    It was a very nice TEDx talk. I shall remember that that "boredom is okay!" and "The key secret to dialing in, is to space out"

    Let me summarise in my own words: From time to time we get distracted and can't focus on our task anymore. Instead of trying to focus even harder and failing that, we should better take a break from the task. This could look like sitting there and daydreaming, meditating, taking a walk, take a shower,... All these activities require a minimum of focus because they are automatised. So our brain gets a break and our thoughts can play. Here is where new ideas are born thanks our creativity being able to flourish.

    • @manavsareen5477
      @manavsareen5477 5 месяцев назад +59

      So basically break here means not to indulge in different stimulation like using phone.Her point is if you're not able to focus then don't try hard and let your mind wander and then get back to work again, right??

    Wow, I’m such a daydreamer and never thought it’s a good idea to let people know that I daydream and now to find out it actually helps my default mode, “my creativity!” Now to tap into it further with word associations to help me be mindlessness which further nurtures my default mode. That’s great! Thank you Dr Hamdani!!! 😊

    • @abhishekrathore6325
      @abhishekrathore6325 5 месяцев назад +3

      I also always thought "This is not right. I need to focus. This is bad. I can't go into my head all the time or else I won't achieve what I want to." I always cursed myself for daydreaming ( though I didn't called it "daydreaming" but "fantasizing". Idk if it's a word or not ), going where my random thoughts leads me. Fantasizing about a world and going into other world from that world and on and on... until I become aware that I'm distracted.
      But opening youtube and clicking on this video was also the result of those random thoughts. It's terrifying how little things can affects and plant ideas in our mind but on the other hand everything is the result of those small interactions with ourselves and the outer world.

      Ancient Taoism has been doing this in meditation for centuries. Sometimes meditation is allowing the mind to wonder and noticing the wondering and allowing it to pass. Sometimes meditation is focusing on a body part or the breath. There are many forms for many reasons and it’s good to do many different forms.

    For example, when we perform salah (commonly for Muslims), we are required to be solemn and focused. However, at the beginning, we often randomly think about things we’ve done or problems that are still unresolved. Then, at some moment, something we’ve forgotten suddenly comes to mind and might even solve the problem we are facing. This is fascinating. Thank you, Dr. Sasha, for the research you have conducted.

    Love your content, Dr. Sasha. You're lovely and have helped me a lot. I know how stressed out you were before this Talk, but you nailed it. Even with a blooper. You rolled with it and made it better. You were funny, engaging, but also thought-provoking. It's also nice to know that my brain working like this is natural. Explains a lot. Also explains some of the experiences I've had.
    I've been struggling for weeks on a project managing information, and last night half tired and in a voice call with a friend, kind of bored and fiddling around, the default mode network just kind of bonked me over the head with "Hey, stop trying to do everything at once. You've got this set, this set, and that set. Compress each set first, then compress and combine." After that it was damn simple.
    Since then I've gotten that done easily and am much happier with the project. Some of my best ideas come out of daydreaming. I'm a writer, and scenes and snippets will just pop into my head and kick off entire books or movie ideas in my head. And of course, I write them down.
    This is really helpful and validating. Thank you so much.

    This talk highlights how our constant pursuit of instant gratification and dopamine hits undermines our ability to focus by preventing us from experiencing boredom. Boredom allows the brain to reset and engage the default mode network, which is crucial for creativity and problem-solving. Embracing moments of mindlessness can recharge our focus, making us more productive and innovative. To enhance focus, we need to intentionally allow our minds to wander and escape the constant cycle of distractions.

    For those who want to exlore more about how mindlessness can help us focus better, I reccommend you to read the book Stolen Focus by the author Johann Hari. I watch the video and then I found some similarities linked to the book. Hope that we all have explored something amazing about BEING FOCUS, and thus be able to focus if needed!
