“It’s a completely different ship, they look nothing alike!” So was TMP Enterprise, but that’s still the same ship? Kirk even got lost in the corridors, but it’s exactly the same ship? Like DSC, TMP was it’s own visual reboot: ships, Klingons, uniforms, etc. Comparing the TMP and DSC Enterprises would be better IMO, it wouldn’t be 100% perfect, but they would be far more similar than nitpicking TOS vs DSC.
I've never really liked the TOS connie. The TMP era ship was my gal. Yes it is a nice ship but it's never stuck with me as much as the TMP ship. Discovery captures a mixture of both and I love it.
Have to agree! The original connie just screams 60s era design and didn't come off as a realisitc vision of the future anymore, even by the time TMP came along. They pushed the aesthetic to something that looks more at home in an actual future world. You can't put something that dated looking into a modern tv show and the original definitely shows it's age.
Considering that the Enterprise had been rebuilt in high definition for the TOS blu-rays, the models were available and there was no need to redesign anything.
It's not an intermediate step, it's a redesign. Looks good, imo. I wish DSC would use the NX-01 refit too, since it's already designed and really fits into that line
They did a good job on this. TOS Enterprise was always a little clunky for me. Looks like NX design evolved into Constitution over the decades, which makes sense.
I'm really loving this reimagined design of the original Connie! Fast becoming my favorite! I do agree about the windows though. For the scale the windows are a bit too large. Great review!
I mostly like the Discovery Enterprise. The TMP Constitution refit is, I think, the finest, but it always looked like an entirely new ship as opposed to the TOS model. Fair enough; it was a whole new level of design and budget. The Discovery Enterprise looks like the TMP Enterprise got coherently rewound to pre-TOS design elements. That makes more sense.
As another commenter said, I'd be really interested in seeing a comparison to the TMP Enterprise. There are some other hints (the shape of the hallway in some of the S2 teaser stuff being one) that they're going for a look that's more "TMP meets Enterprise" than TOS.
Stop saying it's a different ship or that it's not prime. IT IS the same, it's just been restyled to fit in with Discovery look and feel. You can really compare them. Like comparing the Fist 500 with the original. Same model but different looks and scale.
Not a fan of the Discovery show however i am in love with this Enterprise redesign reboot or whatever you want to call it. I understand why they have done it. Younger audiences are not going to take the original seriously and they have had to brig it up to real life modern asthetic tastes. I have no problems with this Enterpeise abd it is now my favourite Enterprise after the E. I hope we get this in Online. Comparing the two the Disc Enterprise looks more solid atronger able to take a beating and give it back the TOS ship looks structure wise weak thats down to the 60s design but Disc Ent looks like it could slug it out with a D7 or Warbird. I just love this Constitution redesign you could easily movie era refit this design.
You guys are really digging at the bottom of the barrel, looking for reasons to dislike the reimagined Constitution. It's a beautiful ship and quite functional; while at the same time paying homage to the original. I barely made it to the middle of the video before I realized this was just a b*tch session..
If I designed a ship...it wouldn't look anything like the tos enterprise. But when I think of a starship...I think of the tos enterprise. She's perfect.
Whenever i see the Discovery Enterprise. My mind goes immediatly to when Kirk and the gang first saw the uss Excelsior. Uhura: Would you look at that. Kirk: My friends, the great experiment: The Excelsior. Ready for trial runs. Sulu: She's supposed to have transwarp drive. Scotty: Aye. And if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon. Kirk: Come, come, Mr. Scott. Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant. I try to follow Kirks advice. But sometimes darnit, the Discovery dismissal of all things Canon really irks me. (She is a pretty gal though, aint she)
The ship looks alright, not bad but definitely nothing to be amazed by, we've seen this design a bunch of times, and done in a better fashion, so yeah its not that interesting.
I've lived my Trek life by Kirk's words and IDIC. That's why I've never hated on technology designs. That doesn't help when the stories aren't great though, but every Trek series has its bad egg.
The circle between the impulse engines could be an ejection port in case the need to eject the impulse reactor like you would with the warp core if it was about to blow.
Its like the difference between a 72 Dodge Challenger and a 2018 Dodge Challenger. Yeah looking at the 2018 you think it looks just like the 72....but put them side to side. The new one is bigger, and more different then you think.
yes that is exactly what happened, disrespected cannon. yet we [including trekyards] still patronise this deviation regardless of or if we did not chose to view discovery :::
I've been a Star Trek fan since I saw The Man Trap on my parents tv when I was 6 years old. That was around 1966. I am 60 years old now and I am still a fan. I've enjoyed every story, from Pike to Piccard. I also enjoy the fan made Star Trek productions. Star Trek Continues is one of my favorites, and it keeps the retro vibe of the original series. True fans should appreciate all Star Trek productions. Some more than others, but that's a matter of opinion. . For a fan in a younger age group then myself, it would be difficult to show them a futuristic version of a 1960 Chevrolet and tell them its suspose to be a 2060 Chevrolet. So we need Discoverys version of our 1960 Constitution Class Star ship to keep the stories going
At some point I would like to see the Discovery Enterprise compared to the Refit/TMP Enterprise. Just because the Discovery Enterprise's swept back struts.
