    As backward as it sounds, it is really important to keep your dishwasher clean! Over time, tiny bits of food, grease and soap scum can build up in your dishwasher, causing it to smell bad and lose efficiency. Luckily, keeping your dishwasher clean and running well is an easy process!

    I've been using baking soda and vinegar to clean my drains (kitchen and bathroom) and I haven't needed a plumber in over 16 years. It works very, very good.

    As a former appliance repairman from the 70's, the rule of thumb for hot water temperature inside a dishwasher was a minimum of 140 degrees and a maximum of 160 degrees. These temperatures apply inside the dishwasher, NOT at the sink faucet: Temperatures below 140 degrees will not dissolve the dishwasher detergent nor soften food enough to clean the dishes properly... temperatures 160 degrees or above actually bake the food onto the dishes. So once the dishwasher is filled with hot water and begins its cycle, stop the cycle, open the door and test the water temperature with a thermometer in the sump below the lower dish rack. USE AN OVEN MITT or other hand/forearm protection while holding the thermometer to avoid burns from steam or hot water. Also (very important)... if your dishes are not coming out clean, in addition to removing and cleaning the sump filter below the lower wash arm, check the end holes of the wash arm (they are angled and the water pressure through these holes spins the arm) to make sure food or seeds from fruit have not plugged them. The arm WILL NOT spin if one or both of the end holes are plugged. You will have to remove the lower wash arm to remove whatever food has plugged the holes. LASTLY... (first, shut off power to dishwasher) remove the bottom rack from the dishwasher with the door open in the horizontal position. Use a small mirror to view the inner front edge of the washtub and back lip of the dishwasher door where the two overlap. Stagnant water, soap scum and food accumulate in this area during the wash cycle. You will need to carefully clean this area with a short, soft wooden scraper (a cut down flat wooden paint stirrer beveled on one edge works well) or one made of plastic. From personal experience, the scum buildup looks like mashed, refried beans and is very tacky, so you'll have to wipe the area with paper towels or a soft rag after scraping. This all sounds like a lot of work, but it only takes a short time and will insure your dishwasher works as it was designed to.

    One Affresh tab once each month keeps our dishwasher sparkling and clean!

  • @johnny2970
    @johnny2970 6 лет назад +18

    Please be aware that most, if not all dishwashers, starts off by draining, and does several pre-rinses before the actual washing starts. So dont put anything in until the mainwash starts taking in water, otherwise, it will be flushed out before it actually gets to do its work. Now, if u cant make ur dishwasher skip the prerinses, do as followed: close the detergentdispenser, and stay by the machine and listen. Once the detergentdispenser opens, by the “klonk” u hear, u know the mainwash has started. U can now open ur dishwasher and pour in ur cleaningsolutions for it to get the full effect. If u use the affresh dishwasher cleaning tablets, and it fits in the dispenser, put it in from the start as it wont dispense before its going on mainwash. most dishwashers, again if not all has a buildin heating element, to heat up the water when its needed, so connecting it to cold water is best if u have a gas or electric heated waterheater, as rinses between mainwash and last rinse doesnt need hot water. Connecting to hot water, will cost more, as the hot water taken in by the machine, is replaced by cold water in the waterheater, and it needs to heat all of its content again because the already heated water is cooled down by the cold water.

      Right, but thats why the vinegar is placed in the measuring cup on top rack in first run; the bleach in the measuring cup on top rack in the 2nd rinse...it wont get flushed prematurely. Seems easier than having to stand by the washer for however long waiting for the 'klonk'

    • @davecarsley8773
      @davecarsley8773 2 года назад

      Absolutely terrible advice!!
      The vinegar is put in a cup in the *top rack* (not the detergent dispenser) to avoid the problem you're claiming exists.
      Also... supplying your dishwasher with cold water is an absolutely terrible idea. Read the manual, man! They write those things for a reason. The engineers who decide what temperature water you should use _really do_ know what they're talking about.
      A lot of science and education has gone into how to make your dishwasher clean your dishes without leaving bacteria. It's really odd that you would think _" Oh, they never considered that I could use _*_cold_*_ water to save money. I'm sure it doesn't make a difference. I know more about the engineering of dishwashers than the engineers who made my dishwasher!"_

    To clean a dishwasher to look brand new just put a tea bag in the utensil tray. Tea is acidic and a great cleaning tool. The higher the PH the better. Green tea would work best however I use regular pekoe.

    i read that mixing vinegar and baking soda doesn't do much as the acid in the vinegar is canceled out by the base in the baking soda so its basically just like water. have you heard much about this?

    • @tessadieter1201
      @tessadieter1201 5 лет назад

      Totally accurate!! But like Frank mentions she is using them in 2 different steps. The amount of home cleaning recipes that add vinegar and baking soda to the same bottle drive me up the wall. I will using the foaming action to clean things like my garbage disposal but I let the baking soda sit in there for a while to absorb odors, then I give it a good scrub before pouring the vinegar in to dislodge things I can't or don't care to reach.

    Does it matter if you just run the vinegar and baking soda together?
    Or, together and then just baking soda alone after?
    I ask cause many times people have said to combine the two for other cleaning methods and they normally work well together.

    Having hot water readily throughout the dishwashing cycle can be achieved with a ReadyTemp under sink hot water optimizer connected to a non-electrical spring wound timer connected to the RJ11 on-demand port. Installation is a simple 20 min DIY of connecting 4 hoses and providing power.

    Amazed that this video has over a million hits and hardly anyone is saying that it doesn't work. So here goes: It doesn't work. If you've already got some calcification buildup like I do in my 15 year old dishwasher, this process will not remove that (or at least it didn't in my dishwasher). I tried it with hot water, with cold water, and by canceling the pre-wash cycle by adding twice as much vinegar etc. all to no avail. Makes no difference. So, it might help some in preventing buildup if you do this once a month, but once the build-up is there, does nothing.
