My 5 year old son has been a bit ill last few days, and I just asked him if he wanted to watch Emma, I told him something ate ALL THE BRASSICAS and his face lit up 😂 he loves the drama. Thanks for a great episode. I'm sorry he loves the downs as much as the ups of gardening 😅❤
Hello Emma - something you might not like to hear, but yesterday I opened my bag of Strolch to put round my broad beans and there were two snails sitting on the Strolch in the bag........
Take the wooden sides off your beds and keep stripping the decaying bottom leaves off your other plants - basically give them nowhere to hide. It honestly works. Good luck!
Pesky slugs and snails! I don't have a solution for you but leggy plants can be planted really deep, it will extend the root, give more support to the leggy bit and allow for more solid growth once established... this works well for flowers too. x
I’m growing my brassica seedlings indoors. Hoping to harden off larger plants before they go in my raised beds in May. When you’re feeling down look back at your vlogs from last summer and all the lovely things you grew.
I've designated 2024 as the year of the slug. Or to be more precise the year I went slug free . I've laid down planks everywhere and every day I go around collecting our little friends hiding underneath. To date I've collected 2,478 slugs give or take a mollusc. The plan is to make homemade nematodes as shown on Simplify Gardening channel. 2025 will be the year of the pigeon .
I love gardening, im no professional at all but im learning so much and get so much joy from it. My garden is not the typical, its 80% perennial fruit and 20% vegetable
Add some flat slats of wood on the ground outside the raised beds. The snails and slugs will go underneath and hide out. Then simply flip the boards over and scrape them into a bucket of soapy water to dispose of.
Nematodes! (and prayer😂) Expensive though. Collect all the slugs and snails - put them on the bird table or in the compost bin. Grow plants on in a greenhouse or coldframe until they are big enough to survive. Expensive also. Slugs like little seedlings and warmth and damp. When the sun comes so will birds. (Antidepressants work as well😂) Please dont worry.
It’s hard not to get discouraged. I almost decided to quit and give up. We have slugs, snails, cucumber Beatles, cabbage moths, Japanese beetles, vine borers etc etc. I decided I would not quit and try another year. I hope it all gets better for you and we can bow to our organic farmers.
I like some of Tom's solutions to the snail problems personally! So frustrating after the time and expense that go into gardening. I love the way you are involving and encouraging your children in the allotment.
Dear Emma, Hello, from The Netherlands. I last heard that snails find their way back up to 1km, so you would have to move them for more than 1 km away of the allotment . I heard you can eradicate them by using nematodes. Good luck with the allotment. I love watching your chaotic vlogs.
Hi. I know its five months later but you are going to plant seeds again. The only thing i think can work is when you put a coke bottle over the baby plant take the lit off and cut the bottom off. Then add snail pellets around the bottle so that the plant just gets🤷🤷🤷 stronger
Emma I feel your pain over the brassicas 😮I planted broad beans a few weeks ago in my raised beds. I covered them with netting but nothing coming up. Yesterday I saw a fat mouse casually walking in my garden, obviously found a hole in my netting and gorged himself!!!
They are excellent. They only harm slugs and snails. Plus for foxes etc I have learned ( painfully) to make cages from broomsticks, off-cuts and green plastic ( heavy duty) netting.
hi Em, I Would say at least 60/70% of my crops especially brassicas get munched by slugs and snails and its soul destroying! Dont forget that a huge amount of slugs live underground and eat the tiny seedlings virtually as they emerge (the younger, the tastier it seems!) from the earth. This year is the worst ever due to the damp mild conditions and I am defo losing the battle against them! Your plot is looking fab x
The strong winds have kept me off my plot since the weekend. I don’t know if this will work but slugs and snails love citrus so I’m making a citrus waste area in the hope they will go there instead. I don’t worry too much about wildlife eating my food, it makes me feel good that I’m helping nature! I also leave a few of each crop unprotected in the hope it will be eaten by something and the ones protected will be ok. I’m using slugless around my hosta at home and so far it’s not been eaten it’s the only thing they go for in the garden x
Emma, slugs and snails have homing instincts, apparently you need to take them at least 20 meters away from your plot, otherwise they will just return. I use pet bedding, wood shavings around my strawberries, had some over so spread it around my spinach which was getting destroyed by slugs, seems to have worked as new leaves are slug free … also it’s cheaper than strulch
I really enjoy this as a complete novice about to start year two and proper allotmenteering after spending all that time clearing and prepping (blooming bindweed)
My brassicas were also demolished, id grown them from seed and planted out when well established, gutted, ive now used nematodes and will put copper netting aroubd the next lot im growing and my cabbages
Sometimes it’s better to plant out later in the Spring when the slugs are fuller. There isn’t as much for them to eat in April so anything you plant will be gobbled! I find beer traps really effective xx
I am making copper frames to go round bases of plants, it is working, ie using water bottles cut in half like a collar. The copper really is a good buy.
