Hogwarts Legacy Review - The Final Verdict

  • When it comes to the combat, however, Hogwarts Legacy is an absolute win. The game’s quest design is fairly standard, and it often fails to go all-in with its choice and consequence mechanics, and yet, even so, it manages to retain your interest while you’re doing quests on a consistent basis- and the combat is vastly responsible for that.
It starts out fairly simple, giving you a basic attacking spell and the ability to block incoming attacks, but the deeper you get into the game, the progressively more complex and dynamic the combat system gets. You’re constantly picking up and learning new spells and abilities, and when the combat is in full flow and you’re having to juggle different spells, blocks, dodges, and potions together, things feel excellent.

This game is pretty interesting in that a lot of media outlets are giving it around an 8, but the community is absolutely LOVING it. The Steam reviews are insane (95% positive and many people calling it their favorite open world game), and RUclips comments echo the same. I decided to grab it tonight, just getting into it. I hope I enjoy it as much as everyone else!

    • @mandrews6282
      @mandrews6282 Год назад +9

It’s kind of a weird one. I could see 8 being accurate, if every other game didn’t get a 7, 8, or 9 usually. This game is definitely well above average so an 8 in the context of other reviews does feel low in comparison.

@@mandrews6282 Yeah, this one is really hard to gauge. It’s odd because every time I watch gameplay of it, nothing excites me at all. However, from what little I’ve played so far, it is already clicking with me more than expected. I was really surprised to see how well it’s received on Steam. I thought it would have a 7/10 user score.

Dunno, I put 6 hours and its probably the worst open world game I've ever played. I think the user reviews may be boosted by Harry Potter nostalgia... Which again, it isnt bad, but if you're not a Harry Potter fan, this game is pretty mediocre on its own.

You guys are usually spot on with reviews but with this one I have to disagree. I'm 40 hours in at the time of this review and the game is still throwing new mechanics and surprises at me. It's an absolute marvel when it comes to gameplay and presentation. There has been so many times that I've thought it feels like nothing I've ever played but at the same time familiar. Bottom line is that is better than I could have imagined and my expectations were very high.on a side note I'm not a huge harry Potter fan but appreciate and love the lore. This game nails every aspect.

That is just awesome to hear. I am extremely impressed at how many people feel as strongly about this game as you. Seeing all of the great comments on RUclips and the Steam reviews (95% positive, 10/10 score) are what made me decide to buy the game.

The review covers the mechanics and praises them for their depth and complexity as you progress. It also prasies gameplay and presentation. What the review didn't like was the story, character development and general thematics, which were described as "ordinary". It also critiqued some of the animation, including character faces, and some other jank. You've not countered that, you've only said that you appreciate and love the lore (but apparently are not a huge Harry Potter fan... sounds like you are). Sounds a lot like you've glossed over those flaws because your general love for the world, rather than being objectively satisfied with every part of the game.

I think a non objective, non biased opinion. If you are a fan of Harry Potter, you will love this game. As an pure open world rpg, there are games that are better. It’s not perfect but it’s very solid. Also, I believe there was a lot of sacrifices made, to make context within the lore. For example, having a morality system may not make sense because it wouldn’t be practical to be able to kill students and professors in Hogwarts. I’d love to see a sequel or dlc because I think the game has potential to be great. There are a few technical issues. The game looks amazing with fidelity mode but I can’t sacrifice the smoothness performance mode gives. But I’d love to eat guillyweed and swim under the black lake. Or compete in the tri wizard tournament or have online competitive play of quidditch or how about giving us the Patronus spell and being able to fight dementors, after using an unforgivable curse too many times. I even had a thought this game may work well as an MMO, where other students are real people. I love reading all the lore and finding the field guide pages but it’s a bit annoying to have to constantly mash the revilo spell. Love the game otherwise and would love even more to see it expanded. More dialog options and more consequences for your choices. More variety in enemy types would be appreciated as well. Id love love to be able to use polyjuice potion and have some infiltration type missions. Please don’t spoil anything, if I haven’t got to that point in the game in case it is there. The attention to detail in the environment is amazing, however I’d love to see NPCs more reactive to what you do. Even as simple as making a comment when casting a spell. Id love to see the moving portraits say something, whenever you blast the picture frame. I’m could be nitpicking but I think the game as potential to go from being very good to being great. But in the end, if you’re a fan of the universe, I don’t think it matters. You’ll enjoy it no matter what.