I've gotten the impression from all the DSC ships that the they are making look midway between Enterprise and the Movie era. Not sure I agree with the reason, but I do like the look.
Richard Bond Compared to the massive hair dryer nacelle design of the Enterprise in '09 or to the very dainty swan like one at the beginning of Beyond? I'd like to see it compared to both really, but next to the swanlike one i feel like the Discovery Enterprise would be so squat.
S C I have a feeling that if they line the designs side by side with DSC being between TOS and TMP, it'll look like they chopped out bits of neck in a refit before the TMP refit, then realized "hey we can put torpedo launchers here" and so they put a piece back. If they line it up chronologically, DSC, TOS, TMP, i think the odd one out will be the TOS one. But that's just my thoughts on it.
I really love this design, i'm 100% onboard when it comes to the design philosophy of Star Trek: Discovery. I mean the production design have evolved significantly since the 60's and it would feel wierd if they kept the esthetic of the TOS and TNG in a TV-show produced 2018.
it would feel perfect. They kept the name and the characters and the history and the socioeconomic environment and the stories and the sensibility. why on (or off) earth would they not also keep the aesthetic? If you want to make something new then by all means make soemthing new. just don't drag that name into it..
I used to think that the TOS Enterprise was meant to be seen on small standard def 4:3 screen, even DS9's TT episode was before high def 16:9 but I re watched the appearance of the constitution class ship in ENT and it didn't look out of place. They really should have stuck closer to the original design.
You know, the Discovery Enterprise has a kinda NX-01 look to it, especially the saucer part, and has a earlier version look to it compared to the one from the classical series.
true about the saucer part (though the big black circles are overdone and out of place.) but the pylons really suck - too much like the refit, which creates a wierd anachronism. Heres the updated version 20 years before the version that was updated, 5 years before its updated back to the 25 years ago version. just dumb.
Its not just the TOS Enterprise. But I once found that The Discovery- Enterprise design takes elements from both the Matt Jefferies TOS Enterprise, the Ryan Church Kelvin Timeline JJ Enterprise aswell as the NX-01 Enterprise.
Great design save for the squatty dish-to-secondary hull design, the shallower angle of the nacelle pylons. It almost looks from the front like a ratio error on my monitor. And if the ship is supposed to be a lot bigger than TOS 1701, then the windows do not make any sense. Still, better by far to the fat-nacelle 2009 ship. And probably CBS will tweak it a bit. Or find the best 'angles' to shoot it from. Also, I have to remind myself that Disc/1701 isn't the star fo the show. The pizza cutter is!
*CJ Carpenter* "The pizza cutter". LOL! Took me a second to get what you meant and then I could see it in my mind's eye plain as day. Thanks. You gave me a good laugh.
I love the new designs of the ships in discovery, it’s about the only thing I like about the show. I love this updated but faithful (about as close as it will get) version of the original enterprise and it fits perfectly into the Discovery timeline. I never really liked the original enterprise and preferred the motion picture version better. Excited for season 2 discovery leaks.
It's instantly recognisable as a visually rebooted Refit Constitution. Granted that's still better than most of STD but let's not pretend the lady looks like the TOS Enterprise. The Pylons' configuration is too dominant.
Commander Rotal because Discovery IS a visual reboot it was never going to look like the TOS Enterprise the TOS designs are done... these are the new PRIME designs for the era....
Don't be so hasty with that word, "instantly". It looks very NX-01-y, and, until you see the "NCC-1701", you might not know it's supposed to be Captain Pike's Enterprise.
The three front "windows" we're not meant to be windows, they were the original beam emitters for the deflectors, the dish was meant to be the main scanner.
Kevin Jones It's a nice modern era looking design. Dont hang in the past like an sentimental 85 year old grandpa. Everyone who says the discoverie Enterprise is not good looking or not fitting hase serious problems.😬
Feel its the first thing to make the conny look correct to the franchise and not some cheap 60s props floating around on fishing line. Shame not much can be done to fix the TOS era characters. That has already been illustrated with the handling of characters like Mudd and Sarek. Unfortunately this being a CBS product, it falls to the rule of CBS. Anything made by CBS or its affiliates such as showtime are pure garbage.
No we should go back to 60s era flying saucers with other stuff attached to make it look different. It was all the rage back in the summer of love so why should anything change from then. You people are crazy I tell you CRAZY! ...notice the sarcasm?
