I’m in western Wisconsin. We had high temps and humidity during Labor Day Weekend so had to wait 1 week before doing what I would call a full renovation on my 11,000 square foot lawn. I had to build up 6” of topsoil in front of my house and slope it towards the street. 7 1/2 cubic yards was used. I dethatched and aerated the entire lawn before doing so. Once the topsoil was down, I spread 4 cubic yards of manure compost on the entire lawn, followed by Jonathan Green Black Beauty seed and their started fertilizer. Typical first freeze is late September up here, so here’s to praying that it won’t happen until October!
@@DellBurns Nice! Just keep them moist. The heat this week is why I held off. September get so dry around here every year. Im not seeding my client lawns until the end of September. Without rain and soil moisture the seed is not going to germinate anyway.

On your recommendation from a previous video, I picked up a bag of the Mountain View seed from Newsom Seed, a few of weeks ago and will be overseeding once this MD heat wave goes away. It took me almost an hour to get there, but every time I see your results, I know it's going to be well worth it. I'm looking forward to the next 30 - 45 days 😀
Great video and good music too. It's 96 degrees today in southern MD. All I can do at this time point is wait and hopefully get some improved over seeding weather. I don't even want to do any dethatching to stress (TTF) it out even further, just water early in the AM and get some needed rain. Got some MVS Top Choice and Jonathan Green Sun/Shade seed ready week 3 of Sept.
Waiting is the best thing to do. There is plenty of growing season left. September is one of the driest months in Maryland. The seed is not going to grow the best anyway.

Just keep the seed moist and you will be fine. Evaluating the current and upcoming weather forecast is a big factor in deciding when I seed, especially if it is just 1 yard.
I’m battling the heat wave I finished my front yard Labor Day but 24 hours before put fungicide down. I used Mountain View and KBG. Fyi my front yard has in ground irrigation. Three times a day on day three.

Hopefully, we can get some rain and I can get down some fert down to start some fall recovery with cooler temps.
Correct, I didn't. This will be my second year of not aerating. Aeration for home lawns is not always necessary. There are cases where it should be done but in most home lawns its not required.

Its been a hot week AND its DRY!!! Not the best seeding conditions which is the reason I waited. Hopefully we get some rain this weekend then I will get started on mine next week.
@ElevatedLawnscapes was hoping to drop some seed tomorrow but we are expecting a washout in CT. How are you guys doing down there with weather? I spoke to one of the guys at siteone Landscaping and he said that most of their contractors are waiting until next week for much cooler Temps. Supposed to be mid-70s
It depends on what your desired height of cut is and how much your grass has grown. I would still attempt to stay close to the 1/3 rule and not removing more than 1/3 of the grass blade. You may be slightly over that on this first cut.
I just overseeded yesterday. I put down a thin layer of peat moss over the seed to enhance moisture retention. Since you didn't show that step in your video, now I'm worried that I screwed up and that maybe it will prevent sunlight from hitting the seedlings. Could you comment on this, please? Thank you!
Everything will be fine! You did not screw up. Grass seed does not require sunlight for germination. With proper soil temps and moisture the seed will germinate. I did not perform this step because peat moss is not a required step, especially in an overseeding situation. Peat moss can help with moisture retention but again, it is not required. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾!
It depends on how much grass you are cutting off during that first mow. If you are only taking off a normal maintenance amount of grass, 1/3 or less of the leaf blade you can mulch as normal. If you are cutting off significantly more than that because of how much your lawn has grown, I would bag it then get back to more regular mowing.
I have an overseeding reno on the calendar for this fall, and am sold on how good the MVS looks on your property! I live in zone 9 and want the darkest green I can get, currently lawn is mostly a tall fescue carried by Ewing but I sure seem to deal with a lot of disease pressure and it gets green, just not green green. Any suggestions on fescue cultivar? Thanks ahead of time!
I have used almost all the MVS TTTF cultivars and would recommend any of LS cultivars in a 3 or 4 cultivar blend. There is a link in the description to a seed blend that I would recommend. Thanks for watching.
