Lol Patagonia basically said, "idk why these nerds are wearing vests when they work indoors."
idk why they are basing the tech industry as a whole for wearing vests. I wear a t-shirt and shorts and many people i know who work in the tech industry dont wear vests. I guess its just an eastern thing maybe since i live in washington and dont see it?
why tho. it looks terrible. it looks just like what old boring people might wear. If your gonna choose something to show your status with.. why those vests??
Douglas Mayfield it’s just fintech I think. I’m in NYC and I’ve only seen them around the financial districts like grand central or wall st...where all the banks are...my friends who are in non-finance tech are all in t-shirts and jeans/shorts lolol
@Giovanni Love No that was just speculation for why, and those reasons are bs.
@@TheEvilBunniee I think its different in the west coast
Me: Phil uploaded. I wonder what the news today will be?
Phil: Bro vests.
You can tell even Phil knew how stupid this topic was.

Patagonia is legit. I believe that man was being disingenuous knowing most people wouldn't know all the good things Patagonia does.
They've used all organic cotton since 1994. (Far ahead of the times on that.) They encourage the repair of their clothes/equipment rather than buying new -- they have a bus that travels around the US repairing not only Patagonia products, but also any other brand. They also sell used products on a separate website. Their website tells the story of where each item is made. They fully admit the impact of the nylon, polyester, and DWR coatings some of their products use, but they work to reduce it and find alternatives. (They seem to recognize the problem and want to find a solution.) Just a few examples. The list goes on and on...
Definitely one of my favorite brands!
Interesting
Never expected so many people to see my comment. I feel obligated to add a footnote. Never had read reviews of Patagonia on Glassdoor, but I just did and I wish I hadn't.
I won't go back on what I said -- they do the things I mentioned and those things are good. Unfortunately, it looks like they have some disappointing management and salary issues I wouldn't have expected. Maybe they do talk out of both sides of their mouth. In the scheme of things, they're doing more good/being more innovative than most other companies, so they're still tops to me for now.
Well, yeah, the greedy competitor wants to make it seem like Patagonia is just doing a PR stunt... As a PR stunt. Seemed fairly transparent without knowing the first thing about Patagonia. I don't think declining massive brand deals is EVER a good move financially, so I called bullshit on that call out immediately.
But they went to Buzzfeed for a press release. Can’t take them seriously.
refreshingAnd This bus actually came to my university! People were lining up to get their items fixed and get a free sticker!
Patagonia is being genuine but they are also using it as an excuse to distance themselves from the Bro vest image.
nothing wrong with that :D
Well, since the Bro Vest image is what it is, the choice to detach or distance from that is legitimate and in line with their mission statement.
andrewndify I’m sure that’s why North Face is doing it as well. Wall St. finance & tech guys aren’t really the image those companies are going for.
@@racingrocko8158 exactly my thoughts.
Patagonia have built themselves a fantastic/caring organization so I don't blame them for wanting to stay in the safe zone regarding this matter.
As a tech worker I should have more of a vested interest in this story.
Okay, I'll see myself out.
Lol made me truly 😆
Zach Woods(guy in thumbnail) puts on one of the funniest and underrated performances in comedic TV shows as Jared from 'silicon Valley'.

Nope get back here and face the consequences.
I guess you're pretty invested
I just remember the GTA V mission as Michael where we had to buy an outfit like that to sneak into a tech firm
Haha, that was the first thing I thought about too!
Dude I replayed gtav the other day(yes I was bored) but yeah that is the outfit, except he was forced to wear shorts... But yeah kinda scary ^^
So this is going to sound contradictory, but I'm really glad that you covered this, and at the same time I'm kind of bewildered that it's a news story at all
It's a brave new world...
I agree, it took a turn from really? To, sweet a company that stands up for good morals
Oh Phil that Dad bod was MADE for the mid town uniform!
Anyone who knows anything about Patagonia knows this is a genuine move for them. They're known for being a major environmentalist company.
Exactly. This is very in line with their past practices.
@Optical Clarity "leading producer" Hah! Them having synthetic materials in their lineup does not make them a "leading producer". Would I prefer them not to have so many poly-blends? Yeah. But given what their products are made for (outdoorsy stuff, which you need extended durability for, which can really only be achieved with plastic materials), it can only be expected. If you want to talk about "leading producers" of microplastics, look to fast-fashion.
Patagonia has a big influence and impact in the Page and lake Powell region for cleaning and donating to the lakes park rangers for cleaning the local areas for the environment and Native American communities.
