  • Here is a short video about how I bend planks for my ship models.
    🌐English subtitles.
    🎤English audio comments.
    Today, I wanted to try a small experiment, and it's not about experimenting with ship models. I used the capabilities of artificial intelligence to voice the comments that I usually only write in captions.
    In this short video, I want to share with you a more detailed explanation of how I bend planks for the final planking of my ship models. I will provide you with more information about a simple device that I made for this purpose. I hope this video will be helpful to you.
    Enjoy!

    I use ammonia. Soak for a few minutes and the bend can be very radical. Dry the wood piece out before CA glue is used to avoid foaming and permit good adhesion.
    I use strongest ammonia available on the market shelf. VENTILATE !

    • @shipmodelideas
      @shipmodelideas  Год назад +2

      VENTILATE - thats the key issue with ammonia approach. Unfortunately ventilation and smells is a problem for my workshop. So I have to look for “green” ways 😉
      And ammonia itself does not resolve the problem of right bending direction (“bulging”)

    Wetting and a soldering iron eliminates all this. Free form and eyeballing with this method is fast and easy. Michael

    • @shipmodelideas
      @shipmodelideas  2 месяца назад

      Dear Michael, thank you for your comment. It would be great if everything were as you write. In practice, using a soldering iron, an iron, or even a metal desk lamp are well-known and accessible old-school techniques that work, but in some cases, they do not provide optimal results.

    Thanks! Perfect timing for me as I will soon be doing the second planking on a model ship and didn't want to do fillers/stealers on that layer. The first planking layer - don't care since it is a hidden support layer for the top planks.
    Your real voice is fine/better and if I have any trouble with your accent, closed captioning will work if I miss a word or phrase.

    • @shipmodelideas
      @shipmodelideas  3 месяца назад

      Definitely, you can! My first version of the tool was made even without a CNC. I simply glued thinner planks to thicker bars using cyanoacrylate to ensure some level of water resistance. The thickness of the thinner planks should be slightly greater than that of the planks you're planning to bend. 😉

  • @martf3129

    another vote for natural! Would it be an improvement to have the two ends of your bender being able to pivot a little?

    • @shipmodelideas
      @shipmodelideas  6 месяцев назад

      This depends on the task you have. In my case it was enough to have this curvature. Anyway, even after plank is bent, you still have an opportunity to play with its curvature when attaching it to the hull.

      Yes, in principle it works, but you have to slightly change a device. I quickly made a kind of it for 1 mm thick plank here:

    • @shipmodelideas

      Если обшивка двуслойная, сперва делается черновая обшивка более толстыми планками, обычно из липы. На черновую обшивку клеится чистовая.
