Great video! I bought a Brother 1034D at a garage sale a few months ago. The woman who owned it said she had only used it one time and decided it wasn't for her. It was in the original box with all the parts plus 4 spools of cone thread. I paid $40. Couldn't believe what a bargain I got!
You are hands down the absolute best sewing machine reviewer around. I like how you have an opinion so you’re speaking from the heart. Most importantly you demo the machine at work. Huge production value! Thank you for making the videos
Nice video. I’ve had the 1040D for about 20 years I remember paying $65 new. I use it all the time and I do like the smaller free arm as I make a lot of shirts. I have removed the plastic covers and oiled a couple spots and I’ve replaced the knives twice so it gets plenty of use. I’ve had it for so long that threading it has become as easy as threading a regular sewing machine. I’ve thought about replacing it but until it melts down I’ll keep it. I sew with vintage Singers and since the Brother Serger has served me so well if I were to get a modern machine I’d consider buying a Brother. Happy Sewing.
I don't have a server yet, but if I were to get one I would choose the 1034 D. It has more metal parts, and more accessibility to the thread ports, etc. and those two attributes 'strength and accessibility' are always the best way to go imo. And thank you Angelina. That was a big help to someone who is without a serger still, and may be shopping for one.🙌
For what it's worth. I have had my DX now for 3 years and I use it weekly for sewing knits and I have had zero issues with it. It does require a bit more testing and fiddling with settings than high end sergers but for the price and for me who, is just home sewing, its been perfect. I love experimenting and by experimenting so much with it, I now have it down to a science for the settings. It does really really nice rolled/narrow hems on lightweight fussy wovens and adorable tight lettuce hems on knits. Does great for costumes for kids and upcycling their clothes for some more wear. It's been gentle enough for lingerie and again, adjusting the settings each time yields the best results. If you are an experimental sewer, and you like seeing how and why things work the way they do, this is the perfect serger. If you want to set it and forget it, this is NOT the serger for you. 😂 IMHO. Edit to say that the left to right threading is absolutely a time saver if one snaps. 😊
Thank you so much for your review! I was comparing these two, and I ordered the 1034D from amazon, but then I saw the DX on the walmart website and I wondered if I should return the first one. Now I feel a lot better. This will be my first serger and I am EXCITED!!
I bought the 1034DX a few years ago thinking there was no difference, but boy I wish I would have seen this video before! That said, for the use I give it, I think its fine. Thanks for the video
I've got the dx and am very happy with it. Mine does not shake like that. If I were sewing professionally I'd probably have bought a more expensive machine. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for this comparison review! 👍🏽❤️💯 I think the Brother1034D serger is better than the 1034DX. I've seen 1034D on sale at Walmart for $199.99 - 216.99 and the customer reviews were 4.5 to 5 stars. I'm saving my coins to purchase the Brother 1034D.
Wow! I'm so glad I saw your review because I always thought that the 1034DX was the upgrade and was going to buy it. I bought my 1034D after watching your review 3 years ago and am very happy with it. Now, no need to get to DX. Thank you!!
I am so glad I found this video…I have been trying to decide between these 2 machines and your review was so helpful!! Thank you for taking time to make such a detailed review!!
Good morning Angelina! I'm so glad I saw this comparison video today. I just purchased the 1034D (brand new) a couple of weeks ago at a flea market $50 😊
After watching several videos you have done. I had a gift card to spend and just ordered the 1034D. Can't wait to get it. I have an old fossil, it is a 30 year old Simplicity. It was gifted to me. It still works and I use it, but it is time to upgrade. Thanks for your suggestions and comparisons.
Thanks for the comparison between the 1034D and the 1034DX. The 1034D appears to be the much better serger and that is the one I already own! Great to know I the difference. Thanks again for this video and all your other very informative videos.
I was looking at this serger but then saw the 1034DX, then google recommended your video to me. I watched all the way through and thank you for all of the wonderful information. You sold me on a 1034D. Totally going to check out your threading video when I get in the mail.
Your video helped me to pull the trigger and purchase the 1034D. I don't need bells and whistles. All I want is a heavy-duty inexpensive machine. I have a 32-year-old serger and felt it was time for a replacement. Good video. Thank you.
I'm happy with my 1034D. I bought it for $25 at Goodwill. It did not have the instruction manual or extra parts with it, but I could replace what I needed. I love my Brother machines, but it looks like the 1034DX is a bit jumpy and that would really bother me. Thank you for making this comparison video 😊
@@BlueprintDIY you would be surprised at some of the machines you can find! I think all of them have worked, with the exception of the little Janome Platinum Gem I found. I need to see what's going on with that one...lol. I do find lot's of Brother machines, which are my favorite😉
Thanks for the comparison video! I own the 1034DX. There should be a way to keep the timing of the machine working on your own. Sending it to authorized repair takes 3-4 weeks turnaround!!! I wasn't able to find the 1034D model when I was shopping for a serger. I'm determined to keep using this 1034DX model.