This is an amazing-looking ship. Gorgeous. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. This is what the Discovery SHOULD have looked like, instead of the horrible triangle garbage that we got. This is IT. It's a nice redesign, clean lines, not too different but not too similar. I really love it. I want a model of it. It's far better than the JJ-Prize.. A wow-esque reimagining of the exact same ship. If I showed this to my non-trekkie friends or to my gf, they would hardly be able to tell the difference. Unfortunately, if the trailer is any indication, we'll be back to ugly costumes, ugly ships and horribly bad-written characters in no time :(
What is the point of the aerodynamics on some areas, like the "fins" on the underside of the nacelles? Seems like they just added parts to give it a more "modern" feel ... I also don't like the overly pointed end to the nacelles. Looks like a fountain pen ...
but the difference is the fact thats a later and "newer" ship and style, tech when it becomes more advanced becomes more stylized, which is what the Soverign class is
That's the whole point, its supposed to look more modernised and high tech, but it comes off as even more older looking than the tos enterprise, due to its hull and outer frame being open.
The three lights on the front were always supposed to be the main front particle deflectors, until the TMP refit, when the sensor dish on the secondary hull was replaced with a larger deflector unit. Many people forget the dish was a sensor, not a deflector in TOS.
Gosh STD enterprise is not a very new model. They just took the TOS version, and made it much more sleek. Cmon u gotta admit the new design looks more durable
I will have to admit. I like it. The Discovery Enterprise looks a lot better than the Jjprise. Still it is not as good as Tos Enterprise. Still I understand the need for the changes.
I think it's a good design leap from the NX to Connie as I don't see much in the way of improving ship design after 84 years! I do like the modern take on the 60s idea just a shame they had to make it so dingy looking!
what would be awesome if they did was in the beginning of season 2 the enterprise gets attacked by klingons and is majorly damaged and then at the end of season 2 they show it leaving space dock looking almost exactly the same as ToS doubt this would happen but it would be awesome.
This just proves that ST: Discovery is about a legal battle rather than canon. Worse it's about a show that wants to stand out rather than fit in. The "homages" to the original show (TOS) and the prime timeline movies don't really help a real fan of the original. This goes for the other ships, uniforms, aliens, etc. The list goes on. The only thing that would save this show even marginally is if the last episode or two totally go back to the original look including ships, uniforms, aliens, etc. and say that Discovery launches into the future never to be seen again while restoring the original look of TOS in the process. Oh, and not make the Klingons look like an entirely different species. Good god people.
I prefer the original design due to the designs presence and boldness. The neck is longer, making it necessary to elongate the nacelles. It's white so it stands out in contrast to space. Granted, lighting then required pointing lights at a model, but the upshot to this was, you could see the ship. It's curve's, it's harsh edges. It contrasted nicely to allow the audience to appreciate the ship, which itself was a character on the show... STD's enterprise, from this image, is hard to make out. It's edge's blend into darkness. CGI wise it's a good model for realism, but not for viewing. It's short neck gives a more streamlined appearance which doesn't project a sense of strength as the originals saucer seems to tower over STD's. I get that this is a re imagining, but I think those making the show have forgotten to keep the audience in mind in the design and presentation of the ship. They need to turn the lights up on that show. Just let us see and appreciate what is on display instead of hiding it. As for the ship being a character, A critique of original and modern Knight Rider has a perspective I think is relevant. In the original, Kitt and the car were characters, and were treated as characters. The modern version, Kitt was treated as a transformer. A convenience. I can't attach as much meaning to the new ship's in STD because they don't give the audience the chance to learn to love them. They exist, then they are gone.
Realism has to play a role though or nobody would buy into it. Discovery has turned out better than I had thought it would be all in all. It does give a more realistic interpretation of actual humans in space and not just the idealistic vision Gene had in mind. Look at it this way: Now they have plans to put out several new shows largely thanks to the success of this show no doubt. I don't know about you but I was dying without some Trek in my life and now we're getting it. It's not what it was, but overall I enjoy it. I was always more of a TNG era guy though, so I don't have the nostalgia for TOS like many fans do. You have to go with the times though, so either lead, follow, or get out of the way are your only options really. I think it's a really cool design though and I would know, just look at my name. I know a thing or two about modern aesthetics and this design is closer to the original than what I would have gone with honestly.
Could you put links to some of the source material in your video "about" section? For example, many times you show something like a graphic that I would love to explore, but I have no idea where. In this case I'd like more info about the imposed design requirements (the what and why they refuse to look like a proper Prime ship).
One flaw I keep noticing on Star trek ships in that the position lights are not nearly bright enough. The position/Nav lights should be THE BRIGHTEST light source is on entire ship. That is the part that is meant for someone to be able to see from far away. Look at airplanes at night for a practical example. Not only are the position and strobe lights the brightest lit parts of the plane, they are usually the only part of the plane you can see at all unless you are right next to it. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I feel this keeps getting overlooked.
I like the redesign mostly but there are additions and changes that make no damn sense, like Cmmdr Cockinngs said, why are those huge windows on the saucer? And I understand why they made the 'neck' shorter, perhaps the taller one is scrawny looking, but they could've kept the height and thickened the neck, the original height is SO much better.
🖖😎👍A very nice and cool looking ship indeed, I think this would of made a great looking refit design for the movies with the blue deflector dish added and the recration area/ botanical garden windows as well, it just has more of the TOS look to it with a major upgrade indeed 👌.
