  • Sailing upwind in Patagonia with FPV cameras. Fixing a rigging failure and preventing engine damage by shutting it down and anchoring with no motor in a tight fjord.
There is no one to call for help, no escape, we must fix it ourselves. After hundreds of miles of sailing in the remote wilderness things begin to go wrong. Lines break under stress and our engine fails in a tight situation. We bring you onboard to go shorthanded sailing in FPV (First Person View) as we mount headcams and bodycams to capture the truth about sailing in Patagonia. This epic and real footage is what a true bucket list adventure looks like. (Oh, and watch the end for some absolutely amazing underwater video of Patagonian dolphins!)

    0:00 Intro
0:44 Today's sailing journey begins - freeing the shore lines and raising the anchor.
2:55 Raising the sails and sailing out a rocky inlet to the main fjord - wonderful upwind sailing
7:01 We discuss our routing for the day and next anchorage
9:45 Breakdown #1 the jib car line snaps while sailing upwind in heavy air
11:04 Kate's cooking in the galley under sail, Pizza! Curtis fixes the broken line as we sail
14:03 Kate takes the helm and tacks upwind through the fjords of Patagonia
19:57 Dropping the sails and entering our next anchorage
20:35 Breakdown #2 the engine is overheating and smoking, we must shut it down and anchor, manuevering using the dinghy in the tight fjord with no engine and rocky shores
23:25 We fix the engine - clearing the raw water intake by cleaning the water strainer, pushing the kelp out from the inside with a wire fish, and changing the raw water impeller, we also use an underwater camera to inspect our hull, keel, and rudder, to check for kelp caught on the bottom
24:53 Exploring an abandoned fishing camp on a remote deserted island in Patagonia - Caleta Neruda
    25:52 Epic underwater dolphins shots!
27:00 A huge thank you to all of our Patreons (Patron Names List) and closing shots

What luck with the crew, what a woman, foredeck gorilla, winch handler and fixing food while the captain is at the wheel. such a dream! Should know that there are many of us who are jealous! ❤❤😊

All your hard labor of tacking, Kate's happy dance, Roxey's nose poking up at the cabin door and finally the dolphins with the pensive music at the end made this a thrilling video on your sailing journey thru Patagonia.

Kinda like a landing check-list between pilots and co-'s that know which way is up: you have a pilot and crew order. Love the way you guys Plan the Plan: from anchor lines to first tack set-ups and it's great that after how far, how long and how many tacks; you do count-downs. Probably the best part is that your crew can tie a bowline.
ps: More Go-pro on a stick underwater please; them big fish look cool !

I watch a dozen or more RUclips sailing channels and have always wished for a channel of experienced sailors that provide a balance showing scenery and personal shenanigans as well as explanations of sail plan, strategy and maneuvers - you guys do it. It helps me to consider what I am lacking in my sailing. Your discussion of polars interests me. After about 11000nm of cruising California's Islands and most of Mexico I have yet to focus on polars, I would not have a clue as to how to ascertain if am sailing close to them or not.

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  7 месяцев назад +2

Welcome aboard! It doesn’t sound like you lacking anything if you’ve laid 11k miles of track! A good first dive into polars focused on cruising would be on PredictWinds FAQs. Likely if the boat feels good and is sailing fast you are close to your polar speeds at any given angle. We don’t use polars so much when cruising to sail at top speeds, but to plan ahead to position ourselves where we want to be vs a weather system. Cheers!

    Hi guys,
you are now one of the last sailing youtuber I look every week .
I love your way of sailing: dynamic, always trimming the sails, steering the boat.
Very few youtubers would have sailed up wind like you do and would have started the engine
I made lot of races here in France and I appreciate.

Right on, it happens, normal parts of sailing adventures. The kelp here seems perfectly sized for our water intake and it is plentiful!

Great video. A boat drug in Porto Santo, landing on the bricks. The community helped, attaching lines, holding him off until the tow-boat arrived, The two boat accelerated with their lines attached, catapulting our mooring neighbor into our stern, braking our Hydrovane. Hopefully we can get a replacement part and be on our way to Cabo Verde.

As was noticed by @sauerjoseph, I also caught a glimpse of Roxy on the companionwaysteps. Her nose and ears told me (canine bodylanguage transcription): "Hey guys! I smell land. And you are just fiddling around with that metal thing on the bow, ropes and the dinghy. Stop this crap! Get me in that dinghy so I can crap on land. Curtis complains there is no water. I can give him a full bladder of weewee. Come on!"
