I dropped my RV. Tire change gone wrong…

- I knew better, but I did it anyways and it bit me in the ass! They say these motorhome jacks are for stabilizing only, and should never be used to lift the RV in the air. However, many times while camping we've had one end or the other completely off the ground and never an issue. I'm still not sure whether it was the rear jack sinking, or the front one retracting itself that caused the failure, but either way I got extremely lucky that the only damage was bent mounting brackets for the rear jacks.
Luckily I own my own tow trucks and head the @zackliftinternational4841 sitting there on the back of the @SeriousTrucks ready to go. So between that and my @harborfreight off road jack, I was able to get it picked up and safely set on some blocks

Crawling under a wonky supported RV is a comment generator and it worked BUT just because you "got by with it this time does not mean you will the next time." :-)
Yah, NO PROPER BLOCKING to be seen! Insane! Don't touch anything, TOO MUCH! Oh, a reminder, there are NO WHEELS on this unit!
Agreed tbh. And I'm a cowboy
Still haven't seen Casey react to this atrocity.
Crawling under a broken jack system was not the smartest thing I’ve seen. I would have put jack stand under it before leaving it with out tires.
I was thinking that too. But he'll get more replies and boost those Tube numbers. Also since he lived it's a win win.
Jack stands would've just sunk too I'd put dunnage
If you were in my shop, FIRED! I dislike funerals. Yes 45 year RVDealer
@@tomamos5771 RV dealer? Can you fix Casey's RV self-leveling jack problem?
@@tomamos5771🤡
When do we get the video of you squishing the garmin with the zaklift?
First pull it out with your Yankum rope😅
In the meantime...
Hydraulic Press Channel. 👍
He's already stated before, yes the camera is total crap but he keeps it because he does sooooo much with that little thing including his e-log
With video from different angles, on repeat.
Background music,
"UNDER PRESSURE"🎯⚡😁
Ask @RonPratt what he’s using. And then set the one you have on fire!
Nice local recovery, did you do it for free since it was for a mentality handicap customer? 😂
😅
Ok. THAT is funny!
A potential rebranding of the video... Helping out a handicapped RVer in woods.
No shame in mistakes, but don't get yourself killed by it or over it. I had my T.T. start taking off on me when I disconnect it the RV pad was set with slight grade. Rolling and bent landing jack. Thankfully stopped when landing pad became a scraper. Gosh, that was 12 years ago.
Brother, I enjoyed the video. BUT I cannot believe you crawled under that camper with it only supported by broken & bent leveling jacks. 😱🤦♂️🤦♂️
What were you thinking???
I saw this danger too and I shouted in front of my screen “Get out of there, get out of there, it could fall at any time”! then I realized that I was all alone in the house and you couldn't hear me...
That’s all I could think of too when he crawled under there KC got big balls
They make itty bitty rvs supported by collapsed jack stands. Most people call them mouse traps. The only thing Cassey was missing was a block of cheese😂
Obviously he is not thinking, this is how people get maimed and die from stupid accidents that could easily have been avoided.
Y'all people that comment on his videos sometimes are an absolute trip.
Casey: this leveling jack system has never worked right … but I’m gonna trust it and leave it to support the entire weight of the RV
And he also crawles underneath it!
Lesson learned...for all of us! Now, you need to make out a bill for this recovery, frame it and put it on your office wall as a reminder to not push your luck.... luck might get tired of saving your ass! Really good video, kiddo.
Not to this extent, but how many of us have done stuff on our vehicles thinking "This won't take long, all I have to do is...."
Good morning Casey the main thing I love about your channel is when you mess up you do a video about it. That is reality things don't go as planned and you have to fix it.
I am sure your lovely wife was probably more freaked out than you were about it
'You're never supposed to do this...' And how many of us have done it? I was UNDER my '70 Chevy when the jacks gave out. Never knew I could move that fast...🙄
Been there, with Land Rover ! Came out, changed underwear. The classic 'It was only going to be quick!'
my dad's best friend lifted my dad's 66 C10 stepside off of him when his jack collapsed, several years before i was born
A very wise person once said (at 26.40) "....just because you've gotten away with something lots of times, doesn't mean it won't turn around and bite you in the a...."
@@jperreault5062 Yep. My one and only time was 1 too many. That was literally 40 years ago and I haven't repeated it. Lesson learned.
The only thing that can make this video better is to have Grumpy hanging around laughing at you.
I had a hydraulic hose on my levelers blowout once. It fell faster than a rock off a cliff. Convinced me to never trust them again.
What not to do when you are changing tires on your RV.
