  • If you don’t have a smartphone to install the Starlink app, you may have been using the web portal to manage your system. Starlink has disabled access to the dish web portal in a recent firmware update. Now if you try to visit the portal, you just get a Starlink logo. I talk about the recent development in this video.

    I absolute hate this trend of moving more and more services to smartphone apps... It's the same with the shutdown of the Alexa web app. I don't want to use services like that on my phone. Especially not ones that are used for configuring things like smart home devices or routers. Imagine I need to do a really complicated setup with many devices editing a lot of settings and I'm forced to do all that on a small phone. Absolutely ridiculous.

    The word you are looking for is deprecated, not depreciated. Deprecated means removed.

    Considering every other router/modem type device has a web URL for settings, this seems like a change that removes something people expect. Its not like it takes away a developers 100s of hours to keep it updated, its a simple UI.
    The convenient access is sadly missed, I always just hit new tab and open dishy URL when I think I am having a connection issue, I don't want to have to find my phone, type in the pass code, find the app, click on it and wait for it to load, click stats just to see if I am currently having a connection problem or not. Compared to click dishy stats bookmark and done...
    For Starlink being such an amazing life changing and groundbreaking service this just seems a step backwards with no gain and all loss.

    This happened about a year and a half ago too. The work-around that worked back then also works now if all that you want is to display the statistics page: type in the dishy URL as per the video BUT… at the end of the url, enter “/Statistics”, then press enter.
    I like to have the stats page up all the time so that if there is an internet interruption, a quick glance to the corner of my screen lets me know if it’s a dishy problem or not.
    I remember experimenting with other dishy url page names that I guessed would match what they did (i.e. the “/Statistics” html page name led to the actual Statistics page), and was able to find them and display them as well. Haven’t tried that yet as all I want to display are the dishy stats, so YMMV.
    If Starlink’s intention is to fully deprecate the site, this work around may not last, but on the other hand, if they are truly just abandoning the site (which is actually hosted within the physical dish), there is no reason why it shouldn’t last for at least the life of your current dish. 😅

      I tried that as well, still no luck. Just the logo appears, nothing else loads. I remember that the URL dishy.starlink.com used to auto redirect to dishy.starlink.com/statistics. But even directly typing in the /statistics URL does not work anymore. If you have the URL showing right now, don't reload, might not be available anymore!

    I can't use a smartphone to access dishy because i dont own a phone that has the hardware capability so it wont allow me to even download the starlink app. Not sure what i'm supposed to do now

    This is a horrible decision to deprecate this... How are we supposed to login to a starlink system on a spoke site via management network? This makes NO sense and I am upset over this. This NEEDS a management UI.

    Sad if it's gone for good. Using the app is not an issue for me. It was just too convenient to click on a web tab, do a quick check and carry on. I am not tethered to my phone like a majority of the modern world. Perhaps it'll be an inconvenience, but not a deal breaker. Thanks for the heads up! Nice job on the video.🙂

    regarding WEB UI etc .. is there something useful if I activate DEV mode in the app ?

    • @StarlinkHardware
      @StarlinkHardware  4 месяца назад

      I don’t think so. Dev mode in the app doesn’t unlock any features and is mainly for app dev testing as far as I know.

    SpaceX decided to discontinue the old dishy URL in order to enhance the privacy and security of Starlink access. This was implemented to prevent unauthorized access and potential exploitation of the system by hackers who could exploit vulnerabilities through the URL while connected to Starlink. As a precautionary measure, SpaceX limited access to the URL exclusively to administrators only.
    This is what SpaceX support sent me

    It's a big deal. Some of us out there aren't tethered to a ridiculous "smart phone", or... have phones that don't have the RIGHT KIND of compass on the phone. Some of us don't endeavor to be part of the herd of neck-strained goofs in the world.

    I suspect a browser compatibility issue since the last update?

    • @StarlinkHardware
      @StarlinkHardware  4 месяца назад

      Could be, I will try that. I also read a report today that a new firmware update fixed the issue, so maybe the comments I saw about support saying it was being disabled were not true after all. I haven't received that update yet, so it's still not working through FireFox or Safari.

    • @StarlinkHardware

      I’m not 100% sure, but you could try with Global Roam if you can source a Starlink from any other country. Potentially Regional Roam if you can source it from a country in the same continent.

    I requested Starlink to have it removed because anybody connected to the network can access that portal and has an option to reboot and stow Starlink dish which interrupts the internet for all connected users.

    • @StarlinkHardware
      @StarlinkHardware  4 месяца назад

      True, but it's also true of the Starlink app. Anyone with the Starlink app can reboot your dish or stow, if they can connect to your network.