There is a TON of small details that make the world feel alive. There are a lot of small puzzles everywhere as well. The combat feel great as well.
The 2 issues I have is that if you change the pitch of the voice it starts to sound a little tinny and overprocessed and the PC optimization is not 100%. The HDR and ray tracing settings are glitched. I have an r5 3600 and rx 6600 with 32gb ram and it barely runs 1440p, which has not been an issue in ANY other game I have played. It can comfortably run 1080p with high setting, HDR (even though there are lighting/shading glitches) with no ray tracing.

yeah, the combat can be fun at hard difficulty, and the world looks colorful and interesting... but that's about it. This isn't an RPG. You are not role-playing anything. The main character and all of your interactions are pretty much set, and there's nothing you can do about it. The writing isn't insultingly stupid, it's just meh to the point where you don't care. The puzzles are repetitive, and the side quests are all fetch quests. I think 8 is very generous. I'd say it's more like 6,5. The modding community is very active, though, so let's hope they can bring this game to life.

  • @dims4627
    @dims4627 Год назад +1

I'm on board with 8\10. It's a good enough game that had a potential to be much better.
For me it has been a bit boring tbh. Hogwarts itself and attention to detail are great but the story and sidequests make me fall asleep. I'm ~15h in and I still haven't figured out why should I even do any sidequests. The rewards are literally useless and the quests are completely the same: several minutes of boring dialogue about how their brother\father\mother got in trouble and they need help, you go there, kill the baddies and get another boring transmog.
Combat is fun but I wouldn't call it deep and rewarding. You can literally win any fight by spamming basic attack and rolling. Smaller enemies are easily dispatched without combos and larger ones are immune to any control making them regular bullet sponges. It's still fun but with the amount of spells available it could be much deeper and less spammy.
Also absolute majority of mechanics are made purely for fan-service. Like growing plants, brewing potions, capturing animals. You don't ever really need those, they are just there with very surface level of complexity and you'll probably just ignore them after interacting with them once or twice.
Overall I think HP fans will absolutely love it just due to the amount of fan-service included, it's like a Harry Potter museum. I liked HP but not to that extent. Gameplay wise it feels like this game is one step from greatness in every aspect (except for the writing, it's boring as hell).

I love the game (level 19 as of writing this), but I think the criticisms here are fair regarding the world, characters, castle, story, etc, but I will say that it still exceeded my expectations. It is certainly not perfect. I still think 8 is too low. 9 would be more fair, and if they fixed the minor things mentioned in this video, it should be more of a 10. I think a larger NPC variety in the world and harder enemies in various spots of the world would be good as well. I agree that the world is not as detailed as the castle, but its not even remotely bad. Also better facial animations would be nice. There is certainly room for improvement, but what is here is still very good. If they left this game in development for another year or two, I think it would easily be able to achieve that perfect 10. I'm excited to see what will come in future updates/expansions. Wow so you want to tell me a character who is obviously most fleshed out and you interact a lot with is most interesting? Who could have expected that. Side quests are actually super weak and boring which are obviously marked with white color. Quests you are talking about are marked yellow which are part of main story. Other characters are not really interesting or unique. Poppy is kind and likes beasts. Except few small things like learning about her relationship with her family members you don't learn anything else.
For example just comparing Poppy and Sebastian wiki pages you can see that there is a lot more to read about him as he is most fleshed out character. The only thing you will grow to love is that dialogue skip button unless you love robotic dialogue.

Its hard to hit it on the nose for everyone, but it seems this is doing a serviceable job. And no videogame with the name was ever going to be better than Harry Potter... I think we got the game everyone wanted...
Hell, I've never played a Harry Potter game. Nevere had any desire to either. Why would I want to when my imagination was so much better? This is the only Wizarding world game that peeked my interest enough to even pick up a controller, and to be honest, im glad I did, im having a blast!

Love the game and played it for about 15h so far . But lets be serios the game would have had a lower score if it was not for the woke outrage .
The game is aesthetically beautiful but the dev's made a couple of very questionable game design choices .
Here are a couple of examples:
    - The popup screen that you abandon a quest in 15 seconds if you don't return to your companion is just stupid .
A game that you play for exploration cant make the NPC follow you but it ties you to a small range.
I was walking with an NPC several times and I would see some plants a little farther away and went to get them and boom the message to go back.
-The walking speed when you are with NPC
It changes from moment to moment either very slow until you move a little out of the range and then you move normal again but the NPC does not adapt its still slow and sometimes he just stops and waits for you to get back so its forcing you to just walk slow and not explore or do anything .
Come on the Witcher solved this issue 8 years ago adapt the walking speed to your character .
    -The revelio spell spam
The design of the spell makes you spam it every 10 seconds so you don't miss anything or to find the correct way .
After spamming and hearing the word revelio for over 1000 times I asked myself why does do game not make you just hold down the button so its activated .
That solves the spam issue and does not go in the Arkham issue that you end up having it activated all the time .
Even finding monuments and using revelio you see the scroll appear for a second but you need to go in front of it for it to take effect .
This needed a little more thought put into it.