At least nobody was hurt, the RV wasn't damaged too badly and you learned a lesson. The wrecker saved your bacon.
Nothing that some cribbing and the floor jack could not have done on their own.
In the future - Air Bag Jacks would be nice to have in an emergency recovery ... you might have to remove a vehicle after an accident with damage steer wheel
Casey, you've learned one lesson, and that is never to do that again. We all learn something new every day, no matter how old we get. Thank you for sharing! 😊❤
Casey I worked for Coachman servicing bigfoot systems for over 15years & yes you can leave the system fully extended for long periods of time ( like winter storage )as long as you coat the pistons with lubricant prior to lowering ( 556,WD40,) , what happened in your case & i have seen it many times is the front left gave way lost pressure over time causing the RV to tilt applying more side force to the left rear lean which in turn caused the base to dig in and eventually causing the supports to bend at their weak points ,your system when working properly should be able to support the RV for an indefinite amount of time while extended ,but please remember it is an open system meaning if you have a bad seal or blow a weak line due to dry rot the system will come down retract so while up for service use jack stands , and it always good to have your piston feet on 2x12x12 pressure treated pads to widen the foot print .
You were very lucky that you were able to get a heavy wrecker over there before anything worse happened. You owe yourself a big thanks for coming over so quick to bail…yourself…. out. I’m sure it wasn’t cheap, but hopefully you gave yourself a reasonable discount.
While I would never leave it sitting on the jacks, I’ve done my fair share of idiotic things over the years. So no judgement from me!😅
😊😊😊
Man the customer is giving you the business on this one!
The reason your 4x4 block split is you had the grain in the wood vertical . It is a lot stronger with the grain horizontal to the ground.
I watched you set blocks with grain aligned with rotor/ hub and almost commented that sometimes hub/rotor will split blocks, but I didn't .. then lock splits as you set down on blocks. 😋
I know you know better, and yet you did it again in final set.
Always set wooden blocks so edges are at 90 degrees to grain of wood!
It's like you said about using levelers as stands, you might get away with it but it might "bite you in the ass." 🙂
Doing this safely takes way less time, way less injury, way cheaper than even 1 failure in 100 tries.
I can envision Casey singing "I saw the light"
I'm very impressed with you Casey, for your unmitigated honesty in the accepting/owning of your actions.
That and the means to reconcile the same. Cheers, Mate.
OK ... I think you may be now be lifetime member with us. "Those who shouldn't have done that or put off a should do" and it bit us in the rear.
Crawling under the RV with half broken jacks and no wheels is insane
Alright Casey, after watching that goat rope, I thought I'd never watch another video ... THEN I realized you staged the whole thing to make us all feel better about OUR goat ropes! Love ya man!
Your patience is outstanding. Plus your positive attitude really makes me strive to be better myself.
Thank you
Bummer... I hate when I do stupid things knowing that it was probably gonna bite me in the butt. We all do it. Thanks for making me feel a bit more normal.
I got a badland jack because of your video a while back on it. I was working on a lifted F350 with fat duallies on it, and on red sand 'driveway'. That jack worked wonderfully, easily held it in the air for several days while I worked on the truck. So thank you for your coverage on the jack.
I might of left it until i got the wheels back, but I'm a real worrier.
Hey Casey, hindsight has always been the clearest for me. You never cease to amaze me. All of your knowledge in this industry always impresses! Thanks for all you do, seen and unseen Casey Ladelle. A good man to be following and playing his moves forward.
0:47 JFC did u really crawl under an RV while it was lifted only by some badly BENT jacks ?? what if they give up and bend all the way ?
Internal screaming of “nonononono, do NOT go under there”
i literary slid my chair back!!!
@@user-cl9zf9wj9iScreaming out loud to the screen. Expletive.
He does that quite often. Didn't you see the video where he was under a big truck after he sat it on some rocks?
Calculated risks. Sometimes you gotta do unsafe stuff to get a job done. We've all been there at some point in our life
Being you are you, you will never run out of recoveries 😂
personally i would not have messed with it before getting wheels. would have made it way easier to just need to work one side.
also that is some flimsy pistons on that levelling system. i would not trust it enough to crawl under it.
now is the time you needed some Flat Form Kevlar Cord Reinforced Lifting Bags . i loved using them when driving road assist.
1 inch thick when not expanded but they can lift up to 70 ton. great for large forklifts and low front axles and places hard to get in general.
It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who’s had problems with Forest River or a dealer who sales them. Sorry that happen.
Have a NoBo trailer and zero post sale help
It's most of them, it's all about the sale not support.
