Hand-to-hand is so unique that not only it can damage ghosts and enemies immune to weapon tiers, but also Fighters Guild does not recognize it as a weapon. Having high h2h but not other weapon skills, FG will not let them join them because they wont allow people that "can't fight". Also Medicine not only increases hp regen when resting (and its better than you think as all quests have a time limit), it also shortens the time for character to recognize that you contracted a disease or get poisoned. All diseases in the game are lethal, if you don't treat them in time and fast travel anywhere you just drop dead on arrival. Poisons slowly chip your hp bar away until you drop dead as well.
Unfortunately Medical quickly becomes a chore to level up because it requires several in-game years for you to sleep through. It's one of the skills you always have to train with the trainers, or else it'll be stuck in low 10s for the rest of the game. On most of my characters with 100s of hours it was always underleveled.
I think in the base unity version that's been changed, diseases are no longer so lethal! I haven't done any mods so far and was able to get a disease and survive it lol!
@@BurningM From what I know the diseases work by draining character stats per day, if any of the stats reaches zero your char dies. Diseases have various magnitutes with the lowest being 1 and highest 30 with the Cholera and Plague. So if you got lucky and got any magnitude 1 of the stat you have 70-80 in, you can survive for very long time and not even notice it. This behavior has not changed in Unity and its always good to have cure disease potion or spell at hand, or immunity to disease advantage.
Hand-to-hand, not just in Daggerfall but also Morrowind and Oblivion is basically like eastern martial arts. It isn't just your fist that is hitting the ghost. It's your chi that hits them, and that is magical by it's nature. And that the fighters guild doesn't accept it also plays a bit into that. A big reason why "king fu monks", developed those martial arts is because they weren't allowed to carry weapons. So they made their body the weapon.
Love a good daggerfall video! For anyone thinking about getting into the game, really consider making your own class! This game is absolutely brutal when it comes to poison, paralyzation, and diseases, and a custom class can null all of them!
"Ambient nudity" - now here's something I definitely didn't have on my bingo card. Damn it. "Take the stairs. But if they're to heavy, just climb them." xD "Take the door on your left. If it's to heavy, just open it and go through." - I love this "protest" against linguistic logic
@@JustBackgroundNoise I think the public story is that Zurin heroically sacrificed himself or something but there are many versions, including the one where Wulfharth and Septim turn on Zurin Arctus and feed his soul to the Mantella.
One of the public stories is that, after winning his major wars, Tiber kept using the Numidium for increasingly petty rebel-crushing, which Zurin didn't approve, so to stop this he attacked and shattered the Numidium. Which would mean that technically Zurin did rebel against the emperor and therefore betrayed him, but, really, the emperor betrayed Zurin's trust first by misusing the Numidium. (though one might argue that its intended use wasn't much more humane or moral, either)
@@agihammerthief8953yeah, honestly believing the superweapon of that magnitude would only be used as threat for peace was honestly naive of him, but in that interpretation what would become under king was definitely in the right Plus, depending on which parts of The Real Barenziah are *actually* true, would be far from only time Tiber was a ahole about things
I love that chipmunk became a recurring hero through our elder scrolls adventures, fisting his way through prophecies and bandits alike. Go chipmunk go !
I absolutely love Daggerfall, the Unity engine specifically. Being on Unity makes modding incredibly easy for modders and players. Depending on your level of mods the game can be anywhere from a fancy RPG to a full on fantasy life simulator, you can really lose yourself in this game
I love daggerfall so much. It's always a good day when there's a new DF video. My mom was diagnosed with cancer yesterday and I really needed this. Thanks brother.
Its an awful thing, I lost my dad to it like 15 years ago. A little optimism, a lot of forms of cancer are perfectly treatable today, so hopefully things work out for you
20:00 The letter was addressed to "The Queen of Daggerfall." Emperor didn't put the name on, just the title. When it arrived, Lysandus had been killed and the Queen was now Aubk-i, not Mynisera. Mini-Sarah. Meany Sarah.
