Another song you guys might want to listen to that touches on MLK is "Pride (In the Name of Love)" by U2. Third verse lyrics:
    "Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride"
Maybe you could save this song for April 4.

    • @caseymoe816
      @caseymoe816 3 месяца назад

@@jamiAkos You would be referencing the work of South African academics Ashwin Desai and Goolam Vahed, who spent seven years exploring the complex story of a man who lived in their country for more than two decades - 1893 to 1914 - and campaigned for the rights of Indian people there while not supporting or defending the rights of black South Africans. Despite their reservations about the 'man of Empire' in his youth Desai and Vahed acknowledge that Gandhi "did raise universal demands for equality and dignity.” Perhaps he learned from his younger experience.
Even the greatest men are flawed. And Gandhi was possibly no exception.

My parents were in college at Morehouse College (my dad) and Spelman College (my mom) at the time that Dr. King was a student at Morehouse. My mother had a class with him and described him as quiet and shy, and she was always amazed at what a powerful, eloquent and totally inspiring person he turned out to be. Some years later, my parents took my sisters and me to an event on the Morehouse campus, and we were introduced to this wonderful man. It is one of my most cherished memories. During this time of unrest and division, I hope that people are able to think upon the lessons of love and unity that Dr. King taught us all. We need to do this in order to survive. Stevie Wonder, who is about the same age as I am, is also a person to be admired for so many things. This includes his willingness to advocate for those who need to be uplifted and inspired. Way back in 1987, I went to a celebration of Dr. King's life here in Toronto on January 15, long before it was finally made a holiday in the U.S., and I remember not understanding at all how anyone could be opposed to it. I still have a cassette I bought that day with all of his recorded speeches that I listen to sometimes, to remember both how far things have come, and how much more work still needs to be done. We had program at university I worked at (just retired) for MLK Day, a week of service in the community by our students. We celebrated him every day as he was part of a large Peace Mural on campus.

Love, love, love! There is nothing not to love about this. ❤️❤️❤️ Now you have the context to listen to and/or sing this song on Martin Luther King Day and on birthdays. It’s on the playlist at our house for those occasions, too. Enjoy this day as we reflect on the ways we must all work together for peace, understanding, and justice.

Love this tribute and I hope he was with you as you showed this video. My mom used to cry when they showed speeches from him, President John Kenedy. and others. It was a touching moment in United States History. The mid-1960's.

If you have not ever read Martin Luther Kings "I have a Dream" speech and I mean read it and not listen to it, you should. I believe this is essential to truly understanding the mind of this great man. God bless all of you.

Very nice! Something I have made a personal tradition on MLK Day for more than 30 years is to read Dr. King's "Letter From Birmingham Jail". It's not that long, easily read in 15 minutes or so. If you've not read it, or you read it long ago and don't remember it, perhaps you'll take the time to read it today. It's easy to find online, if you're interested.

To see the joy at the realization, made this old man tear up for sure. Check out Fngertips, when he was Little Stevie Wonder. Was 11? Btw, it is all harmonica.

I hope you will follow this up with Harry Belafonte’s “Abraham, Martin & John”. Belafonte was very active with Dr King and recorded a touching tribute to the slain leaders who each affected civil rights in their own way, but were killed before they could complete their missions.

    Glad you loved this ❤.
When I first heard this in 1980, when it came out I played it constantly. I was 18, living at my parents in England. One memorable night, that my entire family has never let me forget, I came home after a few beers and silently made my way to my room, as the rest of the house was asleep. I put my headphones on and put this single on very loud through my headphones as i lay in bed..a last listen before sleep. Suddenly I was aware of the light to my room going on, opened my eyes and saw my dad in his pyjamas mouthing at me, but couldn't hear him over the music. I pulled my headphones off to find I hadn't plugged them in fully and Stevie was blasting out of my speakers at around 1am!! 😂.
My very tolerant father was not amused and im reminded of this by him every time he hears it 😂.
I must have woken the entire street! 😂.
    Beautiful song and great reaction.
    Love and laughter ❤

You guys make me smile everyday ☺! I am 59 years old and I don't ever remember hearing this BEAUTIFUL tribute to an OUTSTANDING American in its entirety and I have TRULY missed out until today. I thank you and my fellow sister and brother subscribers for making this an amazing day! I can't believe I somehow slept on one of Stevie's amazing songs. Shame on me! Y'all keep doing you and I'm here for the long haul! (Tears streaming down my face and all. Lol) 👍❤