@@DB-yj3qc Yep, I have dealt with quite a few RV Dealers and had family deal with a bunch more and so far I have only found one that was solid both pre and post sale, unfortunately they went out of business quite a few years ago.
Often used maxim in the service; "It's not how bad you mess up, but how well you recover." You recovered just fine!
Casey you should have driven the r v to tire store let them change tires safely
The tires were dry rotted and unsafe to drive on. I’d rather this than a blow out and hitting someone else at highway speed.
That beautiful RV deserves real big Jack's with big pads.😅
Indeed. Over the years having worked at a tractor dealership, we used woo blocks as big as 16" x 24" to support machinery that required work beneath them. If there were hydraulic cylinder supporting any amount of weight, we surrounded the rods with steel angle iron to prevent the rods from retracting in any way. Then the wood blocks were put into place as the main supports. The huge blocks were always stable & gave extra room underneath to do our work.
@dougbourdo2589 The ministry made me get rid of all of my wood blocks a few years ago. "What is the weight rating on that block?" I dunno but they always worked far better than jack stands on heavy equipment that has no good place for them.
Thank you for time lapsing the shovel work. I can’t stand those things! It was freaking me out! You almost lost me!
😂🤣😂🤣
This would be a good chance for some enterprising company to send you a set of aftermarket leveling jacks for one of your famous reviews
… Should we say that louder? Lol.
If only you had a tow truck that could pick up three RV,s at the same time.Wood blocks are safe but bulky.😢 4:53
Glad you were able to get it a bit more stabilized with the blocks. Also very glad that the RV did not come down on you while you crawled under it before you got the blocks under it. Would suggest that you don't do that even with the wood blocks sense as you saw they can split and fail. True jack stands would be best. Stay safe and healthy.
You've got proof that both a bracket gave out AND a jack collapsed for some reason, and you're climbing round under that thing?!? Sometimes we gotta take risks, that was not one of those times.
How much more difficult would this task be to accomplish without The Zacklift?
Not really difficult, just jack a corner, block it, jack a corner block it etc etc.
I'd say more time consuming than more difficult. A bottle jack and some blocks would get the job done no problem.
Another great video. Look at it as a training video, should you ever get calls from RV owners for help.
You messed it up and that's a big fail. But you were also able to fix it afterwards and that's a big plus.
Well done.
I hope the trolls are not to hard on you as you say you never said you were good at this and it is refreshing for someone to take responsibility for their mistakes
It may be time for a new rear camera system on the ole Zack Lift. That ones gonna end up costing you more than a new camera setup would cost you. Fix the issue before it turns into an issue!
The reason I haven’t replaced it yet is because it’s not just a camera. That’s also my IFTA tracker and E-log
@CaseyLaDelle I see. Perhaps a second camera or something. I'd say that truck would leave a mark if it hit something. Love the Zacklift. Being able to use your Western Star in multiple ways is awesome. Keep up the good work, and keep keeping us entertained and informed
Ugh.
I can't stand bundled stuff for just these reasons.. one thing breaks and you have to replace the whole shebang.
I feel for ya.
I know you are frustrated, but have you tried moving the transmitter? It more than likely is being interfered with somehow, you can also buy an extension cable that can move the transmitter closer.
@@TomE74 yes, it’s as far forward as it can be
The best way to fix your RV jack system is get the skid steer, dig a big hole, push the RV in the hole, use the skid steer to cover it up. problem mucho solved 🤙
There is a trick to backing when you can't see the space behind you. Measure how far you can back up safely, then at the cab, mark the ground "that space", and when you reach the marked space, you are just right where you need to be.
OMG 😳 Casey! When you crawled under your rv with bent stabilizing jacks😵💫🙏🙏 Glad that everything worked out for you thanks to the ZackLift😎 Please don’t do that again, your family would be devastated 😢 Stay safe!❤️🙏🙏
Garman is much like IPM….they were both “the BEST” in office computers, GPS and camera applications. But now Apple and DELL have left IPM in the dust. Garman needs to get their crap together before they totally lose the market!
Casey, thanks for taking the time to video your mistakes and “learning curve.” You sure get yourself into some situations. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Troy create your Channel Sign. Hope you had a GREAT time at the rodeo!
I realize it might be a little embarrassing to post this but I really enjoy watching the process for solving a unique problem so thank you
…and then he crawled under the RV to look at why some of the jacks failed. WOW😮
We all get stupid once in a while but you are fortunate to have the tool (Zacklift) to handle the situation. Anyone else would have had to spend a fortune to call out someone else to help.
