You don’t just start the car, you have to flood-start it, because the oil filter is empty. You press the accelerator completely and start. The engine won’t turn on, but it builds oil pressure and fills the filter. Do that a few times until the oil light turns off. Now you’re ready to start the car normally. This function exists to prevent motor damage from oil starvation, especially with the filter upside down on top. Know your electronic-helpers.
Enjoy your Subaru!
Heads up: the 2019's may have a little cover with push-clips one can pry out with a flathead screwdriver. The cover may be labelled "Engine Oil"
Thanks for the tip! +nicholaicheck
Mine had that cover too. You can remove all but 1 of the rivets, and spin the cover to expose the drain plug. You’ll need an extension and know that the plug sits at a 45 degree angle
+roogermoore1 Thanks for the feedback!
“””Attention””” Please be careful that do don’t accidentally empty the cvt fluid in stead. On a 2018 forester the oil plug is under a plastic cover. I may have ruined my transmission.
oh no! what did you do in the end
did this to my friends car :-/ paid to have it towed and cvt refill
Thanks
This video advises you to use a 14 mm wrench to remove the drain plug on the 2015 Forester. This is incorrect; instead you must use a 17 mm socket OR Closed wrench. Do not use anything else such as an open wrench or channel locks because by dong so you might damage and strip the drain plug, making it much more difficult to remove.
Wrong on the 17mm. My 2018 XT takes a 14mm socket/wrench.
Mine took 17mm too
@@PRO4XKEV my 2018 XT was 17mm but I upgraded my oil drain plug so now it’s 19mm.
14 mm on my sister's 2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i, so apparently they vary with year and model.
Pretty sure the manual specifies OW-20 oil so I think you might be using the wrong oil
came here to say this. saw somewhere else you can substitute but it doesn't sit right with me
It’s because this model is the XT model with the 2.0 so it uses 5w30. The 2.5 takes 0w20.
Weird. My Haynes book suggests 0w-30. For the 2013 non-turbo.
1A auto I am not in anyway suggesting that my mistake is your fault. But please consider adding a warning message at the beginning of this video for people to be careful not to drain the wrong fluid. The the transmission plug is a 14 mm plug on the under side of the car just behind the actual oil plug that is hidden under plastic. I’ve never experienced a set up like this, maybe I’m just used to older cars. I drained the cvt fluid by accident thinking I was draining engine oil then preceded to fill the oil 5.5qt ran the car for 20sec the. Checked level to find that it was way too full. So I got back under and drained a bit more fluid started the car for a few seconds and checked again. Still too full. Long story short. I realized my mistake and am now having my car towed to the dealership to service. They said it would be a Minimum of $400 unless I screwed up my transmission in which case it’ll be closer to 10,000
Update? Plus I think these guys are using different 5w-30 than the 0w-20. I GUESS that's ok? At least he's using full synthetic!
No offense, but if you know anything about cars, then what you did could have easily been avoided with common car sense. The CVT sits way too far back in the drive train to be the oil pan. It makes no sense. Its also clearly not part of the engine, which is what the oil is for. I'm sorry you messed up your car, but maybe you don't need to be changing your oil if you can't recognize the transmission from the bottom of the engine. And Subaru has been putting drain plugs on their transmissions for at least 25 years, so 2 mins of research would have probably forwarded you about it.
Jeez man that sucks. I wouldn't think that could do very much damage to the transmission since the car was in neutral and at low rpm.
@@dgunearthed7859 This vehicle is the XT Turbo engine, it takes 5w-30 oil...5.5 quarts with new filter.
Since you did not attempt to drive it- you probably did no harm. Drain the oil and refill with the correct amount. Top up the transmission with the correct TYPE and amount and you're good to go. BTW I've been doing my own oil changes for 50 years - YES 50 and a few years back I did this exact same thing on my 2010 Hyundai Accent. Several thousand miles later-- no harm no foul!
I dunno why but that oil looks delish
Remove oil filter while draining oil, will drain old oil completely. Don’t rush!
The standard Forester and the Forester XT take different types and volumes of oil. You probably have an XT in the video.
@NoNonsensePC just got the same model a few days ago, this is one if the most underrated cars on the market. The visibility in this vehicle is unmatched, even the 2019 feels a lot more closed off
I don't tighten the filter too much, and they come off with just by hand.
Thanks!
The oil capacity is 4.8 litres not 6 quarts.
Weird, I got a Haynes book for my Forester and it suggests 0w-30 for my non turbo 2.5x AWD.
Great vid
+William Johnson Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks.!
Requires 0w/20
Bill Gordon this is probably a turbo, which takes 5w-30👍🏼
+Tom Korell Thanks for the feedback!
Turbo takes 5w-30
I don't have lift for my vehicle. How else could I raise the vehicle off the ground to drain the oil?
kurtmichaelson small lift ramps available at the auto parts store
Get a car jack or car ramps?
Foresters are very easy to get the oil out of without lifting. There is more than enough ground clearance, and the drain plug is very near the front of the vehicle. I just lie down on the garage floor (in a shirt I don't care about and maybe some cardboard) and go to town. About to go out and do that right now - visited this video for my annual refresher :)
This video shows wrong information on tools needed 17mm wrench needed
+fdjolic27 Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
14mm is the correct size. I have a 2018 XT.
Curious why he only let it run for 20 seconds. The oil doesn’t have time to warm up and expand. That didn’t make sense to me. I felt like he added too much oil at that point
XT 2.0 Turbo.
17MM. Also which way does the seal (Crush washer) go? Yeah flat side toward car
My 2018 XT takes a 14mm for the drain plug.
Who keeps their engine bay this dirty? Shame.
+Kingsley Zissou Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
5.75 quarts of oil?! I don't see how that's possible. Maybe 5.5 if it's a turbo model.
+007JeffDog The video does mention 5.1 quarts of oil is required.
@@1AAuto right, so 5.75 quarts seems like an overfill, though it's also mentioned in the video. Maybe he was checking it hot, without letting the oil drain back down. I've had "pro" mechanic shops overfill my oil before, which is one if the many reasons I do it myself.
@@1AAuto The manual (at least for a 2017 model) says that 5.4 quarts of oil are needed. That's equal to 5.1 liters though, which is also listed in the manual, so maybe that's where that number came from?
What's minimum requirement for oil? Usually you can buy 5 quarter oil bucket or one quarter bucket and for amount you needed. Wouldn't 5 quarter enough to cover up the engine components?
