Man this game actually holds up graphically, I mean it's dated but it's not bad. I have good memories for this game. It was my first multiplayer race experience. The lobbies where great.
This is the game of my childhood. I remember the day i got it for my birthday and the late nights i spent with my best friend playing this game, especially in splitscreen mode. It brings back many good memories and moments. Back then, this game was a big deal with his physics, graphics, various vehicles, and tracks. In short, it's a game that market my growing up! Nice Video!
i just randomly search up this game because i suddenly remembered that i used to play this back when we only had a crappy laptop. this game ran so well while having quite decent graphics despite its light load. glad to see it still having a fan base up to this day!
As an Australian, my main focus was on the V8 Supercars. And with it being officially licensed, I loved having all the cars and tracks from the then current season. You could set up a full season with practice, qualifying and then full length races. So for me, everything else in the game was a bonus, and the main focus, the V8 series, was heaps of fun. I still play it all the time.
good review! The major difference with ANY modern game is the UX design of its interface. It is simple, you don't need to catch the mouse and try to point an option that has a tiny font. Everything is commanded by keyboard's arrow keys, enter and escape. This make not relevant things much more faster to pass through and go to real action faster. The online mode is really really fun and fast to connect and play. As a simcade, you must drive perfect, because any mistake makes others behind to reach you easily. Races start immediately, the gaming dynamic is really enjoyable. The tracks are a lot and equal to the real life ones. It's not an impossible game, 100% of its career mode can be completed. There is a discord community and a couple of modders. There are nowadays a bunch of nice pleople playing online and having fun, and some of them are really good! it is like going to play to your neighborhood basketball court :)
eeeeee, excited to see your thoughts on Grid! I replayed it as well earlier this year and thought it held up very well. With a few mods to improve graphics and the AI somewhat, I think it was even a small improvement.
I can’t wait! I will probably play the vanilla version, although if that strange brown filter I seem to remember begins to get annoying we might look into getting rid of it 😂. Will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the game as I go through it, see how similar or different our experiences are.
My first driving game was Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II. Showing my age 😂Toca was amazing at the time, spent so much time playing that game. Like u mentioned the variety of cars and tracks felt unlimited. Great vid as always, take care 👍
Great review. Totally agree with everything you said. I dug it out last night for a bit of nostalgia. I've been to many race meetings around the world and I've never seen women dressed like that en masse 😂
This is the best Codemasters game and one of my favorite racing games of all time. Gameplay feels like a perfect balance beetween arcade and simcade. The raceevents feel like a real motorsport event and not like a netflix show. ( Even with good old Ricky) And lot´s of real Racing cars, championschips and tracks ( I don´t like "fake" championchips like in the recent Grid games or fake cities tracks) Oh and i like graphics ( PC) from this era. I don´t know why but they have a special look i miss today. can´t describe it right.
This was actually the game on which I learn different tracks. Including the good, small British tracks like Snetterton, Donington Park, Cadwell, and so on (!)
this is hands down the best all-around racing sim of all time. when i think of codemasters, THIS is what i think of. it was so cool that they included ALL forms of racing. they didnt get high and mighty or elitist- but they really showed that it takes real skill to be fast in many different genres- which holds true in the real world like when you watch a seasoned F1 driver have a hard time being competitive in an indycar. or watching an oval champion be slow in an open wheeler. my next goal is to get TOCA RD3 working on the steam deck!
Quite a few people have mentioned the online play to me, it’s the one part of the game I never managed to get working. Sounds like it was a lot of fun at the time!
Awesome video! Loved Toca 1,2 and 3 back in the day. Recently downloaded 1 and 2 again and been having blast playing them. They're also compatible with Openspy (Gamespy replacement) so multiplayer works as well :D
There's one detail that always bothered me about this game: The AI cannot wreck their cars. You can lose a wheel but they cannot. That's just so unfair.
I personally still play this game with fov fixes and a vulkan translator for my rig. Its honestly pretty fun, Flawed but fun. I enjoy modern racing games but recently my interest has fallen off a cliff. I liked Grid Legends and the new GT but I kinda stopped playing them for whatever reason. I still find a reason to play the older Codemaster games.
I've actually returned to this game in 2019 for another reason: I wanted to finally beat it. And despite the last step of career mode was way too difficult I managed to do so by achieving couple of wins by having 10 seconds faster pit stops by just splashing a litre of fuel.
That’s awesome to hear! Well done on winning that final tier, it sounds like you did it the only way possible 😁 I gave it a good go in the last episode of my play through series.
@@TraxionGG Thanks! I saw that video yesterday. You did really great with some of the point scores and overall with handling the car. If you would try it again and grind the qualifying laps, I bet you could win it as well!
I played this game religiously til like 5 years ago when i got ps4. Absolute classic. The ai wasnt great, but i loved it compared to gt4 lol. At least the drivers could keep up, until you took the lead, then it was like they gave up. Gt4 was fun for hotlaps, but the racing was nonexistent. I played toca to race. And it was fun. You just gotta learn the ais quirks and tendencies, its kinda just like real life where some drivers are maniacs and others arent lol. I always raced v8 supercars full seasons (always trying to get a stone bros 1-2 lol) and the international v8s 5 laps w/ pits. Or id do world/national gt seasons in the tvr. Usually like 5-10 laps with pitstops. The vette was a good car too. Just watch out for the holden/pontiac thing when you lap him lol idk what that car was ever doing haha. Palmer audis and the little jaguar lmps were really fun. Stock car/trucks and indycar were actually really fun at indy. Set the ai on 120 (i always had it up), 2-3 laps, start last and see if you can do it lol gotta draft and pass everyone just right to pull it off. Had some absolutely epic wins doing that i still have a few replays saved lol. And the wrecks were pretty lifelike for the time and lord knows i had some wild ones like when my damn teammate marcos ambrose taking me out at phillip island really bad 😂 i still remember screaming his name at the tv as he started to spin me and then i got destroyed by the pack following us 🤣🤣🤣
Amazingly that replay issue existed in the OG Toca 2 as well! (not Race driver!) The replay bar used to turn pink and purple instead of green (almost like it was warning that the replay file was corrupted)
Despite its problems I still feel TOCA 3 is worth playing in 2021, not with a wheel, but with a controller, and pro handling off. The game is so much more enjoyable and consistent if played this way. The "simulation" aspect of the game is a total mess, but the "start last and overtake everyone in 3 laps" is still very enjoyable and fun. It's sad this series have come to an end already but i'm super excited to see you wiping the floor with Ravenwest on Racedriver GRID(or the other way around haha).
I have to say, having recorded some of those extra gameplay clips for this video with a controller, I think it feels really good! This was even with simulation mode on. Would be interesting to see how Laptimes would compare between wheel and controller, both on pro simulation mode…. Especially in the cars that felt awful! 😂
I'm just replaying this and don't agree. Although the game also is very playable with a controller, I used one for the first few races before setting up my wheel, it's even more enjoyable with one. I also don't like the non pro driving model because even in "pro" mode the game still feels very forgiving in comparison to other games. That said it definitely doesn't feel to casual, at least with the "pro" handling model enabled.

