Can You Ride A PARK Board on a POWDER Day? Yes The Greats vs Whistler

  • If I'm totally honest I was a little caught out. New park board has been great (mind the pun) so far, and it looked like a nice mellow day up the mountain to go ride a few park laps and get more comfortable with it, fate would have other plans. I met up with Kevin and Andreas and we headed out to find some powder instead.
    So, how well can a park snowboard handle the powder?
    No doubt many of you have been in this position before, for whatever reason riding a park board on a pow day. There are gonna be some trade offs, but what I was interested in is if the added freestyle aspects can make up for the lack of float.
    I think it all depends on what boards your friends are riding and in this case it was the Orca for Andreas, and the Ultra Mind Expander for Kevin; boards built for this type of terrain.
    Drop a comment and let me know if you've ever been in this situation and how it worked out. Especially if you managed to do something awesome, or terrible because of it.
    For me the playfulless was definitely appreciated, and in general the terrain is quite consistent. As I mentioned several times in the video, the main downside was the heeldrag, which was from my setup rather than the board, and traversing so much switch definitely made the ride more interesting.

    Great to see ya out on "The Greats"!! Looking forward to your review of the board as a whole. Would be great to hear your thoughts after you get you bindings set right and try another POW day. So you had to work a little more than usual for your Stoke. You were still out in the POW, on a mountain with you best buds gotta love every second of that...and on your new board!!!

    Nice one Chris.. this is why I'm thinking of getting a Bataleon Magic Carpet.. don't have a twin at the moment and its a twin pow board that can handle park and butter..and a bit wider. Your YES looks dope though, rad shape, looks like it handled well (other than the bindings thing... always bring a snowboard tool!) ! Lol @ all the people in 7th hiking with their boards in random spots...

      Ended up being beneficial to have it twin when trying to traverse switch, it that was the Korua would have been a nightmare. Magic Carpet looks like a really good board.

      tbf most of the 'runs' arent actual 'runs'. i always really enjoyed exploring the areas around crystal ridge, lots of little nooks, for whistler i think between emerald and harmony there are some great spots, read: traverse a bit towards harmony

    welp, first season for me and i live on the ice coast (CT)...just got my first taste of powder this past friday...just little 3-5 inch deep patches from the snow makers...and it was wicked cool! feels like floating :) looking at what you guys have in your back yard, my jealousy has now grown exponentially, hahaha ;P question for ya: on average how long is the chair lift up to the top vs how long does it take to ride down? i'm learning on a local ridge that is 7min30sec lift up and 1min30sec run to the bottom...really hoping a real mountain has a much higher percentage of ride time, lol. anyways, i hope you guys continue to have a blast and thanks for the vicarious good times :)

    • @sethyoung3108
      @sethyoung3108 3 года назад +2

      Whistler and blackcomb have so many lifts and runs on the mountain so it is hard to say. The shorter runs i would say average 10 min at a leisurely pace and the long ones can do way more. My group averages 6-10 runs in a full day, from 9am to about 230pm. hope that helps

    • @ChrisEyres
      @ChrisEyres  3 года назад +1

      not sure how long it takes, around 10 mins. i saw today one of the main lifts gains about 1700ft in altitude. time riding down very much depends on the run, snow conditions etc. on a groomer day it prob takes 7mins if you dont stop. all the lifts are high speed so they get up there pretty fast. i rode some real slow lifts in japan last year and it was a very different experience

      Its a dope board thats awesome outside the park too. Wide asymmetrical platform makes for a fun carving twin too. While not a pow board its does better then most true twins.

    MASSIVE pow day today at Whistler eh?! 48cm! Unfortunately all I own is a parkboard, so I kept nosediving into the powder. Bit of a bummer but I still had some great runs. When I bought my board I didn't really know other kinds existed, it was just cheap at the used shop. Definitely saving up for a powder board next season.

    • @sethyoung3108
      @sethyoung3108 3 года назад +1

      i use a twin board as well currently, if you really set your stance back it can help a lot with float. Makes my life WAAAY easier on any day 15cm+

    • @ChrisEyres
      @ChrisEyres  3 года назад +1

      It was one for the books. I didn't own a powder board for many years, but now I have its easy to see the appeal, especially after what we have (and are still) experiencing.
      Like Seth mentioned stick the bindings as far to the tail as they'll go. I also think its important to do get a fresh wax, that extra speed will help float as well.
      What a trip out there!! So nuts

      @@ChrisEyres I got a wax for tomorrow so stoked about that! When setting the bindings back, does it take a while to get used to? Like once they're back should I just leave em there for the season or switch it whenever conditions change? Thanks for the response man!

    I think a lot of it has to do with the moisture content of the "powder", as that term can cover a spectrum of new snow texture. I have not ridden in Whistler, but the closest to it I have ridden in Revelstoke, had a different (slightly) feel than Colorado, for example. I am not sure how Whistler compares to Tahoe, but I know Tahoe is quite different from Colorado. I was amazed at how I could float in Tahoe snow that was quite deep due to the snow there being more dense. Maybe someone who has experience with both could chime in? Also depends on the steepness of the runs, shallow runs require more board.

    • @ChrisEyres
      @ChrisEyres  3 года назад +1

      Lots of good points. I dont think there is an answer, per se, as you pointed out there are lots of variables which will affect how you day goes. i was japan last year and it was ultra light, here in whistler the snow is usually relatively heavy. our base it just above 2000ft, i know colorado snow is way different but ive only ridden WA and OR

      @@ChrisEyres from what I have seen of Whistler, you have nothing to be jealous of these other places. Although I do understand the desire to get out and ride as many places as possible.