Love the content as always! Completely killed out my front lawn this summer. Im in Reisterstown so ive put off seeding until next week but did a full walk through yesterday and i have serious soil and moss issues. 🤦🏾♀️ 😬
Typically moss is a sign of an area that doesn't get much sunlight or is holding moisture for long periods of time. Those 2 things are should be addressed and make sure to remove the existing moss before seeding. Hope everything goes well.
I would recommend a warm season grass type St. Augustine is one of those. I prefer Bermuda over St. Augustine. Many Bermuda cultivars can be grown from sod, plugs, sprigs, or seed depending on the cultivar you choose. With all the different grass types you have it may be time for a renovation to start with a clean slate. But I do not know the full condition of your current lawn.
Im definitely going to be making the move to mountain view. I planted triple threat plus 97 tttf and 3 kbg last year with wonderful results but your backyard has always blown me away. Ill be doing a reno on my neighbors yard and she will get some of my triple threat plus to help get rid of it.
It might not be the right seed for you, based on your location. This is a cool season grass type. I would recommend using a warm season grass type in Florida. It can be done, but in my opinion, the effort and resources required is not worth it when you can grow a warm season grass type much easier and cheaper.
I did what you said not to. My bare dirt reno of LS cultivars washed out a little and it caused over crowding. I’m thinking wait until the fall, dethatch, aerate and maybe over seed bare areas… and maybe survival of the fittest will thin the lawn out a little by then? I have a little disease now if I do digging. Thoughts?
I agree with your plan. Make sure you stick to your disease program, keep it from getting overgrown, and don't over water. The typical cultural practices.
Hi. I over seeded my lawn about 17days ago and I’m just waiting for the 21days mark before my first mow even though it’s super bushy. What type of weed control can I put on a newly seeded lawn? 2. If I chose not to apply any weed control just to avoid damaging the new grass, can I apply spectracide weed control granular early spring next year as a pre-emergent?
After you get at least 3 mows on it can use the usual weed control products. I am not a fan of using weed control in the fall on new grass unless I have a major weed problem that is not allowing the grass to grow and fill in. I recommend getting your pre-emergent down in the spring and use a weed control then to kill your weeds. You can use a granular pre-emergent but I recommend spraying your pre-emergent for better coverage and more effective application.
Hey man great video and I'm a new subscriber. I'm on Long Island NY and I just finished overseeding this past week just in time for all the rain this weekend. My question is if my backyard is 2500 square feet and I have a scotts mini spreader and the Jonathan Greene seed says put my spreader on 6, how do I know if I'm achieving the 3-5lb per 1k square feet? What is the tried and true method for achieving the proper lbs per 1000 feet? Thanks in advance to you or anyone else that replies.
There are a couple of steps to ensure this. One, see if the label states the overseeding rate per the specified setting for your spreader. Two, calibrate your spreader's seed rate per 1000 square feet. You should apply 3-5 lbs of seed within that area. If not, you will need to adjust your spreader's setting. Three, you can weigh the seed prior to application to ensure you're putting down the proper amount. Thanks for watching and good luck on your overseeding!
I just seeded today our temps have cooled down and we have good soil moisture right now. If you are seeding with fescue late Sept will work, its only a couple weeks away.
I'm not sure if you are talking about my final height of cut after overseeding? After overseeding you can go to whatever your desired height of cut is.
I just seeding some MVS KBG mix (365ss) about 9 days ago. Located in 6A... Was that too late? Also, should I be spoon feeding this a little bit during October or just wait until next spring? Thx man.
I doubt that it was too late. Refer to the avg first frost table in the video and back up 45-60 days and thats your time for seeding. Spoon feeding is ok but you will need to do it frequently. The fall is the time to really feed cool season grass types. You should be getting about 50-60% of your total yearly amount of N down in the fall.
Appreciate the video! I plan on going through this process soon. What are your thoughts on spreading peat moss after overseeing? Do you think this is a necessary step or one I can skip?
I stay in Richmond, VA which isn't to far frome you. In the past I have focused on the 2nd week in September but this summer has been so hot that I don't want the heat to burn my seeds. Do you think with adequate watering I can still put my seeds down in the same time frame? Love your videos and lawn!!
