This was an insightful video, thank you! I struggle with anxiety around perfectionism/making mistakes in all aspects of life pretty much; less so in painting, more so in academics/work. It's something I've addressed with several therapists with not a lot of luck. You just helped me make a breakthrough in this anxiety in a way my therapists haven't. Thanks again.

I'm SHOOKETH at how you started the painting by fearlessly applying yellow all over the paper then blobs of pink and blue randomly, and it just comes out as a beautiful masterpiece. Whilst I tried to paint a SIMPLE flower and the whole thing went south!!! 😭😩 Thank you for the video, Mako!👍🏻

Thank you Mako. I've been experiencing this and it's getting really bad recently. I just graduated from a really difficult 4 yr physics degree (that i didn't even want to do) and am struggling to find a job, even in retail. I haven't drawn in maybe a week now cos of the "keeping safe" mentality you mentioned, also cos I'm diagnosed with depression and anxiety, my fear and comparing with others and perfectionism is really bad.
Sorry for waffling... Just want to thank you Malo c:

Someone who has graduated from a 4 year physics degree that you didn't even want to do..I want to say to you that says to me that you are a smart tenacious person, capable of a great deal! Many people can't stick at a course that have chosen, never mind one as difficult as physics.
So look at yourself in the mirror, and say to yourself...well done! And know that when we compare ourselves, we tend to only focus on the best in that other person, we don't look at their imperfections...be the best version of yourself and that is enough.
So hold your head high, you have a lot to offer...do what you can for now and be kind to yourself and others ..

Thanks for this piece. I deal with the issue of perfection by simply saying to myself “I’m going to paint a BAD watercolor painting, so there ! “. This helps me avoid disappointment by lowering my expectations. Sometime I’m surprised by how good the finished product is. I admit this a weird approach, but the goal of perfection isn’t a problem.

This is just what I needed....Ive been feeling intimidated by watercolors since quite a few months now and I used to look at my previous work wondering how in the world was I the one who made them!?! I had even switched to digital work thinking that has more control. But just yesterday I came across tutorials for mini watercoloring paintings. They were perfect for me to start over and leave some of the fear behind. Watercolor is an incomparable medium with the way water works. So glad to be able to feel a bit confident again! Looking forward to the next video mako ^_^

People should think about why they watercolor and be honest with themselves. Art really isn’t something your pursue for fame and money. If you’re trying to be able to copy the work of others where is your own voice? Ask yourself do you create watercolors because it relaxes you? Because there’s a visual in your head you need to put down on paper? Is there a need in your life for artistic expression? Are you just bored and it’s something you enjoy to fill the time? I’m new to watercolor and there have been some techniques and works that I’ve done very well in a short amount of time, but there are others I know I need to improve. Part of conquering your fear is being honest with yourself about why you’re doing something and what you get out of doing it, what you hope to get out of it, and what you are and aren’t willing to do to continue with your craft.

  • @kunfupapa8162

This fear comes from the results people see on videos (or elsewhere) compared to the results they actually get... Because, in my experience, watercolor is difficult until you find the right pencils, the right paper and the right watercolor paint. Technique comes easy with the right equipment. I tried affordable travel kits that were very good. On the other hand, I tried professional watercolor that were not so good. Same for the paper : 100% cotton don't always work with the paint you choose. So, if you don't use exactly what's been used by the artist you take inspiration from, you will have to try several combinations (pencils, paper, paint) in order to get the same results. Unless you're very lucky or very skillful ! For example, the wet-on-wet technique used at the beginning of this video had me struggle when I used my travel kit on 25% cotton paper. But, paint tubes (as used in this video) did bring the right effect on the same paper. That's why watercolor can be expensive if you have to try things out, because not everything works the same. My advice for beginners : You might be disappointed if your watercolor set does not allow you to get the results you've been shown.
