    Thank you everyone for watching! Wanted to share that this RUclips demonetization / changes in the RUclips partner program will affect James and me - our channel Moore Approved is shy over 100 subscribers. ruclips.net/channel/UC1joV9AstaNMNeijehOWs8A
    If you enjoy certain small RUclips creators I'd encourage you to show them some love and watch, comment, subscribe, and share their videos! It's becoming harder to succeed on this platform - especially for new channels.

      I just watched you video giving tip on using the Serger. I know you said you start from scratch when threading your Serger, one tip when knotting the old and new thread is to move the tension dials to zero, this will not damage your machine.

    I've had one of these for about 12 years. Use it all the time during my sewing season. I do all my own maintenance on my machines and if properly kept it up I expect to be using this for another 12 years. It's still the best value and perfect addition to further your craft.

    I bought this serger yesterday and didn't even take it out of the box. I wanted one, but then I saw it and couldn't even. So complicated-looking! I've been watching videos all day about sergers (and this one in particular). Your video has by far been the most informative and encouraging. Ive always had trouble with the number 4 , the little lever. Getting it to stay threaded. It's a big deal when I do actually get it done right . I use a little blue dental floss plastic with a loop at one end to thread my needles and the lever. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. When I do need to use the serger for one particular project, that's when I need someone else to thread this darn thing. Throwing it out the window doesn't work for me, however ater trying multiple times, various days. I actually called a friend and sold it to her. With one try only she did it. Now with three sergers for various projects, they ALL STAY threaded with different threads. Good luck to everyone out there. This was (is) the best I've seen in threading the sergers. Great Job.

    I bought the craftsy class and I just opened my box today. That class was super helpful and so were your videos. One cool thing she does in that class is that she has you make samples and write down the settings/fabric type/thread used/which needles you used etc. I did two samples and I've threaded my machine 3 times now. I feel much more confident and it's only been ONE DAY! I am super excited to use this machine to make some clothes!

    Hello Jennifer, I have just come across #sewing report squad. I'm glad I am not the only one who insists on re-threading the machine by using the channels indicated, rather than tying knots to attach both ends. I had heard so much about how difficult it was to thread a serger. All of them sounded like they were major trouble, but I wanted one. Our son actually bought it for me... So I took the plunge and must have re-threaded it 2 dozen times, (immediately after getting it delivered) till I felt so comfortable with it - just like I am with my sewing machine. Thank you for that. Also, I did not know that the 3rd cone used up much more thread than the others. You see, I'm still learning. Now I will change over the cones when I start afresh. Thank you for showing us how simple and easy this machine is to work with. Also Thank You Brother 1034d!

    I enjoyed your video very much. I have come up with some hacks that I found useful.
    About cleaning the inside of the machine: I took an old blus brush, washed it thoroughly to get all the makeup out and let it dry. It dusts out all the fluff that gathers inside the serger beautifully.
    About having scissors handy. I got some removable kind, stick on hooks. I stuck one on the side of my serger and have a dedicated pair of scissors hanging there at all times.

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  7 лет назад +1

      +Danny Jane Great ideas!!! I think I have some cheap make-up brushes somewhere that can be repurposed!

    • @DannyJane.
      @DannyJane. 7 лет назад

      Just make sure to get it really clean. I sudsed it up twice (wash-rinse-repeat) with one of those special brush cleaning products that the makeup companies sell. Then made sure it was rinsed out well. After it was completely dry it almost seemed to magnetically attract the fluff to itself. I either fan it with my fingers or use a comb to clean it out. After a few months I'll probably give it another bath, but it won't need it as much as it did when I used it for makeup because there are no skin oils or other organic matter to contend with.

    • @DannyJane.
      @DannyJane. 7 лет назад

      Just make sure it's clean and that you get the fluff out regularly. The softer the bristle the better.

    Hi Jennifer. I watch your videos frecuently and enjoy all of them. You are a great teacher. You do a great job and shows lots of love and pasion for what you do. Thanks for your great tips. They really help me to understand my serger performance. Sometimes I have a little problem threading my needles because I cant see the eye of the needle very well. I use a spray a bit of hair spray on my fingers and make the thread stifer and in these way I can thread my needles easier. Do not use a lot of spray remember just a bit . Keep the good work. You are great. GBY

      Crystal Grace I worked in a sewing factory in my early 20s prior to college. We only sewed knit materials, so there was no need to adjust the machine for cotton or woven material. When I bought this machine I loved having it but I never touched the settings because I was afraid I’d mess it up and not have my engineers there to fix it. I’m glad there is RUclips now for nearly everything under the sun! I even put in my own hardwood flooring because of RUclips!