My advice is exactly what I said in the video. Watch your current weather, the soil temps, and your frost date. It can be done but if you are not able to keep the seed moist you are not going to have optimal results. When you seed may need to be flexible depending on your weather. Don't make it harder on yourself than it has to be if the conditions are not right for seeding.
How do you like your 30 in 60v toro mower? I have a 25 in green works 60v mover. I was thinking of getting a 30 in mower. I have found my green works to be a little under powered. I have have had to mow the lawn twice when I mulch because it clumps up.
I have found the same issue all the Toro 60V. You have to stay on top of the mowing. When the grass is thick and tall they do not perform as well. I don't have any issues when the lawn is maintained regularly. I think the 30 is a little under powered also.
You need to water as often or less often as it takes to keep the seed moist. There is no set number of times or amount of time. It varies from lawn to lawn.
I have not heard of it. I looked up the label for the seed and it has some percentage of weed seed and other crop seed on all the labels that I saw. That is a no-go for me when I pick my seed.
Don't get it a guy on my street used it and it either checked out or had a bad Fungus outbreak soon as Temps heated up. Keep in mind I don't think it's a blend but a mono stand which makes it harder to maintain.
I do not recommend it. St. Augustine is a warm season that does not need to be overseeded. It will go dormant in the winter depending on your location and climate. The left texture of St. Augustine and rye that you would overseed with is not going to match at all or even be close.
Yes now is the time to do this so that you can seed the areas that need it after leveling. It depends on how deep your dips are which materials to use. For small dips and bumps use sand. For major dips/leveling use topsoil then switch to sand for fine tuning later. It may take a couple rounds of topdressing to get it where you want. Once you start using sand continue using sand. Don't switch back and forth with topsoil and sand.
Awesome video, EL what do you recomend for sprinklers above ground solutions for renovating my yard. Going from from warm to cool . After my reno I got to get it wet. Please give me your best recommendation. Thank you sir, I am going fescue because of this great channel. Thanks a bunch Bye Bye burmuda. smh lol. I wanted that Iron cutter, I couldn't find it. I found MVS !!!
It depends on how much area you have to cover, your flow rate, and pressure. I will say that I like the Hunter PGP irrigation heads and that's what I use mostly. I am testing out the MP Rotators but they have a very low precipitation rate. I have s couple videos on the channel about my above grown system.
The MPs may work well for your lawn size. You probably could get away with 4 total. 2 in series in the front and 2 in the back if you have the pressure for them.
What 'winterizer' fertilizer should I be using (besides soil alive), and when is the appropriate time to drop it on the lawn? Hopefully, I'm not jumping ahead of your videos...
There is not a winterizer fert, its marketing for your last fert application. You should always apply fert based on what your soil needs from your soil test. Timing is going to depend on your location. Late season fert applications are not the most efficient for getting nutrients into the plant because nutrient and water uptake is less in the late season.
It's up to you if you prefer to have some of the different cultivars that are included in the Northeast Mix. Typically, those blends have cultivars that are chosen to perform well in that area. It's not necessary if you are happy with your TTTF. Thanks for watching.
great vid, can you do a levelling vid on your KBG? Ive made two attempts on mine and failed both times the grass never grew back through the play sand / moisture control miracle grow soil mixture. (ontario, canada). feel like its almost easier to just remove sod, level then replace with new sod. thanks!
I do not have an area to use for that type process right now. One reason for the KBG not growing through your leveling material is that it was applied too thick. KBG is not like Bermuda, you cannot cover it completely and expect it to grow back through the leveling material. You will need to lightly topdress your KBG so that you are not covering the leaf blades and the KBG can continue to grow. If you do have areas that need more aggressive leveling and the grass blades get covered, you will need to reseed those areas. I hope this helps.
Thanks for the video, your tips are very appreciated! one question, do you reccommend spraying some pre emergent like Tenacity at seeding? or it will kill the new grass seedlings? I'm plannig to overseed with all kentucky blue. Thanks again!
I recommend taking care of your weeds properly with the required post emergent herbicide before seeding and waiting the appropriate period before seeding. I do not apply pre-emergents after I have seeded. Tenacity is safe at the time of seeding but is not a very effective post emergent weed control alone.