Coffee grounds work 100% I can't understand why Emma won't try it .they are free from coffee shops .also place cut off plastic bottles over seedlings until they get established
You can make a slug trap with a mix of yeast, sugar, flour and water. Bury it in the bed and they will fall in, then you can put them in the compost or feed them to the birds.
I've not planted anything outside yet because of snails and slugs. I am growing lots inside at the moment and when the weather changes for the better ( it will get better won't it??) hopefully I'll have healthy seedlings to plant out.
Hi Emma... Love to watch your video's. About the slugs...Beartraps helps very well against slugs. And you can also try to grow some vegetables in vertical towers to avoid slugs as much as possible. This two solutions works for me.
I've got two robins visiting now and again so I bought some robin seed, put some out but it was a bit much so some was left, when I took the dog out I noticed loads of slugs snails eating the seed so I've been leaving small patches and they all congregate by the seed, sorry about your plants fab vlog Emma xx🥰
Hi emma,I put radish and beets into the ground 2 days ago,and came by this morning and something has dug them all up,so frustrating.to stop your blue pipe falling down, put a garden cane across the top and fasten with tie wraps.hope that helps.sorry about your plants
Worth buying a couple bottles beer for the snails ,they wont eat ur veges and flowers if they have choice of beer Even make an home brew ,snails s.ugs will love it , U will allways have som on hand
Try strops of brambles around your crops just cut a few and put them around the crops the slugs and snail wil get spiked and won't go near also did you set a slug trap
Think i would try beer traps make own get a small plastic drink bottle cut in the side half way down some 1inch holes all round so slugs can go in dig a hole put cut bottle in hole only part way in ground otherwise all the soil will fall in part fill with cheap old beer and see what happens beer will need to be replaced weekly to keep working if you buy a can dont waste can put in a pop bottle and use next time 1 in each bed depending on size of bed more if a bad area good luck its worth a try
Good job with the blackberry twigs if you can put some more on the other side of your peas,it definitely works for me and cats and foxes wont tread on the thorns.CUT some smaller blackberry twigs about 4in long and put them all around the stems of your peas 👌 lovely to see Tom ❤
HI Emma, I notice you have tulips in the same bed as veggies, snails congregate on the underside of large flat leaves like those of tulips because they can make a good seal and avoid losing water from their bodies. However, it is easy to find and collect them from the undersides and dispose of them. I think you need to get them completely off your plot rather than toss them to one side, can you collect them and put them in the woods away from your plot. I find snails also hide inside a tulip flower. I pick tons of snails off our tulip leaves and I keep tulips and other large leafed plants separate from my veggies. You have done wonders with your plots and worked so hard, don't let slugs and snails waste all your efforts and money.
I'm with Tom! They've destroyed my 1st peas and radishes, and I'm sure the carrot seedlings have been got at - I've had to put nematodes in, we've had a year of wet weather so I'm sure there are a gazillion slug eggs in the soil
On emma I feel for you love (and you don't look old enough to have a son that age)I have the same problem with the slugs etc the nets are mainly to to keep away the birds but to over come the problem I've used copper strips ,salt and the best result is slug pellets cruel but works be careful because they will have your peas as well take care Kevin
What about putting something slippery on the outside of the wood around your raised beds so hopefully the slugs and snails will not be able to crawl up and just slide off.
Sorry about the brassica massacre the tulips are looking lovely. Once the weather starts warming up the snail problem should decrease love all the vlogs xx😊
I know slug pellets are taboo, but the chemical ones aren’t banned now. So the ones available don’t harm other animals. They’re also often labelled organic, although I think that’s debatable. I do wonder if the taboo still applies or if they’re a reasonable option.
These darn slugs and snails! Im two months into having my plot here in Devon and most of my radishes have been raviged, along with some of the onions and bulbs. Ive put down copper tape on one bed to see what happens, but im looking into other organic/non pesticide ways. Whilst doing my research, i think that strulch and wool pellets arent as effective in wet weather as they arent as uncomfortable for snulgs & snails to trail over 😧 So it seems weve got an unlucky set up with all the weather reeather in the uk this year!
You need a hedgehog and lizards, they eat them like lollipops. I would be making little tents out of mesh to place over all of your seedlings while you clear up the snails and slugs.
Apparently snails have a homing instinct but this could be overcome by moving them more than 20 metres away. Maybe Tom could help you with a massive snail collecting mission and take the little critters for a drive to be deposited elsewhere. Is that a thing I wonder? Fly tipping snails? I wonder if those big birds who attacked your brassica cage were trying to get to the snails rather than the brassicas? Even foxes like to eat snails.
If you plant marigolds or other flowers snails and slugs love to eat near the stuff you want to eat they will leave most of your stuff so yes always needs scraficial spots 😢
I adore your videos. Don’t let negativity-prats take your joy!!