Thank you for your video/s I am a new subber. I am a male who is doing research on a Serger for my wife for Christmas 2023. I viewed your first video with the Brother, Singer and Juki. I have heard of these brands but Juki was the one I thought I would buy, but I didn't. I chose the Brother 1034D because of your well-informed videos. 11-24-2023 My shopping is finished. Thank you for your videos helping this clueless man. I knew nothing about Serger's but as of today, I know a little more. I know wifey will be happy. She is a really good seamstress (hobby). I think it's amazing what you ladies and gents do in sewing. It's a dying art and a true talent for those who know how. Your videos are informative, fun and you have good editing skillz. I will be showing Wifey your channel as soon she opens her gift/s. As for me, I don't know how to sew except by hand using a needle and thread. I think it may be fun to learn someday. I'm into using leather and making jewelry. Angel from The Bay Area/Silicon Valley CA USA
Very informative video! I’m so glad I bought my serger 25 years ago when they still had more metal parts. She still sews great. You’re lucky if you get 5 years out of a modern machine. I bought an all metal 1960 Singer Rocketeer when my computerized machine died. It does all I need to do.
The inside of my hand wheel shattered with stress fractures with week. NO ONE I called can get a replacement part for the 28 yr machine. I really wish I could. It was a workhorse.
I love that you showed us the comparison. I have this cheap singer stylist serger and I only use it for one layer heavy fabrics and knit fabrics. I will upgrade soon.😁
I only have the 1034DX and I find that the tail is always loose but I also don't have another serger to compare it with. I got mine for 249 and for as a newer sewist it does what I need it to do.
Thank you for this video. I’ve been researching sergers for over 6 months now. Mine is in need of replacing. My sister has the Brother 1034D and really likes it. I’m looking at it also and your video really helps narrow the field. Definitely not looking at the DX!
I have the brother 1034 DX machine and I really do not like it. I have had to get it repaired at least three times. I am glad you did the comparison video between the two. I was cringing the entire time especially when you were doing the layers on the DX because I know it is a very jumpy machine and can't take much. I do own an industrial serger so I should not need to purchase another serger, but if I do have to, it would definitely go for the 1034 D. Thanks for the video :)
I've had a Brother 3034D for 9yrs and I swear it looks and is threaded just like the 10304DX, I've encountered all the same issues and more but I've just learnt to work with it.
I loved this! I’ve been able to do small wristbands that don’t fit around my 1034d free arm section by not putting it around it. I physically have to sew around while holding the other fabric away from the foot so it doesn’t get caught. It’s quite challenging especially when you’re making newborn Jammie’s. Everything is so small! But it can be done. What I find at that point is that the presser foot is too long (that’s how small those cuffs are!)
Thank you for showing this. I really appreciate compassion videos that show the truth about how things work. This allows me to choose what is better for my situation and budget. We don’t all need the more expensive items, but sometimes it’s more expensive for a reason.
A little while ago I was choosing between these two machines and I didn't have your review to go by. Other than price difference I noticed that one machine was heavier and immediately I thought yeah that's what they did they replaced some metal parts with plastic and may went thinner or cheaper on some of the plastic. So many companies are always looking for ways to cut costs. In today's world I expect a machine that is of same or greater quality to cost more and if it doesn't I worry that the product line isn't going the direction I want. So I bought the 1034D, but was very interested in your side by side comparison.
Thanks for sharing this video. I just purchased the DX version yesterday and may return it without even giving it a try. It appears to jump too much, and I did not like the look of the loose finished product.
I love to hear you teach and share information ❤ Speaking of threading, have you used the Brother Airflow 3000 Serger? I think it’s the easiest serger to thread but it’s 4-5 times price of 1034d.
Thank you so much for this thorough video as I am currently sitting here trying to decide which one to purchase today! Thank you! I love all your videos!! Xoxox
OMG! Love your videos! Just bought the 1034d because of your videos! Sooo excited to get my hands on that baby! Thanks so much for your work! And congratulations ❤
This is an excellent video. I found you looking for reviews of Brother 1034D which you've convinced me to buy!! I am on a tight budget. The fact that you've used yours for 8 years and it's held up so well is what I needed to hear. Thanks for your great videos. I subscribed!
I have the 1634d. I have no idea how old it is. I bought it off Facebook market place. I think it was not used very much, but it sews like a champ and weighs a ton. I do wish it had the blind stitch foot. I came with the ruffler and standard feet. On the Dx model you worked with seemed to jump around a bit compared to the d.
so glad I researched the 1034DX before I bought from FB market for $80. It seems like a decent serger but does not operate as smoothly as the original 1034D.
