To truly appreciate the level of horror in this film you have to imagine yourself as a young kid watching it for the first time in the 1980s. I watched this when it first came out and it messed me up so badly I ended up with a lifelong horror film addiction. Now, when I watch modern horror movies they barely make me nervous or jumpy at all, because Poltergeist did a number on me forty years ago.

Yes … as a kid it was complete trauma … which lessened as I grew and I now love this movie … but it took on a whole new dimension of terror when I became a father … when I look at my son, and think of a situation like this, it’s terrifying. To think of him trapped, myself powerless to help him and listening to his terror, trapped in a world his young mind cannot comprehend … that’s a whole new level of fear and emotion! 👍🏼

Completely agree with you. But for me, ALL the actors and actresses in the film are well cast. Then again, it's Spielberg. He never misses in terms of casting. What you feel about the mother, I feel about Craig T. Nelson, the dad. I identify a lot with him. The way he treats his family, the way he rushes into the in-ground pool without thinking to look for his daughter. The way he greets his son when he enters the bedroom, etc... Jobeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson bring so much credibility to this film. This is to Spielberg's credit.

The canary dying is symbolic. Miners used to bring a canary with them when they went digging in case of gas leaks, because they were far more sensitive to it. If you looked at the canary and saw it had died, that meant there was a gas leak and you needed to get out ASAP. In this movie, the canary dying is basically a warning to the family to get out now.

This movie was so terrifying because it was every childhood nightmare brought to life. And that's what I loved about it. You learned what every character feared and then their fear came to life on screen. The only scene that seemed out of place was the researcher who pulled his face apart in the mirror. It was completely out of step with the rest of the movie.

One thing about this movie is that it has a very warm heart. The creature design was not too gross (except for the entranceway across dimensions). The oldest daughter did not return for the 1st sequel, because she (The actress, Dominique Dunne) had been murdered (Strangled) by her jealous ex boyfriend shortly after the first movie came out... then the actress (Heather O'Rourke) who played the liittle blonde girl, Carol Ann, died of a misdiagnosed intestinal blockage at age 12., while the third movie was being made... Prior to poltergeist, haunted house movies almost always occurred amongst the aristocracy in big mansions and such. Romero and Spielberg filmed this movie in a suburban setting that was more familiar and relatable to a broader audience. The Freeling's house looked like a million other houses that most people have been in or lived in rather than the stereotypical creepy old house or mansion that everyone knows to avoid. You can't avoid what looks and feels exactly like the house you live in.

"THEY'RE HEEERE" went down in history as 2 of the creepiest words combined. 😂

Spielberg understood how to incorporate elements of horror into a more general audience type of film. His films aren't relentless but the scary moments are properly scary.

I've watched almost all of their reaction videos, and one of the best things about them is no heady analysis, no trying to figure out what the storyteller is trying to convey, no indepth analysis, just plain ol' along for the ride the movie wants to take you on. Many reacters always analyze the movie they are watching to make it sound like they know what they're talking about. Hello, those of us watching you HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE MOVIE. BJ and Asia are awesome that they are here just to enjoy a movie, no commentary or documentaries. Just sit back, and enjoy the movie for what it is. They react the same way most of us would react when we don't expect anything from the movie. I thorougly enjoyed watching them. Keep up the great work.

The take y'all have on this classic is awesome. The clown is the director's reason to show that childhood fears are always there.
