Embossing Patterns in to Leather

- In this video we look at the process of embossing leather. We look at various different methods used to put a pattern or texture on to the surface of plain veg-tanned leather. We look at using small items, including a maker’s mark stamp, wax seal stamps and everyday objects to add a simple design to the leather’s surface. We then look at using embossing folders to texture larger pieces of leather. We show the use of the Sizzix Big Shot Pro die cutting and embossing machine.

I am so pleased to see someone else using small papercraft dies, embossing folders and a Sizzix BigShot machine for leatherwork as well! I thought I was the only one! I am not artistic enough to do my own tooling, so this gives me a helping hand 😃👍
Yes. It is a very versatile machine and often overlooked by leatherworkers.
I almost can't believe I found this. I have been paper crafting for years and have many, many embossing folders, dies, stamps and inks. I have a Sizzix Big Shot Plus. I recently purchased small leather labels for quilting labels (I also sew) and was searching for how to make them myself. Bingo, I can do this with what I already have. Thanks so much for sharing your craft.
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for your video. I have all the tools I need to do this and can't wait to play. I have been paper crafting for years, but have also been sewing for years so I have a Kamsnaps snap press with flat attachments I can use instead of an arbor press. I was first thinking of using my little mini vise grip, which would be a super inexpensive tool to get for this. That's when I realized my snap press would work so well. I do have a 3D printer so this has really opened up a whole new rabbit hole!!!
which 3D printer do you have, I'd love to cut my own stamps and printing plates.
@@kbaxterpackwood I have an AnyCubic Chiron
@@SDIVADesigns do you also have a Cricuit or a Silhouette Cameo? And if so which do you use more the 3D printer, or both equally?
@@kbaxterpackwood I have a cricket, silhouette and GCC puma, but these are completely different types of machines from a 3-D printer. 3-D printers create shapes with three dimensions and paper or vinyl cutters just cut out flat shapes.
I have a ton of cutting dies and embossing folders in my stash. I have not heard anyone suggesting using them with leather until now. You are brilliant!
Thank you. Yes, it's great that you can use your existing dies and folders on leather too.
you can also use them on metal sheet as well!
@@kbaxterpackwood Can confirm, I love it on leather! I am going the metal too, thank you for the suggestion!
Probably the Most helpful Leather Craft video I've seen. Thank you.
Wow, thank you!
Hi...just found your channel. Thanks so much for the info. I'm new to stamping die cutting. Bought a Sizzix the other day & checking all sorts of videos. Now I can add leather work also. I'll check others of your videos.😊
The sky is the limit as long as you have flat stock. If you have a bench vise with brass jaws, it would work. Arbor presses can range from 1,000 pounds to 50,000 tons of pressing power. You wallet will determine what you purchase. If a local repair shops close or mechanics shop, these item are common tools and bidding at a live auction can be fun. Just don’t get carried away. If you weld, or know someone who does, simple shapes can be cut, welded on outside corners (Making it Easy to Dress by Grinding) or put a consistent sharpe edge on the pieces. You can emboss as long a practice with the leather you will use provides the results desired. Nice job introducing use to this decorative leather making style! Thanks.
Thanks for the info.
I like the use of non traditional leather stamps for impressing!

I’m new to leather making, recently saw the Big Shot on a RUclips, did more research and this is how I found you. Thank you for your video! It is so well presented; very clear even for a beginner like me. Super informative. I will be seeing you again!
Hi! I’m Erica from the US! I just happened to see this on RUclips & I was so excited to see you using card-making supplies! Never in a million years would I have thought that I could use leather in my crafts! I have dozens of embossing folders including the newer 3-D ones, hundreds of dies & both of the exact models of die cutters that you used! I have quite a few of the thicker steel rule dies, too! And now that I’m thinking about it, I have always read that they could be used with leather, I just never thought about following through on that, though! I own lots of wax seals, also, so I’m in good shape there, also! I’m going to look on Amazon for leather, I believe you used a 2mm thickness, so I can probably try this in a couple of days! Haha, this is amazing! And with the new 3-D folders, we even give the card stock a quick spray of water for the same suggestion: to soften the paper fibers! Now we have been told (by Tim Holtz, the Ranger/Sizzix guru) to run those embossing folders 3 times through the machine. Perhaps you have experimented with those folders, too? I have “liked & subscribed” (& since I’m very active on RUclips perhaps more people will see you because of my activity!) Thank you so much, I have a whole lot of new ideas to try & I will look for more videos now! Erica❤
I’ve just started out in leather working ,mainly making knife sheaths I’ve been looking at embossing stuff I make but been a little unsure of how to go about it,your video has helped me so much get my head around it thank you.