Last time I went back to the old ToCA racers I found Race Driver 2 much more fun. Why? Two reasons one, the physics are much, much better, especially on prosim. 3 has this weird steering laziness/filtering that makes it good for digital inputs but kinda crap for anything analog. 2 doesn't have any of this. In fact, RD2 was IMO the best in the series to play on a FFB wheel. (until 2019) Two, the AI. In 3 the AI will almost never give you room and their cars don't move a lot meaning most contact ends up with you spun. In 2 this is not an issue, AND the AI actually races you and leaves racing room.

Having played both the PS2 and the PC version, I can tell you the PC version's handling is way worse than the PS2. The AI being unable to take some corners and the random understeering for no reason? It doesn't exist in the PS2 version. The graphics take a hit obviously, but the physics are way way better!
Play GRID2019 it uses same physics as f1 and rally2.0 it’s good use controller and set liniarity to 9 and sensitivity to 3 and it feels sim you can prob do similar thing with wheel to add weight

The main problem with this game is that a lot of cars are buggy. Some turning by themself, one cant take slow turns like in spa (i used the handbrake everytime to make it turn), the nascar can only take corners 2 times slower than the AI... Also, the game is impossible to complete, since a F1 race towards the end at silverstone is impossible to pass, because the tyres are demolished in a few corners by usure, so the car cant turn anymore lol. People who say they finished the game, I dont believe you. This game is way too buggy and the story mode has no scenario and lack a lot of cutscenes compare to the 1 & 2.