They’re both amazing designs. Personally, I’m on the knife edge of which one I prefer and that’s a great thing because on the one hand, the original design is beautiful and so is the new Discovery version.
In my opinion, that port between the two impulse nacelles on the rear of the TOS Enterprise is a refueling port for replenishment of deuterium or tritium fuel for the fusion reactors to power the impulse drives.
Discovery Enterprise is much more in line with the NX-01 Concept Enterprise. I would like to see a comparison of this Enterprise to the movie refit Enterprise, it might make more sense then IDK.
Has everyone forgotten that in Pike's day, the Enterprise only carried 203 people? On the actual original model, the bridge dome, deflector and other details were replaced with smaller ones for the series to make the ship look "bigger." Window scaling issues aside, I think the altered proportions of this design reflect an attempt to reflect what the "smaller" crew version of the ship would like like compared to the series version. Also, the longer aft undercut has a precedence: The Excelsior, which was an experimental design, also had a long undercut. In front of the undercut is supposedly a cargo bay. With a large crew, Excelsior probably only held supplies for the 3 year mission Sulu mentions. In this case, Pike's Enterprise could have had a longer undercut because it did not need as may supplies for a 5-year mission. Does this design matches The Cage version of 1701 exactly? No, but that is only one episode's visuals to reimagine, and most "flashbacks" to the TOS Enterprise were Kirk's version, not Pike's. Still think Star Trek Discovery must be in a parallel universe, just some thoughts on how this design might fit better than my first impressions.
im a minority here but i enjoy discovery and i like the 'new' enterprise. i didnt' grow up with a lot of star trek like a lot of people but im glad they changed the design. they did it such a way that the are clear links between ENT,TOS and even TMP. furthermore when you look at canon the are Logical in canon explanations as well for why the is vast differences between Discovery enterprise/cage enterprise and TOS enterprise that fit so well. the problem is people are so anal about nostalgia glasses and a refusal to open up theri minds a bit (which btw isn't very trek) they immediately hate it and dont give it a chance.
so many years have past and now they decide to redesign the 1701enterprise. its remarkable really that so much time has gone by. As im sure everyone knows, established designs get 'makeovers' every (max) 10 years to keep the design fresh and resell able. (old car with smaller windows, new car with 10mm larger) etc. the tos ship had remained the same for all this time. Love or hate the disco but just be glad that they're aren't 5+ different versions.
Is it just me or does STD Entperprise looks like a combo of JJverse's and TOS' Enteprise models? Like the saucer design, the bridge capsule is more flat like JJverse, and the the thing underneath the saucher is also more flat.
Another great video guys! I'm honestly not sure about the new Discovery Enterprise. It looks too squashed for my liking. I still prefer the original constitution ship. Tho my favorite will always be the refit NCC 1701 :)
If you look at the side by side views, the new version is obviously not "scaled up" like everyone keeps saying. The windows almost all line up perfectly between the two, save for the 1-deck shorter neck on the STDprise.
It depends on the perspective. For a hardcore TOS fan the Discovery design looks very different. But if you compare both to the Kelvin timeline design, than TOS and Discovery looking much more simular. Concidering the whole Star Trek multivers, these two designs have not more then 25% differents compared to other designs (including the motion pictures).
To Commander Foley. I know that you have built the TOs model in the past. Have you ever considered or tried to put Aztec in on the model? Like different panels.
As I get to see each more. I believe that both ships are the same color. The difference being that Discovery has more realistic lighting for space. If you concentrate on the highlights of Disco Enterprise, the hue is the same as the TOS Enterprise. In space realistically, the ship would be dark, only where light shines on it would the viewer see the ships true color. The TOS Enterprise has unrealistic lighting. Another reason why I love the Discovery version better.
So I rewatch the episode of the review of the TMP refit Enterprise . The Discovery Enterprise looks so similar to the refit more so than the TOS Enterprise. Please do a comparison of all three and maybe with the Kelvin Enterprise as well.
With an established design feature like the airlock on the new Enterprise, you can no longer discuss the odd window placement and suggest it will work out if it's 'scaled up' - the airlock means the scale is set in stone at more-or-less the same size as the original. You have a point of reference - you know the airlock diameter from TMP therefore 'correctly' scaling any model that features a standard docking ring can only work one way. The window size and placement - if they are windows - is just wrong. The 3 large circles on the front of the saucer - on TOS Enterprise - I thought these were supposed to be torpedo launchers or similar.
i have to say this do a comparison of design ignoring the tos enetrprise ! put the nx-01 the discovery enterprise then the movie refit enterprise when you do that things become clear
I wonder what people would’ve written if RUclips existed back in 1987 when TNG first aired. I think it would be quite the same nostalgic hatred we can see now here on Discovery. It’s common for people- and especially for Trek Fans - to hate what is new. As far as it concerns me, I’m just f*cking happy for every new piece of Star Trek. And I’m a perfectly fine with the fact that every show has its own era-specific touch.