Hi Pamela. You are so welcome!
I am so pleased to have found this tutorial, because I have this Big Shot Pro too and have searched the Sizzix videos, Spellbinders, Tim Holtz and Eileen Hull videos without finding the most effective sandwich to cut my leather. It would just not go through and 'bite'. You have explained it perfectly and shown the sandwich in clear detail, much appreciated. It's taken a Geordie to show a Mackem how to do it! Incidentally, I've been die cutting cardstock reasonably okay with my Bigz dies but when it comes to leather, the scoreboards are cutting through the scored areas too so wondering what the best sandwich is...

Sir i just found your channel and I shared your channel on Reddit for beginner leather crafting I found your channel by accident and I love the depth of teaching you go into. By chance are you going to continue making videos
Hi Dakota. I have replied to your personal email.
Just found your channel, and it's a gold mine! I'm very new to leather, in fact, I really don't work in leather, but am making small leather items from finished leather. I'm learning the hard way that you can't use a metal leather stamp on finished leather, no matter how hard you pound. But all I have is finished leather! a LOT of it! Do I heat up the metal stamp and use an Arbor Press? Should I wet the finished leather first?
Hi. I’m assuming by ‘finished leather’ you mean upholstery leather. The type used to make sofas? If so, then this type of leather has been tanned chemically and generally can’t be ‘tooled’ ( It can’t be stamped, carved or otherwise worked with leather tools.) You need natural veg-tanned leather if you want to tool it. Hope this helps.
I had no idea that a cutting die could be used in one of those craft machines! That's kind of a 'game changer' for the leather hobbyist. All your perfectly arranged and squeaky clean leather supplies behind you make me smile. I love that! It's my goal to have a workshop like that. Did you use that nylon roller to cut leather on the dies before getting the cutter? I have a key fob die that is supposed to be used with a nylon roller, but I haven't tried it yet.
Hi. I've used the press for all of my die cutters from day one - It just makes sense!
Thanks so much. Your video was extremely informative. Is it possible to do embossing of a softer leather?
Hello Jennifer. Yes, you can but the impression won't be as crisp.
Very good I would use an acrylic plate that you get with the machine and also damp the leather a wee bit. Maybe you've tried that . I think the plastic embossing folder would last longer. 🐕👍
Thanks for your input. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Sir, you are a great man ❤️
I have A question
this way to empossing on the leather remains for a long time, or disappear with the days

It is permanent.

Hi. Thank you for your concern. I am struggling with some health issues at the moment. I am uncertain when/if I will be able to return to making more videos. Take care.
Bumboy.
TY! But where do I get the carving stamps???
I used your amazon affiliate links to help you out brother!! Thanks! Can't wait for your foil videos. Do you use an arbor press for that too?
Hi. Thanks for your support. I will be showing the use of the Hot Foil Stamping machine next.
What a clever way to save money and obtain an amazing work! Thank you very much Geordie for sharing this! I do have a question about the leather after embossing it... Do you use something to protect it? Do you treat the leather in any way?
Thank you again! God bless you and have a nice day!
Hi. You just treat the leather like any other piece of veg tan. You can dye it just as normal and apply whatever finish you like to it.
Love watching your videos and you have got me very interested in making key rings. What would the best thickness of leather be to make keyrings please and where is the best place to buy leather. Looking forward to watching your next video.
Hi. The thickness would be depend on the design. A key fob folds two layers, whereas a key strap is a single layer. As a general rule, I'd say the finished thickness should be around 3-4mm thick. I'm in the UK and I buy my leather from LePrevo Leather.
Hi what is the plate you are using as a base on your Arbor press?
Can you tell me where you found the daschund template? I have one of those precious puppies and would love the die cut.
Hi. Just search eBay for 'Daschund Cutting Die' and you'll find lots of designs. I have a Daschund to - Lovely dogs.