Do you think this seed would do good where I live in Southern California? It’s a transition zone like where you are but I’m in the high desert city of California. Temps get into the 100s during the summer and in the winter it gets really cold. Thanks in advance
Say if I have a bagger for my push. I’m cutting my yard from 3.25-3.50 inches down to 2.25 for the seed. Will I still need a dethatch even If go over yard multiple times to get clippings and previous mulched clippings?
Yes I recommend dethatching. Cutting the grass lower and bagging is not the same as dethatching or power raking. Dethatching is going to help open up the grass canopy and expose the soil for the seed to contact. Cutting your grass lower is because you are not going to cut it for a couple weeks and it makes the dethatching process easier.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes thanks planning on doing some tall fescue this week just looking for a good fertilizer! Seeing a lot of the regular slow releases with 0 phosphate and not liking that I want it kind of balanced! So just might go with a starter fert and if more need be later …..🎯
@@RefinedMayweather Some soils naturally have sufficient or high Phosphorus. If that is the case you do not need to add more. You could be wasting money and not getting any additional benefits from the added Phosphorus you are applying.

Yes, lower your height of cut then not cut it for 2-3 weeks to let the seed germinate and establish.

@@RUclipsuser1aa wow
@ElevatedLawnscapes was hoping to drop some seed tomorrow but we are expecting a washout in CT. How are you guys doing down there with weather? I spoke to one of the guys at siteone Landscaping and he said that most of their contractors are waiting until next week for much cooler Temps. Supposed to be mid-70s
Do have a link for the garden weasel. I saw the short video and yours is wider with more teeth than one I've seen in big box stores /amazon. Thx
The one on Amazon called the Garden Weasel is the one that I have. Its not very wide, maybe it looks that way on camera.
Did I spot the eTimemaster? I have my Artimuss seed (4 varieties of MVS), fertilizer, and plan on lightly top dressing bare spots with some compost.
Yes you did spot that 👍🏾!
How much of a cut do we want to do for the first mowing? Leave it at 2 1/2 inch’s?
It depends on what your desired height of cut is and how much your grass has grown. I would still attempt to stay close to the 1/3 rule and not removing more than 1/3 of the grass blade. You may be slightly over that on this first cut.
Your input gives me hope 🤙
Yessir 💪🏾
Have you heard of Pennington? When do I use it? Can I use it after I over seeded in fall? Thank you
Pennington makes a lot of products so I'm not sure which product your are asking about. I have not used any of their products.
Thanks very much for the info!!! ❤
Do you recomment bagging the grass during thr first mow? Or should we mulching
@@ElevatedLawnscapes that will be what gets used, thank you for your time 🤙🏻
What battery mower are you using in this video???
Toro eTimeMaster.
What grass seed should I use in central Texas I currently have st Augustine among other types of
I would recommend a warm season grass type St.
@ Thank you i appreciate your guidance on lawn care Have a blessed holiday time
Im definitely going to be making the move to mountain view. I planted triple threat plus 97 tttf and 3 kbg last year with wonderful results but your backyard has always blown me away. Ill be doing a reno on my neighbors yard and she will get some of my triple threat plus to help get rid of it.
That sounds like a plan. Every year that I plant MVS I have never been disappointed!
@@ElevatedLawnscapesjust ordered a 10lb bag of gci tttf for my neighbors yard. She just gave me the ok to smoke it off and start fresh.
I’m looking to do a full renovation next year, will that grass seed work in Florida
It might not be the right seed for you, based on your location. This is a cool season grass type. I would recommend using a warm season grass type in Florida. It can be done, but in my opinion, the effort and resources required is not worth it when you can grow a warm season grass type much easier and cheaper.
Damn that looks great 😊
Thanks!
Any recommendation for a fungicide at seeding due to a constant wet environment and warm temps.?
Check out this video. ruclips.net/video/qkEGOVGOv-4/видео.htmlsi=k9SIInNAXQ_6umAX
Great tips Cam! I was thinking about bare dirt seeding rate for my reno and was thinking 8 or 9lbs. Wasn’t going to do 10 with the MVS I’m using
Don't do it at 10lbs. I made that mistake the very first time I seeded with MVS. I still can't thin that area out enough 🤣.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes 8 lbs sounds good. My very first overseed ever it was super thin and I only went 6/k that year
Hey man great video and I'm a new subscriber.
