    Discovery's Enterprise to me looks like the best update solution between the 1960s-style TOS original version and the over-the-top JJ version. The nacelles placed wider apart on Discovery's Enterprise is in line with the Enterprise NX-01 style.

      The more I look at the jjprise (jjprise is an official autocorrect in devices out of the box, ok worrying) the more my eyes are drawn to the docking ports. They're misaligned on the vertical; excusable in the refit, but not in the jj design. And yes, the discoprise (also somehow in autocorrect out of the box, ok this is gonna make me paranoid :p) is a better alternate timeline design. Interestingly, I read an interview that contained the words "so this fits in our timeline" which I take mas official admission that Discovery isn't prime timeline.

      The reason the STD’prise appears correctly proportioned is because TV screens have gotten wider. On 4:3 screens the motion picture ship fitted the rule of thirds, used to frame shots. Using the same design and framing leaves extra space surrounding the ship on modern screens.

    The sad thing is that the "JJprise" was originally designed to be the same size as the TOS. The problem came when they designed and built the shuttlecraft sets too large, then had to scale up the shuttlebay to make them fit for the shots they wanted, THEN had to scale up the ship so it all made visual sense. The size value is a post-production retcon.

    I am fine being in the minority here but I like Discoprise a lot. I really love the ST:Enterprise era look of the ship while still maintaining the overall look that you recognize as the Enterprise we are familiar with, it is a nice evolutionary step for the ship and I think looks much more likely to end up as TMP Enterprise after refit than TOS Enterprise does. I've always been a fan of the aztecing on the hull of Federation ships.. It is not scaled up ridiculously like JJ Prise. Window size, ya maybe but there are more than just 1 size of windows so that doesn't bother me .

The Vengeance, when taking into account that it's about twice the size of the JJprize(which is over 700m long I believe?) makes it much closer to the Imperial Star Destroyer.

      (That's meant ironic by the way)

    • @ravissary79
      @ravissary79 6 лет назад +2

      It's actually because the 2 decks in the original aren't 2 regular decks. The top deck is living space, but squished up at the edge like a loft, but is otherwise the ONLY deck that covers the entire disc.
      The JJ prise is a genuine full 2 decks, nestled between layers at the edge, which nearly doubles that thickness. But per it's proportions it's not as thick for its size as the original design.
      Hence all the problems.

    • @watcherzero5256
      @watcherzero5256 6 лет назад +8

      Yeah its like a skyscraper, there is space between the floors to carry the utilities, despite having Jeffries tubes the original had paper thin walls, the JJ enterprise was far more primitive with large piping and so needs massive space between decks. The other thing is in the original windows tended to be quite narrow but they were bigger in TNG, bigger still in Voyager and now they are essentially floor to ceiling windows like we have in modern buildings.

      Speaking of J, do they really need to make the ships bigger? Even the D was too big, and EC Henry proved it as well. Also, what’s with skinny pylons and nacelles? I know it’s in space and all, but design reminds of certain cartoon characters, big heads, small bodies, and too thin limbs, won’t really function outside comic/cartoon medium.

    My favorite recent version of the 1701 is unofficial, and that would be Madkoifish's design. I've always felt that design would have been ideal for the Kelvin films because it's a noticeable update, but not so radical that it would turn fans off, as in the case with the 2009 Connie.

      There's not enough space in the original TOS Enterprise for 431 crew, quarters, science labs, medical facilities, main computer, turbolift shafts, conduits, life support equipment, etc. It needed to be about 20% bigger (as the interior of the shuttlecraft set was as opposed to the exterior prop).

      The reason for Kelvin timelines bigger iteration of the Enterprise is based on the scans of the Romulan vessel the Narada sent back by the Kelvin to Starfleet before her destruction. The information they received sent them back to the drawing board in anticipation of any future encounters with such vessel technology.

      The engines have to be a certain distance in order to create the warp bubble that surrounds the ship at warp speeds. Too far away, or too close won't work.as for Disco prise, and JJ. It's what we're used to. Using the TOS version as a reference, every remake will feel like 'not the original'. When viewed from a TV-decade point of view, the redesign just works. when we watch ST from a point of view where we imagine that these starships represent the future knowing that the NX-01 looked even more modern than the TOS Enterprise, we will have to adapt. IMHO they are all the Enterprise, they are all original. We need to watch every series with the eye of the time they were produced, only then can we fully enjoy the starships as they were. Still, as a 1990's star trek fan, the 'Disco-prise' is my favorite, because it's closest to the looks of the starships from that era.

      I mean... That's the classification it's given for each iteration of the Connie. You could maybe say that TMP had a different name, the Refit (which it definitely is), but it still makes sense to call it a Connie. That's what it is.