Honestly.. straight pylons is all it needed to be acceptable as a modernization. That would have shown alot more respect for the original from that era. MABE slightly less squat, but that one detail is the real glaring one.
Art Design wise, you're kind of right. Adding straight Nacelle Pylons is more faithful to the original. However, remember that Starfleet is as much engineers as they are explorers and (in the case of the Post-Dominion Starfleet) warfighters. If we see this logically design wise, the angled Pylons are more structurally sound than straights, they are less capable of bending in awkward directions, the cutout increases that strength. With modern tech and engineering knowledge, the Pylons on the redesign not only make NCC-1701 look cooler but provides extra strength. EC Henry explains it better than me...
The TOS Enterprise has a magical quality about it and still hold up today. As mush as I prefer DISCO Enterprise over the JJ-Prise it still lakes that mystic elements that capture that magic.
looks advanced to me. technology advanced to our own would make an engineer go "thats impossible!". the connie would be made of stronger materials and use techniques far beyond today.
To say the Original Connie looks weak is like saying todays HD TVs are less robust then a 1930s black and white TV because they are flat or complaining an iPhone is not Phone Box. The Future is he impossible made possible.
"It's not the same ship" oh for fucks sake guys, IT IS THE SAME SHIP, stop having you nostalgia goggles on and try to treat it like it's a different Thing. THIS is the TOS Enterprise, with a Long overdue visuell reboot. I like the TOS Enterprise for what it is, what it was, but that's in the 60s, thats why the Movie Enterprise looked different. because after that it just looked silly and cheap, especially in the 90 and even more so in the 2010s now. I prefer the DIS-Enterprise. And that is literally all i like About DIS. This is a clear line between ENT (the Nacelles) and the Movie Enterprise later with the Refit, the Overall Shape is already there, thus the later Refit makes a lot more sense now.
Did you not bother watching the video? It's not even close to being the same ship. It has superficial similarities, that's all. That doesn't make it good or bad, that's in the eye of the beholder, but it's not the same ship.
Visual reboots are a bit arbitrary on some topics. Klingons are now SO different, maybe with different blood and other details, it's hard to see it as more than total rebooting...
She's... too squat. I don't wanna badmouth anyone but can we do a comparison between the ship as shown in STD and this model? Because it looks too squat. Too squished. I know the ship on screen is squished too but THIS is exessive. Front and Back View look horrificly bad, it's like she has no Neck left.
The windows are likely bigger for two reasons. Their wall size windows going from deck to overhead. Whereas the TOS windows were probably portals. And the interior lighting is probably more accurate than the model depicted with regards to the scale of the illumination. Even light doesn't work exactly the same in miniature as it would at massive sizes.
During t filming of star trek ii Nicolas Myer said the Enterprise is a military vessel and should be treated as such He said it should be Closter phobic so the tos enterprise being too small is most likely better.
I really really like this design, might be my favorite Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C, or D) design. However I do kind of wish It was a little closer, maybe have the pylons be straight and the hull white. The interior is pretty bright and clean, but the hull coloring/texturing is kind of the opposite. Though I admit the metalic does look really nice.
I think the TOS Enterprise could be a refit from the discovery before the cage examples smaller windows to limit the battle damage increased dimensions in some parts of the ship and reduction in others to reflect the experience Starfleet has picked up from different Battles. Maybe the longer neck could represent an improved warp bubble and design innovations
This is another reason why I think that the ST:D upcomming season is still not in the Prime universe just yet. The ships and uniforms are not the same as those found in ST:TOS. I still hold on to the theory that the entire ST:D storyline is about the foundation of the Temporal Accords. The Discovery has been known to not only leap dimensions but through time and space. This makes it the perfect ship to visit multiple dimension and timelines. Additionally, when Sisko and crew went back in time to the space station K7, they were in the ST:TOS uniforms. Because that is the Prime Universe. Now I can forsee a time where Discovery will visit the Prime Universe and don the primary colors but I think most of the story is about them leaping through the multi-verse as they establish the Temporal Accords. Remember time travel is a big part of every Star Trek show and this would make alot of sense why the Klingons look different, why the ships look different, why the crews act different and why this constantly feels like it is not in the Prime universe. #ICantWaitForSTDISCOVERY
I really like the more gritty feel but really they should have chosen a forgive me if I murder the name with misspellings . The Deadalus class instead of just jumping ahead that ship needs its own show.