Another great video. It’s really sad how much plastic has come into play in machines making them less realizable and more prone to breaking down. Metal is still best even if it costs more it’ll save on frustrations and down time. Thank you for sharing 👍
I would pay the extra money. The metal pressure foot adjustment part alone would influence me on that. The jumping and less capability of layers would also be a big factor. Great video!
Thank you so much for this video! Im in the market for my first serger and all the tiby nuances can be overwhelming (im still fairly new to sewing even) and this was so helpful!
Good morning Angelina, I need to dust off my Pfaff Hobby lock 794 and see if it will still work; if it doesn’t work I would definitely buy the Brother 1043D. Thank you for sharing!!! ❤❤Judy❤❤
I have the DX, but it is the only one I have ever used. I have found that you have to play with the tension somewhat to get the best results, but I would assume that goes for any serger. You having 10 years experience on the D means you probably know it inside and out. My thought is that there really isn't an across the board settings standard and each model of machine is going to be a little different. I can say the DX is a beast to thread, but once you have done it a couple of times it isn't that hard...and the 4,3,2,1 is a lot easier to remember. I also do not find that my DX is "jumpy". It stays put for me
At last - someone with something good to say about the dx. It’s what I can afford so I’m hoping to have good results with it. I’m a home sewist - self taught from you tube during the pandemic- I’m not sewing for a fancy boutique but I’d like my serged edges to look nice 👍🏽
Good morning Guess who I saw today Mrs Blueprint diy herself We took pictures and we talked about sergers. Happy to see her I tell all my customers about her channel. It was such a blast to met her so so happy 😁 Thanks Shelia Booker
Thank you for the Video. I have to say, that the ceaper one has an real problem inside with the engine. It might be dirty adn some of the motorelements are loose....Timing belt should be replaced
The D seems better to me for multiple layers and not jumping around. I had an old Babylock serger, and the thread was always breaking. I never knew about the 3, 4, 2, 1 threading process. I wonder if that was the problem? I had it serviced, and the technician marked each tension dial so that my stitches would be just right. It did help stitches not be too loose or too tight, but it didn't solve the thread breaking all of the time.
I purchased the 1034dx. I also have the new Bernina890 and the older Baby Lock Ovation. I got the 1034 dx just to keep white thread on it. It’s okay, but I’ve noticed that after about 4 uses I have to rethread it as the threads get too loose.
@@BlueprintDIY It is the best serger out there. Truly a smooth operator. But if you have a separate cover stitch machine, then I think the L850 is a wonderful overlocker
Have you tried the heavy duty brother serger? Is there any major differences than the name color and the larger removable work table? Can you do a video on that one? Looking into a serger. I now have a heavy duty singer sewing machine.
Thank you for the great video. I also watched the Brother, Singer, Juke comparison video. I've been looking at different sergers but I'm not sure that I'm at the level of needing one yet. At what level/amount of sewing do you feel is the appropriate point to seriously consider one of these machines over using the overlock stitch/foot for your regular machine?
I bought a Brother 1034D and used it about four times. It came pre threaded and I knew as soon as the thread ran out I would never in a million years figure out how to put my own thread in. Plus, it cut the fabric as I was sewing and I didn't know if it was supposed to do that. I was freaking out. Plus, the needles, how to change those? Ugh! I stuck it back in the box and it's hiding in the back of my closet where it can do no harm. I was so disappointed because I really wanted to learn to serge and upcycle clothes but it was just too overwhelming.
After watching this video I am sad that I bought a new DX thinking it was better. Yikes. I love my 1034 D but its just not working well anymore. Have you seen the new self threading brother?
I have the 1034D but need to learn how to use it after owning it several years. Thank you for your videos, I am ready to watch them all, especially one regarding changing the knife. Do you do zoom private lessons?
I have the 1034D. You should also do a video on changing needles and the blades (which is easier, are the blades sharper on the X or the same as the regular, etc)
Great video! I bought a Brother 1034D at a garage sale a few months ago. The woman who owned it said she had only used it one time and decided it wasn't for her. It was in the original box with all the parts plus 4 spools of cone thread. I paid $40. Couldn't believe what a bargain I got!
Woah, that was a great deal! 🤯
Score!
🎉 you were very fortunate! Welcome to the Brother Club!
Congratulations!!
wow great deal. I found a brand /new one for $100 on FB marketplace

Good morning Angelina, I need to dust off my Pfaff Hobby lock 794 and see if it will still work; if it doesn’t work I would definitely buy the Brother 1043D. Thank you for sharing!!! ❤❤Judy❤❤
Hi Judy! Where did you buy your Pfaff? Are they sold in the states?
