  • Now that winter and road cinder season is winding down, it's finally time to replace the broken windshield in the Western Star. It was a Saturday and I didn't want to bother anyone for a ride, so I just hooked it up to the rollback and towed it up to Rim Rock Auto Glass in Redmond. They got me the windshields I needed overnight, and installed quicker than they said they could. I highly recommend them and if you need any auto glass in the Central Oregon area, check out rimrockautogla...

    What a waste of time. Have your wife pick you up at the glass shop in the family car.

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  10 месяцев назад +177

      You mean my wife who also has things to do on the weekend??
      Since I can hook and unhook the truck in less than half the time it takes to drive to glass shop, having someone drive there to give me a ride would actually create more man hours involved in getting this truck to and from the glass shop than towing it. So no, this is not a waste of time, and is actually the most time efficient option.

      I grew up playing and working in the great Oregon outdoors, getting dirty. Then I got an adult job, working in offices for 30 years. Then I retired and moved back home. One of the first things I did was help my BIL pick up some bags of potting soil from the local outdoor store. The bags were stored outdoors, and had gotten muddy. When I set the first one down in the pickup, I looked at my hands and said, "Ewww, mud!" That's when I realized I had been working indoors too long.

      I would have to agree with that. When I was in Australia I noticed that the most trucks had a Mad Max grill at the base of the windshield that extended up and out about 10-12" not to guard for rocks and stones, but to keep the uninvited kangaroo out of the cab, cause they jump and when they are in the air at a 110 KMPH approximately 70 MPH trust me you don't want them coming through the windscreen as they would say.

    Simpler solution to the strap winches.
    Weld a piece of tube with 4 holes on the spur / latch gear side. This way they work from both sides. Much easier than taking everything apart and flipping it around like I initially suggested.

    Most of my 19 years in towing was in a two car carrier. I suppose the main difference was that I was towing mostly cars and light to light medium duty trucks, like maybe as high as an F550 or similar sized trucks. Doing the kind that I was doing, I found out the importanmce of wearing gloves anytime I was operating the business end of the truck fairly early when I had to pay to have the seat, wheel, shifter and door panel of a customer's car cleaned because either my hands were dirty or I forgot to remove my gloves before getting in their car to do things like shift into nuetral or adjust the steering wheel while I was winching the car onto the deck. I ended up using those wide cuffed gloves that are on and off quickly and took just about no time to remove and put back on. For me, it wasn't solely about protecting my hands, but also keeping them clean at the same time, so that also spilled over to when I was getting back into my truck, because getting my steering wheel dirty was a good way to transfer it into a customer's car or truck. Lol...They also helped when it was cold outside because grabbing freezing cold steel with bare hands really, really sucks! But yeah, wearing gloves comes down to what type of towing you're doing and for whom.

    You could maybe get some DOM tube and cut a piece a couple inches long , drill 4 holes in it that the handle would fit in and weld it to the "gear" on your strap ratchet, then you could crank it from either side.

    Left-hand strap winches ARE available. Only problem is they’re weld-on. Unless you wanna re-fab something, seems you’re stuck with what you’ve got

    I carry a cut loadbar and a full size one. It's cut at the top of the lower knurling. It helps with step decks being low and would help you with the wheel grid.

    If the strap locks come off you could reverse them so it's easier to lock them

    Hey Casey, could you just weld some thick galv tube (with holes already drilled in it to accept the tightening bar) to the left hand side of the winch? Basically just weld it to the outside left of the gear on the left of the winch? Then the gear and winch wouldn't have to be moved at all, it would just allow you to ratchet it from the left hand side of the existing winch. I get that it would mean the ratchet bar would be pretty close to the gear and you wouldn't have much room for your fingers to move the locking lever, but still it might be better than what you have with the bar being on the right.

    Hey Casey if you can’t get a strap winder on the correct side you could weld the part that you put your bar into with the four holes in it onto the other side straight to the side of the lock gear 0:52

    Casey, one thing I do with the NRC wheel grids is put your clip pins in the opposite way. The bent end of the pin naturally flips down, and then your clip pin will have a default where it can't fall off.

    Hey Casey just a suggestion maybe you can find yourself an old hoyer lift that's going to be thrown out Bavarian expensive and use that to hoist those off or at least take the weight off while you're moving them

    Funniest part of these is that we always see the rigging/unrigging fully in the video, and we all just stay watching it every time😂😂😂😂. I even put it in .25 speed for the second time😂😂