    • @TheColonelSassacre
      @TheColonelSassacre 3 года назад +1

      @@lucinavonnolaran8728 You could make the argument that the Discoprise is intended to be the same ship (even though it really can't be) but the Kelvin ship is so radically different there is no reason they couldn't have said their universe used a different name for the class, too. I was looking at it from a fan perspective, though. If someone asks for the specifications of a Constitution-class, there shouldn't be seven mutually incompatible answers. That completely defeats the purpose of having ship classes at all.

    @raymondsanders3584 6 лет назад +2

    I think your comparison should have been the TOS Enterprise, the Star Trek Movie Enterprise and the Star Trek Discovery Enterprise. To me the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise is a parallel universe so it’s evolution doesn’t fit the comparison. The Discovery Enterprise is a progression from the the NX-01, which is also a reboot of the timeline based on Star Trek First Contact. They also took many of the best elements from the Motion Picture Enterprise which makes the Discovery Enterprise fit in the progression. I think the biggest mistake of TMP was using the term refit. To me that is what the ship always looked like. I view TOS as someone telling the tales of Kirk’s captaincy, where they didn’t know what the ship really looked like, so we got a stage view of a ship that actually didn’t exist design wise (which explains the 1960’s styling).

  • @brandennesbitt608
    @brandennesbitt608 Год назад +3

    The discovery version of the enterprise is by far hands down the best version. It looks and feels like the ship that the TOS version would have been if they’d had the technology, the money, and ability to do. Also keep it in mind that they were thinking of it as this is the ship, it’s what taxis the crew around. Where for most trekies, this ship isn’t just another member of the crew, it’s the most important member. It’s a big difference in mind set

    I think it makes sense for the Kelvin timeline to go gigantic, in response to the arrival of a ship from a hundred years ahead in the timeline. Like how the Mirror Universe also went gigantic when they got ahold of a ship from a hundred years in their future.
    I am not the biggest fan of shows post-Discovery inflating the size of everything by 20% but it definitely is something a lot of people have been vocally pushing for, for decades now. I definitely feel like the Discovery Enterprise was designed to be closer to the original Constitution but was upscaled so it would not look tiny compared to the Discovery. After having watched SNW, I have grown to really like the 2018 redesign of the ship. I think it is a visually appealing update to a classic design.
    The TMP Refit Constitution still blows all of these ships out of the water and is by far the best version of the Connie.

    A proportion that isn't discussed a lot but really bothers me is the *relationship between the Dome on the bottom of the saucer and the deflector dish*.
    This is what makes the jjprise look so distorted. The dish is nearly underneath the centre of the saucer.
    On _all_ of the other versions of the Enterprise that is pushed far rearward,, giving the ship a much more balanced look. Even with improvements made in later JJ movies this essential hard point was never adjusted so the neck always seemed like it was coming down in the wrong place or was misshapen or in some way you could just tell it wasn't right.
    And for me it is that that front of the secondary hull is far too pushed forward in JJ's version. It totally upsets the balance of the original design, the refit design, and really every other iteration of Enterprise after that including the B, C, D and the E.
    No Federation ship has had a bottom whole that protrudes so far forward that it's under the center of the saucer? That alone would have improved the balance of the ship if they had moved that neck all the way up to the edge near the dish, reestablishing the balance from the original design but with different details that we can talk about. In Discovery they got these proportions roughly correct but certainly far far superior to the Kelvin timeline. That's why in the back of our minds even though we have problems with the details we can say but overall it does look like an Enterprise in its proportions because of the relationship of those key components.

    I always refer to the JJ Enterprise as the "I-terprise". Initially I was ok with it before the movie came out. They discussed how it was larger to fit with "real world" engineering concepts. They wanted to show a working star ship with inner mechanics. I was impressed with released shots showing pipes and grating reminding me of Naval ships. Kind of gritty and realistic. Then they got to the crisp pure white bridge that was so bright it hurt my eyes. The first thing that popped into my mind is Kirk just walked into an Apple store. I was waiting for the characters to cozy up to the genius bar. Then they showed the Nacels and I became ill. I usually don't mind re imagining of classic iconic vehicles. Things change, but I will never like that ship. Then they do the whole time travel thing and that made me want to puke. Time travel in a show about space exploration is just weak as s writing. They may as well just say someone is dreaming.

      I don't get why people are always saying it's ugly. I look at it as the original Enterprise with a hot rod twist...or as designed by Tom Paris. It blends styles of the TOS and TMP Enterprise together.
      At the end of the day, the JJ-prise has more in common with the Phase II Enterprise.
      My only gripe with the ship is the interior. Too bright really, I've seen shots of the bridge with toned down lights and it looks a hell of a lot better.

    Gotta say I never realized how different JJ-prise looks from the original, and it certainly didn't come off to me that huge, when I saw the movies.
    The JJ-prise saucer doesn't look like its 2 decks, and it's easiest to tell from the front. 2 rows of windows, yes, but not 2 decks. If you want to say the row of windows represent a deck, then there appears to be at least 4 decks, one above and below, just without windows.
    You still need to compare Disco-prise to Discovery itself!