Take the wooden sides off your beds and keep stripping the decaying bottom leaves off your other plants - basically give them nowhere to hide. It honestly works. Good luck!
Try putting clear plastic bottles over outdoor seedlings. Just cut the bottoms off. Protects them until they establish a bit more. Loving your videos
Pesky slugs and snails! I don't have a solution for you but leggy plants can be planted really deep, it will extend the root, give more support to the leggy bit and allow for more solid growth once established... this works well for flowers too. x

Add the slugs and snails to the compost heap. Let them do the job they are made for ..
Your plot does indeed look lovely! Nice to see your son helping you too 🙂
You can pour stale beer into flat saucers/pans and sit them on the ground. Snails and slugs are attracted and climb in and drown.
Yes but this will actually attract MORE snails and not all of them will die, you're probably only helping your neighbors with this 😂
My friend told me she killed a frog doing the beer thing 😢
Flat saucers yes 😃
I love gardening, im no professional at all but im learning so much and get so much joy from it. My garden is not the typical, its 80% perennial fruit and 20% vegetable

Greenhouses aren’t slug free. I’ve been evicting slugs daily from mine and my seedlings are on a high shelf, they’ve nibbled the tops off some.
I like some of Tom's solutions to the snail problems personally! So frustrating after the time and expense that go into gardening. I love the way you are involving and encouraging your children in the allotment.

I’ve been using water flour sugar and dried yeast in containers for slugs and snails and omg it works so well!!
Beer baths for Slugs

I really enjoy this as a complete novice about to start year two and proper allotmenteering after spending all that time clearing and prepping (blooming bindweed)

Hi Emma I use coffee .that's keep all them slugs a way for my veg . You have got a lovely plot . John from Scotland
Coffee grounds work 100% I can't understand why Emma won't try it .they are free from coffee shops .also place cut off plastic bottles over seedlings until they get established
Slug and snails? Your garden still looks amazing! Enjoyed seeing your son on the plot.

This happened to me a few days ago. Im going to try beer traps.
I have enjoyed this very much! Thank you!

Emma crush and sprinkle egg shells on or diatomaceous earth. Coffee grounds repel snails as well
Pour powdered Lime (white powder) all the way around the edge of the beds (enough for it to mound) Ends snails if they try to cross it
I've got two robins visiting now and again so I bought some robin seed, put some out but it was a bit much so some was left, when I took the dog out I noticed loads of slugs snails eating the seed so I've been leaving small patches and they all congregate by the seed, sorry about your plants fab vlog Emma xx🥰

