sam Cooke.
There is a memorable video of Otis, accompanied by Eric Burdon and Chris Farlowe singing Shake on the Ready Steady Go show in London in 1966. A one off performance well worth viewing.
I remember the first time I heard this song Tom Jones was singing it and he does a hell of a job! I love Otis Redding original version as well! Very heartbreaking! Check out Tom’s version, he sings it live his variety show This Is Tom Jones!
BJ is right about the golden era of soul music, Otis, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Al Green, Gladys Knight, the Three Degrees, so many great groups and singers.
yeah..this rips your own soul out of your body.......he was sooo dang good...I love him..I do,with all my heart...you cant beat ottis at this music...nobody could touch him......this rips me to shreds...thanks for this post..I did have tears....LOL...I honestly did and I needed them tear to remind me that Im human and some things are ok when they touch you this deep.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is the most soulful song I've ever heard. The depth of feeling he puts into this song is off the charts!
You should hear this song song by Stevie wright. He. Performed it in his concert at the Bridge way Hotel in Australia. in the year 1987😂😂😂. It sounded like Otis Redding was singing it🎉❤❤❤
One of the true male artists, you can hear the aching in his voice thru this song, AL Green is another that you can really feel the emotion in all that he sang. Truly real soul music.
Look up Steve Cropper the guitarist at STAX records and how Otis came to record this song. I saw him live in MONTEREY in June of 1967 before I was sent to Viet Nam. Unfortunately, his plane crashed in 1968. I loved listening to his albums since 1965 and do still to this day.
Besides the love of this man(OATIS) everytime I here his name,Janis Joplin's praise of him made me find every album he every made&played them all Everyone a masterpiece of emotion&talent
I grew up in Memphis with Stax and Sun. The Stax studio band was Booker T and the MG's and the horn section was The Memphis Horns. They backed artists like Otis who unfortunately died in his prime as well as Isaac Hayes, Sam and Dave, Eddie Floyd and others
Keyboards Booker T. Jones , Issac Hayes Steve Cropper guitar , Donald Duck Dunn bass, AL Jackson on drums. The Memphis horns and others . One of the finest songs put together at Stax.
Otis Redding was my first musical love. Local bands in rural Scotland played lots of soul music in the mid 1960s when I was a teenager, so I already knew most of his songs when I bought "Otis Live In Europe". Gone too soon.
Otis Redding was from Macon, Ga as were Ray Charles and Little Richard. The Allman Brothers were also based in Macon. Duane Allman was briefly with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and appeared on records by Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett.
Otis was such a soulful singer. Another one that I really love is Donny Hathaway. For All We Know, You Were Mesnt for Me, I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know, A Song for You, Giving Up, Someday We’ll All Be Free for starters. When he died the world lost a great singer.
Love Otis Redding nicknamed the "King of Soul". Sadly he died in 1967 in a plane crash at only the age of 26. But he left us some beautiful music. Some of my favorites are "Try A Little Tenderness", "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", "Respect", "These Arms Of Mine" etc.
You can see why I love the r&b/soul music of the late '60s and '70s, up until disco ruined everything. After wearing out the 6 disc Rhino box set "Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience" I dug back into the soul charts of the period and my 8 more discs on my own. From the best known artists to obscure 1-hit wonders, fantastic music and artistry.
OMG Someone react to Otis Redding i cannot wait. I love him as a child grew up slow dancing in Belize. This man is fantastic. Keep your loving arms around me, Open the door, That's what my heart needs i can write all his songs and America don't play but maybe. He was just becoming accept in USA when he died. But thank im from Belize a eastern carribean island we where British and he blew up in England, Europe Africa all counties rein by the Queen. Sad American miss this man glory. React to RAIN by Teasly Brothers he sound like Otis reincarnated
My favorite singer. Sitting on the dock of the bay is so haunting because he died three days after recording it in a plane crash. I read an article on the crash and I clicked on the next page and it actually showed him dead in the airplane seat, still strapped in. Really disrespectful In my opinion. Even in death he was so impeccably dressed. He was known for always being dressed well. I love this song and another one of my favorites is ‘Tramp’. Whenever I hear tramp I can just imagine everyone in a club dancing in unison. ‘I’ve been loving you too long’ and ‘fa fa fa fa fa’ are some other great ones
You have to check out his performance of this song at the historic 1967 Monterrey Pop concert that included The Who, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Most of the groups were some variation of rock and Otis was the only soul artist on the bill. But he turned those rocking hippies into soul lovers that night when he does this song as he completely wins them over. Sadly, he would die in a plane crash only a few months later.
Otis was a legend for sure Al Green was also great in this genre an awesome performance of his was How can you mend a broken heart( live on soul 1972) Promise you won't be disappointed it's amazing
Love Otis!! Try A Little Tenderness has always been my fave but this song and These Arms Of Mine are sooo smooth and good too. Please explore more!! Keep On Rockin'
The incomparable Otis Redding. Thank you. Please react to more Otis! Take a look at his catalog. Can you imagine the music he would have given us? Heartbreaking to lose him at 26.
Otis was dynamite performing live... his performance of this song at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is one of my favourite concert film experiences. Check it out!
Yes. Monterey Pop Festival version is my favorite version.
The way he has the band on a string, making them repeat phrases like James brown, soooo cool.
What James said! Amen!!! Otis has IMO the greatest soulful voice of all time… like warm honey!!
Yes, These Arms of Mine
He was great, but I'd still select Marvin Gaye as the best male soul singer of all-time.
I sure hope they listen to I've Been Loving You Too Long soon because I can't wait! ;-)
I like the live 'Try a little tenderness' where the backing group are all wearing orange/yellow, recorded the day before the crash. His performance is outstanding.
@The Reritee You're probably right. I have rather uneducated tastes. How about this? Best guitar player in history--Jerry Garcia.
Otis had that Soul touching “Cry” in his voice! One of the Great!
Exactly!!!...Of all the great soul singers, I haven't got that "touch" feel of Otis until I've heard Josh Teskey of the Teskey Brothers sing "Rain" from the "Color Show."