Angelina, I bought it when I lived in Japan 30 years ago.
Thanks for a great side by side comparison. Both machines were in my Amazon cart. Looks like I'm going with the 1034D!
Glad I could help!
That was relaxing lol just hearing the sewing machines sew.
Great review. I have the 1034D that was bought in 2012.
Good morning Guess who I saw today Mrs Blueprint diy herself We took pictures and we talked about sergers. Happy to see her I tell all my customers about her channel. It was such a blast to met her so so happy 😁 Thanks Shelia Booker
Yayyy!! I’m so glad I ran into you today. I guess I’ll have to review this new serger as well. Thanks for your help!
Thank you
Thank you for this, vidéo I just bought the 1034dx. It was greatly helpful.
Thank you I just bought one going to try it our this will be my 4th serger
Ms. Angelina! 😸Thank you! Lovely lady for everything you do. You gave us vital information. I always appreciate your time and videos. 🙏🌹👍
Thanks so much! 🙏🏾
I would take the upgrade. I believe the 1034D is a better machine for a little extra cash.
thanks! you literally saved me one step from buying the dx!
Thank you for the Video. I have to say, that the ceaper one has an real problem inside with the engine. It might be dirty adn some of the motorelements are loose....Timing belt should be replaced
Thanks for the comparison. I'm going to continue saving up for the 34D.
Thank you for making this video! It helped me make my decision on which one to purchase. It will be my first Serger!😅
Congratulations!!
I recently learned that a BabyLock requires a HAX1SP needle and if you don’t have that needle the thread will break often ☹️
I purchased the 1034dx. I also have the new Bernina890 and the older Baby Lock Ovation. I got the 1034 dx just to keep white thread on it. It’s okay, but I’ve noticed that after about 4 uses I have to rethread it as the threads get too loose.
I was just looking at the 890 last night, drooling over it really. 🤭 One day
@@BlueprintDIY It is the best serger out there.
Lovely video. What tension are they on? The video doesnt show their tensions
I watched your video when I purchased my 1034D and yes it was the easiest best one I found. What is the basic setting you use?
All my tensions are on 4 with the stitch width on 7, stitch length on 3, and differential feed on 1.75.
@@BlueprintDIY thank you
great video. I loved and still love your original vid on the 1034d. Or I would be unable to use mine. You are a God send. Thank you
Thank you for the great video.
I think if you’re making garments for other people where you’d want the inside to look more polished or when you just want that for yourself
I followed the threading tutorial you made for the D for my DX and BOY! OH BOY!! I was like 😅
I bought a Brother 1034D and used it about four times. I was so disappointed because I really wanted to learn to serge and upcycle clothes but it was just too overwhelming.
hi, where is your video about the threading of the 1034DX ? dx thanks
I was looking for a serger so I make colthes will last so I’m going have decided which one would be better
Tape is my best friend with lay in threading ❤
Glad I found you! Learning a lot!
After watching this video I am sad that I bought a new DX thinking it was better. Yikes. I love my 1034 D but its just not working well anymore. Have you seen the new self threading brother?
Did you ever evaluate the Juki MO-80CB Free Arm Serger overlock machine?
Thanks for the review, as I’ll now be buying the D. Have you used the piping foot that can be purchased for this machine?
No, sorry I haven’t
I'm glad I found you! I've always wanted a serger... going to get the 1034D on Amazon! Thank you and I did hit the subscribe button. :)
Can the 2043D see ok through fleece for edging my projects? Thanks in advance x x
Thank yiu for the review, 1034D is definitely the eishhh
Have you changed the blades on the DX and if so where did you find them
I have the 1034D but need to learn how to use it after owning it several years. Thank you for your videos, I am ready to watch them all, especially one regarding changing the knife. Do you do zoom private lessons?
Yes, I have private lessons with the highest level membership here on RUclips.
Can you do overstitch on brother 1034dx?
I got the DX cuz it’s often on sale and i got it for 160 which is way different. I prefer the D by the look of it though
Great comparison video. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome! 😊
I'm planning on getting a 1034D want to know if I can Serge leather on it or have you ever did it?
The DX shook and sounded like it was breaking. Definitely would go with the D.
Brother site says 1034D is being discontinued 😢 would love to see any other recommendations for an intermediate sewist and a newbie to serger.
I have the 1034D. You should also do a video on changing needles and the blades (which is easier, are the blades sharper on the X or the same as the regular, etc)
Oh yeah, that would be good. The blades are the same.
Great video! I think I’ll go with the D!
I live your top :) It iis so hard to find either a square or trapezod neckline in an adult clothing line any more.
I love your shirt! It is a no sew scissors only creation?