It really is such an Emperor thing to forget the name of some random mistress who entertained him decades ago, who also turned into a queen in some backwater, insignificant county that somehow ends up housing the Super McGuffin he desperately needs to maintain his power over the land.
@@1thevm1 I mean, she was the wife of "[...] as great and loyal a subject, ally, and friend to me as you are." (To the player character). And he explicitly name drops Queen Mynisera when sending the player on his quest: "Several years ago, I sent a letter to Lysandus’ Queen Mynisera."
Ahhh, Daggerfall my beloved. And one of the most digestible portrayals of the MSQ dungeons to boot! :u I like the main quests on paper - the intermingling politics of the Bay is a really interesting concept - but as you said, the low points can get pretty rough. It’s easy to see why the guilds and sidequesting take so much of the spotlight, since I think the game’s a lot more fun when you’re creating your own character and your own story to tell.
Love that you keep it real with all the level-design criticism of the older games. Too many people are nostalgia-coded to ignore the flaws of daggerfall because they've played through it so many times and just don't notice. I would love to see more daggerfall on this channel.
I've never seen people be nostalgia blinded for Daggerfall. huh. EDIT: I've been insulted by several people like that in a different video's comment section
Man you must be in very different circles than me lol, I've literally never seen a single person who played daggerfall before any of the other games, never seen anyone say the level design in that game is good either lol all ive ever seen is "its a janky convoluted mess but thats the charm of it."
With older games there are typically two schools of thought: 1) the game is perfect, anything afterwards is a cut down, casualised imitation. 2) The game is ugly and clunky and lacks any kind of convenience. And in a way both are right and wrong. Yes, those games weren't as casual, but they also lacked lots of convenience. More recent games have added many great things that improve on "just playing" them. The player was expected to do much more themselves. Who here has drawn a dungeon map on graph paper before? Because the game came with no map. Morrowind at least came with a big paper map that you could put on your wall. And that map made navigating the world and following the directions of questgivers much easier.
17:27 I'll wait here, in the place where I live and work, for the oddly specific time limit of 149 days, for you to kill one werewolf for me. It's not urgent, but don't take too long.
I love the weird dissonance between delivering instructions in plain english and attempting to sound natural, only to end with the most arbitrary video-gamey time limit on the task you've been given.
Manninarcos boon of fame didn't work in the original game, but it's fixed in Unity. It gives you 100 rep with every Provence, npc, guild faction. It's useful because, if you want to tinker with dark brotherhood, witches covens, daedric summoning, etc., you can join any faction and immediately ascend to rank 10 after 30 days and get all perks the faction offers (since your stats and skills are already at the minimum requirements since you already beat the damn game). It's pretty fun if you care about post game antics.
There is a funny bug in the DOS version - mages spam spells without delay (due to a fast processor), and every fight with mages (especially liches and vampires) turns into a one-shot fest. Beautiful video, as always.
I kind of like how weird the final dungeon is. It fits the idea of a realm of gods that goes beyond the understanding of mortals. But from a gameplay perspective it is agonizing. I can't imaging someone beating it without a guide.
2:30 >Critical Strike & Dodging are Random. No, they are not! They gain experience every time you hit (Critical Strike) or get hit (Dodging), even if you don't actually dodge. You can see this for yourself if you install the Viewable Skill Progress mod from the Daggerfall Unity Nexus.
That is basically how TES skills still work. You level them by using them. Even in Skyrim, you need a shield to level your block and you need to wear armor to level armor. The basic systems are still pretty much the same.
@@JustBackgroundNoise Arena is surprisingly playable with mods already. Get the dosbox config that changes the controls if you're not holding a modifier key, and up the CPU speed (every official pre-configged release has the CPU *way* too slow so the game is perma lagged.). The real challenge run for Arena is playing a non-mage and not casting 0 magicka spells (Arena is the only game where that's possible, and virtually all the non-attack options for that are broken), or playing a mage without using the spellmaker (almost all the premade spells are terrible).