In terms of comparisons, I dislike that the back view used the later back nacelle bubbles of the TOS Enterprise whereas the bottom view used the earlier back nacelle exhaust holes. The latter is more in line with what Discovery Enterprise has and impresses me as a more accurate comparison. All the other comparisons look really good . In terms of design, I agree the Discovery Enterprise is a little too squat (the nacelles need to peek a little bit more above the primary hull), though it does give it a more sleek appearance (I suspect the intent). The color scheme is a bit too muted for my liking (as stupid as it may read, I miss the big yellow circle). The front engine bubbles are a little too monochromatic, but then that was true of _The Cage_ Enterprise, too, so that's okay, I guess. Not a fan of the shuttle bay landing lip (kind of "what's the point?"). I also miss the concave ring on the bottom of the primary hull. Never really made sense space-wise, but gave it an oddly more aerodynamic look (I suspect the intent since the primary hull was originally intended to land on the planet). I *do* like the between nacelle lights (I'd like them even more if they pulsed front-to-back during warp). I'm also glad the Navigation Deflector dish made it, complete with center spike. I'm also glad they kept a lot of styling elements the same (e.g. the "L" shapes near the impulse engines, the curving black bars on either side of the primary hull, etc). Overall, while I have some nitpicks with it, I do like the design and consider it a decent update of the original (MUCH better than the JJ-prise). That being said, even with all of its faults, I really like the original TOS design (and the movie refit!).
Still don't know why we are taking Eaglemoss numbers as gospel. If it's not onscreen it's not canon. You're in La La Land if you think that's 100% different. You can tell they are meant to be the same ship. Anyone would recognize that ship as the Enterprise. If anything, the fact of the TMP font and the overall look of the ships, I'd say the Discovery team are reimagining the TOS era as more like the TMP look, which is when the visuals of Star Trek could first be taken seriously and would still hold up to this day. I think the window size and squatness tell me this is not an accurate model. The Eaglemoss picture didn't look like this. LOL at Foley calling the original Constitution elegant.
You are right guys, it is not the same ship. There are minor differences but that is ok. We will always have the Enterprise in the Smithsonian and she will always be more special than all others. But let's celebrate seeing the Enterprise again in 2019. Her name and feel back on tv again.
It somehow reminds me of the mirror-universe-episode of the 2002 enterprise-series. Back in the day they had tge courage to use Sets, that looked like the 60s, becaue this was, what ships from that aera had looked like.
just for reference: the TOS font on the registry markings (and the hull paint color) was a copy of that used on USAF aircraft at the time (1960s): just go look at the font used on KC-135A tankers in the '60s (I was a crew chief on one of those) and you will see the similarity. Here's a link to an image of one of the airplanes I worked on (& took to Christchurch NZ for international exercises) www.airteamimages.com/boeing-kc-135_63-8885_usa---us-air-force_126158_large.html ...Here's a link to a picture of the TOS Enterprise that is in the Smithsonian. www.flickr.com/photos/birdofthegalaxy/6173379199 you will see the similarity. Since Gene Rodenberry was an Air Force B-17 pilot in WWII, you can understand his adoption of the USAF aircraft look.
The Discovery Enterprise is beautiful. I like it better than the TMP version. I love the NX-01 elements. I wish this had been the Kelvin Enterprise. That one is hideous.
I do prefer the TMP version, but the original did grow on me. Not sure about the split pylons here...
The split in the pylons I can see have a purpose perhaps where they vent plasma. The TMP version had something similar.
Well, grilles, yeah.
Doug Drexler already designed it and there are a couple of Trekyards episodes on it. Search the channel for NX-01 refit
It would look tiny next to the enterprise
The refit has a stupid deflector hanging below it instead of just upgrading the saucer mounted forward one!
They did a good job on this. TOS Enterprise was always a little clunky for me. Looks like NX design evolved into Constitution over the decades, which makes sense.
I 100% agree!
That makes more sense.
except those rediculous swept nacelle pylons. its a starship not a sportscar.
As another commenter said, I'd be really interested in seeing a comparison to the TMP Enterprise. There are some other hints (the shape of the hallway in some of the S2 teaser stuff being one) that they're going for a look that's more "TMP meets Enterprise" than TOS.
This is a ship that more realistically could be 'refit' into what we see in TMP. The original really couldn't be
Stop saying it's a different ship or that it's not prime. IT IS the same, it's just been restyled to fit in with Discovery look and feel. You can really compare them. Like comparing the Fist 500 with the original. Same model but different looks and scale.
It's not the same timeline.
@@Hellser Their Constitution is 700m long! End of story. They only call it "prime" timeline for marketing reason. Stop try to defent it.
@23GreyFox wdym it's not the same timeline? All u old people think changes and differences are ugly and horrible!
It does work from the evolution based on the NX design and the starships of that era to what starship would look like 50-100 years from Archer's Era.
but not to backtrack from the retrofit..
(She is a pretty gal though, aint she)
Everything about Disco is horrific! A total waste of a show called Star Trek.
The Discovery reboot Enterprise is beautiful. It's the best version of the Constitution Class I've seen rendered.
Its like the difference between a 72 Dodge Challenger and a 2018 Dodge Challenger.
Yeah looking at the 2018 you think it looks just like the 72....but put them side to side. The new one is bigger, and more different then you think.
exactly, well said ::: :
You still wouldn't use a 2018 Challenger in a film that's set in the 1970s.
yes that is exactly what happened, disrespected cannon. yet we [including trekyards] still patronise this deviation regardless of or if we did not chose to view discovery :::
Not to sound look a noob but why is it that it had to be 25% different?
read only Star Trek isn't real. Not sure if you knew this but it's not a documentary about the future.