Copper tape works wonders with snail problem I suffer from the same thing until I used the copper tape
We have used beer traps this year and the slugs love it.
Worth buying a couple bottles beer for the snails ,they wont eat ur veges and flowers if they have choice of beer
Even make an home brew ,snails s.ugs will love it ,
U will allways have som on hand
It's the malt they love, I've read marmite works just as well
I enjoy your videos. You make me smile. I recommend a good escargot recipe 😊
Ive nade a garlic and tea tree spray going to try it tomorrow see how it goes
Try strops of brambles around your crops just cut a few and put them around the crops the slugs and snail wil get spiked and won't go near also did you set a slug trap
As I keep saying chop up brambles and nettles and use like strulch everywhere not just bits
Bring out the beer traps... works every time.....
Diatomaceous earth is a great natural snail/slug deterrent
Your plot still looks amazing X
I have started to collect & put the snails from my back garden into the front . They really are a nuisance 🫤
Good job with the blackberry twigs if you can put some more on the other side of your peas,it definitely works for me and cats and foxes wont tread on the thorns.CUT some smaller blackberry twigs about 4in long and put them all around the stems of your peas 👌 lovely to see Tom ❤

I feel your pain, the little buggers had my cucumber and marigold seedlings, then they decided to have a go on my beetroot that I’d planted out 🙄😢

Gather the snails and put in the compost bin
I think I said before try nematodes 😊, any slugs and snails in my garden get catapulted cross the railway tracks at the bottom of my garden. ✈️🐌✈️
😂😂
Try chilli flakes for slugs and snails it really works
Oh my goodness they had them all!😩🤦🏼♀️
New subscriber excited to support you emma❤❤
put copper tape round your stems, works for me here in Manchester
put small holes in soda bottles and invert over the plants
The snails in my garden are collecting Air miles as I keep throwing them across the garden
What about putting something slippery on the outside of the wood around your raised beds so hopefully the slugs and snails will not be able to crawl up and just slide off.
I lost all mine last week too Emma to the slugs!!!
Sorry about the brassica massacre the tulips are looking lovely. Once the weather starts warming up the snail problem should decrease love all the vlogs xx😊
Have you tried diatomaceous earth or ground coffee
I have used nematodes and I really believed it's helped with slugs. Still snails around but manageable.
I know slug pellets are taboo, but the chemical ones aren’t banned now. So the ones available don’t harm other animals. They’re also often labelled organic, although I think that’s debatable. I do wonder if the taboo still applies or if they’re a reasonable option.
Have you looked for organic snail and slug traps. I have seen them with beer and molasses.
egg shells crumbled up for a slug and snail deterant
Hi Emma just a heads up but Aldi have 1/2 wellies on the special buys this week
These darn slugs and snails! Im two months into having my plot here in Devon and most of my radishes have been raviged, along with some of the onions and bulbs. Snap this weather has brought all the snails out loads of them
Lol he is such a boy!!😂😂😂 love it
Put down some slug pellets, for goodness sake girl, they are laughing at you.Are you growing food for you or snails?Love your channel.
Emma feel your pain . It is better to start the seeds inside until the plant is stronger.
You should know what to do by now 😊
Think it's time to get some beer traps down need to get those snails under control
You need a hedgehog and lizards, they eat them like lollipops. I would be making little tents out of mesh to place over all of your seedlings while you clear up the snails and slugs.
Some of the munching might be ants. They've had a field day on my rhubarb leaves. Thankfully left the stalks alone.
Use Diatomaceous Earth for the slugs next time
Apparently snails have a homing instinct but this could be overcome by moving them more than 20 metres away. Maybe Tom could help you with a massive snail collecting mission and take the little critters for a drive to be deposited elsewhere. Is that a thing I wonder? Fly tipping snails? Beer traps. They catch loads
If you plant marigolds or other flowers snails and slugs love to eat near the stuff you want to eat they will leave most of your stuff so yes always needs scraficial spots 😢
Hi Emma why not grow plants in pots or containers when they are bigger plant them out on your plot that might work good luck
Are these videos a week or so behind? Maybe we have different school holidays up here as mine went back this week :)
We get rid of slugs and snails by putting out containers filled with beer. They crawl in and drown.
I just got.mine to day from B&Q £ 2 for 6 plants
Get some slug killer sell at all garden centres and B Q
L
I'm so sorry Emma can you start again 😢xx
Emma, my daughter and I absolutely love the jumper you are wearing in this vlog! Where can we get hold of one please, or did you knit it yourself?
She got it from Boden but sadly not available now only in blue and white.
Thank you!
Ur son is getting so tall..x
EMMA...
COFFEE GROUNDS PLEASE GIVE IT A TRY THEY ARE FREE
Put beer traps down as slugs love beer!
Why don't u get some beer traps for ur slug and snails. And with ur peas u can fit 3 peas per plug
