pretty great breakdown, this brought back so many memories. There’s so much more juicy lore u have no idea LMAO It was fun to see someone’s perspective that wasn’t mine from that era. Rebels best clan
I’m 22 now about to graduate college and i forgot so much of this stuff bahahaha. 2023 still fuck you pay me, suck it nerds (thank you for making this video sir)
Great video! As someone who was there the whole time in the clan space and everything, it's nice to see people in the modern space keeping some level of history alive from that era. There has truly never been anything quite like MCSG since, and despite comfortably moving forward, I'll always have a special place in my heart for it. Cooper was right when he said rebels best clan, but long live Rivals too babyyy
Played on this serve from 2012 all the way to 2016. After trying UHC for a bit I quit video games and went to go live real life. Even when I’m backpacking around in random parts of the world and I see an internet cafe I think, damn if I could just go login and play a couple matches of MCSG that would bring it back. Loved this server and the semi toxic clan community I was a part of.
MCSG 1.0 was the original 2012 version of the hunger games/survival games plugin. This version of the plugin, in my opinion, is best diffentiated from later ones through tiering. In MCSG 1.0 chests could contain maps, compasses, clocks, one arrow, and one feather. Chests in general in this version of the plugin also did not contain alot of food, and probably was the closest to the 'hunger' games. In March 2013, MCSG 2.0 was released and introduced the tiering that most of us are all familiar with - Tier 1's with 5 arrows, 5 feathers, fishing rods, gold, an increase in food + removal of compasses, clocks and maps. Later, in December of 2013, they introduced a sidebar which showed how many people were left, and how many people were watching. Prior to that, there was no sidebar. If you wanted to see how many players were left, you could look at tab, OR you could do ./l (./list). Sometime in early 2014, MCSG rebranded to MCGamer. This included gamemodes such as SG, Quater Quell, Battleground (originally KitPvP), Creative, ZedChase and TF2. Later in 2014, sometime around December, MCGamer 2.0 gameout, and this is when I think some really bad business decisions were made. MCGamer merged with the AntVenom network, and introduced something like 15+ gamemodes. I believe this take over and aquisition of these servers really hindered the funding of the server, especially since no one played these gamemodes and they weren't removed until 6-7 months later. MCGamer 2.0 was the last 'version' update, however updates were made in 2015 + 2016 (including the removal of AntVenom games/games that weren't played) and in 2016 they tried to capitilise off Hypixel + TheParks success and introduced Skywars and UHC Games. Anyway, really good video. I'm surprised no one added Life855, or any of the controversial staff figures (trust me there were alot). I think still to this day, people do not realise the pedophilia, grooming, and predatorial behaviour of a few, quite a few, staff members lol.
the donor/ranks weren’t just colored names, their biggest perks were 1. being able to join full lobbies by kicking anyone that wasn’t a donor, if the lobby was all donors then the ranks would apply, i.e. Gold kicks silver Diamond kicks gold and 2. Map voting was weighted heavier, Silver vote was worth 2 votes rather than just the 1 vote for a regular play, gold was 3 votes, diamond was 4 votes
I only found out about this video now, some other things that I would have mentioned are: - The reputation that the turkish players had, they would often ask to team in the waiting lobby and worshipped the youtuber IsmetRG (which was also accused of cheating and years later made a video with Huahwi) - There was a command which I do not remember that people would ask to execute and would kill the player that did it - The various servers that replaced MCSG after its shutdown (Badlion, SpainPvP, SG-MC, Backplay and now Mineman but also cw servers like Netix, Reberion and a thousand more I cannot remember) - Maps that were removed or reworked, exclusive to mcsg such as SG Adrenaline or the holiday variations - The cheater problem which was one if not the main problem that killed the server - UHC-SG which were made popular by theparkmc I think but at one point were also playable on mcgamer - Togglesprint mod which became widespread and at one point everyone had it, many people also started editing the text
thanks for this. i don't specifically remember a mod called toggle sprint but that reminded me of mcsg blocking you from connecting if you had a certain mod installed on your client. (i think this was late 2012-early 2013) i don't remember what it was called but i know a ton of people used it because it added a hotkey for sprinting before that was added into the vanilla game. maybe it's the same mod you're talking about, unsure
Really good video brings back memories :D, one thing though that was maybe not so much known, was that you could recognize stat boosters with the bounty system, some players had ridiculous amounts of points and really good stats... the stat booster usually conisted of a 3 or 4 team, that all went to deathmatch, then they all typed /kill and put all their own points to one specific person "the one who got his stats boosted". But yes not very common i assume, but it for sure were isntances of this.
Great video. I think the MCSG/MCGamer Iceberg is bigger than any one person from the community at the time is able to compile and I really enjoyed this video as it covered a lot of aspects I didn't know about. I was a moderator around 2013-2014 and spent a lot of time in the TeamSpeak subsect of the community. I wish I remembered more because some of the drama on the staff side was probably video essay worthy lmao. From petty beef between moderators and content creators on the factions server to worse allegations mentioned elsewhere in the comment section.
A lot of people tended to blame the death of MCSG purely on bugs and neglect, which I think is partially true. I feel as though the community was also to blame for it. When it came to actual gameplay, there was only really one way to play. There were those 1-2 chest routes everyone went to for each map, the map selection felt a lot smaller and staler than it was due to only a select few maps ever being chosen, and every single PvP confrontation starting with rod spam that would sometimes go for a full minute before a single sword hit was actually dealt. Since the skill curve over the years got surprisingly steep, I think it also made MCSG much harder to approach from a new players perspective. Inevitably old players will get tired and leave, that's why you need to get new ones, and if the only real play style actively trashed newcomers, I imagine newcomers would probably just go somewhere else. I could probably go further into different issues, but this is already long enough. Great video, really brought back some memories.
Really enjoyed this. The part about manic jitter clicking LOL. I never wouldve thought MCSG or badlion wouldve died at the time, such a shame, I'll always miss it. Appreciate you preserving these memories for us
Great video, brings back so many memories haha. I'll add that while soooo many reasons contributed to the downfall of MCSG (it definitely could have survived 3+ extra years putting aside all the incompetency), ultimately it was a ticking time bomb as Mojang had a different vision for what they wanted pvp to be (with 1.9+ introducing attack cooldowns), which goes completely against the identity of the SG gamemode. With no support, stuck on an forever outdated server, issues that plagued the game (i.e. cheating, no new players bc of server version) could never be resolved... its demise was inevitable. I had a good time and made so many memories :')
Brooo it's funny this video came on my recommended. I used to be a graphic designer in this community and i feel like a lot of the reasons me and many other's went down that route was because we weren't great at making good gameplay videos/ or couldn't record well. Nice video brother, very nostalgic stuff.
very small correction: i think platinum was a tier below diamond and was added as a more permanent middle ground between diamond (lifetime when i bought it) and gold (temporary). extremely great video, i played ts to the death in elementary/middle school and i just graduated college a little bit ago.