I have Lippert jacks under my Motorhome and they only worked on auto while under warranty. I replaced a valve that some internet searching said could go bad but I still level manually. I also have 5" blocks that go under each jack as they are happier if not fully extended. I have enough blocking to put under the frame if I have to change a flat tire.
As a suggestion...ARB make and market Hi-Lift Jack's ( Made in the USA) and also do Hi-Lift Jack pads. These would be ideal to put under the levelling RV Jack's to spread the standing load and prevent the RVs Jack's punching through on soft surfaces.
Sunsinker seems like a better name for her. I sure don't miss having e series vans in the fleet. Other than plugs, there was always something fun about sitting in the driver's seat working on the engine.
I used four chunks of pressure-treated 2x8 screwed together to create two 16" squares of wood which are 3" thick. (Made a set for a guy after repairing his 5th wheel landing gear leg which had gone deep; used his scraps to make a set for myself -- unfortunately, mine blew out the back of our pickup! :( ) Not only does this spread the weight of your hydraulic jacks over a larger area, it keeps the feet from freezing to the ground which can create another nightmare all it's own! Thanks for being honest enough to share your mistakes as well as your accomplishments. I always try to keep it real the same way -- sharing the good, the bad *and* the ugly. :)
I know damn well I’m not the only juvenile brained adult that giggled when Casey said he’s gonna “Jack it by hand” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great vids Casey! Keep up the good work my guy! ✊🏾
Thank you for showing me how to not lift up and set up RV but I'm happy your leveling system didn't mess up your frame
Those jacks are leveling jacks, lets say it together now leveling jacks, leveling not meant to hold up the wait of the RV in the first place they should never be used for what you did to begin with
You should get some pads for the leveling jacks.
Often there are "special" tires for new vehicles which are not the same as what you would buy later. I also heard that Sam's Club does the same in order to get the price down, which means it would also likely be Walmart as well.
Perhaps those tires were not really rated for the weight of that RV. Like that RV is barely inside that load limit with no room for error.
I use two 2x10 about 10" long, screwed together at right angles.
Lessons to be learned... Irrespective of what caused it, the jack system is being used beyond what it was designed for If it was an aftermarket one, perhaps with Chinese components, fitted to a set cost, it is always going to be marginal, esp. considering the universal bolt-on brackets used (which were the failure point). Even parked and being used to level the RV, it is just to allow blocks to be placed under wheels to level it out, not as a holding system. The jacks should have been installed further / wider apart to spread the load instead of concentrating the load in that narrow configuration, which when the slideout are extended, would be even worse. The trolley jack would be better off placed under the frame, instead of lifting the suspension... and climbing under that situation originally to inspect it without securing the load was not the best practice... stick the camera under there to look, not your head & body... if you have heavy duty truck stands, use them in situations like this, on hardwood base plates if needed, if you don't have such stands, get some...
I feel really bad for you Casey what a terrible thing to happen, as a MH owner myself I can say leveling Jack's use can create problems, had a few problems myself, I now carry blocks of wood to put under the pads to distribute the weight better.
God speed. Don't get crushed whatever you do
OH NO!.... Hope all is well!
Watching this made me think of what my father told me over fifty years ago when I screwed up big time. " We're not mad at you son , just very disappointed ." He knew I felt bad enough already on my own .
3rd! Mistakes were made! The challenge each time... how do we resolve & learn from our mistakes! Yea! 🍀🙀🌟🏆 😇
Funny with your rv sitting there with no tires reminds me of what you see in Caligornia along the freeway 😊
Hmmm lemme just crawl under this RV with broken jack stands and and no safety stand or anything....
Sounds like something I would do lol
You can buy jumbo adapter foot pads for those jacks to help alleviate the sinking issue (that's never been an issue).
This is one of the few times when you "haven't been good at this".
2:29 WHOA! Glad you were still talking... for a second there I thought you had kicked the bucket!!!
it took a 7.1 earthquake for my leveling Jack's to fail.
i was in it and it was a e-ticket ride.
i always use a pad under my leveling Jack's because while the ground may be solid during the summer, a good rain can cause the ground to become soft.
Yup! We had a million dollar Featherlite show trailer(78,000#s) with an automatic leveling system. Not a Featherlite issue. It was the levleing system. We went to full manual. Pull away the tractor. Level the front, then the rear. Then side to side. Worked perfect every time. We had an 8'x 32' slide out on one side and a 6' x 32'' slideout on the other side, so being level was critical not to bind the slideouts.
I like Garmin. I use my Garmin as a Garmin.
I don't use my phone for navigation because you will invariably get a phone call as you're trying to navigate a spaghetti junction of roads in downtown Washington DC.