So we need Discoverys version of our 1960 Constitution Class Star ship to keep the stories going
no we don't. They could have stayed closer to the original. at least keep the same gorram sillhouette for criminy's sake.
I agree. I would even would like a comparison with the Kelvin Enterprise.
Richard Bond
Compared to the massive hair dryer nacelle design of the Enterprise in '09 or to the very dainty swan like one at the beginning of Beyond?
I'd like to see it compared to both really, but next to the swanlike one i feel like the Discovery Enterprise would be so squat.
Matt Mon I don't think it would matter, I guess both would be great.
S C
I have a feeling that if they line the designs side by side with DSC being between TOS and TMP, it'll look like they chopped out bits of neck in a refit before the TMP refit, then realized "hey we can put torpedo launchers here" and so they put a piece back.
The swept back pylons work for another reason it is sort of an intermediary step between the NX refit and the tos conni
...except they look EXACTLY like the refit ... so they built it one way, then changed it ... then changed it *back*. makes no sense.
I used to think that the TOS Enterprise was meant to be seen on small standard def 4:3 screen, even DS9's TT episode was before high def 16:9 but I re watched the appearance of the constitution class ship in ENT and it didn't look out of place. They really should have stuck closer to the original design.
I tought it did and ds9 played it for laughs. If you notice they did make fun of the designs and aesthetics quite a bit.
I do like the bigger impluse engines on Discovery Enterprise
You know, the Discovery Enterprise has a kinda NX-01 look to it, especially the saucer part, and has a earlier version look to it compared to the one from the classical series.
true about the saucer part (though the big black circles are overdone and out of place.)
but the pylons really suck - too much like the refit, which creates a wierd anachronism. Heres the updated version 20 years before the version that was updated, 5 years before its updated back to the 25 years ago version. just dumb.
I would love to see the color and skin theme from the TOS Enterprise placed on the Discovery Enterprise.
The Original Enterprise will ALWAYS be the best because without IT there would be NO other Enterprises no bloody A,B,C,D, or E
The Discovery Enterprise looks really good but u can't beat the gorgeous looks of the TOS Enterprise
Or the TMP version?
Chris sonofPear Yes I agree
I disagree the tos is just ugly
Supposedly it's mean't to be a 'little' bigger.
Poor Disco the "Hero Ship" where people seem to like more of her sister ships than they do her.
*CJ Carpenter*
"The pizza cutter".
Both are fairly smart looking ships
I actually really don't mind the Disco-Prize and its redesign. Maybe the hull paneling and material is a bit dark and drab but that's about it for me.
You can clearly see it’s the same ship it just been changed to fit the “Visual Reboot”.... it’s still instantly recognisable....
If they put right angle turns in the nacelle Struts - would it be instantly recognisable as a visual update of The Enterprise C too ?
The three front "windows" we're not meant to be windows, they were the original beam emitters for the deflectors, the dish was meant to be the main scanner.
John McDougall They don't even look like windows anyway, regardless of what they're supposed to be, haha.
I may be in the minority here but I actually like the Discovery Enterprise.
Kevin Jones you are not alone !
Kevin Jones
It's a nice modern era looking design. Dont hang in the past like an sentimental 85 year old grandpa. Everyone who says the discoverie Enterprise is not good looking or not fitting hase serious problems.😬
I don't think you're in the minority at all
Feel its the first thing to make the conny look correct to the franchise and not some cheap 60s props floating around on fishing line.
You people are crazy I tell you CRAZY!
...notice the sarcasm?
i think that the discovery enterprise looks like it would be more of a destroyer but the original looks more like an actual "heavy cruiser"
Looks like a fountain pen ...
in my understanding i believe the "Fins" act as a sort of "Heat Sink" or a unit to help keep the warp coils cool tho im not 100% tho
couldnt the same stuff be said moreso for the E?
but the difference is the fact thats a later and "newer" ship and style, tech when it becomes more advanced becomes more stylized, which is what the Soverign class is
That's the whole point, its supposed to look more modernised and high tech, but it comes off as even more older looking than the tos enterprise, due to its hull and outer frame being open.
Reportedly, John Eaves was inspired by 1950s USAF planes for some ship features, adding fins and spikes.
The three lights on the front were always supposed to be the main front particle deflectors, until the TMP refit, when the sensor dish on the secondary hull was replaced with a larger deflector unit. Many people forget the dish was a sensor, not a deflector in TOS.
At the front of the saucer section overlooking the Enterprise wording, are those windows or are they maybe only running lights highlighting the name?
I loved this redesign I personally hope they carry it forward with this aesthetic
Gosh STD enterprise is not a very new model. They just took the TOS version, and made it much more sleek. Cmon u gotta admit the new design looks more durable
Shouldn't you compare it to the cage not the tos as you know this is meant to be just after the cage still 10 years till tos.
