I finished the course, uploaded my explosion to my channel. :) First of all, thank you so much, this was a great course. It is really fast paced compared to other tutorials here on RUclips, which I personally think is perfect, just straight to the point and no small talk. +1. I did take some notes of some "problems" I had, which could help others perhaps.. (Disclaimer: NONE of the following notes have had a negative impact, the course is great and I highly recommend it!) These notes are more like a confused beginners insecurity 🤣 1. During the Smoke simulation basics (and other simulations) I experienced the Source Volume and Target Field which is supposed to have Density and Temperature in them by default, I had to write them in manually. Same with the velocity, I had to write v and vel in them manually (even though we deleted them afterwards). - As a first timer of Houdini, this confused me for a few minutes but eventually I figured out I just had to type it in. (Maybe there's a setting I didn't have enabled?) 2. Explosion Simulation Part 1, there was a difference in the voxel size and particles. During the explosion simulaiton, Erik has his voxel size at 0.15 which resulted in 1,685,660 particles. I had a voxel size of 0.1 and had the same amount of particles? - This just confused me, as I tried to follow the course 100%, didn't have a negative impact at all tho. Also, Erik has his Operations on +3 by default, I had none. I had to press the + sign manually 3 times, it just confused me a little as I've never really used Houdini before. (most likely just a difference in the versions of Houdini we use). 3. I don't think Houdini Apprentice allows for compositing? I couldn't create a comp node in the /img section and Google wasn't a help either. So I had to do my compositing in Davinci Resolve. I'm unsure if I did something wrong here, but I did try to do the exact same thing as Erik, but I just couldn't get access the compositing in Houdini. Conclusion: I learned A LOT, can't really remember that much of it right away, but watching the course back again, I understand what is going on a lot more and I think it's a great help for beginners. I highly recomment it to anyone who have been looking for "their chance" to get into Houdini. Can't wait for the future courses. :)
Wow this feedback is incredible Oliver! I really appreciate it! When I get back from vacation I’ll take a look at all the points and try to add text to the videos to make sure others don’t run into the same issues. Could you clarify what you mean by the “operation” part, I’m actually not too sure what you’re referring to? Thank you so much for taking the course and taking the time to write this up. Your end result looks amazing! I really like the way you composited it. I wish you good luck on your Houdini learning journey :)
@@erikdoesvfx Thank you so much, I will 100% be looking forward to future courses, this was amazing to follow! About the "operations issue", in the "Explosion Sim Part 1" episode, exactly 2 minutes in, when you set the "Initialize" in the volumesource1 from 'Initialize' to 'Source Smoke', the Operations in the bottom of the same window goes from 0 to 3. In my case, the "Initialize" was already set to Source Smoke and the operations didn't change (there was no option to set it to 'initialize' either. I had to manually click the + button 3 times. Not that it's an issue for me, but it surely got me confused for a few minutes 😂 I appreciate your comment as well, thank you for your kind words!
@@createdbyoliver Ohh I see! What version of Houdini are you using? For older version I know you have to first set it to something else than "Source Smoke" then back to "Source Smoke" and it should work!
This is so great for a tutorial at this price. I think it would be better if you could also include the process of compositioning live action videos in the Houdini with camera mapping. I also bought this paid tutorial.
Thank you so much for the support and glad you enjoyed the course! I plan on making future courses showing how to composite a render onto live action video. I wanted to start simple in this into course, as there is plenty to learn with just using the software :)
@@erikdoesvfx You're right. The Houdini has so much to learn. Among them, I think the course you're really good at is using live action videos to compose. If your course comes out again, I'll buy it! I can't wait for your next course!
I’m so glad to hear that! I might make a transformers live action course next. If you’d like to leave a review on the course, I’d really appreciate it, and it would help me out :)
@@erikdoesvfx I'm really looking forward to it! I've already left a review on your course! I think it would be nice to include a method for camera mapping with a houdini! I know that the texture of the ground is split in live action video or it uses camera mapping, but I'm really curious about how to use a houdini
Welcome to the RUclips world.
I wish you all the success in the world. I'm sure you're gonna crush it👍🏻
Woahh you've finally made a course!! This looks SICK🔥
Thank you so much!!
