    I have been watching the car market for a few years now. Short of someone giving me a car I’m not buying for several years. My new moto is “drive it till the wheels fall off”. For the record I’m driving a 12 year old 3/4 ton and building/restoring a ‘78 Scout for my retirement putt-putt.

    I am having to look for a new vehicle now. Today I had appointments with two dealerships. The first one I had an appointment to view a specific stock number after they sent me an out the door price on it didn't even have that car on the lot. It had been driven 60 miles away to another dealership making it a used car. The second dealership which told me they "don't do add-ons" and sent me an OTD price had Nitrogen at $297 and Tint at $399 on the Monroney sticker. I had the pleasure of going off on the second salesman in person so that felt good.

    I have been trying to buy a 2022 Dodge charger since December. The dealer would not take my offer of 50,000. The dealer dropped the price in each of the following three months. I received a text from the dealer last week that said they were discounting the charger from the current price of 46,226 to 53,996. Not a miss print. The dealer raised the price. The original window sticker price in 2022 was 47,915. The car also has over 25,000 miles and they have had it on their lot for 178 days. I lost interest very quickly.

      My guess is it takes 1.5 to 2 weeks just to bring in the large crane ships, and barges needed to haul away metal and concrete debris. Another 1 to 2 weeks to clear it all up. A few more days to get the green lights from authorities that the channel is clear before shipping can resume. Probably wont have shipping resume before April 25th. As for the bridge, we are looking at 3 to 3.5 years. Maybe 2.5 if fast tracked and we don't have a lot of bad weather delaying completion.

      From the images I've seen there are some concrete structures that were designed to protect the bridge. Obviously, hindsight tells us that they weren't adequate.
      This bridge was built in the early 1970s, fifty years ago. Before the time of these gigantic container ships.
      The ship did drop an anchor once power was lost but not in time to stop the ship. Lose power and lose steering.

    Other ports that commonly handle cars and trucks are Jacksonville, FL, Mobile, AL, Houston TX and Freeport TX. Not that other ports, like Port of Virginia can't handle them, but the ports mentioned are already set up to handle rolling cargo.
    @Ray, the bridge was built strong. That ship displaces about 100,000 tons. When that much mass hits a bridge that isn't designed to handle such a side loading, there isn't any contest.

You would be amazed at how bad they are. In a car it is not that bad but an 80,000 lb truck nearly doubles its weight when it hits the gap between the road surface and the bridge not to mention that most of our bridges have reached or exceeded their lifespan.

The only thing moving is them rotating the cars because nobody is buying them. And, the prices on both the XT4 & XT5 (years 2019-current) have all dropped by at least $5,000. There's a lot of money at stake. Look for some large tugs to show up and drag debris to the side, creating a passage for cargo ships. My guess is that as soon as victims are recovered a passageway will be opened. It's just a matter of sending divers down to hook up cables and then towing.

    • @spliffbooth
      @spliffbooth Месяц назад +1

      @@bobwallace9753 I'm not sure you appreciate the sheer mega-tonnage of connected steel and concrete debris that's now stuck in mud under even more millions tons of water... a dense medium upon which tug boats have (literally) no traction. A tug hooking a line to that mess might as well be dragging anchor. Clearing a path will entail a lot of underwater cutting and dredging, if not outright explosive demolition. This will not take weeks, it will take months.

      As a long term blue water sailor I have a pretty good feel for dealing with mass in water.
      Look at the beam (width) of the transport ships. That will give you a feel for the size of the passageway that needs to be opened. Will it require some cutting of bridge steel into manageable sizes? Probably. How long does it take to cut through steel? Not long.
      Remember, as soon as the bridge went down experienced people most likely started planning on how to open up a passageway. Most likely the large tugs and service ships started getting ready to move to the area.
      There should be no need to remove concrete/stone. Just set the route around any piles of that sort of debris. There should be no need for dredging as no fill was dumped into the route.
      There's a lot of work that will have to be done to clear and rebuild the bridge. But not that much to open a pathway for a 160 foot (max) wide ship. Worst case, the span length for the Francis Scott Key bridge was 1,200 feet. There are sections between pilings that are blocked by fallen steel beams. Any concrete roadway is going to be on the bottom and can stay there, at least for now.