@@MishraArtificer It's something they might try to do in TES VI. It's believed by fans that the Thalmor want to unmake Mundus so that everyone will return to Aetherius to live like the good ol' days before Lorkhan made the world. They did try to steal the Eye of Magnus, an artifact linked to the god Magnus who made the blueprints for Mundus, who is linked to at least one doomsday cult. The Mythic Dawn. That Thalmor guy in the College of Winterhold even said, "The power to unmake the world at my fingertips!" And parts of Adluin's Wall do talk about "the towers" and how Alduin appears to start a new kalpa when they get destroyed. The towers are essentially anchors of reality or something. Maybe. And Direnni Tower is one of them. It's actually the tower where the Divines came together to plot Lorkhan's death... I think. The Thalmor are actually all for Alduin being slain. Not once do they try and stop the Dragonborn from doing so. Probably because they want to keep to the current kalpa so they can sack Direnni Tower. I think their plan gets rid of a need for Alduin. to be fair, the king of worms' reward of granting maximum reputation in every faction is actually incredible. it basically completes every questline for you and makes everyone like you (also, fun fact: "the king of worms" and "mannimarco" are never explicitly stated to be the same person in the first two or three games)

Lhotun's quest is always my favourite part of the story. It really underlines the Shakespearean inspiration of the game. Tragically stupid and cruel nobility.
There is also a pacifist option for Lord Woodborne, you can find his diary and give it to Nulfaga or the Dowager Queen. They smear his reputation across illiac bay and he's ultimately tried and executed "off camera". This also puts Lysandus' soul to rest
btw if I'm not mistaken, I believe Daggerfall doesn't care which quest dungeon you go to, despite specifically calling one out. Supposedly as long as you complete "a" objective, it satisfies your current quest. I've never played it though, so I'm just going off of what was said during the Elder Scrolls anthology speedrun at a gdq event
I think that's Arena where you enter the same dungeon over and over again, like, seventeen times. But if it was Daggerfall, the Unity port probably fixes whatever causes that.
Ahhh, memories. I actually missed the letter on my first playthrough (well, ignored it), and then spent ages trying to get the main quest to progress. So many ways to soft lock yourself :D. Note, this was when the MS-DOS version was the only one in existence xD. Took me till a couple of years ago with unity to actually play through it in any "decent" way.
Fun fact agility and luck are dump stats in fact a 100 in one of the stats grants an increase of a max of 1% of difference, str and, for weapons, the material they're made from are what actually matter in raising your melee attack roll hit chance and thusly speed because more attacks mean more chances to hit (if you're wondering if agility effects ranged combat bows function like how ranged magic works if missile hit guy deal damage)
(Also btw the mannimarco you meet in daggerfall is the mannimarco before he split into two beings the mortal mannimarco and the mannimarco who rose to divinity as the necromancers moon, from that time right after daggerfall where everything both happened and didn't happen because a dwarven made anime mecha awakened who had the power of a god in equivalent strength and that simple act split time into fragments that immediately fixed themselves to cause everything and nothing to happen on that day)