    A proportion that isn't discussed a lot but really bothers me is the *relationship between the Dome on the bottom of the saucer and the deflector dish* .
    Or Voyager.
    Changing this proportional relationship alone would have improved the balance of the ship if they had moved that neck all the way up to the edge near the dish, reestablishing the balance from the original design but with different details that we can talk about.
    In Discovery they got these proportions roughly correct but certainly far far superior to the Kelvin timeline. That's why in the back of our minds even though we have problems with the details we can say but overall it doesn't look like an Enterprise in its proportions because of the relationship of those key components.

    I still think the JJprise is 450 meters, about the same size as STDprise. Also the 09 ENT is not the same as the Conny as they built a few (shown hanging from the ceiling into Darkness) before they got Narada scan tech and switched to building the JJprise. To redcon the STDprise, it is the purpose built warship Enterprise Class and almost all 12 were destroyed in the STD Klingon War. Maybe the Enterprise shown at the end of STD season 1, is the only Combat Cruiser class ship that survived.

      That's obviously incorrect. The bridge window, deck windows, and cutaways of the superstructure seen in ID support the claim it was built to 266m. The claim it was always bilt that size dosn't match the fact they have to bodge it later to support that larger size. Such as Pike's shuttle barely clearing the shuttlebay doors, figures walking past the bridge window and animated through the deck windows. The larger ship theory only works if everyone in Starfleet is four metres tall. img.trekmovie.com/images/st09/st09_hr_spockvs.jpg this is just regular Spock not Spock from the Infinate Vulcan.

    I love the Discoprise. I always kind of felt like the TOS Enterprise was way too small for how large the crew complement was said to be. Sizing it up a bit and some other visual retcons to fit it in with the NX-01 looks really nice to me. All I would personally change is the nacelle struts a bit, and lighten the hull color slightly. The Enterprise actually looks like a ship from the future again, while keeping the same general look and feel. I have no problem with visual redesigns on a 50+ year old show as long as it's at least somewhat close. The new Klingon ships, though? Oof...

  • @TahoeTime4457
    @TahoeTime4457 2 года назад +1

    The reason they run away with the scale in these other ships is because the interiors of the ships arent laid out as well. Jeffries didnt just make a ship shape. He designed a living breathing starship with decks and rooms and turbolifts. That gives you a scale. That tells you “This is how big this ship needs to be”. The Church didnt do this with the JJ Enterprise what so ever. The idiotic writers of Discovery wouldnt have considered that either, but John Eaves’ experience with the Enterprise E design gave him some common sense in ship design.
    John Eaves and the Strange New Worlds writers and designers need to make the Strange New Worlds Enterprise a living ship in the spirit of Jeffries. Its possible. They have fantastic sets. It wont take an evening… its going to take some time. Get to work.

    For me I’ve never understood the amount of windows on the original enterprise’s neck. It’s 4-6 metres wide depending on who you ask so why are there windows at all, and how come on every single model I’ve ever seen, you can’t see through them to the other side?
    The JJprise’s windows are very large, with the larger ones being about 5 galaxy class windows wide.
    Though the Discoprise’s windows are a bit too large I think they’re more realistic that the other two.
    The JJ prise is my preferred design for the Neck sizing reason I just wish it has more windows that were more accurately sized. But I guess that’s Abram’s fault for wanting the enterprise upsized.

  • @PsychoStreak
    @PsychoStreak 6 лет назад

    It's even more ridiculous since they all seem to have the same sized shuttlebay doors, even with the upsizing. The one thing that upsizing would help with - room for as many shuttles as she's supposed to have, isn't actually fixed by the Disco or JJprise.
    The JJprise is just shy of a caricature. Enough has been said about it over the last 9 years.
    The Discoprise is better, but the proportions are still off. The planetary sensor array is HUGE, the top of the saucer looks like a hubcap, and the swept back nacelles are wrong, and basically the JJprise nacelles flipped.
    The saucer is too big and too low, the pylon angle is wrong and puts the nacelles too far apart, and all the windows and lights on the top of the saucer make it look like some back country pickup with a light bar on the roof and some little ones mounted on top of that. If you're going to put headlights on the ship, put them in the leading edge of the saucer.
    With the TOS Enterprise, the only thing I'd do would be to make the nacelles a bit wider (when viewed from the side) and thicker (fore and aft views) They should not be angled.
    The neck could be thicker, but the height is fine as is, and I'm fine leaving it slender. Everything clears everything else. We already know the ship is big enough to hold it's crew and supplies.

The Romulan mining ship was huge, so the Enterprise winds up huge as well. Shows our Kirkin our universe is a lot more a smarter Captain than the JJ verse Kirk. Our Enterprise is 948ft / re fit 305m. or one thousand ft. normal size. Takes on all challengers. The JJ verse one has to look big to scare every one off.