      Threading can definitely be a bit of a challenge and the serger is pretty finicky about HOW you thread it. Sometimes I think I've done everything right, and it looks like a mess. Do the same thing 5 minutes later, and it's fine. I'm like, "WHAAA???" I only use mine for sewing seams, because the thought of changing out the setup is not a fun idea to me.

    love the video. I have never used a serger, but I always worried the threading looked like pure torture. remind us all again, why do people use these? too funny. thanks
    Oh, and I finally bought a tiny powerful vac for my sewing machine. best purchase ever. they should just come with a tiny vacuum cleaner. The one I got was on Amazon and it was a Fuller vac and it works perfect. I'm not sure about using anything else on the inside of a sewing machine, including wipes. Maybe organic ones, most have too many chemicals in them

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  7 лет назад

      Lol!!!!! The threading really isn't too bad, it's not as difficult as it seems once you get the hang of it. Might have to look into getting one of those tiny vacuums - thanks for the recommendation!
      The dust wipes I use don't leave any residue on anything - they just REALLY help because dirt/dust clings to it easily.

    • @jmdenison
      @jmdenison 7 лет назад +1

      a lot of "dust wipes" tho are filled with chemicals and I try to stay organic. I like my little vac tho. you need to do more tutorials, you have a great personality for them. so why do people use sergers? what is wrong with making clothes with pinking shears and pressing all the seams flat? That's how I learned. They even have rotary pinking shears now, tho I have a whole collection of dozens of them. I think sergers work faster than a standard sewing machine, so what you would use them for? sheets or securing super fray fabrics like tapestries?

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  7 лет назад +1

      You certainly can use pinking shears, but I love the finish the serger gives to raw edges and it is super fast. I use my serger all the time, and it's particularly great for knits. If I just used a domestic sewing machine straight stitch on knits, the stitching is likely to rip when I stretch it. You could use a zigzag stitch instead, but I don't like the way it looks and the seam lays.

      That's what I thought--the serger just sews a whole lot faster. With respect to sewing knits, I did see a tutorial on youtube (of course) where you use wonder tape and then a double needle to make knits look great with a regular sewing machine. I never knew that.
      I might get a serger because I quilt and there actually is one method of quilting that you can do using a serger. I don't know if I can bring myself to drop the pinking shears and pressing open seams in lieu of of a sreger. My grandmother taught me proper clothes are made with pinking shears and pressing open seams for the best finish and sergers were just to make stuff quick. too funny

    Best video I've seen in regards to threading this machine. I just bought mine online today. Ive been apprehensive about threading it. I def prefer to become adept at threading my machine vs tying the thread. Also was worried about learning how to use a serger. Your practical approach and threading demonstration has put me at ease. Great video! New sub right here. :0)

      😀 Nice to meet you in RUclips Land! Actually I got in even cheaper on ebay. No shipping, no tax, $15 ebay coupon and a $10 ebay gift certicate that was given to me! :0) Comes with the full warranty too...yeah I kinda feel like I'm stealing it...😆 May take a little longer to ship than Amazon but a good trade off for such a low price.

      You're welcome! I've been inspired to start sewing again after a 20+ year hiatus largely due to the sewing community I've found on RUclips. And in my many years of sewing, I've learned a few things the hard way, too.

    I do not rethread my loopers when I change colors. I simply cut it at the top of the guide hole (leaving about 6 inches). I then put the new color on the spool, bring it through the top guide hole and tie them together. First, I put both threads together and tie in a knot then I split the thread ends and tie the single ends in to a knot. I have never had a problem.

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  5 лет назад

      That also works and I've done that, but for some reason I just find re-threading to be easier for me - but you should do what's most comfortable for you.

    I so very much advocate threading from "scratch!" It is not hard. So many serger stitch problems can be solved by simply re-threading the machine from beginning to finish. I have customers who return to my store just to have me re-thread their serger and I constantly amused.

      Honestly, I think my machine was haunted because your threading tips were the same as the other videos I'd seen, but my machine will sew for more than 4 inches now. I appreciate you staying calm and explaining the dials and showing fabric examples. I may have just given up for a few more months, but now I'm troubleshooting stitches for my specific fabric instead of just wishing stitches would form in the first place.

    Great tips, I love this machine. I'm guilty and haven't used many of the settings on it and need to. I actually need to practice a rolled stitch for a scarf. I want to get the little hand vaccum thing I've seen a lot of people use to suck the loose debris out instead of the blower, like you said that blower would damage the machine. Ohhhh, you don't tie off so you don't have to take off your cones? Only time I remove the thread all together is if for some reason i can't get one of the loopers threaded right. LOL, throw the serger out the window. Great video.

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  7 лет назад +1

      Haha - glad I'm not the only one who doesn't use all of the machine's functions!!! I've seen those little vacuums - they are SO CUTE! You need to get yourself some of those Clorox Triple-Action Dust Wipes. I realize that makes me sound insane, but they are honestly a game changer for cleaning! I was like, "Where have you been all my life???" Used them to clean my baseboards and for dusting and saved SOOOOOOOOOO much time.