    -Pointless collectibles
I understand the monuments that you discover those give you lore about the world and they serve a purpose to enrich the world .
The ones that don't work are the pointless dragon braziers or the leviosa statues .
This is just gathering the feathers from Assassins creed again.
And after you activate them they even disappear they don't even serve an aesthetic point to make the castle more colorfully after you activate them
    -Repeating dialogue .
I notice that if you stand near an NPC it repeats the same line over and over every 5 seconds , even your character does this just empty words that don't add anything.
The worse time for me was when you go in to a cave that a ghost sends you , every item you pick up he just repeats that the ghost was not verry thorough finding items .
I was expecting after being hit over the head with that line over 50 times that it was trap or something but nothing ever happens , it just a lazy repeating dialog .
    -Making potions its just waiting
So I have to wait 1 minute to make a potion with no input from me? why does this feel like a mobile game feature without the request for money
if you want to make multiple potions you just have to waste 10-15 minutes and wait doing nothing .
Like I said love the game but this is an 8 out of 10 for me , but this is a verry good blueprint for the next game .
If they fix some of the issues the next one should be really good .

I want original and charismatic cast of characters, including the main one, that are all designed to fulfill specific rôles in the narrative. Also, this customization system is clearly reducing the facial animations of all characters :/ I think all face model suffer from the limits of that system, making them very not impressive at times.

I have played thousands of games and many open world RPGs but I've never played a game that has me feeling so surprised through every second of gameplay weather it be the combat or flying through the world on broomstick, it all flows so naturally and organically. Im not even a harry Potter fan and after playing the game in still not a big fan of the universe yet it's mechanics and gameplay world and discovery is so well made and you can feel how hard and compassionate they were in they ambition for this game. It all just endears fun and consistently surprises me how much I'm enjoying it. I find it to be a masterpiece and this years elden ring (though not quite as great as elden ring)

Every RPG mechanic is pointless and adds nothing. Levels? You get a talent which could be gained from open world challenges or finding as part of loot. Enemies scale with your level anyway. Gear? Scales with your level too. Collecting gear has no excitement. Loot is crap. Crafting? Feels like a mobile game. Let me wait for x amount to get x item. Dialogue? Robotic and has no consequences. Nothing interesting to find in open world except few scrolls that give some text about area or object. Etc etc.
I don't know what kind of garbage RPG's you have been playing to call this a masterpiece. Comparing any solid RPG to Hogwarts Legacy is like comparing a exquisite dinner to a fart in the distance. The game is good but nothing insanely amazing. I wish there was more variety, like desert areas, mountain areas, etc etc. It's all just green hills (in different seasons). It gets boring. And the story is not engaging enough to keep you hooked. Overall, I know I'm going against the popular opinion but I'd give it like a 6.5. If you asked me in the first 10 hours I'd give it like a 9, but it got boring :/

From what I've seen, it seems like there is plenty of variety. I don't need like 50 different types of enemies. And I played the living heck out of the Batman: Arkham games and I love them. Not many different types of enemies. Just thugs (in different clothes, depending on what supervillain they are henchmen of, clowns would go under this too), assassins/ninjas, corrupt police officers, thugs that are considered "giants" (because of how tall and muscular they are), plants (Poison Ivy related), Clayface clones at the end of Arkham CIty, and the supervillains. Pretty sure Hogwarts Legacy has way more than that. So, more doesn't always mean better. Same with the size of the map/world. The Arkham games have smaller worlds/maps, but I'd rather have a smaller/detailed world/map than something massive like the GTA games. The GTA games have huge maps/worlds/cities/etc. but they just seem to be big for "just because" reasons. A lot of places are spread out or lots of buildings that have no purpose. So, more doesn't mean better. Quality over quantity as to what some would say.

This is one of the better games I’ve played in a long time. I really only have 2 things I don’t like
    1) there does not seem to be competitiveness between the houses, you will see griffindors standing around and hanging out with slytherins everywhere you go. I know that being in different houses does not make you enemies like Harry and Malfoy but still, there is like no hostility between other students at all, everyone acts super kind and polite at all times.
    2) somewhat adds on to point 1, there is barely any emphasis on the house cup, now and then a professor will mention awarding or taking away points but it would be cool if there was a way to actually lose the house cup and more in game activities involving being an actual hogwarts student.