@@1thevm1 Just like in real life you have to go do medical school to get your certification
But what if I _want_ to die to of stomach rot?
Or cheesing the game with a classic exploit of infinite fireballs
I love it when the game doesn't communicate you got poisoned and you just die whenever time passes.
I play with critical weakness to paralysis, the free action spell is ceap and the advantages you can get outweigh the disadvantage
My favorite is making a pure melee, not allowed to use any magic, and then immune to everything lol. A big dumb idiot with a sword that's very tough 😅
"Ambient nudity" - now here's something I definitely didn't have on my bingo card. Damn it.
"Take the stairs. But if they're to heavy, just climb them." xD
"Take the door on your left. If it's to heavy, just open it and go through." - I love this "protest" against linguistic logic
28:20 small correction, his battle mage didnt betray him ( the emperor), the emperor betrayed his battlemage
Oops. That's the public story, right? That Zurin betrayed Septim and Wulfharth, and that's why they had to kill him?
@@agihammerthief8953yeah, honestly believing the superweapon of that magnitude would only be used as threat for peace was honestly naive of him, but in that interpretation what would become under king was definitely in the right
Plus, depending on which parts of The Real Barenziah are *actually* true, would be far from only time Tiber was a ahole about things
I love that chipmunk became a recurring hero through our elder scrolls adventures, fisting his way through prophecies and bandits alike. Go chipmunk go !
Go go chipmonk ranger!
Just like Abraham Lincoln in Nerbit's various runs...
I hope she gets better bro 🙏🏼 stay safe
@milesromanus7041 thanks brother. She's got her first appointment with the oncologist Tuesday hope it goes well. Happy holidays.
Its an awful thing, I lost my dad to it like 15 years ago. A little optimism, a lot of forms of cancer are perfectly treatable today, so hopefully things work out for you
I wish you and your mother the best, I’m sorry you two are going through this.
@@Shmandalf Hoping for the best wont know much til next week. Thanks for the kind words, It really helps. Sorry about your dad. Cancer sucks.
20:00 The letter was addressed to "The Queen of Daggerfall." Emperor didn't put the name on, just the title. When it arrived, Lysandus had been killed and the Queen was now Aubk-i, not Mynisera. Mini-Sarah. Meany Sarah.
The plot would've been _waaay_ simpler if ol' Uriel just wrote "Queen Mynisera". What a dummy!
@@rdrrr Not quite his finest hour, no.
I like the main quests on paper - the intermingling politics of the Bay is a really interesting concept - but as you said, the low points can get pretty rough.
With older games there are typically two schools of thought:
1) the game is perfect, anything afterwards is a cut down, casualised imitation.
"Take the stairs. But if they're too heavy, climb them." was so unexpected that I laughed out loud at the train station 😆
I'm proud of Chipmunk for managing to successfully cast DE-DIMENSION!
@@Pyroniusburn
Like I get it why some quests have time limits but why this one?!
It's pretty fun if you care about post game antics.
all i have to say about daggerfall is HALT. HALT HALT HALT HALT HALT HALT HALT
VENGEANCE!
Just reading this triggers shellshock :p
dang it, i can hear this message
You know about "Stop, you violated the law!"
But the Daggerfall guards HALTing the shop theme is on another level /watch?v=IpeettBUmF4
There is a funny bug in the DOS version - mages spam spells without delay (due to a fast processor), and every fight with mages (especially liches and vampires) turns into a one-shot fest.
Beautiful video, as always.
The zombie appearing outside of town with a letter from Mannimarco attached to it is genuinely one of my absolute favorite gaming moments
I kind of like how weird the final dungeon is. It fits the idea of a realm of gods that goes beyond the understanding of mortals.
But from a gameplay perspective it is agonizing. I can't imaging someone beating it without a guide.
This is why you can have multiple save slots!
@@mightystu49 The full 6 xD