I will have to admit. I like it. The Discovery Enterprise looks a lot better than the Jjprise. Still it is not as good as Tos Enterprise. Still I understand the need for the changes.
my grandmother's garbage can would look better than the jjprise. means nothing.
Love this re-imaged Constitution class with the sole exception of the rather large nacelle fins. Overall a great ship.
I'm 70 years old and had the origenal model. On the instructions that little hole between the impulse engines was labeled as a photon torpedo tube.
They’re both amazing designs. Personally, I’m on the knife edge of which one I prefer and that’s a great thing because on the one hand, the original design is beautiful and so is the new Discovery version.
I think most would associate spikes on the bussards with the ISS Enterprise... It was the defining feature between her and the Connie.
My favorite has to be the Discovery's enterprise. That's how u upgrade, jj Abrams.
lol, it will be funny if, when they release TOS in 4k, the CGI Enterprise will look like the disco version.
A great new take on the Connie. It looks wonderful in SNW.
When I saw the enterprise for the first time in Discovery, my first thought was "now *that* is the enterprise!"
im a minority here but i enjoy discovery and i like the 'new' enterprise. i didnt' grow up with a lot of star trek like a lot of people but im glad they changed the design. they did it such a way that the are clear links between ENT,TOS and even TMP. furthermore when you look at canon the are Logical in canon explanations as well for why the is vast differences between Discovery enterprise/cage enterprise and TOS enterprise that fit so well. the problem is people are so anal about nostalgia glasses and a refusal to open up theri minds a bit (which btw isn't very trek) they immediately hate it and dont give it a chance.
S C 😂
the problem is people (esp Trek fans) like things to make sense.
I always thought the circle between the impulse engines on the TOS Enterprise possibly was an aft torpedo tube.
It was labeled as such on the instructions of the first model kit (yeah I'm old lol).
so many years have past and now they decide to redesign the 1701enterprise. its remarkable really that so much time has gone by.
About the circle in the center of the TOS impulse drive, "Well the thing's gotta have a tailpipe".
Please do a comparison of all three and maybe with the Kelvin Enterprise as well.
from the front view the discovery Enterprise saucer looks like its floating especially with the lighting used.
From the front, the proportions for some reason reminded me of the Grissom.
i have to say this do a comparison of design ignoring the tos enetrprise ! put the nx-01 the discovery enterprise then the movie refit enterprise when you do that things become clear
I love the rear views of the new engines, impulse and warp. I think they look great from behind.
warp rear view was taken directly from the first pilot version of the E. That was accurate at least.
2 question
1 is this prime universe?
2 is this what the Enterprise looked like between nx 01 and the cage?
1. yes
2. no
The TOS Enterprise has a magical quality about it and still hold up today. As mush as I prefer DISCO Enterprise over the JJ-Prise it still lakes that mystic elements that capture that magic.
It's said that the TOS design is extremely photogenic, i.e. there is no bad angle to see it from.
I would be interested to know why you say that. Form me it speaks of the future.
looks advanced to me. technology advanced to our own would make an engineer go "thats impossible!".
the connie would be made of stronger materials and use techniques far beyond today.
To say the Original Connie looks weak is like saying todays HD TVs are less robust then a 1930s black and white TV because they are flat or complaining an iPhone is not Phone Box. The Future is he impossible made possible.
"It's not the same ship"
oh for fucks sake guys, IT IS THE SAME SHIP, stop having you nostalgia goggles on and try to treat it like it's a different Thing.
It is a well done re-imagining of the same ship.
Did you not bother watching the video? It's not even close to being the same ship. It has superficial similarities, that's all. That doesn't make it good or bad, that's in the eye of the beholder, but it's not the same ship.
It's a re-imagining of the same ship. Nothing complicated about that.
Ex Astris Scientia reports (maybe from studio or model makers) that the new Connie is 385 metres long.
Visual reboots are a bit arbitrary on some topics. Klingons are now SO different, maybe with different blood and other details, it's hard to see it as more than total rebooting...
In Strange New Worlds when we get to see all the internal rooms on this Enterprise we find yeah, the windows are huge.
She's... too squat. I don't wanna badmouth anyone but can we do a comparison between the ship as shown in STD and this model? Because it looks too squat. Too squished. I know the ship on screen is squished too but THIS is exessive. Front and Back View look horrificly bad, it's like she has no Neck left.
Commander Rotal Yeah this game model is off for sure.
TMP Enterprise had a squashed neck as well...

And now the side view of the DISCO Enterprise saucer looks like the actual NX saucer without the deflector dish on the front
I really like the more gritty feel but really they should have chosen a forgive me if I murder the name with misspellings . The Deadalus class instead of just jumping ahead that ship needs its own show.
That top view makes the DISCO Enterprise saucer look like a NX era Excelsior.
Enterprises or Enterprie?
Enterprii
I like the Discovery Enterprise, because it has the TMP refit Enterprise feeling to it.