Hi would it be possible to colour or dye the embossed design, if so with what so that it only goes into the impression parts of the design? I'm uk based. Thanks
Dye would spread, but you could use acrylic paint for leather.
@@HobbyBloxs thank you for responding.
Love the videos, looking forward to the foil video, quick question what thickness of leather would you recommend to make a keyring?
Thank you for your comment. I'm just clearing out my inbox of old comments, so there is no need to reply to this. Thanks. Geordie.
Hi Geordie, thanks for the advice on the plastic embossing plates, I have looked at those in the craft shops and wondered if the would be ok on Leather, now I know. Also good idea on the paper cutting dies as well, I shall give that a go.
I have had very good success with some embossing small items with salvaged items from building sites, much like the metal plates you have, although I dont have a mangle like yours, although that is a cool idea. I simply used some plywood offcuts to provide the hard surface and using some quick clamps to provide the pressure, and left for a while to take the form. A simple and cheap alternative for novice crafters such as myself.
I have also had good results with using rubber card making stamps and Archival ink for personalising, and embellising some pieces
Are there any other alternative tools, or techniques that you use? Perhaps if so, it could be a good video to share.
Hi. Thanks for your comment. Yes, you are right - there are many different things around you that can be used to emboss in to leather.
you put the piece of leather onto the machine to be pressed, does that bottom plate come with the machine or is it something you put on yourself, reason being as i looked at a few arbor machines and they dont have the square plate, thanks

Will this be a permanent one?
The impression will be permanent.
Awesome! Hi sir, i just wanna ask if how can i make a custom steel rule die?
Hi. I don't make my own dies. You can get custom made cutting dies on AliExpress.
@@HobbyBloxs I'm wondering if can really make my own dies without any machine because there are no tutorials for that. Do you have a link on AlieExpress to where did you purchase dies? Thank you so much.
Hi ! that cutting machine seems really expensive to me because of how limited it is, I use a press from the bookbindery and I can say that it has several uses, in addition to the fact that I only spent 100 euros on it as it was bought at a flea market, and if you allow me a little advice! when you want to make embossing, put a 1 or 2 millimeter cardboard sheet under the piece of leather, the impression will come out much more pronounced and beautiful because the stamp will not meet the hard surface under the leather but will have a small layer where it sinks
oh, and one more thing, be careful with metal models!!! if the model is made of stainless steel, it's ok. but if it's made of iron! attention that the iron oxidizes immediately on the wet piece of leather and a blackish impression will remain, at least I experienced this and I calmed down... in the best case you can put a thin piece of nylon like the one to wrap
Really it can cut leather by Wood Die Cutter? Die cutter enter on machine? Because Die cutter height is 25mm+ .please let me know I want to buy .
I have big shot plus but don’t work .

Hi,
How can I emboss a figure with hot stamp foil to the patent leather. I tried many times but patent leather did not absorb the hot foil. What should I do?
Hi. It sounds like you are not using a high enough temperature. I suggest you use some scraps of the leather and try using higher temperatures until you get a good impression. You may also need to apply more pressure or hold it for a little longer. It's all experimentation, I'm afraid. When you find the perfect settings for that type of leather, write it down and keep it for future work. Hope this helps.
I can help you. I am hot stamping foil machine Operater
Aren't these techniques debossing rather than embossing?
Yes, you're right.
@@HobbyBloxs so how does one emboss? I see leather with patterns raised up, is it just that everything but those patterns are actually pressed down?
Hi. Yes, that's right: When you deboss, the design is pressed below the surface. When you emboss, the area around the design is pressed below the surface - giving the illusion that the design is raised. I hope this helps.
Very much so. I've been trying to figure out how to "emboss" when it's kind of the opposite. No one else could explain it to me. Thank you so much