Thanks for watching and good luck on your overseeding!
so for this year have you already overseeded? Im in NOVA and its been so hot and the soil temps so high, im thinking late sept early oct? Thoughts?
I just seeded today our temps have cooled down and we have good soil moisture right now. If you are seeding with fescue late Sept will work, its only a couple weeks away.
Are you leaving the cut height the same as when you prepped for the first mow?
I'm not sure if you are talking about my final height of cut after overseeding? After overseeding you can go to whatever your desired height of cut is.
Great video! Easy to follow and to the point. Looking forward to seeing how my MV Top Choice works out this season!
Glad it was helpful! Wishing you the best!
@@ElevatedLawnscapes thanks man 👍👍
Looking gd 💪 in our favorite time of yr for grass!
You got that right! Its go time!
That an etimemaster? How do you like it?
Yes it is. I haven't used it a lot but I'm liking it so far.
Appreciate the video! I plan on going through this process soon. What are your thoughts on spreading peat moss after overseeing? Do you think this is a necessary step or one I can skip?
There is a video linked at the end of this video that provides you my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Well done.👍
Thanks 👍🏾
Does lawn roller needed after over seeding. Just to press down the seed to ground
It is not required. I have never used one and have had great success with my overseeding.
Thank you for reply. I am done with pre germination of the seed in water. I am gonna spread them this week.
Is it best to water your lawn in the morning??
Yes
How do you like your 30 in 60v toro mower? I have a 25 in green works 60v mover. I was thinking of getting a 30 in mower. I have found my green works to be a little under powered. I have have had to mow the lawn twice when I mulch because it clumps up.
I have found the same issue all the Toro 60V. You have to stay on top of the mowing. When the grass is thick and tall they do not perform as well. I don't have any issues when the lawn is maintained regularly. I think the 30 is a little under powered also.
In September, dew on the lawn until around noon. Do I still need to water 3-5 times a day?
You need to water as often or less often as it takes to keep the seed moist. There is no set number of times or amount of time. It varies from lawn to lawn.
Have you heard of a seed called Titan Rx turf fescue, they say it survives the heat.
@@johnnelwhite From the labels that I saw it is a monostand and not a blend.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes your correct I may have got my words mixed up.
Thoughts on overseeding st agustine grass on winter?
I do not recommend it. St. Augustine is a warm season that does not need to be overseeded. It will go dormant in the winter depending on your location and climate. The left texture of St. Augustine and rye that you would overseed with is not going to match at all or even be close.
Quick question: should I try to level off dips in my yard at this time? If so, how do you recommend I level it (materials, etc)? Thanks!
Great video.
Thanks!
@@ElevatedLawnscapes I appreaciate your kind words. 2000 on the front 2000 on the back. Thank you !!!!!
The MPs may work well for your lawn size. You probably could get away with 4 total. 2 in series in the front and 2 in the back if you have the pressure for them.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes TY, You are that GUY !!!!!!
Northeast@@ElevatedLawnscapes
Silly question for you, im up in Massachusetts, i have tttf, should I be overseeding with the northeast mix?
It's up to you if you prefer to have some of the different cultivars that are included in the Northeast Mix. Typically, those blends have cultivars that are chosen to perform well in that area. It's not necessary if you are happy with your TTTF. Thanks for watching.
What fertilizer shoi
You should use one that has the nutrients that your soil needs per your soil test.
great vid, can you do a levelling vid on your KBG?
Yes it will work but you will need water to keep it green in the summer months.
Could you aerate and over-seed without using any top soil?
There is no need to use topsoil unless you are leveling the lawn. A typical overseed is just aeration or dethatching and overseed.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes good to know! Thanks!

@@RefinedMayweather have you done a soil test that you need the Phosphorus?
@@ElevatedLawnscapes no it’s just that the yard wasn’t regularly fertilized and it helps with root development
@@RefinedMayweather Some soils naturally have sufficient or high Phosphorus. If that is the case you do not need to add more. You could be wasting money and not getting any additional benefits from the added Phosphorus you are applying.
What fertilizer did you use?
It varies based on the time of year, soil test needs and what i am looking to get out of the fertilizer application.