All I can think while watching this... ruclips.net/video/-gd01vfKfr0/видео.html
I feel 50% whiter after watching this video
It was clothing for a STEM field. You should feel white, India or Chinese.
😂 hahaha
well, how white were you before watching this video? lol
So does that mean you are over 100% white now? Overstuffed on the white filling? Or more like a split softserve cone?
I do not believe this is a PR move. Patagonia was founded and has been based on sustainability and conservation, something that entices more than just tech guys.
First, no Patagonia was not "founded and has been based on sustainability and conservation". It was started in 1973 and did not to much for the environment or charity until 1986. The company was owned and run by outdoors people who generally cared about the environment, but it was not how the company was founded.
Second, if they gave a shit about the environment more then their PR the answer is easy. Charge more to companies who aren't environmentally minded and give the extra profits to environmental causes. Not selling to tech companies only gets tech companies to buy the same type of stuff from a company that is likely less environmentally friendly and cause more harm to the environment then just selling to them to start and if companies are willing to pay more, which could be given to environmental causes, not doing this is all about not wanting your brand associated with those companies and they are putting there brands image miles in front of environmental causes.
@@Loathomar That would only work if the price increase was still under their competitor. If they can't they'll just go elsewhere. Result stays the same at the end of the day.
@@Loathomar If they charged these companies more they'd just go elsewhere, it'd really have a similar effect. Besides, I'm pretty sure there are price discrimination laws that stop them doing that anyway. Of course, any kind of public move like this is going to have a PR element to it, but considering the company has been fairly consistent with their branding and actually does do something for the environment outside of posturing (as some are claiming), I don't think it's fair to judge them that way in this case.
I'm just wondering who's wearing all the missing sleeves... that guy must be one snazzy dude.
patagonia’s second best selling product: sleeve 8 packs so that your pet octopus can stay warm
Patagonia is definitely being genuine. I've done a few research projects for my management degree on Patagonia. And they're roots pretty much stem all the way back to environmentalism. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have a repair program I place to reduce the waste of material?
"Correct me if I'm wrong..."
OK. their* 😜
(Sorry. I tried to resist. I did. I failed.)
@SweetTea Conspiracy You think it should be "there roots pretty much stem..."? Um, OK.
@SweetTea Conspiracy No worries. And thanks for the laugh! I'll probably think of this every time I see TLJ now. 😂
And a second hand Patagonia shop
And make some of their clothes out of recycled bottles.
Yes, they do. They're an outdoor company. Their products are made to be put through the trenches of the great outdoors. Not to be some status symbol for bros 🤦♂️
I love that the company actually backs up their environmental stance with action. That's what I got out of it.
Patagonia is not fucking around that's for sure!
Too bad organic farming uses up twice the amount of land and isn't environmentally friendly. I had a nice chuckle from their statement.
Pizzazz is best Oh, is that so?
I wish Patagonia spent the money they spend on charity on bettering their own processes though. Imagine how big of a change they could make if those 100 million dollars went on creating a much better product or offering those amazing jackets to those who can't afford it. I like how they act on their mission statement and don't shrink from it but I personally feel that money donation is a lost opportunity when a company is able to create efficiencies and do more on that same pile of cash.
@@shelbie2970 www.acsh.org/news/2017/05/26/organic-farms-use-more-land-and-dont-decrease-carbon-footprint-11338
Tech companies start donating to enviromental programs to get access to vests
I don’t see why this is a story. They can go to any embroidery shop who carries Patagonia and have the vests embroidered.
Honest if it takes vests to get big companies to give a shit about environmentalism, I’m all for it
@@TheGuardian_TM it's the buying in bulk that is the issue. Buying off the shelf might cost, as phil said up to 900 for each vest, but in bulk & embroidered it could be as low as 60 per vest. times the number of employees...so money is the issue.
tina quayle Buying custom embroidered Patagonia vests from an embroidery company, who gets wholesale pricing from Patagonia, is going to be basically the same price as ordering custom embroidered vests directly from Patagonia. They wouldn’t be walking into a department store, paying full retail price, then dropping them off to be embroidered.
@@TheGuardian_TM if theres a middle man theres a markup.
Patagonia was founded by one of the OG badass rock climbers. I'd honestly be more surprised if they weren't very environmentally conscientious.
"They're only doing pr!"
Okay but as a company, why would they turn away some of their biggest revenue sources just to say look we're green. That's a hit for the company.
Monkeysrock it’s almost like companies maximising stockholder profits is the reason the environment is as terrible as it is. It’s to be determined if it’s legitimate or not, but regardless the “Bottom Line” is what has got us to where we are.
amen!!