>Critical Strike & Dodging are Random.
Yooooo Daggerfall! Ready for the Arena runs at this rate. B)
If OpenTESArena ever gets finished, you just might.
@@kanrakucheeseyep, Arena is surprisingly playable. I finished the game several times on doxbox, with the keymapper mod, and some visual ones. It also has a nice atmosphere, sometimes feels like a horror game
I have a full playthrough with just the regular steam version without any mods or config edits, running the game on its own on my channel using Windows 10. It is very playable!
@@milesromanus7041agree, since enemies spawn randomly and infinitely at set nodes as you explore, the jump scare opportunities are endless
30:50 This is truly a Potion Seller moment! Hope he wasn't a rascal, potion sellers can be a handful sometimes
I dived straight into the comment just to write about it
Glad there are some people of culture here 🍶
25:53 lol, there's something wonderfully dark about using a hostile zombie as your personal courier. Like he knows it probably won't kill you and he doesn't really care about collateral damage, so he just straps the letter to a piece of angry flesh and sends it in your direction. Probably ate a few villagers along the way, no big deal.
Whenever one of these videos drops, I can guarantee that I'm about to have the coziest evening. Thanks for the good vibes, man
The intro of the video is quite possibly the only Oblivion fanfiction to ever feature Raminus Polus
Not me having recently watched Jwlars retrospective for the 4th time as 2nd monitor fodder when JBN drops a banger worthy of my first monitor
Honestly love how you manage to intertwine storylines and tell them, mixed with comedy, long form content, great editing and what not. Absolutely deserving your meteoric rise in popularity!
Another stellar video JBN! "What I'm gonna did to him" had me rolling, love how you write these :) Keep up the great work but remember to be patient with yourself and drink lots of water!!
I put this on for background noise while grinding in the OSRS League. Fitting.
33:42 Man. Would you look at that. What a beautiful tower. Hopefully a bunch of elf nazis don't try to blow it up in the 4th era to unmake the world or something.
...having a brainfart: is that something that happens during the war with the Aldmeri Dominion before Skyrim begins?
@@MishraArtificer It's something they might try to do in TES VI.
It's believed by fans that the Thalmor want to unmake Mundus so that everyone will return to Aetherius to live like the good ol' days before Lorkhan made the world.
They did try to steal the Eye of Magnus, an artifact linked to the god Magnus who made the blueprints for Mundus, who is linked to at least one doomsday cult. The Mythic Dawn. That Thalmor guy in the College of Winterhold even said, "The power to unmake the world at my fingertips!"
And parts of Adluin's Wall do talk about "the towers" and how Alduin appears to start a new kalpa when they get destroyed. As they're planning to return to stasis and status quo in Aetherius... or something.
@@walnzell9328 Camelworks did a video several years ago, explaining the events depicted on that mural (and the prophecy that goes with it). I don't think Direnni Tower was one of the Towers mentioned, but I could be misremembering.
Oh, no, guess I'll have to go back and watch a Camelworks video again. What a shame...[/s]
@@MishraArtificer Direnni Tower wasn't on Alduin's Wall because it's not linked to the prophecy of Alduin.
Super hype to see the jagex sponsor!! And the irony of getting said sponsor a year after you stopped uploading runescape is not lost
Wow. that last bit was wild, I mean kudos to the developers for really wanting to go hogwild like that but I don't know how fun it would actually be to play through it myself :D
Same Ive seen gameplay footage of this game myself and it didnt impress me very much, but that last dungeon segment was crazy and I really wish later TES games would go out of their way to just go nuts on the final dungeons.
It's a ton of fun if you go in with the right mindset! It's not for everyone though
When I figured out the crossbow thing I felt absolutely brilliant. I can't remember anything else about that dungeon.
I know you were kidding, but I'd absolutely watch a "Quick Retrospective" done by you.
I could always use more 6 hour video essays to listen to while doing housework.
Been subbed for a couple months now, and I gotta say I love this content.
Great to listen to and watch while at work, or just doing chores around the house. Even better when its games I know about so I dont inherently have to watch.
The commentary is golden and I just appreciate the work that goes into these videos. Thanks for your entertainment and work JBN.
Seeing the Unity version of Daggerfall actually makes me wanna give it a try. I'm an old fart who really loves Morrowind, but even I couldn't stomach the original Daggerfall when I first tried it.
Oh hey, that werewolf dungeon was where I got turned into one myself, I had no idea why there were werewolves in the dungeon because I was not sent there to kill them, and I noticed the disease pop up every time I tried to rest to recover health… but now my stats are very high and I feel very powerful.
I heard that Battlespire music at 14:18! I'm excited to see "I beat Battlespire as a Monk"!
to be fair, the king of worms' reward of granting maximum reputation in every faction is actually incredible. it basically completes every questline for you and makes everyone like you
(also, fun fact: "the king of worms" and "mannimarco" are never explicitly stated to be the same person in the first two or three games)
From Arch-Glacor to arch mages I'm so glad to see you enjoying making videos and variety streaming fits so well! Been a while chum but it's always good to hear your voice in the background. 🙇
You've rapidly become one of my favorite youtubers, and introduced me to a whole genre of videos that I never realized I enjoyed so much. Your personality, scriptwriting, and especially your love for these games all stand out so much that I felt the need to comment on my appreciation for them! I don't know if you'll read this, but if you do, I hope you're proud of the smiles you create!
I was really hoping you'd say "I'll try to be very explicit with my descriptions. After I left the goddamn cave I fucking leveled up"
Cussing isnt funny
Just wanted to comment that I continue to love your videos and look forward to whatever you put out next, your style is the perfect mix of calm, insightful, and funny. Congrats on 100k!
You dont understand the sheer value your videos have in lulling me to sleep. In the most complimentary way possible it is the most relaxing thing I have ever found on youtube. Also very entertaining while awake ofcource
A week ago my girlfriend asked me if I could put on some background noise, so I put on one of your videos and now we fall asleep to one every night 😂
Also, the Jagex sponsorship was unexpected but awesome. I usually skip through those parts but now I wanna check it out
Thank you for taking me on a tour through Daggerfall, JBN. I was lucky enough to enjoy Morrowind as it was released as my first Elder Scroll and can replay it at the drop of a hat, but at this point I don't think I could manage Daggerfall without those thick rose-tinted glasses. I feel like this is just as fine a way to experience it.
Can you beat Morrowind as a Rogue Ordinator?
*Must use Ordinator NPC class.
*Can only wear Indoril and Her Hand's Armor, can only wield the Ebony Mace, Ebony Scimitar and Trueflame (since the Ebony Scimitar is an obvious imitation of Trueflame).
*Must join the Temple and rise to the rank of Archcanon.
*Must aggro as many Ordinators as possible by wearing their armor, but cannot fight back in self defence.
Love that the intro to all your videos lately involve some roundabout way to explain the situations you get into in a way that is lore based, honestly really adds to the charm I love it