If you need a backup camera and monitor, it might be best to get a backup camera and monitor that "has one job."
I'm beginning to think that we should all chip in on a replacement for his Garmin for his birthday. 😁
Listening to you problem solve on the fly ❤. Very entertaining 😊
I'm surprised you don't have a couple of airbag jacks in your kit. Super handy for getting under low awkward stuff.
Now we know what needs to be replaced .. that ***** Camera ... !!!
Nice of you to set up this scenario to teach folks about the dumbest things they could do, and shouldn't! 😂
So is this One of those, works every time but the last time 😊
Next time you have our permission to use leveling blocks.
Regarding your rearview camera; I had taken my car to an audio place to install a decent sound system. They ran the amplifier's power lead directly by my engine's distributor cap. The engine RPM caused a whining noise in the speakers until the amplifier's power lead was re-routed to isolate it from the high voltage of the spark plug wires.
What I'm saying is, maybe your rearview camera wire is run along an unshielded other wire and is experiencing unwanted interference.
It's wire less
@@jacksmith7726 But it has a power wire which, if interfered with, can provide dirty/noisy power.
I knew a mechanic that was killed by the jacks. Don't, just don't
Good that you have all the right equipment to recover from the mistake.
😳🤔 would love to know what Carina had to say in her comments, when she sent you the pic of the RV on it's side!! 😁 Shenanigans on the home front!! We often know what Should happen, but we need to be mindful of what Could happen. Not to say we should be paralysed by the What-If, but calculate the risks for a given action.
You shouldn’t be under there without proper jack stands. You know that.
I worked for a company where our entire operation was brought to its knees by an ethernet cable with a broken tab. Multiple times. Our IT guy knew about the issue and had to talk multiple people through how to wiggle it just right into position over the phone so we could do business again. Casey's backup camera reminds me of this. A multimillion dollar operation repeatedly hampered by the most easily and cheaply replaceable piece of equipment.
I have replaced hundreds and hundreds of tyres on these vehicles over the years, and believe me I could never trust any of them, especially trying to retrieve the spare wheel was a nightmare, I had to block up every vehicle because of the hidden weight from the owners equipment and extra equipment, safety was my first choice, I definitely emphasize with you Casey 😀 😉,
Jackstands you should have used Jackstands to remove your tires. Don't you think? Might have made your job just a little better?
I have a 1 ton truck and I too have dirt. I used 2 ton jack stands on both sides of my rear axle and the stands sunk into the dirt. 2nd attempt I used 3/4 inch plywood cut 12 inches square to put under the stands. It sunk again. 3rd time is a charm....4-18 inch long 4 x 6 blocks, 2 on each side. More surface area being 18 inches long and no more sinking. I now put a tarp down before working under the shade tree so if I drop any parts I can find them. Looking for rusty nuts n bolts are impossible to find w/o a magnet on soil that looks the same.
I think a 12" thick concrete pad to park your RV on would be a wise investment. Throw in some over sized jack stands for the future.
I bet Casey will not replace the Garmin reverse camera system before he hit something expensive 🤔
This reminds me of me doing things. I too have done things I know I shouldn'thave. Like in your case YOU knew the leveling jacks don't work correctly, yet you trysted them to jack up the RV and hold it there. My first thought was int he previous video where you stated you were taking the wheels off to get new tires, nade me think was it really too hard to drive it over and replace the tires? So since you did what you did you now have to spend mre time getting back off the ground, and, fixing your levelrs. Just like me this is one of those jjobs you do twice......the first time and the last time. But it does make a good video. I love watching your predicaments so I don't recreate them myself.
Those jacks are for leveling never for holding up the whole RV come on Casey LOL
I was cringing the whole time you were lifting on that hitch!!! The frame extension on those are generally built to hold nothing more than the rear of the body. Most of the hitches, on the older ones anyway, were only rated for 3oo lbs. tongue weight. Back when I was towing heavy vehicles I saw many RV's that had cracked and broken bodies when the frame weld let loose. I knw on my old Winnebago the full frame ends on the passenger side at the 2/4 width rear compartment and there is a patchwork of steel to hold the hitch. And the actual frame extension welds have little penetration plus they are straight across the frame with the extension being a C channel that is not the same width as the frame member. I am sure that as a tow truck driver you are aware of this and you really did not have many options beside bottle jacks and really scary body positions to use them.
The mistakes that cause the most pain are those that are best learned!
We have all heard about cars in the front yard on blocks but an RV in the yard on blocks is next level!
Whoopsie daisy! We have all done things we thought would be all right.... but isn't. The good thing is you have it taken care of and learned a lesson.