Your joke about how this wouldn't be new to you if you signed up for google alerts for patagonia news hit me so surprisingly hahaha
Patagonia has ALWAYS been about the environment. I totally understand them not wanting to align themselves with companies who's entire business model is entirely focuse on making money, at the expense of our planet. If these companies want to take 1% of their earnings and pleadge that money to the environment, then I could see Patagonia revisiting doing business with them. Overall, it seems about right.
Yes, because Google is out burn the planet to the ground, as well as your local CPA, among other organizations that make business of any sort, theirs included, possible. We tend to take it all for granted really.

I would love to see a deep dive into nuclear energy. I’ve been seeing it pop up in my fb news feed a bit lately and would like to see what you and your team can find on it.
What is there to know about it? Its the cleanest form of Energy ever made on our planet, but its also becoming outdated by now. Countries should all had gone the way of the french in the 50's and 60's. Dosen't make much sense to go for it now, but its still a great source of energy which basically makes France Co2 neutral, most of the poloution they get is from German coal plants.
@@Djuntas I wonder if we invested more into it we could make it more up to date?
@@Djuntas
Renewable energy isn't suitable for all environments and locations and even in the locations that are suitable there is variance in the output of these energy sources. For these reasons there will be a need for 'traditional' power plants for decades to come.
@@overshottyler It won't, cause better energy solutions already exsist. Patagonia is a pretty legit company. It is even registered as a "Private Benefit Corporation."
What this means is that the rule of "stockholders interests are primary" doesn't really exist. The Directors of a B Corporation are required to also take into account the interests of non-financial stakeholders.
This requirement gives them legal protections and some shielding from corporate takeovers that would, as an example, use a more expensive but environmentally or socially aware, process as evidence of a lack of fiduciary responsibility as evidence.
There are a bunch of headaches that go along with this B Corp designation. You have to have more transparency in terms of records. A C Corp really only has to answer to stock holders, a B Corp has to put everything on a public web site (with the exception of proprietary information.)
That's a lot of hoops to jump through,, and expense, just for marketing.
Sometimes you find out that a thing is a thing, and you stare in stock amazement at how that thing became a thing, and truly gawk at a whole group of people with more money than common sense...
I am truly glad I long ago reached a point where I don't give a damn what others think of my car, my spouse, my money and my style, and let my work speak for itself.
Yeah that works for most jobs but some fields are a different world completely. Business for one is all about making an impression, if they feel vests do that then I have no problem with it
Its sad to hear that guy thinks that its disingenuous to put the environment before profit..
Honestly it is wise to be cynical when it comes to corporations, eco-friendly Patagonias are few and far in between.
TheOzarkWizard exactly. Says more about him than it does about Patagonia.
Arguably with what we are learning about micro plastic in the oceans and municipal water the truly environmental decision would be to stop making fleece clothing that sheds micro plastics with every wash.
You don’t even have to follow Patagonia that long to know this move is genuine. If your in reading or follow the space with other brands near Patagonia others would do it too if they were that big.
"Oh no, they can't get their vests! This is the worst timeline!"
I almost slipped in the shower I was laughing too hard on that one.
“Tech and Finance” said quickly sounds an awful lot like “Tekken Finance”
I believe Patagonia and The North Face are partner companies, founded by the same two men, and/or under the same umbrella. Patagonia are also deeply involved in politics and conservation in the area from which they get their namesake, in far southern South America. I think The North Face is the company that launched the founders' efforts, and that is a reference to a rather famous sheer rock climb somewhere in, I want to say, Yosemite, or something. Definitely watch 180° South for more information. It's a great documentary of a videographer's journey and his intersection with the founders of The North Face and Patagonia. It'll make ya feel real good, too. Great soundtrack to match the visuals.
The North Face doesn't refer to a specific mountain, just the fact that the north face of a lot of mountains is colder and icier (the North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland being the most famous). The logo is supposed to be Half Dome in Yosemite I think.
I love it when libertarian hypocrites get pissed at private companies for denying them their services, based on a PRIVATE decision. Hells to the yeah, Patagonia!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it when you group like stories (Business, Tech, Entertainment, YT creators, politics) etc in their own separate videos. Finance bro here, been working in investment banking for about half a year. This move to cancel new contracts with other firms will only heighten the sense of prestige from these vests. Now only the old money names of Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan that already had a relationship with Patagonia will get that emblazoned recognition we all crave, and the upstart firms get shafted. If Patagonia actually want to distance themselves from finance bros they need to actually stop serving to ALL financial clients, instead of only refusing new contracts.