Otis just made you feel a song and that is so rare now. You can’t teach that, either you got or or you don’t.
So,so true. He made you feel! RIP
Otis’ voice is the definition of soul. My gosh what a talent. Great reaction
When my husband and I got married, he picked out " These Arms Of Mine" for our first dance. It was the most romantic 5 minutes of my life.
Otis Redding is one of the greats. Such a beautiful voice.

One of my favorite all time artists and songs! Raw emotion. Otis Redding, Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers are my Mount Rushmore of soul singers

Otis Redding… always top of the charts… now and forever
My mom used to listen to this and I’ve always loved it. Otis Redding is amazing music.
There is a memorable video of Otis, accompanied by Eric Burdon and Chris Farlowe singing Shake on the Ready Steady Go show in London in 1966. A one off performance well worth viewing.
What a trio.
I remember the first time I heard this song Tom Jones was singing it and he does a hell of a job! I love Otis Redding original version as well! Very heartbreaking! Check out Tom’s version, he sings it live his variety show This Is Tom Jones!

One of the greatest voices I've ever heard. This song is as close to perfection as you'll get.

BJ is right about the golden era of soul music, Otis, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Al Green, Gladys Knight, the Three Degrees, so many great groups and singers.
The greatest soul singer there ever was. For my top 3 albums to be on a lost island his would be one of them.

Good music should evoke an emotional response from the listener. That's what makes it art.

Otis Redding does break my heart with his songs, but they are so beautiful. Thank you for this review! Brilliant soul.
Love that old school music so Glad my parents played all kinds of music when I was growing up
Otis Redding is like the Jimi Hendrix of soul.
that’s perfect.
I was in college when he died. Everybody was torn up. Some girls drove to his funeral. His music is legendary and timeless.
One thing rockers/soul singers/ folkies etc all understood back in the day ---- dynamics --- make - - more ---- emotion.
A legend who would have a ascended to even greater heights!👍🏻☮️🥲
I love Otis and I’m proud to say all my grown children know and love Otis.
I first heard this song as part of a movie soundtrack. I long ago forgot the movie but the song has definitely stuck in my head and heart.
dancing with my❤ love ❤!! thank you Otis
Agree Asia " just wow " oooo ooo oooo ooo it brings tears to my eyes and pain in my heart in a beautiful way x
ALL TIME GREAT SONG & SINGER. Thanks
Sittin on the Dock of the Bay is great but most of his music is pure soul like this. He is soul. Keep listening.

What a great voice. Otis was like good whiskey. A really sweet bite.
The most emotional outpouring ever made! Period…
Otis Redding was my first musical love. Local bands in rural Scotland played lots of soul music in the mid 1960s when I was a teenager, so I already knew most of his songs when I bought "Otis Live In Europe". Gone too soon.
How great was Otis Redding .. The Man
In my opinion the greatest soul singer ever step foot on this planet
Memphis music right there! Booker T and the MG’s backing him up. Great singer!!
Otis Redding was from Macon, Ga as were Ray Charles and Little Richard. The Allman Brothers were also based in Macon. Duane Allman was briefly with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and appeared on records by Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett.

Nobody did Motown better than Otis Redding. Another amazing artist taken from us too early.
The wonderful Amazing Otis gone too soon RIP.

Finally I been shouting Otis on your live stream. Thank you 🙏
Chris Stapleton reminds me so much of Mr. Redding. The rawness, the power, the realness.
This is the good stuff. More Otis please.
Otis wooed my wife for me. 😂 You have to see him sing this live. RIP Otis.
You should have seen him live. He could elicit emotion like no other!
Mine too, love Otis Redding
You’ve got a watch the live version from the Monterey pop festival 1967, it’ll definitely bake your beans you have no idea.

Pure soul!
As a child I listened to his records on repeat. He is one of a kind and definitely touches your soul with his voice. ❤
I WISHED FRITZ WUNDERLICH AND OTIS REDDING LIVED LONG ENOUGH AND MET.
When you guys play a singer like Otis Redding you should consider playing more than one song
Otis was a legend for sure
Al Green was also great in this genre an awesome performance of his was How can you mend a broken heart( live on soul 1972)
Promise you won't be disappointed it's amazing
You're right, BJ. It is a vocal masterpiece!
Otis Redding is THE reason I fell in love with this era in music! This IS music!
What an amazing soul man
This is PURE soul!!