“i’m gonna steal your uncles soul… er your grandpas soul…ah your royalty it’s probably both” LMAO
20:37 Ah, man! Not the IRL notification message with a reminder on my credit card loan payment overlapping Daggerfall notification, reminding JBN that his in-game loan is due 😭
Worst timing
10 immersion breaks out of 10
Apparently there's dialogue in Daggerfall that suggests if you fail to pay your loan back enforcers will be sent after you
This never happens

Thanks for the videos, they do help me falling asleep and I am very grateful, I never played or watched any elder scrolls game as well so its very interesting to me and I end up finishing the video the next day after I wake up
the edit of the daggerfall footage onto the CRT monitor is amazing, holy shit. actually looks like it's on the screen!

I was intrigued by Daggerfall and dipped my toes in before, but thanks for taking the jump in in our stead.
Great content, in particular the random question-driven tangents.. and yes, the dad-is-a-wordsmith level puns, too.
But after 44:57 I expected you to explain where you got the ladder from.
I can put into words how much joy your videos bring me. Thank you so much for them!
I've just had a craving the last few days for daggerfall content and now this? This made my week.

A Daggerfall video? So hype! I hope this does very well so you do some more. Hardly anyone does Daggerfall videos
I love the deep lore into the handmaidenification of Daggerfall. I think I just invented a new word.
I would love to have a retrospective of the game that you made. I love your content and honestly, you're my favorite TES content creator, keep it up, you are great
I would, for sure, watch a 5-6 hour JBN retrospective about a game I've never played
Lhotun's quest is always my favourite part of the story. It really underlines the Shakespearean inspiration of the game. Tragically stupid and cruel nobility.
I love this saga!!! Thanks for the awesome content, man.

Genuinely thank you for bringing up the special membership package! Definitely going to make use of that.
I absolutely needed to imagine trees twerking in Daggerfall now.
Thank you, JustBackgroundNoise.
I would unironically watch a 6-7 hour retrospective of this game
There's a very good nearly 4 hour retrospective on it
There is also a pacifist option for Lord Woodborne, you can find his diary and give it to Nulfaga or the Dowager Queen. They smear his reputation across illiac bay and he's ultimately tried and executed "off camera". This also puts Lysandus' soul to rest
A monk having mysticism makes a lot of sense. Like…that’s what monks ARE.
btw if I'm not mistaken, I believe Daggerfall doesn't care which quest dungeon you go to, despite specifically calling one out.
But if it was Daggerfall, the Unity port probably fixes whatever causes that.

love your vids bro, i just actually started daggerfall myself last month and went back and started oblivion and morrowind bc of your vids

I wonder if this means that Chipmunk is going to wake up in a cart on his way to his execution some day
Fun fact agility and luck are dump stats in fact a 100 in one of the stats grants an increase of a max of 1% of difference, str and, for weapons, the material they're made from are what actually matter in raising your melee attack roll hit chance and thusly speed because more attacks mean more chances to hit (if you're wondering if agility effects ranged combat bows function like how ranged magic works if missile hit guy deal damage)
(Also btw the mannimarco you meet in daggerfall is the mannimarco before he split into two beings the mortal mannimarco and the mannimarco who rose to divinity as the necromancers moon, from that time right after daggerfall where everything both happened and didn't happen because a dwarven made anime mecha awakened who had the power of a god in equivalent strength and that simple act split time into fragments that immediately fixed themselves to cause everything and nothing to happen on that day)
Hell yeah another banger.
