    The best time to water a lawn is usually very early in the morning, around 4-6 am. This is the time when the relative humidity (% moisture air mass can hold) is at its highest (meaning it can't hold much if any additional moisture) and the air temperature is at the lowest point (near the dew point temperature). This means that the air can't hold much more in additional moisture. When this occurs, you'll have very little evaporation happening so this is the ideal item to water the lawn. This window is fairly tight and even in the 7-9 am timeframe you'll be losing water to evaporation since the relative humidity and air temperature can swing quite a bit in a matter of an hour.

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes  Год назад +3

      Thats good information to know. My irrigation starts at 3am and is done by 7. What I stated in the video is the time you want to have your irrigation completed not starting. So we are in agreement that the start time is going to be very early to be completed by the timeframe stated. Thanks for watching.

    @dalewiley9208 Год назад

    Well it helps when the lawn is mostly shaded and this is especially true for cool season lawns.

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes  Год назад +1

      Of course shade provides relief to the lawn but that also comes with a different set of challenges also with moisture management and disease pressure. I actually have a video that shows the downside of growing grass in the shade.

    • @dalewiley9208
      @dalewiley9208 Год назад

      @@ElevatedLawnscapesIndeed. However, disease pressure and water management are constant issues even when fescue is located in the sun. Fescue grown in mostly shaded conditions reduces or eliminates one of the main variables, heat. Fescue is labeled a cool season grass for a reason.

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes  Год назад

      @@dalewiley9208 Growing in sun you have more control of moisture management due to the grass being able to dry out after rainfall or irrigation. Whereas in shady areas moisture is held for longer which is a double edge sword when we cannot control rainfall. It can be debated and opinions can be spoken but there is supporting evidence of why sod farms are in full sun and the performance of their turf. Speaking with 2 of those farmers in my area their best turf comes out of areas in full sun and not the shady areas. Fescue will do just fine in heat with proper cultural practices. There are times in the season where its going thrive and then there times when it is going to just survive...its the natural cycle. Right now fescue is just surviving which is why I call this time the 4th qtr, its just trying to make it to cooler temps of the fall.

    • @dalewiley9208
      @dalewiley9208 Год назад

      @@ElevatedLawnscapesYou are correct when you say it can be debated. In my personal experience the portion of my fescue lawn that is shaded always performs better than the sections in direct sunlight when temperatures are consistently in the high 80s and 90s for extended periods. Your mileage may vary. However, the climate in Maryland is generally cooler than that in south side Virginia. Your advice should take geographical differences into consideration.

    Would be curious to hear your thoughts on Zoysia lawns. Great video, thanks for sharing.

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes  Год назад

      I like Zoysia lawns when installed in the right conditions. It is a warm season grass type so you will have to deal with the brown winter dormancy depending on where you are located. In the transition zone it performs well during the summer months. It has a slower grow rate compared to most warm season grass types and seems to get by with lower inputs. Most warm season grass types perform much better in full sun or mostly sun locations, if there is a lot of shade it may not perform as well. So, I think it is a good option when installed under the right conditions. BTW MVP Genetics apart of Mountain View Seeds has developed a newer Zoysia cultivar that they are working to get into production. Thanks for watching.

    Cutting cutting my Mountain View at ~2" in my back and side yard that gets a lot of shade this time of year... Back yard actually has one part that gets more sun than the rest and it's still going strong... Side yard has a few struggle spots, but area of the yard I'm working on amending because it has a lot of gravel washed out from our old driveway (have fixed that issue with a small retaining wall) that's built up over the years... Not doing too bad so far, mostly just areas I had already identified as still needing some work.

      @@ElevatedLawnscapes It's definitely been hot and the humidity is ramping up now so we'll have to see how it holds up. With the shade, like you said, hopefully it's the right combo... I've only watered the back and side yard I think twice with the sprinklers so far... Every time I've mowed it so far, the clippings still seem like the grass is getting the water still, like the clippings are saturated, but definitely dry, same with the soil.

      Thanks 🙏🏾! I am working on a potential online option for everyone. As far as locally in NC, I'm not sure you will have to check out your local seed distributors and see if they have it.

    My lawn. Alberta. Hot and dry. 95F during the day. Dog pissing on it all day. An arms race. Too much nutrients due to dog piss. Some burned out spots that I try and fix. Need to water the hell out of it. Need the nutrient levels to stabilize. Mowing higher. Bagging the clippings to stabilize nutrients. Grass grows an inch a day. It is hell. Haha.

      Nutrient management is very important and I started talking about that at the beginning of this season. Pushing too much growth can come back to bite you this time of the year. Hope you can get things worked out. Thanks for watching!

      Later in the evening typically when the sun setting or has set. That early in the morning the grass is typically still wet with dew.

      I'm in Maryland. So we can get some dips in temps during winter. Coming out of winter ny lawn is typically completely brown and yellow with no color. I have a few videos where I show that and I think I have posted some pictures on my community page during the winter months:

    What rotor sprinklers are you using, and how long does it take for you to hit 1/2"? Thanks!

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes  Год назад +1

      Hunter PGPs. Its kinda of irrelevant for me to tell you how long it takes for me to get a .5" down because of the many different variables in irrigation. Like zone overlap, head to head coverage, water flow rate, nozzle size, etc. As stated in the video, individual evaluation will need to be done to assess how long the irrigation needs to run.

    I need your help. My plan for the month of August is to do a over seed of my KBG with a TTTF Blend with 80% KBG. So I started cutting my lawn lower until I get it down to 2- 2 1/2 inches then give it a deep Dethatching and core aerating. I asked my lawn service not to fertilize and not to put a weed killer on the lawn at this time because of my over seeding plans. They said that the fertilizer that they would use would have no effect on the seeding. However when they left their report in the mailbox, it mentioned the presents of a weed called Wild Violets and that they treated for it. I live in Connecticut. I’ve taken samples of soil from different parts of the front lawn and sent them off the the Lab and it came back with very good results. So do you think I should go forward with my Over Seeding plans at this time or hold off a fight with the weeds in the early spring. I am SO pump to get started, but I don’t want to waste applying the seed if there’re not going to germinate. Any advise?

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes  11 месяцев назад +1

      I would call them and ask exactly what herbicide they sprayed. You can Google that herbicide and find out how long you need to wait before seeding on the label.

      It can depending on your temps. It may not go completely dormant or brown like Zoysia though. Zoysia is a warm season grass type to it goes completely dormant during winter. If you are looking for a fescue I would recommend any of the cultivars from Mountain View Seed.

      I make a plan at the beginning of the season and make all my purchases then. Like every thing there are different levels. You can consistently do the basic cultural practices and have nice lawn that most people will be happy with. The choice is yours on what you are comfortable with. Thanks for watching.
