For the last 30-plus years, gennaker sailing has always been a great joy on my 27-foot Dutch-built steel boat! Your video makes me look forward to the coming season when I hope to be sailing to the island of Heligoland in the North Sea - perhaps using the gennaker in our prevailing south-westerly winds.
Europeans, however, usually make a difference between a spinnaker and a gennaker. - The spinnaker is a symmetrical triangle of a sail flying freely from the mast top and is controlled in its lower two corners by lines known as a sheet and a guy. The windward line - the guy - is attached to the windward corner of the sail and is called the tack of the sail. It is stabilized by a spinnaker pole. The leeward (downwind) line is called the sheet. It attaches to the clew of the spinnaker and is used to control the shape of the sail.
The gennaker that I use on my boat (not a racing boat like the X yachts but a family cruiser) is probably what Americans call “an asymmetric spinnaker“. Here, the guy is attached to the forestay chain plate, the sheet is a single line to control the gennaker from the cockpit, and there is no spinnaker pole at all.
Anyway, I didn’t want to become too technical. Once the “sock” is up, the fun begins!

a smooth hull is an efficient hull; it's nice when you can trim everything in as best, and get by without the engine.
Also, more Hydrophobic bottom paints are coming onto the market, something to look into when it's getting near time for bottom paint again.
smooth, hydrophobic, and a well matched feathering prop, ( and knowing your engine's torque peak RPM )
sailing, when you would otherwise be motoring, and using less fuel when you have to motor.

Apiao is one of the best places to anchor in the Chiloe area. In Chiloe there are a number of churches, including that of Apiao, built by the Company of Jesus during the conquest of Chile, before Spain expelled them from its kingdom. Today they are a world heritage site and are all restored by local communities.

Efficient movement in a big racer cruiser during light air. That is solid gold instruction for me! Thankyou so much. This is why I trade the easy movement of a heavy cruiser for the pointability and light air performance of a racer cruiser.

I'm surprised yall have a mixed sail inventory. North and Doyle... etc... Since you are racers at heart I'm surprised you don't have at least a NS 3di Main. I've seen lots of cruisers run the the 3di Ocean stuff now. I"m know those are a bit of premium though. Sharing some thoughts on sail material, sail design, sail construction would make for some good content. You could maybe do some talking-head shorts on that topic.

We aren’t a high budget program, the sails in this video all came with the boat. We know the mainsail and jib were original from the year 2000, but lucky for us were never used! We do enjoy grand-prix type sailing and good sails, lines, and hardware. We have a surprise coming up for you in this area soon…stay tuned ;-)

When I did a lot of sailing we always used a pole for the tack of our spinnaker. That keep the spinnaker out from behind the main. It appears you have a pole on your deck. Why not use that pole to hold the spinnaker tack? Especially if you want to go faster.

So the snow capped mountains you keep getting shots of in the back ground are Volcan Osorno and the pointy one is Puntiagudo, which had 4 mountain climbers die on it in the month of November 2023. Castro is the best port to visit on Chiloe. Lots of good restaurants.
You should go to Puerto Godoy which is not a port but a miles long beach. You will pass it on your way further up the coast when you leave Puerto Montt bay.
Puerto Montt is a big nasty industrial city that is not worth seeing.
The weird weather you see with the sun is because the weather patterns hit the Andes and pushes the clouds and winds parallel to the mountains and makes for those over cast days.
Too bad there is no access to Lago LLanquihue which is where you will find Puerto Varas and Frutillar and Puerto Octay (which is near to us and our little town). LLanquihue is 25 miles wide by 40 miles long and is 5,000 feet deep.
Good seafood in Puerto Montt. Angle Mo is the seafood market in Puerto Montt. Otherwise the city is kind of dirty and not attractive.
Love the video by the way.
All of the Churches on Chiloe and the surrounding islands are on a self tour that you can take. They are hand made and beautiful but for the most part closed.
Watch out for the Seal Lions because they are aggressive and not your friends.
Thanks for showing us your trip. It is cool to see someone else's perceptions of our now home country. Jim in Chile

    • @frankholden237

The pointy one seen at 8.45 is actually Volcan Corcovado which is pretty much due east of Quellon ( which is a bit of a dump) , to the south of it you later see firstly Volcan Yantales and then the twin peaks of Volcan Melamoyu.

It’s a good idea. We could, but our sheets are a bit short for that and the sail doesn’t have a gybulator, AKA…. I actually had to Google it’s “real” name. We don’t want to floss off our nice new bottom paint :-)
